Driver performance with CLOB

Hi,
I use the "thin" driver with Apple's WebObjects and I noticed that when I do a fetch on a table with a CLOB column, it take more than one minute to get the results back when the result set is more than 500 rows. So I did some tests with SQLGrinder, a SQL tool that also uses JDBC to talk to databases, and it's the same slowdown. But if I remove the CLOB column, the fetch takes less than 3 seconds. Does Oracle's JDBC driver is know to be slow in those situations ? I use the 9.2.0.5.0 driver with a 1.4 JDK (Apple supplied on Mac OS X 10.3).

Hi,
How big is the data that is being stored in the CLOB column. Ideally in case of LOBs and BFILEs the data is read either in chunks or as streams and that needs to be separately coded. I am not sure if fetching the column directly using a select would be fast.
You can try selecting the columns other then the CLOB column and see the performance.
Here are some benchmarck results published on asktom. You might be interested in it.

  • Slow USB/drive performance with new (Oct 2011 release) MacBookPro

I am a Final Cut editor, and began using FCP X about three months ago. I was using my wife's 13" MacBook Pro (previous revision 2.7GHZ i7 dual core, 4GB RAM, OS X 10.6.8) to play with it, and I was able to edit a few projects from a USB 2 drive.
However, on my new (2.4GHZ i7 Quad core, 4GB RAM, OS 10.7.2 part: MD322LL/A) the same video project is choppy, and there's a spinning beach ball when quitting Final Cut that lasts about 25 seconds.
Any ideas why the newer MBP with better graphics and quad cores would be having more trouble with video playback than the (slightly) older dual core machine? The only other difference between them is my computer came pre-loaded with Lion, and the 13" has snow leopard. I don't think I can install Snow Leopard on the new computer to eliminate that variable.
I suspect there might be something going on with the USB port speeds, but beyond running the hardware test (doing it now) I don't know how to test this and know whether it's a "good" speed or not.
    Thanks,

  • Improving hard drive performance with onboard RAID.

After completing a recent PPBM5 test and being disappointed I would like to improve the disc performance of my system and would appreciate the thoughts of the forum.
    System:
    MB: Asus P6X58D-E
    CPU: Intel Core i7 930 2.8GHz
    RAM: 12GB (6 x 2GB) Corsair Dominator DDR
    Graphics: 1.28GB Asus GTX 470 3.3GHz
My current hard drive set-up is:
    OS (Win 7 64bit)
    WD Velociraptor

    SATA II 3Gb/s
    Drive Bay (back-up and archive)
    Various bare drives
My motherboard has 6 x 3Gb/s and 2 x 6Gb/s SATA ports and has an onboard RAID, using an Intel ICH10R Southbridge controller.  The motherboard also has USB 3.0.  I have a DVD drive using one of the SATA ports.
Although I understand the principal of RAID I’ve never used it before.  So, what would be the best way of improving performance?
I presume that as all my drives currently have data on them I’ll have to copy this data to another drive before formatting them and then creating the RAID drive.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts and suggestions.
    Many thanks.

Thanks Harm.  I've gone through your suggestions.
As my computer has to function for several other tasks in addition to video editing, I realise that I will have to compromise somewhat on the performance to make sure that it's still useable for other things.
Using Black Vipers tips I've reduced the processes running from 100+ to 89.
Indexing and compression turned off for all drives except Storage, which isn't used for video related tasks.  Although it wouldn't surprise me to learn that having any indexing turned on will have a degree of drain on resources.
    Discs all defragged.
    Media Cache cleared.
Any further advice on how to optimise the hard drives would be very much appreciated.

How to improve Oracle Veridata Compair pair performance with tables that have big (30-40MB)CLOB/BLOB fileds ?

Can you use insert .. returning .. so you do not have to select the empty_clob back out.
[I have a similar problem but I do not know the primary key to select on, I am really looking for an atomic insert and fill clob mechanism, somone said you can create a clob fill it and use that in the insert, but I have not seen an example yet.]

  • Performance with Referenced Master on Time Capsule vs. Attached Hard Drive

My managed master library on my MBP is getting too big and I am running out of hard drive space.  I am considering going to a "hybrid" situation, where all projects that have already been edited and stored in folders can be relocated to referenced.
Considering my options, I am wondering how Aperture will perform with referenced masters stored on the networked Time Capsule drive, as opposed to having to plug in a USB3 or Thunderbolt hard drive every time I want to re-edit those old photos (which is not very often).
I came across this article, which says to use a locally mounted drive:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3252
However, I am not sure exactly what that means.  When I connect to the Time Capsule, it does show up as a mounted drive with a "data" folder that I can interact and store things on.  Not sure if this counts as "local", but from my experience it seems to move pretty quick.
Does anyone have any experience storing the referenced masters on a Time Capsule.  My plan would then be to periodically back that one Time Capsule folder where all masters will be placed to a harddrive stored off-site and also set CrashPlan up to backup that one folder.  Thanks for any input... otherwise, I guess I will test it and see how it goes, since I rarely/never go back and re-edit images.

