DRM and Shared Members in Essbase & Planning
Hi,
Many years ago we implemented Razza and one of the difficulties we had was in handling shared members in Essbase and Planning applications. The workaround as I recall was to use a prefix in alternate hierarchies, and strip it out before exporting. But this did not allow for a single place to maintain a node. Is there a best practice for handling shared members in DRM?

DRM now supports shared members in the application. This application functionality used configurable suffixes. You can read about this in the DRM User Guide.
This makes Essbase integration virtually seemless since Essbase will treat the first occurance of a member encountered during the dimension load process as the base member and any subsequent occurances of that member as shared members. Planning, however, requires shared members to be marked as such and thus depending on how the hierarchies are maintained in DRM and then exported, it is possible for the shared member to appear before the base member, which will cause Planning to raise an error. This can be accommodated with two pass loads and other techniques.
Also note that this information could be dated as I haven't personally been on a project that fed hyperion Planning for a couple of years. Regards.

Enabling Duplicates / Disabling Shared Members in Essbase Studio
I am building an ASO cube using Essbase Studio in EPM 11.1.2. I need to check the *"Ignore duplicate members, do not move*" option in the outline build properties for one of my dimensions. However, the check-box for this is greyed out for some reason. How do I activate this option? Also, is there any other way to disable shared-members? I want my dimension to contain duplicate members and not shared members. But the build rule is currently treating two members with the same name as shared members.
We've figured out how it works. You should set minischema first for txt file.

Handling HFM Shared Members in Essbase Analytics Link (EAL)
We have an entity dimension in HFM with Shared Members in an alternate hierarchy. The shared members happen to be parents and when the metadata is synchronized in EAL, only the shared parent is brought into the alternate hierarchy in our EAL cube. We'd like to find a way to bring all of the descendents of the shared parent into our cube but Essbase does not allow it. Is there a way to prefix the shared members during synchronization so the EAL cube contains the same structure as HFM while accommodating the need for unique member names in Essbase?
I've seen this kind of behaviour in EAL when using both 11.1.1.3 versions. Could you let me know what are your EPM and EAL versions?
May be your EAL will require a patch.

Aliases on Shared Members not in Essbase
<p>I used HAL to create alternate rollups using shared members inmy Accounts dimension and in a custom dimension (Customers). The aliases for the shared members appear in Planning, butafter refreshing Essbase, the aliases are not in Essbase; only themember names. When I add a shared member manually inPlanning, the alias is populated in Essbase. Does anyone havean idea of how to get the aliases in Essbase?</p>
<p>I realize that the alias will display when reporting on it. The reason it came up is because you can't see the alias whenperforming a member selection. It's an inconvenience, not ashow stopper. I just thought it was strange that the aliaswould go into Essbase when the shared member was added manually,but not when added using HAL. Seems like a bug to me.</p>

EPMA Shared Members not reflecting in Planning application post deployment
Hi,
I have added a member in 'Entity' dimnesion. The same member is also added in an alternate hiererchy as shared member (Using Insert member option in dimension library). When I refresh the application view, I do see both the original member and shared member in application vieiw. But post deployment, only the base member is reflected in planning application and not the shared member.
I have redeployed the application multiple times now, but i am still not able to see the shared members reflected in Planning application.
Kindly let me know if you have any idea on the same or faced a similar issue?

