Dreamweaver previews first Server Side Include Only (SSI)

Dreamweaver CC and 2014 preview the first Server Side Include (SSI) only, even if the Adobe extension is installed (Using the SSI extension in Dreamweaver to create page headers | Adobe Developer Connection)
How do I set Dreamweaver to preview multiple (more than one) SSI's?
Example Code:
<!doctype html>
<html>
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<title>Untitled Document</title>
</head>
<body>
<!--#include virtual="/content.shtml" -->
<!--#include virtual="/content2.shtml" -->
</body>
</html>
The code above will preview the text in "Content.shtml" but will not display the text in "content2.shtml".
For troubleshooting purposes, I have reduced the content in each file to only single lines of basic text.
Please advise. Thanks.
Update:
Dreamweaver Live View will show all of the server side includes. However the "Design View" and "Preview in Browser" will only show the one ssi.
The following Preference settings are enabled:
-Preview using temporary file
-Show contents of included file
Update 2:
I discovered that server side includes have been removed from the Dreamweaver interface, inferred from this article: A Look at the Modernized Dreamweaver CC : Adobe Dreamweaver Team Blog. If Server Side Includes were removed, can they be added again using the Server Behavior extension?

The issue is fixed in Dreamweaver 2014.1

  • Cannot Preview Server Side Includes in Browser

    I am working on building a new site using server side
    includes for the main header graphic and menu items. For testing
    purposes, I created an .html file with one <div> tag
    containing a single graphic and an .shtml file with the server side
    include code placed in the <head> area. (Doesn't seem to work
    if I place it anywhere within the <body> tag... not sure
    why). At any rate, I can see the SSI in the design view of my
    document, but cannot see it whenever I go to preview the page in my
    browser (Firefox 2.0.0.3). Everything works fine if I upload the
    files to my Web server and view them that way, but why can't I see
    the SSI when working on my local files? The Dreamweaver help files
    explain that I should be able to do so, but it's just not working.
    Well, I'm now at a loss and cannot figure out if I'm doing
    something wrong of if this is just a bug of some kind. Can anyone
    help me to solve this problem so that I can get back on track?
    Much appreciated,
    ~Greg

    This is not going to work at all. You cannot place body HTML
    in the <head>
    region.

  • Spry accordion widget - SSI (server side include) as content in the panel

    After having inserted the following command <!--# include file = "content2.asp" -> in the accordion Panel Content I get an error in Dreamweaver - every time I open the file. See the error in the attached picture.
    Once all files are uploaded to the server it works apparently without problems or script errors.
    Is there anyone who can help me to use SSI "server side include" as content in accordion panels?

    Thanks for your reply.
    The fault lay in the SSI file. This file contained these tag:
    </ html>
    And of course the tag </ html> generate an error if the tag is inserted in the content of the accordion panel via ssi file.

  • SSI Server Side Includes searchable?

    I'm creating a site that uses Server Side Includes to pull
    content into pages. The client wants to include a Search function
    to the site. My question is can a search function not only find the
    SSI pages but pull them up directly?
    Please see
    http://www.trainride.org/mtm_index.shtml
    The 2nd line of the bottom navigation are links that pull
    content into the page with server side includes. Is there a way to
    search and load the content pulled in by the server side includes?
    Any help would REALLY be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

    Melissa,
    I believe that the search engines create their indexes using
    spiders
    that walk through all of the browser links in your site. The
    content of
    your SSIs get embedded into your page on the server, so there
    is no
    actual link by the time the page gets to the browser.
    So, I think you need to add a hyperlink to your SSI pages
    some (maybe
    hidden) place in your site so the spiders will find them.

  • SSI (Server Side Include)

    Hi folks.
    I have installed J2EE SDK 1.4_03 and I'm interested in using it to develop my personal website locally on my PC. At a later date I wish to upload it to a paid web host.
    The reason I have chosen to run a server rather than just accessing html files directly from my hard-drive is because I would like to utilize SSI (Server Side Include). That's really all. I'm not really interested in doing anything too interactive between the viewer and the server! Not yet anyway.
    I have found various information online but nothing is working. I'm sure there is information that I am missing or something further I need to do to actually initiate it. The information I have found says to un-comment the various section in the file default-web.xml located in this folder c:\Sun\AppServer\domains\domain1\config for this to be activated globally. Below is a copy and pasted chuck of text that I have un-commented within this file..
    Secondly I'm putting my test html pages in the folder C:\Sun\AppServer\domains\domain1\docroot using the include syntax that I have found all over the net such as <!--#ECHO var="DATE_LOCAL" --> & others.
    I can not get the thing to work. I'm guessing there is more to it. For a start... am I putting my html pages in the correct folder for this to work? And Is there something I need to do to activate the ssi servlet? The only reason I'm putting my test pages in this folder is because the page at http://localhost:8080 says that I can overwrite the index file to replace it. Is this the correct place for this?
    Also this class has me thinking... org.apache.catalina.servlets.SsiInvokerServlet Am I suppose to download this separately and put it somewhere? If so where is it? And where do I put it? I am horribly confused and I can not find any further information on this.
    If anyone could help me out on this topic I'd really appreciate it. btw, I'm a beginner in this area... I'd really just like to server html pages with ssi features at this point. Nothing more. The server seems to be working.
    Thanks,
    Tane

    You can always use jsp:include or Apache tiles or something similar. I have not used SSI in a while, but you may want to check out those technologies, as they offer more than simply includes.