It can be done, but you are "saving" the cost of an inexpensive external drive by accepting the cost of a convoluted administrative set-up.  IME, for one person or any organization small enough to _not_ have a dedicated IT person/staff, that is a false economy.  Typically, one of the admin tasks won't get done or won't get done right (you might need more space for back-ups on your Time Capsule, or you might forget exactly how you set up the TC drive to hold your Originals and put off moving more to it).
Drives are inexpensive, and bargains.  For rarely loaded referenced Originals you don't _need_ anything faster than USB 2 (FW400 or any faster connection rec'd).  Additionally, if you have room on your Time Capsule for your referenced Originals, then you have room for their backup.  Put the referenced Originals on a new external drive, and back it up to Time Capsule.
And then you don't have to worry about pulling your Originals through a network.  They will be locally mounted.
    My 2¢.

  • How can I improve NFSv3 file performance with MythTV thru a NAS Drive?

Basically, I have both my MythTV combined frontend/backend machine and a NAS Drive connected via gigabit ethernet connections.
The NAS drive stores my recordings, shared via NFSv3 (because that's all the NAS drive came with, unfortunatly).
Now, my problem is that I can record or watch multiple *seperate* HD files simultaneously, travelling back and forth from the NAS without problem.
However when I try to watch the same file *While it's still being recorded*, after around 20 minutes the network connection is full/overloaded (between the mythserver and the NAS drive) and playback grinds to a halt (It doesn't stop the recording, just the playback).
It used to happen much quicker when I was only using a 100mb connection.
As i've said, this doesn't happen at ALL with seperate files, just only if i watch the *same* file that's being recorded at the same time.
Is there anyway (bar just having the recordings on a Hard Drive within my backend) that I can stop this problem? Is it because I use NFSv3 on the NAS drive? are there any options I can change in the /etc/exports file on the NAS drive that would help? Thanks
If you want me to post what my NAS drive (Readynas Duo V2) has in its /etc/exports file, I will

Post the file but I dunno how many Archer are using NFSv3... ;/

  • Performance with external display

    Hello,
when I'm connecting my 19'' TFT to the MacBook the performance (with the same applications runnig) is realy bad. It tooks longer to switch between apps and if I don't use an app for some time, it can took up to 30 sec to "reactivate" the app.
Because the HD is working when I switch apps, it looks like the OS is swapping. My question: Would it help to upgrade the MacBook to 2GB ram? AFAIC the intel card uses shared memory.
    Thanks for your help
    Till
    MacBook 1.83 GHz/1GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

How much RAM do you have? Remember that the MB does not have dedicated VRAM like some computers do and that it uses the system RAM to drive the graphics chipset.
I use my MB with the mini-DVI to DVI adapter to drive a 20" widescreen monitor without any of the problems that you describe, but I have 2GB of RAM. If you only have the stock 512MB of RAM, that may be part of what you are seeing.

  • Can i partition my HD now for fcpx since i didn't do it when i downloaded it. my performance with fcpx is terrible terrible performance

When i downloaded FCPX i was told I really didn't need to partition my hard drive. But my performance with fcpx is terrible from rendering constantly to waiting for a minute after you click for it to do it. I turn off the rendring, I transcoded the media to pro res went to file and hit transcode. but still i mean it crashes, buggy, suggy and it takes hours to do anything. I have my media on a external drive but i did screw up and put some media on internal drive. iMac OSX 10.7.2  3.06 GHZ Core 2 Duo. EX HD LaCie on a 800 firewire.

Partitioning the internal drive is - imho! - completely useless for UNIX-systems such as MacOS, due to excessive usage of (hidden!) temp-files.
And, especially a too small int. HDD partition for the system will brake any app 'til a full halt.
plus, 10.7. has some issues with managing Timemachine backups when it comes to large files as video - again, if the intHDD/OS drive is too small, it gets iffy.
at last >30GBs free, only codecs and material as intended by Cupertino = no probs here (on a much smaller/older set-up).