Multiple shared members in ASO outline
<BR>I am building an outline with one primary and three alternate hierarchies within one of the dimensions of an Aggregate Storage (ASO) cube. All of the leaf members in each of the alternate hierarchies are shared members of a member in the primary hierarchy. The non-shared member is a leaf in some cases and a summary point in others. All hierarchies are stored. <BR><BR>When I try to save the outline, I get a long list of verification errors. For the stored members to which the shared members refer, Essbase is complaining that "This member has multiple copies of same shared member in at least one stored hierarchy. See other messages for which members and which hierarchies." For the shared members, Essbase complains that "Aggregate storage outlines only allow a shared member once in a stored hierarchy." For the alternate hierarchies, Essbase complains that "This stored hierarchy has multiple copies of same shared member. Remove extra member or change hierarchy to be dynamic."<BR><BR>However, I did a find on a handful of the members that Essbase was complaining about and in all cases have found only one instance of each shared member in each alternate hierarchy. I heard back from Hyperion Tech Support again. Turns out it's not a defect after all. It's actually a subtle technicality in the restrictions on shared members with ASO. The first restriction, which is explained in the outline verification error message, is that you can only have one instance of a shared member within a given stored alternate hierarchy. The second restriction is that you cannot have any shared members within a given stored alternate hierarchy where the non-shared instances of the members are ancestors/descendants of each other. Unfortunately, when this restriction is violated, EAS gives the same error message as it does for the first restriction, so it's a bit harder to debug.<BR><BR>Hope this saves someone some grief.<BR>-Silvester

1) What is the best possible way to create aliases for shared members (already present in the outline not new ones) ?

The Easiest Way of Doing it is by Parent-Child References..
COnstruct a Data File using Parent child Reference and then Add a Third Column in which you provide Alias name.
In the Field Property of Third Column make is as Alias and tag it to proper dimension and in Dimension build Setting go to Dimension Build tab and check "Allow property changes".
In case of Removing Alias just create Another Column in Rule File And Leave it Blank
Then in its Field Propety Check "Delete When Field is Empty". -
Not able to access the links to Essbase Console, Planning and Shared Servic

I am trying to access the links to Essbase Console, Planning and Shared Services but I get the following error message.

I tried to restart all the services on all the servers and also restarted the servers but it didn't work.

Members in Essbase outline but not Planning outline
We currently use Planning v3.5 and Esssbase v6.5.5 We want to add a member only to Essbase. It would not exist in Planning. <BR> <BR>Here are the specifics: <BR>We have a 3 generation outline and want to insert a member between generation 2 & 3 only in Essbase. The result would be that Essbase would have a 4 generation outline and Planning would have a 3 generation outline. We've tested this and done a refresh with no problem. Do you know of any problems with this approach? Also, we plan on upgrading to version 4.x in the near future. Okay two things if 00004TOT is going to be a parent to 00004DIST/TRANS in Essbase, then absolutely not.<BR><BR>If 00004TOT is going to be on the same level as 00004DIST/TRANS (in other words also a level 0 member) then in theory you could do it, but it would not be considered best practice or a supported solution. The problem is when you refresh planning you would run the risk of losing the member, having the database corupt, etc.. If this was somehting you really wanted to do, you would have to thinking it through and build a lot of preocedures around it, so that after every Planning refresh an Essbase dim build would kick in and add the memebr, then relaod your data, yada, yada, yada. You really don't want to go down this road. Either add the member in Planning or let the users do the math in Excel/Report writer.<BR><BR>Don't forget Planning does support alternate rollups with shared members. So you can create an alternate roll up with 00004DIST and 00004TRANS as shared members that roll up into 00004TOT. That would be the supported/best practice solution to your problem.<BR><BR>HTH

Filter and general access issues from planning to essbase
Hi all,
V 9.3.1 Planning
I am working on a planning system where the business owners would like to restrict the lock and sending of data via smartview. Basically, users are bypassing parts of planning and going directly to essbase rather than forms. They had individual user filters setup but they would like to move to groups. I am using the importsecurity utility to try and achieve this. However, the access granted and filters are producing the following behaviour
1)Group has essbase write access - if this is enabled there appears to be unrestricted access via smartview. Take it away and #NoAccess appears despite security being applied to certain members using the importsecurity utility. I have read that this can be a bit of a loose canon when granted and conflicts with filters.
2) Cannot create filters - I wish to remove all user filters from within planning. However, the importsecurity sl_clearall command doesn't clear them (as I thought it would but appear to be wrong). I cannot create any filters. An error appear saying 'Failed to create Security Filters for the following users: xxxx' Is it possible to delete the filters?
3) If I refresh the security filters I get errors saying 'the following filters could not be created' but they are in EAS (I deleted all filters before hand). I have run the updateusers utility which tidied up msad users but still errors are reported.
The objective is to restrict each group to be able to write to the permitted part of the application and read where necessary. The permissions in planning need to match essbase.
I would appreciate any help.

