  • Samsung Droid Charge Update

About 10 hours ago from now I received a message on my phone stating there was an update, I clicked OK/ACCEPT hoping it was the Gingerbread update.  It rebooted and started unpacking the files for the update, I fell asleep while it was doing it's magic. When I woke up today, I looked at my phone and it just kept rebooting over and over. I took the battery out and it put it back in, push the power button and it just reboots over and over. What the shell? Anyone have problem similar to mine with their device?

This upgrade, automatically downloaded, killed my Charge.  I get into a perpetual boot loop.  I read that doing a factory reset would help, and while I didn't want to lose all my apps, I did it.  It helped....for a few hours.  The phone freezes, then gets back into a perpetual booting loop (I am in one now) for who knows how long.  It might shape up and give you 12 hours of service, but then...it will go batpoop crazy.
This phone is an expensive business tool, and I am paying for voice and data and I depend on it working.  Right now, it's completely unreliable.  I resent being a guinea pig for this upgrade and I am suffering because a half-baked release was foisted on VZW customers.
I dumped my iPhone in July for the Charge and left AT&T for VZW at the same time.  For a few months I looked and felt like a smart guy but right now I look and feel like a huge idiot and sucker.
I've never seen such an ameteurish failure at the corporate/consumer level as this.  I'll call Verizon and they'll spend hours on the phone with me and then send me something refurbished that might or might not work.
Before the "upgrade" my phone worked flawlessly.  Sure, the startup was slow, the camera was janky, and the battery life was a joke...BUT...it never crashed.  Now?  I have an expensive brick.  THANKS (not).

  • Any Chance Droid Charge (Samsung SCH-I510) Will Get Another OS Update?

I received the Charge, free of Charge (pun intended!) a little over a year ago.  They were giving them away for a 2-yr contract renewal, and I bit!
I've had the Charge for approx. 16 months.  During that time, I have received 3 OTA updates (FP1, FP5 & FP8).  I have also noticed several problems mentioned in these forums already.  Most notably, the problem causing me the most grief is when multiple instances of the phone are created (launched by me, after no activity after each app instance).  All app instances appear simultaneously, and the poor person on the receiving end of the phone call hears me talking through several phone apps simultaneously ... echoing like mad.  Usually, a reboot clears this up.
I should mention that this problem doesn't happen nearly as much since FP8 was pushed.  Don't know if that was a coincidence or not.  But the problem does still happen occasionally.
I recently had another critical issue happen.  All of a sudden, I was getting force closes from many apps simultaneously, including system apps (com.android processes).  The phone became unusable.  Factory reset didn't resolve the problem.  After doing some research, I found that I could push stock software and re-partition the memory space again through ODIN.  I did this, and had no success at first because the phone thought I was using a non-stock battery, even though nothing had changed with the battery (stock battery received with the phone).  After pulling the battery, and re-installing, and pushing the stock software w/ re-partition (pushed the original EP4D flavor of OS), the phone operated as it did when I first received it.  Verizon pushed the "OTA" updates (FP1, FP5 & FP8), and my phone was back to good-as-new performance.  Actually, the phone is quite snappy now.
Needless to say, I'm still concerned about the Charge.  I am not up for contract renewal until March of 2014, so I'm just planning on doing a factory reset whenever I have these problems.
I recently read an article, stating that a bug was discovered in Feb 2013, which allows many devices made in the last 4 years (since "Donut" flavor of Android) to be susceptible to a bug taking advantage of "Master Key".  It claims that a dev could unknowingly push an apk to the Play store, which is infected with this issue.  It seems to be a stretch.  Here's the URL to the article:
    http://tinyurl.com/kj63ae8
I have followed the suggestions outlined in the article, and found that the Samsung droid charge is susceptible.  However, I've read a bit on XDA, and found that this is not really a huge problem, as it requires a user to install an infected apk, which doesn't happen all that often.  It's a flaw in the OS which bug-devs are not actively taking advantage of, it would seem.
Here's my question, I know the few Droid Charge owners out there are still a bit hopeful that it will get an update to the Jellybean OS.  Any chance this is possible?  I for one, would love this!
    Thanks for your consideration.

  • Droid Charge Signal Strength after FP5 Update

I updated my Droid Charge this morning to FP5 and I noticed that I have half the signal bars that I used to.  When I had FP1 and I was home connected to my Network Extender I had 4-5 bars lit up, now with FP5 I only have 2 bars.  Anyone else see less bars after the update?

