DTD Question

I have an XML docuemnt structured like this:
<foo>
<goo />
<hoo />
<goo />
</foo>
where goo and hoo elements can appear in any order. I need to do DTD validation on this XML Document.
I was using
<!ELEMENT foo (goo*, hoo*)>
but the parser complained that the document did not follow the validation guidline (goo*, hoo*) which is understandable beause they have to appear in that order.
Does anyone know how I can use the validation without specifing an order?
I was thinking aout useing
<!ELEMENT foo (ANY)>
but that is dangerous, becuase I have other elements defined in my DTD file that sould not belong in foo.

That did not work, validation still requires the order of the elements be preserved.
<goo> then <hoo>, cannot have <hoo> then <goo>
Anybody?

• DTD Element Definition Question.

Is it possible to define an ELEMENT in a DTD that limits what values that can be entered in the ELEMENTs text? For example, I want to limit what can be put in the ELEMENT Hazard to the text values of "Yes" or "No" and nothing else can be entered.
1) <!ELEMENT Hazard ('Yes' | 'No') >
or
2) <!ELEMENT Hazard (Yes | No) >
In example 2, don't 'Yes' and 'No' need to be elements themselves? And if so, then this is not what I want. I need to limit the Hazard tags text value to only be "Yes" or a "No":
<Hazard>Yes</Hazard>
or
<Hazard>No</Hazard>
No other text values can be entered.
Any help would be appreciated!

To do what you want you need to use an empty element and an attribute which you can enumerate. Ex: <Hazard state="YES"/>
<!ELEMENT Hazard EMPTY>
<!ATTLIST Hazard
STATE ( YES | NO )>

• Re: Steve's book - PLSQL - Validation/DTD/Parser questions

1)How much of the xpath plsql validation example in Steve's book (page 138 onwards) could (or should) be done by parsing with the appropriate DTD instead?
2)If we receive an input XML doc that is missing the DTD line (reference to our published DTD) can we still enforce parsing with our DTD (without having to modify the input doc)?
3)Can the plsql XML parser return all parse errors in one go (cf command line oraxml v filename)

We don't support file references ("cv1_0.dtd"). Only url type references
are supported, of the form:
@
Note that the url should be accessible to the world without the need to authenticate.
you could put your dtd in the "public" area in your iFS system.

• Basic XML question: Purpose of a DTD?

What does a DTD do? And do I need one? I've been using an XML config file for my app, but now that I'm looking for a simple XML editor, I can't just open my .xml file in the editor and GO. I need to specify some kind of DTD as well, so I can't even edit my file as I do in Forte.
Thanks

I read the SUN tutorials on using the DOM parser. I chose to use the DOM parser instead of the SAX parser, because it is simple to load a file and let the API parse the xml file from you. Then all you need to do is call the various methods that are provided to access parts of your XML file.
For example, here is the function I use to load my config file, which I grabbed from the examples in the SUN XML tutorial. See part III of:
http://java.sun.com/xml/jaxp/dist/1.1/docs/tutorial/index.html
public boolean loadFile(String filename) {
// Get an instance of a DocumentBuilderFactor
DocumentBuilderFactory factory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
try {
// Have the factory create a document builder
DocumentBuilder builder = factory.newDocumentBuilder();
// Builder parses the XML file and save it into a document object.
xmlFile = builder.parse( filename );
return true;
catch (SAXException sxe) {
// Error generated during parsing.
Exception x = sxe;
if (sxe.getException() != null) x = sxe.getException();
x.printStackTrace();
return false;
catch (ParserConfigurationException pce) {
// Parser with specified options can't be built.
pce.printStackTrace();
catch (IOException ioe) {
// I/O error
System.out.println("XMLEasyReader: Error opening the config file : " + filename);
ioe.printStackTrace();
return false;
}

• Question about Spry Collapsible Panel

Hey guys my question is that I have a PSD sliced and imported into Dreamweaver and I was wondering if it was possible to have a Spry Collapsible Panel drop down from a button I designed in Photoshop and brought into dreamweaver? Basically I want a content area to drop down when that button is clicked and I figured a Spry Collapsible Panel might be able to accomplish that. I hope I'm explaining this clearly enough, I'm not very experienced with Dreamweaver. Thanks!

