Dreaded freeze with grey "restart" box

Hi all,
It's been a while since I last had an issue. Hopefully I can resolve this with your help.
I've got this iBook G4 (1.33 GHz PPC; 1 GB RAM; HD not full) that's been solid and steady for a couple years, and recently these last 2 days, I've gotten the dreaded freeze acompanied by the grey screen and box in several languages telling me to restart the computer several times. There's no pattern to when it might freeze, but it's happened about 7 times yesterday and a handful today. But never before that.
I've done some searching thru the discussions, and found some related issues, but I'm not totally sure they are the same as mine.
Either it's a hardware issue (i.e., new loose chips) or I'm having some kernel panic issues. I don't have the original install disks here at the moment, or I'd run the hardware check. I will do that tonight or tomorrow.
I've found these:
shimming: http://www.coreyarnold.org/ibook/
kenel panic: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
Does anyone else have suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
kzrt
Oh - here is my panic log, in case it makes sense to someone out there and can help:

I was reading in bed tonight I had the laptop on my, well, lap, and it wasn't tilted any more than usual. I got a grey screen with all the languages saying SHUT DOWN NOW. I did so. But on bootup, I get this:
Big huge fan noise
Black screen
Dies
Sometimes it actually gives me the initial startup screen with the dial, but then the display gets lines all through it. Then it goes black. I got it once to the point where it was starting to show desktop, but it frizzled to black again. It hasn't given me desktop since, and it doesn't matter if the Airport's plugged in or not. Now it's giving me a backlit screen, but nothing on it; it's very pretty but certainly isn't what I want.
For the last few months, I've been having issues where the display would just suddenly DIE. It'd go black, and if I closed the laptop and let it go to sleep and reopened it, it'd come back just fine. Is that related to the current issue?
In short, would this shim thing be what's wrong? If so, and since it does seem to be a widespread issue, does Apple know about it? (And if it's not something they're taking responsibility for, what kind of prices am I looking at to fix it? My AppleCare lapsed a few months back.)
Please help! This thing's my baby. The only consolation I have now is that it's probably not my hard drive, so at least I haven't lost my latest work.

I too have had this problem. It is not a Kernel panic, as far as I can tell. I have two Apple Cinema Displays connected. Both are dark, yet this time my mouse arrow is present. Most other times the screens are just dark. This is the first time I can ssh into my box and look at processes running. Other times the box was dead to the world. This most often happens after: a) lock screen, or b) Screen sharing into the box remotely. When I arrive back at work, the system is on, the screen is black, ssh into it may or may not work. This time I tried to kill all my processes one by one. Nothing released the machine display. Screen sharing into it also yields a black screen. I wish I knew how to restart a process like "WindowServ." Reboot computer via ssh command and display are up and running again.
I ran MemTest extensively from single user mode. No errors. I switched boxes, for I bought two identical systems (one for server, one for workstation.) I switched hard drives and ram. Issues still exists on both machines.

Hey, since I have updated to 10.6.3 I have a similar issue. When I put my macbook pro to sleep and I come back a few hours later and turn my external monitor on I notice that the macbook is ON, BUT frozen! The time is usually a few hours back, so the macbook must have started up and frozen shortly after I had put it to sleep. There is no way to restart but to hold down the power button, SUPER annoying!
Hope this will get addressed in an update. Any way your problem is connected to sleep mode?

  • Re: Creative Cloud app loads then freezes with empty dialog box.

I have the same problem on Mac

I am experiencing the same issue. I upgraded my OS to Mavericks, I've downloaded the free trial of CC and am trying to download Muse, but the CC window is just blank with a spinning wheel. I've restarted, I've uninstalled and re-installed, but nothing. And am having a really hard time finding support on their website. This forum seems to be the only place to get 'live' support.  (?) perhaps I'm missing something.

  • New Computer Build with Windows 7 Adobe Flash Player won't install freezes with empty black box

I have just build a new windows 7 computer and every time I try to install adobe flash player, after clicking the install button, it goes to an empty black adobe box and freezes.  I have tried changing settings in IE, but I can't figure it out.  Will someone please help me.

Does it appear to be the same as my issue on win8.1?:

  • MacBookPro 15.4 keep freezing up with black dialog box to press power button until off and restart

MacBookPro15.4 less than a year old keep freezing/locking with black dialog box to press power button until off and restart THEN repeat successive times after restarting it?

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents – the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.

    riyazfrombangalore,
your 13-inch Mid 2009 MacBook Pro requires 1066 MHz RAM, but you have 1333 MHz RAM installed. Try replacing the 1333 MHz RAM with 1066 MHz RAM — Macs can be picky about the RAM which they find acceptable.

My MacBook Pro recently shut down on me all of a sudden. When I restarted it, it popped up with a gray box with 'OS X Utilities,' then listed various options such as 1. restore from time machine backup, 2. reinstall OS X, 3. get help online and 4. disk utility. what do I do now? I have not backed up to Time Machine in a few days, so I'm not sure I should restore from time machine backup, is there something else I can do? Help!

    Guitar21,
your MacBook Pro has booted into its Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities menu, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it get to the login screen now?