I've also seen this problem since I updated my phone last week.
In my office I always got 5 bars with the occasional 4 bar signal. Now I regularly get 2 bars there with a 3 bar signal once in a while. I checked with other people around me who have Verizon and they are still getting 4-5 bars while I'm standing directly next to them with 2.
I've noticed that when I'm outside in areas where 4+ bars were typical that I'll now get 1-2 and 1 is very common.
I even purchased a network extender for my home almost two months ago because the reception in my house was poor (typically 1-2 bars). That worked perfectly until I updated my phone. Now, I can be 5 feet away from the extender and my phone will suddenly drop to 1 bar for a little while. That never happened before the phone update.
I've also noticed that even when my phone says I have full bars on my network extender I have issues talking on the phone. The call doesn't drop, but the person can't hear me any longer and eventually calls back to try again. This is another problem that never happened while on the network extender prior to this phone update.
I have seen at least one issue where I got a voicemail without my phone ever ringing or reporting a missed call. That was a frequent occurrence at my house when I had poor reception before I got the network extender.
I have noticed that my data connection has been worse and that it at least seems that I'm more frequently in 3G where I would have typically been in 4G. I even had an issue the other day where the phone claimed it was in 4G but it would take several attempts to load any web pages. At that time I was standing next to someone with an IPhone and browsing freely on 3G to the same sites.
Now that my phone is often showing 1-2 bars I'm back to a situation where my battery drains more quickly - battery life was a major problem before I got my network extender. It seems that now the situation is flipped so at home the network extender seems to be working enough for that so the battery doesn't get killed, but when I leave the house I have to charge it midday to keep things running into the evening.
What can be done here? Is there any way to back out of this update?

  • Droid Charge Software Update

I thought this was a routine update. I installed it. Many problems. No benefits. Why? I called cust no service and tech no support and they said there is nothing they can do. They can't fix anything and they can't undo what they called an upgrade. Are they kidding? I called for a credit on a new phone. The rep said no and would not let me speak with a supervisor. I then got a call asking me to rate the service from 0 to 10. It was very easy to press 0.

Since the posting, I received a third replacement for my phone. So far it is the best working phone out of all of them. It occasionally freezes up and I have to do a battery pull to get it stable again. I'm just quite unhappy because I didn't really even want the phone to begin with. Verizon called me and said they wanted to give me the early upgrade last year so I was like fine, but it has been a nightmare. Then I am approved for an early upgrade by two different managers from call centers and am told that they need to call me back to do the order, but I never get called back. When I call back, I get diverted and the new person on the phone ends up just wanting to send me a replacement Droid Charge. Then I finally get someone who will give me the upgrade, but then am surprised to find out that by upgrading, I will no longer be able to keep my current contract.
I have been a Verizon customer for one hell of a long time and have never had an issue until this past month, and am exhausted from having to make so many calls to Verizon. If nothing is resolved with my account by the end of my contract period, I am going to someone else.

  • No GPS on DROID Charge After Update (ED2)

I've had my DROID Charge for over two weeks now.  I won it in the DROID Landing scavenger hunt.  The GPS has been on par with other Samsung Galaxy S phones.  It's slow to lock, but it works well after it does.
After the device came out, Verizon pushed an update (ED2).  According to the documentation I've read, it only affected Samsung Media Hub.  I'm not really a Media Hub user, so I wasn't going to be affected by the 'downgrade' in functionality.
However, since the update, my GPS no longer locks.  I can be standing outside, clear skys, and I'm only ever shown at the cell tower level on Google Maps; A big blude circle, near my location.  It never hones in closer than that.
I've tried rebooting the phone, clearing the GPS Cache (with the GPS Status app http://j.mp/iijkwk), and redownloading the aGPS data, with the same app.
One time today, while walking to the coffee shop, my GPS locked on.  Other than that, nothing.
Has anyone else seen this issue?  Any more suggestions to fix, or at least put a band-aid on it?
    Thanks
    Breon

I understand your frustration because Vz Navigator is a great feature that many users depend on when traveling. Since you have cleared the Cache, rebooted, and you've downloaded the app again, I would try a few other steps. Ensure the Gps location is on and the Location Based services have the proper settings. You can use the directions below:
    GPS steps:
From the home screen, select Applications.
    Select Settings.
    Select Location & security.
    Select Standalone GPS services.
Enabled when a orange check mark is present.
If presented, review the disclaimer then select Agree.
     Location Based Services instructions:
Navigate to the http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/index.html website, enter the 10-digit mobile number and password then click Sign In.
To register, click Register then follow the step-by-step instructions.
    Click My Service > Navigator.
    Click Manage Online.
Click Settings (upper-right corner, above the map).
Click Privacy Settings (under End User License and Privacy Settings).
Select a privacy setting then click Save.
    Click OK.