Definitely possible.
You should first import the image into DW.
Insert > Spry > Spry Collapsible Panel
It'll insert a demo panel.
You'll then have to move your image into the default first div under spry collapsible as follows:

Content

You'll basically be removing 'TAB' from here to replace it with your img src tag.
Your HTML should look like this:

Collapsible Test

Content

Do note that you'll have to copy the supporting spry files to your server for this to work. By default, DW will place them into your project folder once you insert the spry collapsible panel.

• Splash page with animated gif only question

Hello all:
I have a splash page (index.html) that is designed using an animated gif created in photoshop. The rest of my site is Css/XHTML, but has some divs containing animated gifs. I have two questions;
1: By using only the animated gif on the splash page, am I limiting or hindering my SEO (google, microsoft, yahoo) ranking opportunities as there is no "content" on the page that the spiders/bots can see? I went ahead and included some "content" but hid it by coloring the type the same as the background color hoping that might do something, but obviously I'm a SEO newbie so any suggestions are more than welcomed. I will include the code at the end of this post, and my site is: http://reynolds-marketing.com.
2. Is there a way to pre-load the animated gifs on my pages so that they play more smoothly and efficiently?
TIA for any of your help. Murman

My guess is yes, but that is just my opinion. I believe the text/background same color idea was really in vogue back in the late 90's and we all heard that it was the kiss of death for SEO that the SE's hated them so much you got de-listed, not sure if that is a fact or not.
My bigger concern would be how many people you are losing by making them wait to get to where they want to go. I have told many a client that in some sense, the interent is too big, you have too much competition and people have thin patience for things like splash pages. The ooo and aaa effect of animated gifs is long dead...again, in my opinion.
I dont know the answer to your load question...

• Creating a Survey - Novice Javascript Question

Hello,
I am extrememely new to Javascript. I have been doing some research online and copy/pasting code to create the results I need. I am trying to create an online survey in Dreamweaver in which users select buttons to answer questions and then the total results appear at the bottom of the survey. So far this is what I have:
http://sicolaconsulting.com/SurveyTest4.php
The problem I have with this is that on each line, a user can select more than one box. I don't want this so I thought radio buttons would be better. I then came up with this:
http://sicolaconsulting.com/SurveyTest3.php
The problem with this is that with the function I am using, I can only get it to display the value of the first line. I need it to calculate the sum of all the lines.
Can you help me revise the script I have to get my desired result.
Here is my code for the first page, followed by the code for the second page. THANK YOU!

Hi Nancy,
I've been away from this for a while and have picked it back up. I tried your suggested code and I'm having problems getting it to work. I created a file using the code you supplied for the survey here:
view-source:http://www.littlechisel.com/clients/GreenSurvey/GreenSurvey.html
It doesn't work so I know I'm missing something. If you could advise me on this, it would be great. Thanks! Here is the code as I have it:

• Creating a Survey - Novice Question

Hello,
I am extrememely new to Javascript. I have been doing some research online and copy/pasting code to create the results I need. I am trying to create an online survey in which users select buttons to answer questions and then the total results appear at the bottom of the survey.
THANK YOU!

• Questions on logging in JDK 1.4

Hi,
This is my second try at getting some help on these questions. I thought I would try posting into the advanced language topics forum since I didn't get any response in the Java topics forum. I could really use some help on these two questions...
I'm using the following code to test the new logging faciliites of
SDK 1.4. I have two questions I would like to resolve.
1) Why is this coming out in XML format, and how to I change it so
it comes out in text format.
2) How can I format the log to format a single log record into a
single line, with the following fields (I want to make the log
sortable by time and date).
"date" "time" "class" "method" "thread" "message"
and will look something like this
2002-03-20 13:21:09 <SimpleLogExample:main:10> log message #4
2002-03-20 13:21:09 <SimpleLogExample:main:10> log message #5
2002-03-20 13:21:09 <SimpleLogExample:main:10> log message #6
HERE IS THE ACTUAL (PARTIAL) OUTPUT FROM THE PROGRAM

<log>

<thread>10</thread>
<message>log message #4</message>
</record>
</log>

• Questions on HTML5 Output in FrameMaker 12

I have a couple questions about the HTML5 Output:
1. I have images that are not appearing in the output (they are in the source FM file, but not in the HTML5 output). What am I doing wrong?
2. Is there a way to disable the glossary function so that it doesn't appear as an option in the HTML5 output?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

1. Are all of the images in anchored frames? Have you edited any of the settings under Style mapping > Image?
2. Currently, AFAIK, this is hardwired. You could try spelunking in a saved settings.sts file (it's just a zip container) to see if this can be turned off there [if you're quite familiar with XML, DTD's (.slp file), HTML and javascript],

• Questions on in-memory with disk based overflow cache.

