Drop frame crash during camera import
Is there a fix for DROP frames when importing from camera? Is it a camera issue, Sony V1U? Up to now it's never happened and it's been three months.
It's a bug in FCP X. Try capturing to an Archive.

-Update software
I tried to rebuild the iPhoto library but was unable to.
I am running a MacBook Pro (OSX Lion 10.7.2, 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB RAM)
Does anyone have any input for how I can fix this problem?

Using an imac with 10.7.2 and iphoto 9.2 and this is the first time since I tried to import pics from the iphone since I upgraded to 10.7.2 and iphoto 9.2.
Cannot import from HDD or camera SD card either. -
"Dropped Frames Detected During Last Capture attempt."
After capturing from DV tape to FCE I get this message;
"Dropped Frames Detected During Last Capture attempt."
What is causing this, and is there anything I can do to fix it?It is an old DV tape and recorder that I am backing up to the hard drive, and the only other fire wire device is the external drive that I use for a scratch disc. I am using a pass thru fire wire port on the external drive. I successfully ingested 14 other older DV tapes without this message, so it could be a bad tape.
I did sample the video in different areas and it appears OK so far. -
Since 8.1 update, computer crashes during CD import
Hello,
This is driving me crazy... Ever since updating to the latest version of iTunes, my computer crashes when I try to import music from CDs. It begins the ripping process normally, but then by the second or third song, everything goes blank and the machine tries to restart. When I try to run iTunes diagnostics on the CD drive, it does the same thing, so I can't even get a report on the problem. I have been able to import one or two discs seemingly successfully, but then they skip insanely on playback.
I have tried completely removing iTunes / Quicktime / etc. from my machine and reinstalling everything. No luck. I have tried updating my CD drive firmware. Nothing. I tried removing other programs that might possibly be conflicting with iTunes (Roxio, etc.). Same problem. I even edited my registry as per Apple Support instructions for a similar problem. Nada.
I know iTunes 8.1 is driving a lot of Windows users nuts, but I can't find a fix for this specific problem anywhwere. Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated.
Thanks.I haven't tried burning any CDs since I installed iTunes 8.1; however, I have been importing them. My problem is that my drive speed when importing has dropped from 20-24x down to 6-10x.
I appreciate the suggestion about saving as mp3s then importing, but why should I have to do an extra step because Apple messed up the new version?
I hope this gets resolved quickly. I was planning to finally upgrade my iPod to a new model, but if this is the hassle to import CD music and burn CDs, the Zune is looking better. -
Crash during CD import - please help
When trying to import (Apple lossless in my case) iTunes crashes after a few songs quite randomly. This happens to all CDs I try. What a mess and how frustrating....
Does anybody have an idea, what could be the problem?

Using cs3. Clips dropping frames. When I import m2t video from my focus inhancements fs-4hd
The 2 gb. limit creates several clips and the clips don't join together correctly. the end of each clip is missing 4 frames of audio and 1 frame of video. This makes it impossible to sync to video tracks together. Am I alone with this problem? Would Cs5 correct it?
Yes exactly. Using the original files to edit with can make your editing process verrryy slow especially on a laptop.
Forget about H.264 for editing- a good codec for other purposes but not for editing in Final Cut.
Don't worry about losing image quality when you import and transcode into ProRes - you aren't 'sacrificing' image quality, you're only converting (transcoding) into this codec to edit with-- to make editing faster and more efficient on your CPU... This is what he means by that. The original files will still be there - don't worry they won't be slaughtered
ProRes is the most FCP friendly codec for editing - it's an Apple codec that gives you high playback quality without using a ton of CPU, and was pretty much designed for FCP. You should find that transcoding your material into this codec will eliminate the sluggishness you've described.
FCPX gives you the option for ProRes optimized or ProRes proxy when you import your media - both are good for your purposes, but proxy is probably the best for you since you are on a laptop . Fastest to edit with, with slightly less image quality (again - only while editing!)
Then, whenever you're done editing and are ready to export back into high quality - just go into your preferences menu and click Original/optimized media and it will switch over for you. You can then export in high quality.
FCPX as much as I hate it - makes the transcoding procress very easy.

OSX crashing during imovie import.
I have a MACBOOK OSX bersion 10.5.7 2 GHz processor and 2GB memory.
Imovie is version 8.0.3
The computer is over a month old and I have completed a movie project last week.
Now, as I try to import video for a new project (other project has been deleted), *Mac OSX* crashes. It happened 3 times in less than 10 minutes.
Is anyone familiar with this happening and/or suggestions for repair?

Dropped Frames/Quicktime Import
I keep getting dropped frame messages during playback of quicktime footage I imported and am re-cutting. Why?
+Is there a way to transfer the files from the MBP to my MacPro without doing another camera to computer baby sitting job? Maybe via iDisk?+
Yes, this is quite easy, but don't do it via iDisk.
Option 1 - copy the clip files from the MBP to one of your firewire drives. Then move the firewire drive to your MacPro and copy the clips to your Capture Scratch folder.
Option 2 - Shut down your MacPro and then start it up in *target disk mode* (hold down the "T" key while it starts up - eventually you will get a FireWire icon on the MacPro's screen - that tells you it's in target disk mode).
Then Connect your MBP to your MacPro via a firewire cable. Copy the clips directly to the Capture Scratch folder on your MacPro. When you're done copying, on your MBP unmount the drive icon that represents your MacPro. Shut down both machines. Disconnect the firewire cable between them.