  • Update: VZW shipped me a brand-new Samsung Droid Charge in retail box

The VZW store that i went to was very nice and knew immediately what to do.  I was in
and out within minutes. The phone arrived via FedEX and it was a BRAND NEW phone
in retail box.   Again, this may vary.... others on this forum have reported getting
certified like-new phones.     I had to go back to the store because VZW forgot to include
the 4G SIM card which is required for 4G phones.   The manager gave me a SIM card
and activated it for me.   She said that most of the customers who exchanged Fascinate
for the Droid Charge have been getting new phones in the last few weeks.... the reason
is that VZW doesn't have that many pre-owned Droid Charge phones. That's not surprising
because the Droid Charge has been out only a couple of months.
VZW only guarantees that you will get a cerfitied like-new replacement Samsung Droid Charge.
It should be as good as new. If not, VZW should have no problem exchanging it for another
until you're happy.   I personally would not have minded if they sent me a like-new unit.
Makes no real difference to me.  IMHO, getting a brand-new phone in retail box was just a
    just a nice bonus.
My Droid Charge has been working great and I am very grateful for all the information that
other VZW customers and employees have posted on this forum.

    OMGoodness!!!
The VZW rep in my local store did the exact same thing!  I just got my phone today (spanking brand new, in a retail box) - alas, minus the sim card, which won't be delivered until tomorrow...
I think I'll go into the store, too - mainly because they want the Fascinate returned w/in five days.  I need time to transfer everything over & make sure I don't miss anything.  It's going to be a super-charged weekend & I really need to get this done tonight & play w/it.
    Hopefully, they'll give me one.

  • If I'm in Europe, can I use Skype on Droid Charge(via Wi-Fi) to call US phone numbers?

If I'm in Europe, can I use Skype on Droid Charge(via Wi-Fi) to call US phone numbers?
Obviously there's no voice or data roaming for Verizon 3G/4G/CDMA phones in Europe.... (or am I wrong?)
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello WCMack,
That was a great explanation on the situation. Just to confirm, Europe uses GSM for their wireless network. There are third party apps that will allow you to make calls via wi-fi on a wi-fi enabled device. This is largely due if wi-fi is available and if it's free.
From my experience, I was able to make wi-fi calls on my Iphone 4 in Greece without any problems last month. Since we don't own any towers in Europe, the service is hit or miss. Feel free to update us when you get back.
    Enjoy your trip!...

  • Need help with Droid Charge camera shuting off phone

We have two droid charge phones that we got in April on Amazon.  We are trying to troubleshoot with Samsung and getting not much help.  Phone dies quickly at times, but not other times.  It consistently shuts off when taking pictures, though, on both phones.  It is clear to us that the phone has a problem because we have two.  I've seen two work-arounds.  One is getting a bigger battery that requires a new larger phone back.  The other is to put the phone in Airplane Mode.  Apparently, this problem is due to a "power load" issue.  So, the phones are inherently defective.
We like the phones and at brief times we have been fooled into thinking they are working fine... because once in a while the camera works fine. We haven't had any replacement phones because it seems that so many have this issue and therefore, figured what is the point.  We would like to know if other Droid Charge cameras don't have this issue because we expect to be able to use the camera.  We have 3 little boys and we already have lost pictures from the last day of school because we counted on this phone.  Sounds like a small problem until you look at it that way.
Really wish Amazon, Verizon or Samsung could get us a good solution to a seemingly nice phone.

Nolpost and smsmoot, I’m sorry to hear of the issues you are having with the phone shutting off when using the camera. This is no fun! I use my camera often and would hate for it to reboot my phone every time I use it. I can only imagine how frustrating that must be. But don’t worry guys because I’m here to help!
How long have you guys had this issue? Does it happen every time you use the camera? Did you notice this started after the software update? If so, have you performed a hard reset http://bit.ly/w21WpW since the update?
If you have already performed a hard reset and are still experiencing this issue, please send me a DM with your name and mobile number so I can access your account and further assist you.
I look forward to hear from you guys.

  • Possible Samsung Droid Charge problems.

I saw this post on another Droid Charge phone forum...it makes you wonder "what's up."
Verizon has told me that the Samsung Charge has been quarantined due to a software update. I was curious as to any remote estimate of when it may be available to purchase again. Does anyone know? Also, does anyone know if this is a result of Samsung being sued by iPhone for similar menus? Any help would be appreciated. I'm trying to decide which phone to purchase, and I had settled on the Charge but if it's going to be months before it is re released then I cannot wait that long unfortunately.
You can see the post for yourself here along with any further comments.