  • Are Server-Side Includes in Dreamweaver ok to use?

    Hi, I'm considering using the built-in feature, 'Server-Side Includes' in Dreamweaver CS3. Can anyone tell me if this is ok to use, or is there a better way of approaching this process?
    Many thanks in advance!

    Yes, server-side includes are an excellent feature. Just make sure that your server supports them. On many servers, you need to change the file name extension from .html to .shtml.
    The other thing to remember is that a server-side include should just be a fragment of a page. It should not include a DOCTYPE declaration or duplicate <html>, <head>, or <body> tags.

  • What language should I use if I am a beginner to using SSI (server side includes)?

    I want to start using server side includes and understand how to also code them by hand.  What is the easiest way to begin?  Do I just php?
    -Kate

    First question you need to ask your Host is if they support server-side includes and which document extensions you can use.
    Common extensions:
    .shtml, .shtm, .php, .asp, .cf.

  • Server-side includes in css

    I am trying to incorporate server-side includes for my nav.
    links. I created the website using css. I am able to preview the
    navigationals (with proper links when I hovered) with F12 iexlorer,
    but when I upload everything and view it from IE, Mozilla, etc.
    they aren't there. My left nav. is totally blank.
    I am very new to web making and learned what I could from
    internet sites. Here are examples of my ssi code:
    My index page has a php extension (index.php) and has this
    inserted for the include:
    <?php include("menu.html");?>
    menu.html looks like:
    <ul>
    <li><a href="index.php">Home</a></li>
    <li><a href="searchplans.php">Search Plans
    </a></li>
    <li><a href="modifydesign.php">Modify

    <li><a href="purchaseplan.php">Purchase
    Plan</a></li>
    <li><a href="contactus.php">Contact
    Us</a></li>
    </ul>
    I know that my server supports ssi, because I previously
    created a very basic site (not using css) using shtm extensions and
    an includes folder. When I called them they said that they support
    php too, but thought it was a problem with my settings in
    Dreamweaver.
    If you have any advice, I would be very grateful. I am
    banging my head on this one.

    Be sure to upload menu.html to your server.

  • Trouble Testing Server Side Includes using personal web sharing

    I am using the book "Standard complant websites using dreamweaver 8" One of the exercises has me testing that server side includes are enabled by creating two files ssi_test.shtml and hello.html. I have placed these two files in the documents subfolder which web server is the main folder.
    Since I only see a blank page when I test, the book says I need to tweak the Apache configuration to enable SSI. It says to open httpd.conf file (which I can not find) . I am suppose to insert the following lines: AddType text/html .shtml and Addhandler server-parsed .shtml
    Where is this file httpd.conf file located?
    How do I modify it?

  • Spry Widget as a Server Side Include

    I am new to using SSI. I guess one question is: does the

    neither is working. It shows up in design view, but not preview in

    <link href="../SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarVertical.css"

    {imgDown:"SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarDownHover.gif",
    imgRight:"SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarRightHover.gif"});
    //-->
    </script>
    Does anyone see what I am doing wrong? Also, when I insert it
    as a SSI, does it matter if it is a file or a virtual?

    Create a page that contains ONLY this -
    <p>woohoo</p>
    and save it as woohoo.monkeybutt.
    Then create another page, click in the Design view, and
    insert a server-side
    include. Browse to and select woohoo.monkeybutt.
    Save this new page as "page.shtml".
    Preview it in the browser (with temp files enabled in your
    PREFERENCES).

  • Server side includes vs Library assets?

    I like server side include because I just see a single line referring to the included file, and that keep my code free of 'irrelevant' detaiuls.
    However, I cannot preview my program in a local browser (because the include takes place on the server, and not locally on my machine).
    Is there a compromise?  Is there a way to NOT have Dreamweaver CS4 (on my iMac) expand the included library code?

