Dual boot arch from second hard drive [SOLVED]

I have two sata hard drives connected. Hard drive 0 has my working updated version of arch.
I'm trying to boot off the second hard drive that has an older installation of arch. I have added this to my menu.lst of my first hard drive:

I have also tried using /dev/sdb1 on the kernel line with the same results. The uuid is correct I am able to obtain that from /dev/disk/by-uuid/
this is definately where the vmlinuz26 file resides for that hard drive. I can mount it and see it.
But when I choose this option, it tries to boot but then I get:
kinit: init not found!
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
Pid: 1, comm: init not tainted 2.6.31-ARCH #1
What do I need to change? Do I need to add something to that initrd line? Thanks.

I had to change the uuid to that of the root partition on sdb (the second hard drive) even though I had a /boot partition on it (sdb1). It is now working.

[SOLVED] Dual-boot Arch/Windows - 2 hard drives

Hi Everyone
I've just installed Arch and I'm having a bit of a problem dual-booting between Arch and Windows XP, which are each on a seperate Hard drive.
I've done this successfully before with Mepis Linux and Windows XP, but for some reason it's not working this time.
The difference is that I've recently purchased a new computer and both Windows and Arch are on SATA drives whereas last time they were both on IDE drives. Also I'm not sure whether or not to enable SATA AHCI mode in the BIOS (apparently it doesn't work with XP anyways), or SATA port 0-3 Native mode. Although I've tried all possible combinations and it doesn't seem to work at all.
Here is my menu.lst file:

When I boot into Arch from Grub it works fine, but when I try to boot into Windows from Grub, I get this:

and then nothing....No error message or anything. It just hangs. Does anyone have any ideas as to what's happening? Thanks in advance.
edit: It seems I solved the problem by adding these lines to the menu.lst file:
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
root (hd1,0)
I can now boot into either Arch or Windows from the Grub menu

This is a question that can very easily be answered by doing a simple google serach. Google is your friend. I suggest you start there and come back if you run into issues.

Can't Boot from Second Hard Drive

I put a second SSD hard drive into the bay for a second hard drive but I'm unable to boot from it even after making it the primary drive in the computer settings.
Both hard drive are running Windows 8 if that makes a difference.
Any ideas?

Do you have an Intel version of OS X installed on the external drive and did you partition the external drive using the GUID partition scheme? If not then that's your problem. Also, depending upon which model MBP you have you may require a later version of OS X. According to my information the C2D 17" MBP requires at least 10.4.8 (the build that came on the OS X Installer discs that came with the computer.) 10.4.6 will not boot that model.

Booting from second hard drive

I have a T510 (4349-2PU) on which I would like to install a second hard drive using the ultrabay adapter. The primary purpose of this would be to run an alternative OS. I wonder if someone could please confirm whether or not this is likely to work, and if I would need to make any changes to the Bios settings? Also, would it matter which drive has the boot manager installed?

they would both need boot manager installed you would need to set the one you want to boot to first in the BIOs if you want the ultrabay HDD to boot it has to be listed first in the boot order
correction: from andyp Install the OS on the "second" drive with it in the primary slot - swap it to the bay, insert the original drive as primary and use the F12 function at boot. No need for a boot manager - easy peasy.

How do I boot Leopard from external hard drive?

I'm currently staring off into space... my 3 month old MBP seems to have finished its painfully long boot and all that appears the Leopard background. The local Mac guru isn't available until Monday but did tell me I need to boot from my external hard drive. Um, how do I boot from external hard drive?
The cause of the problem: inserting flash drive powering up.
Tried safe boot. Only difference was iCal reminder popped up in space.
Mac guru told me do NOT use install disks!

Apple support has told me that you cannot boot a MBP from an external drive when Leopard is installed on a MBP.
That is just plain wrong.
1) Hook up your external drive. Use FireWire for better performance.
2) Launch Disk Utility and highlight the actual drive icon at the left. Click on the Partition tab.
3) In the Partition section, click on the Options button. Click on the radio button for "GUID Partition Map". This is the option you must use in order for a drive to be bootable on an Intel based Mac. Click OK.
4) Set up your partitions however you want and click the Partition button at the lower right.
From here, you can either clone your internal drive to the external, or install Leopard on it from scratch.

W540 - boot from second hard drive?