Verizon just gets more and more frustrating with lack of proper information. I guess the question still is....is it quarantined or not? Can't ask Verizon cause you will get 5 different answers from 5 diferent reps.

  • Going deaf thanks to my Droid Charge screeching...

Have had my charge for about 4 months now, and off and on get the screeching reported by many Droid Charge owners.  At first, assumed it was a new kind of "digital static" associated with the 4G, but have come to find it is far from normal compared to other 4G phones.
Verizon refuses to fix, replace and continues to have me "wipe the phone"...
Just wanted to see how many other Charge owners were experiencing this deafening screeching sound to gather names for the class action lawsuit when we all go deaf from it.
    S
    For VZW:
    Hardware version: i510.06
    Model# SCH-I510
Firmware version: 2.3.6 (no updates available)
    Kernal Version: 2.6.35.7-FPI
    Build # SCH-I510.FPI

I have had the same issue since I bought the phone. My mom has the same phone and the same issues. We can never complete a phone call with each other! Either there is a horrible screeching sound, or one of us can no longer hear or understand the other due to distortion. I've contacted Verizon in store and by phone and they are absolutely no help. They used to have the best customer service and the ability to upgrade when a phone was a piece of crap. The people are perfectly pleasant, but Verizon has not provided the employees with an actual solution. Just a list of "cure-alls" that fix nothing. I may have to look elsewhere next time I get a phone since I have had this phone for over a year and the problem is not resolved. Unfortunate, since I have been with Verizon since 1999.
I'm about ready to chuck my phone out of a window!

  • Droid Charge ever getting new OS?

I'd love to hear from Verizon or Samsung with a definite answer on this, but will the Droid Charge ever get ICS? Or for that matter Jellybean? I can't help but feel like this device was seemingly abandoned shortly after launch. Outside of the update to Gingerbread and the recent bug fix, we're now 2 full Android releases behind, while even the Nexus S has even been updated to Jellybean (the Nexus S being six months older than the Charge).

Ice Cream sandwich does not require 1GB of RAM:
    "256MB RAM or More
    and also decent GPU
Hardware-accelerated 2D drawing might be needed, 2D acceleration depends on your phone GPU not the CPU so, there’s no problem if your smartphone still powered with ARMv6."
    Source 1, Source 2
Also you can run Jelly Bean on the Original Droid which has worse specs than the Droid Charge. Source
Chances of the Droid Charge seeing any sort of update to the newer versions are highly unlikely. Reason being the Droid Charge was already neutered when it launched. It has been forgotten by Verizon and Samsung. The only way you will see an update is not allowed to be discussed on this forum, but those chances are diminishing since most of the people that were working on it have left for greener pastures.

  • How to move apps to sd card on droid charge?

i need to know how to move apps on my droid charge to my sd card. im running out of memroy on my phone quickly!
    thanks

i did get the 2.3 update and i figured it would have it bc my bro's droid x2 has it and stuff. but im looking around and the only option i have is to move my apps to usb something (which is stupid).
im going to try something but i dont think it will work.

  • Did VZW ever say that Gingerbread will be coming to the Droid Charge?

no... I'm not one of those people who complain that Verizon and/or Samsung is obligated to provide Gingerbread update.
I do not think they are obligated.
However....    did VZW ever say that Gingerbread will be coming to the Droid Charge?  (in TV commercials, print ads,
    in-store ads, etc)

CUrrent leak is __1h. Current Beta is 1m. NExt beta is 3C1B and is last planned stages\, the beta leaks are now 4 behind, streamign works, new customizable UI works. Inhanced vid cap features work. More stable network protocols work, newer flash version works. Much better battery manager, vattery life extendded even with fancy weather report features and animations.
Please no Verizon bull crap preloaded.....
There is a reason you can't access certain apps in market palce durign testing, they are blocked. THE leaks maintain the blocks, the last beta testers builds have more access and that included with aps needign compatibility testing.
    Thanks for that information.
Does the Gingerbread update for Samsung Droid Charge come with a spell-checker?

  • What can I use my Droid Charge for, after I upgrade to the new Samsung Galaxy S2 for VZW on Sept 8?

what can I use my Droid Charge for, after I upgrade to the new Samsung Galaxy S2 for Verizon on September 8?
I guess it can run fine on Wi-Fi and become a media player.... or is there a market for 1-month-old Droid Charge phones?
How much trade-in value can I get from VZW or BestBuy or Amazon?
    Thanks!