Hi, support
I want to create a cache which have two tiers, one is size limited local cache and the other uses a disk as a storage. As you said if the local cache is full, the other data will be moved to external cache (on disk). Does it mean the other data will be saved in a temp file? If so, could you let me know where is temp file? The config file is attached.
Btw, although I used on disk cache as a external cache, I got Exception in thread "main" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space also when I put lots of data into the cache.
Thanks a lot.

Hi, Jon
Thanks for your help.
I will use an unconfigured LH file manager(I mean the file path and name will not be specified.).
Currently, find the temp file will be created in C:\Documents and Settings\$user_name\Local Settings\Temp in windows.
I have two questions on temp file.
1) Does tangosol supply a mechanism to maintain the temp files?
2) In solaris, which place will the temp file be created in?
Thanks,

• Some questions on whitespace and &

Dear all,
I have some questions on whitespace and & that need you kind help:
1. Except /n /t /r and space, is there any characters that are whiteSpace characters?
2. When parsing XML document, when the ignorableWhitespace() method is called? Will it be called from characters() ?
e.g. Where the white space after is called, and where is the white space between test1 and test 2 indied is called?

test1 test2
3. When the & should be escaped in a well-formed (or validated) XML file by replacing &?
It should be excaped in any element content, such as test1 & test2< /b> - except for section?
It should NOT always be used in attributes? e.g. - has to do escaped by entity & - am I right?
Thanks!
Thanks

Thanks DrClap.

2. When parsing XML document, when the
ignorableWhitespace() method is called? Will it be
called from characters() ?It will be called when the document has a DTD and the
parser is a validating one that is actually
validating, when the parser sees whitespace that is
not part of a DTD element. It will not be called from
characters() because that is a method that you write.I wrote a contentHandler and using Xerces parser to parse an XML document. When I set validating feature to false, I found that for:

test1 test2The white space between and (including newline) is actually called from characters(), not in ignorableWhitespace(). So does this mean that if validating - white space is always called from ignorableWhitespace(), and if not validating, if it is always called from characters()?
>
3. When the & should be escaped in a well-formed(or
validated) XML file by replacing &? The XML Recommendation says "The ampersand character
(&) and the left angle bracket (<) may appear
in their literal form only when used as markup
delimiters, or within a comment, a processing
instruction, or a CDATA section. If they are needed
elsewhere, they must be escaped using either numeric
character references or the strings "&" and
"<" respectively."So in this sense, both & in test1 & test2< /b> and is illegal unless replacing them by & - right? What does the markup delimiters mena in above XML Recommendation ? Example?
Thanks!

by now I have way too many java sdks installed...

Right now..
JAVA_HOME = C:\j2sdkee1.4
CATALINA_HOME = C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Tomcat 4.1
I have no idea what's going on here not having much experience in settting up web servers or java SDKs. But in order to learn the stuff I have planned to I need teh following to get up and running on Win2K.. any help is greatly appreciated.
Java JDK 1.4.
Tomcat servlet\JSP engine 4.0.1.
MySQL database 3.23.46
If I stick a standard html page in the tomcat root it will show just fine.. so I suspect the whole Java thing is buggin for some reason.

I ended up uninstalling every java this and that.. and tomcat.
Then installing only the j2sdk1.4.0_03 SDK.
Then set up JAVA_HOME for all users and modified the path with full path to the bin (c:\j2sdk1.4.0_03\bin)
Lastly I reinstalled tomcat and, voila, everything was working.
It can be quite maddening when you THINK you did everything by the boook and something doesn't work. When you replied and confirmed that I was on the right track.. uninstalling and trying yet again became les frustrating an option.
Thanks.
BTW- I needed this env to do the projects in what sems to be a very interesting book.. "macromedia Flash MC application design and development" by Jessica Speigel .. published by New Riders.
Her flash help website is at www.were-here.com.. the projects in the book are for flash-based multiplayer games and multi-user formums and such.