Morning,
I've recently got an ultrabay adapter and wanted to know if I could run two separate OSs, one from each hard disc.
Effectively, I would like to have one version of windows on the internal HDD for general day to day stuff and one as a programming environment and be able to select which to boot from at start up.
I know I could just use a VM, but some of this stuff (Siemens PCS7) can put quite a strain on the system and I'd rather not have that overhead.

Hello.
To run a dual OS setup, you have to turn off Secure Boot and set your boot options to both UEFI and Legacy.
I run a dual boot setup Win8.1/Fedora on both my T440's and though it is possible to set it up with UEFI boot
I just skip that hassle and run both OS in legacy mode. If you're planning on dual-booting different Windows
editions, that even applies more.

In BIOS go to Security - Secure Boot - Set to Disabled.
Then go to Startup - Set UEFI/Legacy Boot to Both.
A little further down, set Boot device list F12 Option to Enabled and then you can press F12 during Post
to select which drive to boot from.

How to boot from second hard drive in Ultra Bay

Hi all!
I recently installed a SSD drive as my primary disk and mounted my old hard drive in the Ultrabay. It still has all its original partitions, which are:
Windows "System Drive"
Windows OS
Ubuntu
Windows Programs
General Data
I can access 1., 2., and 5. from within my new Win7 install on the SSD.
My SSD drive is fully encrypted with TrueCrypt.
Is there any way I can boot from the HDD in the Ultrabay? I still want to access some of the old data on the system drive.
Ideally, there would also be a way to keep the Ubuntu partition and boot it when required. Any chance of making that happen?

Hit F12 to pull up the boot menu when you turn the machine on. Select the drive in the Ultrabay. Beware that the drive you boot off of will become the C: drive until you boot off the other drive again. One thing you should do if you haven't already done it is put the stock drive back in the main drive bay, boot into Windows, and burn a recovery disc set. You may need this in the future and it is a good thing to have should you decide to sell the system later since you sill be able to restore it to factory condidtion.
If you just need to access the other partiton all you need to do is right click Computer in Windows Explorer, select Manage, click Disk Management, and assign the partition a drive letter. I would recommend just burning the recovery disc set and wiping out the stock drive so that you can use it for storage.

WinXP dual boot Solaris on 2nd hard drive problem...

run into a bit of a prob with dual booting winxp and solaris. I have WinXP on 1st hard drive and Solaris on 2nd hard drive 2 (Solaris - partition 1 with slice 0 x86 active, DOS - partition 2 for installing linux later, DOS - partition 3 for fat32 file storage later).
I want to boot to Solaris on drive 2 from the WinXP boot loader on drive 1. Could somebody please tell me exactly how to do this as I've copied the bootsect.sun file from Solaris via floppy to the WinXP C:\ drive, and edited the WinXP boot loader to:

I am having a same issue....
1.....1st 80 GB hard disk, I had window XP installed. (NTFS format)
2....add 200 GB, 2nd hard drive, make 3 partitions, on first 50GB partition I have install Solaris 10.....Having some issue with network config, but its resolve, thank this forum.....
Now, everytime when ever I need to go to Solarid, I have to go in BIOS screen and switch HD, I mean if I want to boot to solaris, I have to make a 2nd (200GB) hd primary..Soaris work fine, but from the GRUB menu, if I select window, its get hung up...
now if I want to boot to window, again I have to go to BIOS and need to switch around hdd.... make 1st (80GB) hdd primary, windows work fine....
Questions are, I do not want to go bacK & forth in BIOS.....
1....Can some one help me, provide me the step-by-step information that how can i set up dual boot, so I can use my 2nd drive (200GB) as a primary and from the GRUB, I select windows and its boot to windows... if its otherway around,,,its still ok....I don't want my kids mess up BIOS....

Running Arch from a usb drive[SOLVED]

I am trying to install arch on a usb drive with ext3 format. I have entered root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/... on the kernel line and in /etc/fstab file (as mentioned in the wiki). On booting I am dropped to a limited shell with few linux commands. On running 'blkid' there, I find that the fixed computer hard disk is detected as sda1,2 etc and usb drive is not being detected at all. The results are similar if I use root=/dev/disk/by-label/..
How can I boot from the usb drive.

Booting macbook from external hard drive- Is it doable?