  • Eclipse blank grey dialogue box on startup, fixed with rm of workspace

    Hello,
I wanted to get coding today, but.... eclipse isn't starting up like it usually does. The splash screen pops up, it asks where I want my workspace folder, and then a small grey dialogue box pops up. It will never exit on it's own, pressing close does nothing, I have to kill it.
I tried running eclipse in a terminal in the hope it complained about a library error or something, but it's silent, it doesn't say anything back to me when run in a terminal. I'm not sure what other info to give you. It was working yesterday, and today it's not opening. I just shut down my computer after that day and started it up the next and it didn't work. So I removed the .eclipse folder in the hope that would clear some temporary data that was causing it, nothing.
I eventually moved my workspace and let it start fresh, it worked. Unfortunately, I need those files. Can I import the folder to fix this issue? How can I?

I'm experiencing the same problem. Additionally the whole update configuration seems to be damaged. There are no update sites listed anymore (I had quite many).
Furthermore I'm having some other problems (Eclipse icon seems to be missing, Saros plug-in and Gnome Battery Applet doesn't work anymore, no wallpaper on desktop) which all appeard after my update yesterday. Eclipse was updated too.
The following error messages are displayed when I start eclipse via terminal:
    (Eclipse:8741): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_width: assertion `GDK_IS_PIXBUF (pixbuf)' failed
    (Eclipse:8741): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_height: assertion `GDK_IS_PIXBUF (pixbuf)' failed
    (Eclipse:8741): Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_window_resize: assertion `width > 0' failed
    gdk-pixbuf2 was updated too.
In the update log I found this message regarding gdk-pixbuf2:
    [2011-06-30 22:58] g_module_open() failed for /usr/lib/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-gif.so: /lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.14' not found (required by /usr/lib/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-gif.so)
(more error messages follow which name the other libpixbufloader-*.so libraries.)
I can't open images anymore because the programs can not recognize the image format.
Therefore this seems to be a problem with gdk-pixbuf2. At least for me. Don't know how to fix this. Will try to downgrade gdk-pixbuf2. Will post results.
EDIT: Yup, that did the trick. At least for all the image related stuff. Eclipse starts fine now, I can see the wallpaper and the battery applet is working now.
Eclipse plug-ins are still messed-up but that's worth a separate topic.
EDIT2: I still can't figure out how that gdk-pixbuf stuff could make eclipse "forget" about the workspace.
Do you know what version last worked? How should I downgrade?

10.7.5 is not the latest system, 10.8.3 is. However your message sounds like  a Kernel Panic, does the message look similar to About "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) messages? If so, then if you can get the machine to restart normally then please post the Kernel Panic Report which you can find by following directions in How to log a kernel panic. Please post back with the KP log, and we can take a look. However if the machine continues to not restart then my guess is a hardware failure suck as a hard disk or failed RAM in which case you should take it into your local Apple Store or AASP for repair.

I see 10.6.3 in your profile---is tthat what you are trying to load? If so, it won't work. No PowerPC Mac like your G5 can run a Mac OS version higher than 10.5.8

My Macbook freezes up with a black box in the middle of the screen. Inside the black box is a message to power down and then re power up.
The Mac does re-start, but freezes up again after a while.
Does anybody know how to get rid of this problem?

    Hi Steven,
That is known as a kernel panic. They can be caused by many things. The "treatment" is to go through the steps listed here and try them out:

I am running wifi from verizon.  Recently changed from mifi2200 to jetpak 4620 in a 3G location.  Ibook running fine, desktop freezes.  If I can boot desktop in safe mode and get airport turned off in time. then I can reboot regularly and imac runs flawlessly with no wireless.Have run disk utilities and TechTool Pro rebuild etc, but nothing has worked.  How do I fine the culprit?

the power logix thing was really sad. apple changed so much after 10.4.8 that there wasn't a viable way to patch the software.
That statement is precisely why I don't believe in blindly updating the OS, especially in a non-standard machine.
We can't expect third parties to support us forever, and it is shameful to break something that works fine, except that we updated the OS....
I think that any upgrade or modification to a machine or the OS greatly increases the risk of trouble or incompatibility with current configuration and "new" system files.
After all, the component or software could only be tested as far as the current OS version when the component or software was released.
Beyond that, we are all "beta testing".
Following a beta tester protocol, and applying updates to a cloned system drive first, is a prudent way to approach updates, and not only for older, heavily modified machines.
After 10.4.8 and moreso with Leopard, the focus is primarily on Intel architecture, not PPC architecture.
Like it or not, we are all updating to the abyss of the extinction of our machines, unless we can be satisfied with the last stable version of OS that works well with our hardware and software.
I wish they would include the latest pkgs at least with software update.
Yes, having individual packages, rather than lump "OS X 10.x.x" updates would be nice.
This way, one could update as one sees fit. That is to say, for example, fix the Quicktime, but leave my Network alone, etc., etc.
In all fairness, Apple does provide for some breakdown of updates, but I believe there is much room for improvement, especially, as you point out, with regard to the core services portion of the OS.
Until then, I'll leave Software Update disabled.......

  • Trouble with grey boxes around certain text or words

We are having trouble with some of our
InDesign files. When the text is flowed in from Word there are grey outline boxes showing up around certain words or phrases. We have been working with the preferences and also the dictionary and nothing seems to fix our problem.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for your help!

Did you open the hyperlinks panel and delete the links, or change the highlight? You have to change the highlights one at a time, I think. (I hate Word's automatic hyperling nonsense).

Look in Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and see if you have any runaway processes using a lot of %CPU.
I would also strongly recommend running Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode. If it reports errors you can Google them or post them here.