    I am not using anyPHP in this project, so I do not specify it.  I tried specifying in, but that made no difference.
    http://localhost shows me the default index file that is in //Application/MASMP/htdocs (sonce I used MAMP to get PHP up and running).
    The issue seems to be to do with relative paths.
    On my remote server I am installig the files into a folder named /NWC/  The domain name (www.BilliantlySimple.com) is set up to point to that folder.
    I can see the page EXACTLY as I would expect it to be in design view, HOWEVER, when I go to live view it is not finding all of the files that it need to include.  Id does find the such as the CSS file (included with the line: <link href="../_css/Test.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" />) BUT any image files included for, say background-image: url(../_images/bg_dot.gif); it does NOT find (even though images in the page itself it can find!)
    I  am using Pop Magic Menus 2 and including those with these lines:
         <link href="../_includes/p7pmm/p7PMMh07.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="all" />
         <script type="text/javascript" src="../_includes/p7pmm/p7PMMscripts.js"></script>
    BUT it does NOT find the files to include ONLY in Live view!!!!
    You can see what I am working on at http://www.BilliantlySimple.com but since I cannot use Live view to see the finished result I have to put the code onto the server to see how it is behaving.

  • Server-side includes question

    I preface this all by saying that I have never used a
    server-side include but am considering it based on a suggestion
    from a thread yesterday.
    If I created a server-side include file that contained only
    my title banner/nav bar and placed that file at the top of each of
    my pages, would it then be possible to have content (Flash, in this
    case) from an editable region in a template-based file display on
    top of that banner? Can they overlap, I guess is what I'm asking.
    Thanks - JAY

    DW is quite smart enough to manage your page links.
    Plus, if you can use virtual includes, then the link to the
    include files
    will be the same for any page in any location in your site.
    So - you have no link worries in this sense. But a more
    specific example
    that leads you to ask your question might help get a better
    answer here.

    Using an editable region for a section-specific navigation
    include is a
    great way to do it.
    Good luck!

  • Insert menu - no Server-Side Includes? Help!

    Ok so I'm very new to Dreamweaver and web design in general. I bought the Adobe Dreamweaver Classroom in a Book and now, in Chapter 6, I'm being asked to use the Insert menu to choose Server-Side Includes... but there's nothing like that under the Insert menu.
    I'm taking this step-by-step - also purchased Jennifer Robbins' "Learning Web Design" (in which she recommends Dreamweaver) so I'm trying to make it through BASIC Dreamweaver before going into Ms. Robbins examples... and I'm stuck... any help or suggestions? I did upgrade my CS6 Design & Web Premium package to the Creative Cloud versions - is this possibly why this menu item is 'missing'?
    Thanks,
    Clinton

    In a nutshell, yes.
    The Insert menu in the Cloud only version of Dreamweaver CS6 was radically overhauled in the most recent Cloud update
    http://helpx.adobe.com/dreamweaver/using/changes-insert-options-creative-cloud.html
    Adobe has created a headache for users with this rather sudden, radical overhaul of the Insert menu without any prior warning - and no real obvious benefits for anyone. Seems to be a case of change for the sake of change
    We now have two vastly different Insert menus of DW CS6: Cloud and non-Cloud.
    It's a poorly timed design decision by Adobe with unfortunate impacts on both newbies (trying to learn from CS6 training material) and DW veterans whose workflow is interrupted for no good reason. The change should have been made in CS7 when everyone had time to adjust.
    As you can see from the link above, there is no longer an option for SSI's via the menu. You'll have to hand code it.

  • Server-Side Include Issue - Please Help

    I am having trouble using server-side includes in
    Dreamweaver. When I use the SSI to insert the header file, the
    header document shows up on the page in design view, but I cannot
    click anything. The cursor turns into a "no sign" no matter where
    it is on the page. I cannot see anything but the header document,
    and I cannot click outside of it or anywhere else in design view.
    When I test the whole document in a web browser it actually seems
    to work just fine. I see the header and the other text on the page
    (unlike in dreamweaver, I cannot see anything but the header). Also
    in Dreamweaver code view, the php tags and the included filename
    are in red. This is the code for the test document:

    What does the code look like in header.php? Does it have
    <html>, <head>
    and <body> tags? It should not.

  • Server Side Includes not displaying in DW CS3 design view

    I have this code in my page (see below):
    When I open the file in Dreamweaver MX 2004 in design view,
    the page displays correctly. That is, I see the correct styles from
    the style sheet contained in Head_Standard.html and the logo/menu
    in Logo_TopMenu.html
    When I open the page in DW CS3, I do not see the effects of
    the style sheet and I do not see the logo/menu.
    However, when I change the code for the first include from:
    virtual="/ServerSide
    to
    virtual="
    ../../ServerSide
    then the page renders correctly in Dreamweaver CS3.
    My first reaction was: what?! And my question is: how do I
    use a root reference inside the head and get it to display properly
    in DW CS 3?

    "Go to Edit > Preferences > Invisible Elements >
    Server-Side Includes (Check this box) to show contents of included
    file"
    I already do this.
    For me:
    /ServerSide... does NOT work
    ../../ServerSide... works
    So, a relative reference works and a reference to the root
    does not. I have over 20 websites with root references and I need
    this to work in DW9.