I've had my white macbook since 2006. (I LOVE IT) However, I'd like to use it as a "desktop" until I can get a mac mini. Is it possible to move EVERYTHING thats on it to an external hard drive (terabyte) and boot it up from there? Also, once I get the mac mini, will I be able to restore the macbook to its "original" state? I ask this because I only have a little over 6gigs left on my hard drive. (Lots of music, graphics, videos and apps) I bought a terabyte to free up some space, but still haven't been able to free up enough to make a difference. I am assuming (and i could be wrong) that I could just take everything on the mac and move it to the hard drive, boot it from there, and all will be well in the world.
So is it doable? (If it is… I might not even need to get the mac mini.)

Yes.
First, Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Second, Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Third, Open Startup Disk preferences, change the startup disk to the external drive, then click on the Restart button. The computer will now permanently boot from the external drive.

Help, need help booting XP from external hard drive

Hi all, i can't seem to get XP to boot from my external hard drive.
OK, heres the story. i have an imac. i use bootcamp to run OSX and XP. things are good. but i run out of space, so i buy myself a 2tb bare drive and swap it out. so i put the original internal with OSX and XP into an external firewire/usb enclosure. I install refit. I hold option on startup and it shows that i have a windows and a mac OS i can boot from the External firewire disk. looks great, but when i choose the windows from the Ext disk, it doesn't boot, instead it loads windows7 on my new 2tb internal disk.
i hear its hard to boot windows XP from an external disk. my professor told me it has something to do with the boot.ini file on the XP disk... something about changing the value of the "rdisk" to 1, which i have done.
i am not trying to reinstall xp, rather just boot from it because i have so many applications/plugins that i do not wish to reinstall.
Does anyone know if this is possible?>> Logon to windows7, and create a system image/backup of the system FROM the XP external disk? and then reinstall XP on that disk, then restore back onto itself? that way i won't have to reinstall.

Boot T61 from T41 hard drive

I have a T41 (running XP Pro SP2) and a T61 (running XP Pro SP3). Both have the security solution that shipped with the new machine enabled. Would there be any problem booting the T61 from the T41's hard drive?* Or booting the T41 from the T61's hard drive?* One concern I have is that the security solution will detect the mismatch between the drive and the machine and will lock me out, "thinking" that either drive or machine is stolen. Would this be a problem? Is there anything else I need to know to make this work? Yes, there is such a thing as a stupid question, and this may be one. Thanks for any guidance.
*In case you want to know why, the T41's monitor died so I can't travel with it (it is connected to an external monitor on my desk.). I need to travel with the the T41's data and programs. My wife uses the T61, but it doesn't have the software I need and mine doesn't have the the software she uses. The easiest solution would be to swap machines but keep our own hard drives.

T41 uses a PATA hdd, and T61 uses a SATA hdd. If you need to run a pata hdd from T61 you would need a PATA capable ultrabay hdd adapter.
I am not sure how the security solution going to react to such a big change in hardware between the T41 to T61.

Mini won't boot up from internal hard drive

I can't get my Mac Mini to boot from it's internal hard drive. It just gets stuck at the grey apple screen wth the spinning gear, nonstop. Booting in safe mode produced the same behavior (still wouldn't boot). DiskWarrior fixed some directory problems and found some corrupted microsoft office files which I deleted but it still won't boot. It boots fine off an external USB drive.
I've tried disconnecting all peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, resetting NVRAM/PRAM, and reinstalling the OS over the existing one (but not a clean install).
Disk Utility and DiskWarrior both now say the boot drive is fine, but of course it still gets stuck at the grey boot screen.
Booting in verbose mode it shows the following errors and then hangs:

/usr/standalone/bootcaches.plist
/private/var/db/BootCache.playlist
Is possibly corrupt.

Booting XP from External Hard Drive

I have this external hard drive:

Is it possible to run Windows XP from that USB2.0 Hard Drive without having an internal hard drive connected to the computer?

Q-2: In BIOS setup, in "Advanced BIOS Features" select "Boot Sequence" then select "Boot Other Device". Page 3-8 of the manual.

Booting Solaris From External Hard Drive

Hi,
I have a Dell Laptop 600m, currently running on Windows xp. I have an external Hard Drive. I was wondering, if i can connect my external HDD to laptop and boot it from it and instlall Solaris x86 on the external hard disk and work on it. Is it possible to do so. Will I get into any issues by doing so.

If it's an external USB or Firewire HDD: no, that won't work. Solaris'
bootstrap loader is unable to load the OS from an USB or Firewire
mass storage device. There are rumors that this will be supported
in the future, but with the current Solaris 10 Express release (and
probaly the final Solaris 10 FCS release), this isn't supported and
does not work.