Shared members and dynamic calc
I am trying to replicate a new cube from current GL cube and wish to remove unused shared members if they have any impact on essbase.
2/3 of my accounts (dense) member is stored with the remainder being shared members. Shared members do not add to block size. But having so many of them, does it impact on calc scripts or retrievals or any other impacts?
Secondly, in accounts and divisions, we have four levels. except for level 0, the remaining levels are all dynamic calc. Division is sparse member. Its not advisable to have dynamic calc on dense dimension. What about sparse dimension like division? Will it be better to change level 2&3 to dynamic and change level 1 to store as well?
We have also been advised by our consultant to change accounts to sparse dimension considering the number of times we need to update outline for new members (stored and shared).

Having shared members in dense hierarchy will not have much of impact on Cube size or retrieval performance.
but its always advisable to avoid unnecessary hierarchies (shared or stored or dynamic).
Having top level dense members as dynamic lines is a good design but having sparse dynamic calc will impact retrieval performance.
its not at all advisable to make sparse members as dynamic calc but if needed we can make sparse members with very few children as dynamic calc (or dynamic calc & store). yet again its not advisable to have a dynamic calc children to a sparse stored parent as this will affect the batch calculation while aggregating parent sparse member.
And as suggested by your consultant it is feasible to make the dimension getting modified more often, as a sparse dimension as this will reduce the restructuring time (sparse restructure will take less time compared to dens restructure).
But that alone cannot be considered as factor as there are many other factors to be considered for making a dimension sparse.

Planning and Shared Services security disconnect.
Hi,
We have an intermittent problem. We are running 9.3.1 of Planning, Essbase, and Shared Services, etc. We have 6 planning applications on the same server. We use oracle as the database. The problem is at some point in time Planning stops getting updates made in Shared Services. When it happens you can go into the planning application, view the security on any object, and click "Add Access". The "Users and Groups" select box get's populated with "<None Available>". If you bounce the planning service and come back in the "Users and Groups" is populated as expected. It also dosen't affect all of the application or the same applications.
We have an admin group that makes security updates. Mainly just adding users to native groups. When things are working the changes/additions flow through to the planning tables. (HSP_USERSINGROUP,HSP_OBJECT). We gave this group a query to run that shows the access a specific user has in planning. If a user is added to a group in SS they then run the query to make sure the access is granted in planning. When the query doesn't bring back the information they think should be there we know we have the issue and start scheduling an outage to bounce planning.
Anyone else seen this behavior and is there another way to fix this besides bouncing planning?

Essbase Error log issue for Shared Members
I am loading Shared members for a custom dimension in Essbase.
Error log is getting created as below.

But that specific member is getting loaded.
I am loading only shared member in this load and all records are shown as getting rejected even though most of them are getting loaded.This is causing issues in finding out real rejects.

There seems to some changes with essbase.secJohn, you are the best. Are you sure you won't reconsider coming to ODTUG Kaleidoscope? I think there's a line of people waiting to buy you rounds. I am first in that line if you can stand my company. :)
So this is awesome, huge, marvellous, blah, blah, blah. No more assigning Server Access - no biggie. No more refreshes between Essbase and Shared Services - that's a big one.
Detlev, now I understand your trepidation regarding Planning -- what happens on refresh. Does Planning want to see a username in Essbase.sec or not? I am guessing yes but there's only one way to test it.
Per the docs, if PERSISTUSERATLOGIN is not used, there's no way in Essbase.log or app logs to track named connections. I wonder how (and maybe there is no way) this stuff will be analyzed in future.
Considering it's such a big change, it would sort of be nice if it was a little more fanfare than something buried deep in a readme of the non-current release of the product.
Perhaps it is coming with the next patch to 11.1.1.3 or maybe 11.2.