Copy speed via FW400 is about 1GB per minute; via FW800 is about 2GB per minute. There is no compression involved - you are merely copying the files from one location to another.
One more thing - after you copy the clips to your MacPro, shut down your MacPro and restart it. Then open one of the clip files in QuickTime (on your MacPro). If you get an error message that says you are not allowed to open the clip because you don't have adequate privileges, you will need to change the ownership of the clips (since you captured them on another Mac under a different username, that user 'owns' the files). If that happens, and you need help with it, let us know, we can tell you how to change the ownership. -
IMovie '11 crashing during import
I'm a tech in a school district and am having a LOT of issues with iLife '11. I'm not sure if it's from the workflow we used to upgrade to '11 or if it is the application.
On several teacher computers, they tell me iMovie has disappeared. Sure enough, it is no longer in their Applications folder. So I check iPhoto and it is working just fine. I can't figure out how I could install iLife and only iMovie is missing from the suite.
So I reinstall iLife (from a disk stored on our shared folder on the main server). Once I do that, iPhoto breaks! So I reinstall iLife again, and all seems to be going ok, except a teacher has now told me that iMovie is crashing during an import from her video camera. It starts importing and looks good, but then crashes after several minutes of importing.
Will continue to monitor for new updates, but hope if someone has a good answer, they will share. Is there a file that is corrupt that is not getting written over during the reinstall?

Problems working with non drop and drop frame DVCPRO HD material in project
I am having playback problems with my non drop frame HDV material. It stutters.
All of our projects up to this point have been shot in drop frame. During our last shoot however the Bcam was recorded in non drop. I loaded both the non drop bcam tapes as non drop and the drop frame Acam tapes as drop. All of the drop frame Acam material plays back fine in the source viewer and the timeline. The non drop Bcam material seems to randomly stutter in the source viewer, or causes the system to serve a "dropped frames warning" in the timeline.
Is there a bug with fcp 5.1.2 about mixing non drop and drop frame material in a project. Or is this not possible? They are the same frame rate.
I have exported the non drop clips in a drop frame timeline and re-imported them as drop frame clips - thus correcting the problem. Is this the best solution?
All of the material was loaded thru a kona card as 1080i60 DVCPROHD 29.97
I had no problems capturing the material as long as I used the corrrect firewire setting (ndf vs df).
Anyone have a problem like this? I would greatly appreciate a response.

The camera can record 60i, and 30F:
"HDV 1080, 50i/60i/30F/25F Recording and Playback capable"
Look at the clips...look at their frame rates. What do they say? Is one 59.94? Is the other 29.97?
You would never need to render if you mixed NDF and DF footage. The footage runs at the same speed, on the TC numbers are different. But, you would need to render if your footage had different frame rates. LOOK AT THE CLIPS.

Dropped Frames -- Releted to Capture?
I was quickly working on a project for old friends, which I have now easily been able to finish to satisfaction, but got some dropped frames warnings during the process, which it did not hurt to ignore. Now I want to analyze why this happened?
I had some previously footage on DV tape that had been copied from VHS, via VCR to camcorder in VTR mode -- no problem with these in FCP, utilizing In/Out timecodes. However I had to quickly review a lot more old VHS tapes, and chose to use my Canopus ADCV 110 to allow for rapid review and selective capture. Furthermore, it seemed much easier to do this in iMovie HD, capture selectively, and then export as QT dv, and import into FCP. All this seemed to work, and I could edit. But exclusive to those clips captured in iMovie and exported, I started to get this warning about dropped frames.
Was this caused by the path of capture/export directly, or did the fact that I exported to the same scratch disk drive as those clips captured directly in FCP matter? Although using my new Mac Pro, I was still using my LaCie FW 800 disk as capture scratch. Is it the lack of timecodes on those assets captured via the Canopus, and should I expect the same issues if I capture via the Canopus, but in FCP? Part of the reason I used iMovie to capture, was I couldn't figure out how to monitor the sound from the VCR, which had no headphone jack, if reviewing via the Canopus and FCP.
I love the Canopus, but have not made extensive use of it in this situation. However, I believe it actually gave better quality than "remastering" to DV tape, first, btw.

Corrupt media causing dropped frames? FCP shuts down without warning.