  • Inspiron 9300 cd drive performance

well, i put arch linux on my laptop last week. its one with ide drives, not sata. dell never officially doc'd a difference between the two and put out very few with sata in them. i worked for them so i had the inside info on that, lol.
anyway, basically, since i've had it, i've always had issues with the cd/dvd drive performance, some bios issue and no option in the bios to force it to work properly, anyway, im not the only one who's had that problem
but since day one, with windows xp on it, never got the drive to read or write dvds past 1.2x, for cd's its roughly 10x and the drive is rated 8x dvd and 32 or 40 for cd's
anyway, even vista never got full speed. fedora 6/7 did though, and so did ubuntu, i think they were using an ata_piix driver or something, i had read about it when i was using fedora 4 but couldnt figure out how to recompile the kernel
basically, im having the same problem here with archlinux. wondering how i could get ata_piix working or if theres something newer to replace it

    Hi
I have been having same problems importing CDs , After Googling and reading various forums learnt latest version of I tunes has a glitch . Lets hope they sort it out soon and release update , What I did after reading forums was to go into I tunes , go to tabs at top FILE , EDIT etc, select preferences in drop down menu , Then you have to untick option to automatically get track names .
Put CD into CD drive , when CD appears without track details go into ADVANCED drop down menu at top ask to get track names , once they have appeared you can select import CD and it works fine , well did for me , if you go to i Lounge forum there is lot of info on it and probably wriiten clearer than I have . Good luck

  • Very Slow SMB Performance with DroboShare

    Hi there,
We have a big issue with a DroboShare NAS device connected to a Drobo Drive (FAT32):
If we connect to our DroboShare NAS directly via LAN, the performance with SMB is terrible. Browsing folders takes minutes until the contents (15 items) are shown, opening and saving files takes minutes.
If we connect the Drobo via USB to one of our Macs and then share it via SMB, it is fast as ****.
Problem is that we cannot leave it this way, as we only have portable macs, so if they are removed, nobody can access the Drobo.
The problem nevertheless seems to be restricted to Macs: If we connect to the DroboShare with Linux or Windows Boxes, everything is as fast as expected.
Does anyone has similar issues with weak performance and/or knows how this can improved?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Simon

I just ported netatalk (AFP) over to the DroboShare.

  • Can I use a solid state drive (SSD) with a G4 1 GHz powerbook? If so, how do I do it?

    Hi:
Can I use a solid state drive (SSD) with a G4 1 GHz powerbook? If so, how do I do it? Thanks.
    fromx001

fromx001 I believe you can use a SSD as internal drive, of course make sure to buy an ide/ata. There are all sorts of sizes up to 480 GB also in the ide/ata standard. You should however research carefully your purchase, as the performances of your SSD are going to have to rely on firmware "garbage collection", as the older operating systems haven't been written with SSD in mind.
Mac Man JW: some people depend on Classic as a brody said, other people need a phone modem from time to time, other people use the laptop in harsh environments, and at -15C and below, LCD screens easily crack and break; NOT the powerbook which has hot air towards the screen (and it's a machine that heats quite a lot). My alu Powerbook 12", which was *not* treated with velvet gloves, only once had a cracked screen: a cleaning lady had stepped over it (!!!!) no joke. And in normal / light use today, it is still pretty decent and usable.

  • Extremely slow performance with Radeon HD 7870

    Hi,
I am using a number of Adobe programs on my new Windows 8 64 bit system, with 16 gigs of ram, an Intel Core i5 2.67ghz, and AMD Radeon HD 7870 2 gig. All the programs (including After Effects and Illustrator) work very well with the exception of Photoshop CS6 64 bit, which has extremely slow performance with Use Graphics Processor enabled in my preferences (which Photoshop selects by default). If I turn off Use Graphics Processor, the slow performance vanishes. If I change Drawing Mode to Basic, there might be a slightly detectable improvement over Normal and Advanced, but it's still horribly slow. The refresh rate seems to be just a few frames per second. Everything is slow: brushes, zooming, panning, everything.
I've tried changing the settings I've seen suggested elsewhere: I switched Cache levels to 2, history states to 10, and tile size to 128k. No effect. Photoshop is currently at the default of using 60% of available ram. Efficiency has remained at 100% throughout all my tests. Also, this slow performance has affected me from the moment I installed Photoshop; it didn't crop up after previous good performance. The problem exists regardless of the size or number of documents I have open. Performance is still terrible even when I create a 500 x 500 pixel blank new canvas and try a simple task like drawing with the brush.
Photoshop is fully up to date, and so are my graphics drivers (Catalyst version 13.1). Any help would be greatly appreciated; at the moment performance is so bad in Photoshop that it's unusable with graphics acceleration enabled. Thanks in advance for replying.