I have a project that was working fine, then one day we started getting numerous dropped frame warnings during playback on the timeline (specifically during sequences that have multiclips); then two days later, playback causes the entire project to freeze and FCP shuts down.
We are on 17" MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 667
Mac OS X 10.4.9
External drive: Western Digital 1 TB, My Book Pro Edition, FW 800, 7200rmp, 650GB used
FCP 5.1.4, DV-NTSC project, source media captured from DVCam
I have tried all the normal adjustments for dropped frames issues including boosting the ram allocated to FCP, closing additional sequences and applications, hard drive is formatted OS X Extended, etc. Multiclip squences have only 2 video/audio streams at a time, so I can't imagine that its bottle necking here.
One thing to note is that the second external drive, which has duplicates of all the same media and copy of the most recent project is working fine. The only difference is that the problem drive also has media that was ripped from DVDs using Mac The Ripper, and then compressed using MPeg Streamclip into .dv (then changed to .mov before importing into FCP). We are using the DVD material as scratch until we can obtain the original footage as we get closer to going online. We are in the process of obtaining permissions from directors/distributors/studios, but this obviously takes time.
DVD material is totaling close to 55GB. Also, even though the clips are .mov, we are still getting a red bar and having to render the media. Audio is at 48hz so no problem there. Not sure why it still requires us to render.
Is it possible that the project is somehow corrupt? Is all the rendered material too taxing for FCP? Am I handling this extra footage inefficiently?

You're having problems playing back the media from one drive but NOT the other? Sounds like your drive might be failing. Try running Diskwarrior (to repair any possible directory structure problems) and techtoolpro (to see if there's any physical problem).
I have had problems with multiple firewire drives from different manufacturers connected at the same time. Try disconnecting everything BUT the problem drive.
You shouldn't need to do any rendering if the clip settings exactly match the sequence settings. Try this: select one clip, control click and choose make multiclip sequence. Is there a red bar in the sequence? If not, your clip settings to not match your sequence settings in the problem sequence.

I have a few clips with some dropped frames that I need to sync for multicam, but
I cannot recapture the footage.
The only thing I can do is export a 'repaired clip' and sync that.
I have marked the 'long frames'
Can anybody tell me how to 'repair' the clips so that when I export the 'repaired' clip and reimport them, they will stay in sync? (hope i've made sense)I just finished a multicam project which had a ton of dropped frames over 8 cameras, and I didn't set it to start a new clip on dropped frames. It was a live concert.
What I did was, once I got the audio mix from the band, I laid it out on the timeline and locked those tracks. Then I dropped the first camera onto it, synced it up at the beginning, and hit play. When I saw a dropped frame, I sliced the video track and slid it down the timeline until the remaining footage was in sync. I inserted color bars instead of the slugs Randy recommended. That way it's easier to see in the multiclip 9-up view when a dropped frame area comes up, and I knew not to use that angle. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Once I went all the way through an angle, I would export a new self-contained QT movie of that angle and import it into the project. Then I'd duplicate that sequence, remove the video, and bring in the next camera. Shampoo rinse repeat.
Once I had all the angles done, I created a mutliclip with all my new clips. By locking the audio and duplicating those clips, each new QT movie had the same timecode, and I was able to sync by timecode, instead of in point on my multiclip. -
FCP Capture Dropped frames with advanced pulldown
Ok so here's my problem, I have Final Cut studio with FCP 4.5 and I'm trying to import 24p advanced pulldown media from my tapes, and getting a dropped frames warning that ends import; but after trying both cameras (the one the footage was shot with and a second one) and different tapes with normal footage and 24P advanced I still get the same error message. Then I went and replaced the firewire cable with no luck, and I just went and got a PCI firewire card qualified for video import same dropped frames.
Now before I put in the PCI card I clean installed FCP studio with no luck, I also went through and triple checked every setting in FCP for any problems; and I'm wondering if it might mean that either, I need to replace the media drive I'm importing to or if I need more then my 1GB of RAM?I too am having the exact same problem with 4.5 (although no advanced pull down) and 24p. Last week I was importing fine, this week, dropped frames right and left using batch capture after logging my clips.
I'm using a dual 2.0ghz G5 with 3.5gb of RAM, 10.4.9, booting off a 250gb internal (48gb free) disk but using a G-Tech 500gb firewire 800 external firewire drive for scratch(400gb free). Media is miniDV, tape deck is Sony GVD1000 and I've tried my DVX100b for playback as a test. I've gone thru the FCP checklist and used Disk Utility and Disk Warrior (no problems there). I've tried different tapes (including ones that were successfully captured last week).
I'm suspecting that some recent download of QTime, OSX, or iTunes is at fault. Anyone else suspect the same? -
Different Audio rates & audio formats = drop frames?
I´m getting a lot of drop frame errors during playback in the time line.
Now that I want to print my movie to tape the drop frames of course disturb this process, making it impossible.
I noticed that I have material with different audio rates and audio formats. Could this cause it and how do I make a conversion so that all of my audio is the same rate & format.
Audio captured with my camcorder is: 48KHz, 16-bit integer.
CD music in time line is: 44.1KHz, 16-bit integer.
Timeline is: 48KHz, 32-bit floating point
(The things that FCP suggests to do when drop frames occur; turning RT to Safe, buying a faster computer etc. havn´t helped, so the problem must be somewhere else)You could try exporting your sequence as a self contained QuickTime Movie. This would give you one file with one set of rates and formats. Be sure to set up the export for 48Khz 16 bit. Once that's done, import the file back to your project, place it in a new sequence and try printing that to tape.
If you're just concerned with getting smooth playback in the timeline you could also try doing an audio mixdown. This is a good thing to do before printing to tape as well.