    Great news!
I followed your suggestion, Noel, and uninstalled my drivers with the Catalyst Uninstall Utility (which I hadn't used before), rebooted, reinstalled Catalyst 13.2 Beta 7, rebooted, deleted the PS Prefs, started PS, and now the performance is radically improved!
It baffles me why I would need to do a clean driver uninstall in a new system environment that has only ever had this video card, and is only a few months old, but that action seems to be what's improved the situation. Note that because I deleted the PS preferences, the good performance now occurs with the default Use Graphics Processor enabled, and Drawing Mode set to Advanced (with every feature in the Advanced dialog checked except 30bit display).
Having no reference point, I can't tell for sure if performance is as good as it theoretically ought to be for my system specs, but using the standard 13px brush is only slightly laggy behind the cursor, even if I become reckless and squiggle on the canvas violently. It wasn't just sluggish response before: Photoshop seemed to be in pain trying to draw the line segments as it laboured to catch up to the cursor. That is pretty much gone now.
Much more tellingly, zooming and panning the canvas is like it ought to be, responsive and clean, more or less like it was for me in CS4 with my old Nvidia 9600GT. The poor performance with zooming and panning was the most worrying aspect of the issue. It's a great relief to see these working more properly now.
I have to confess I'm a little embarrassed to have drug you through all this hassle only to discover that something as rudimentary as properly cleaning out the drivers would be the apparent solution. I never would have imagined that doing that, with such a new and stable system, would make any difference, since I don't have a legacy of older drivers dotting my hard drive. In any event, I'm really grateful that you guys took the time to try to help me.
In the interest of completeness, here's the relevant portion of my system info after doing the reinstall steps I mentioned above:

As you can see, the Microsoft Basic Render Driver still appears as a Video Card in the list. This presumably has something to do with Windows 8, and I really don't know if its presence here is still a sign that my card is not being used to its optimal capability. I have a hunch that the slight lag that I am still experiencing with the brush when Use Graphics Processor is on -- totally absent with the acceleration turned off -- implies that Photoshop is still unable to take maximum advantage of my card. I would assume that the brush tool should be more responsive with acceleration on than off, in a rig without any issues, but that's just assumption on my part. If you turn off Use Graphics Processor on your systems, is the brush tool more or less responsive?
But again, panning the canvas with the hand tool is now extremely responsive, without any screen tearing or visible lag, and that's a massive improvement over the total meltdown of performance I was suffering from before.
Thanks again very much for your help. I'm grateful to all of you who took the time to chime in.

  • What is the "best" internal hard drive compatible with macbook pro 13.3" product number: MD101LL/A  that does not damage OS?

I'm looking for an upgrade in space ( 750gb - 1 TB) and performance on the hard drive, but I have read in many forums that many "compatible" hard drives may damage the OS. I plan on installing bootcampt with Windows 7 and the latest Mac OS. I'm wondering if anyone has updated their HD and if they've experienced any problems with it, or if anyone has any suggestions. Thank you for your advice in advance!

I'm wondering if anyone has had any particular experience with the Seagate 1TB solid state hybrid drive (found here: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Solid-Hybrid-2-5-Inch-ST1000LM014/dp/B00B99JUBQ). It boasts SSD-like speeds at a fraction of the cost, and its right around my budget, but perhaps its too good to be true?
I have two of those Seagate SSHDs, using one as the internal drive in my primary MBP.  Boot and shutoff times are dramatically less than before (using 7200 rpm HGST HDDs).  In other respects, I have no complaints regarding the drive performance.  I can recommend them based on my limited experience (~3 months).  The $99 price does look very attractive.
Note that when you install a HDD of larger capacity in a MBP, it should be reflected in your backup strategy.  Do you have a backup drive to accommodate the additional data that you will be able to store on the new internal HDD?
    Ciao.

  • Bad performance with brandnew system

    hello,
i set up a completely new win7-64bit based on a fresh osx (snow-leopard update) on a fresh harddisk....and i have very bad 3d performance with only 3 (!!) programs installed. i am working with autodesk 3ds max and autocad and both run very slow. my last system was win7-64bit, too, but running MUCH faster.
it must be a driver problem, but i dont know how to change the nvidia driver.
    edit:
after having changed driver from directx 9 to open-gl performance is very fast.
    please help.

    Hi Bruno
In the following Re: Generic Sync: Object can not be deserilized / Multiple synchronization call you had mentioned that you are using MI 2.5 SP16 Client.  For your information MI doesnt support Windows Mobile 5 OS on SP16 but only from SP18 does it support this OS.  Have you tried upgrading the client to any of the SPs i had mentioned in the above thread and then checked the performance?

  • JDBC ADPATER -  "Unsupported feature" in XI with CLOB type

    Hi experts,
I have 15 patch XI level.  In  a stored procedure i  use  an in and out parameter with CLOB type.  I get the exception:
com.sap.aii.af.ra.ms.api.DeliveryException: Error processing request in sax parser: Error when executing statement for table/stored proc. 'XXXX'): java.sql.SQLException: Unsupported feature
If  i change the type CLOB by VARVHAR in the XI's XML (Design: Integration Buider), all works fine.
The strored procedure has this parameter like CLOB.
    My question is
Is not possible to use the CLOB type?
SAP recognize that it, it's possible:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/2e/96fd3f2d14e869e10000000a155106/frameset.htm
Sorry for my english. Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Please make sure you use the 10.x driver for full stored procedure CLOB support.
A CLOB is a not comparable Datatype in SQL.
