Duplex and grayscale with generic PostScript driver?

Does anyone know if there is a way to allow the user to select options such as duplex or grayscale when using the generic PostScript driver?
Or, if this is not possible, is there a third party generic PostScript driver that does offer these options?
The printer manufacturer's driver does offer these but sends QPDL instead of PostScript to the printer, which means we can't charge for the print job correctly.
Thanks,

Hello Dan,
The Generic Postscript driver included with OS X does give you the option to print duplex but not b/w (grayscale). To enable duplex, select the Generic PS printer in Printers & Scanners, click on Options & Supplies and then select the Options tab. Here you can enable the Duplex unit.
So if the vendor does not have a supporting PPD that provides duplex and B/W then you could try the Fiery Express Driver which you can get from EFI. Note that you have to register to gain access to the driver.

  • Printer server always uses Generic Postscript Driver so cannot print!

I have setup print server in Leopard Server with my 2 x HP 2600n Lasers, I have installed the HP drivers but when I try to add the printer to the pool it always uses the generic postscript driver which the printer will not work with, any suggestions?
    Thanks

The 2600n series uses host-based printing and will not print over LPR or IPP. The host computer will only communicate with the printer over BonJour which won't work across subnets unless you have Wide-Area DNS-SD setup on your network. Leopard's print server only prints to printers over LPR or IPP but can advertise LPR and IPP queues via BonJour.

  • Pdf reader X has problems with small pdf and printer with post script driver

    Hi friends.
I have installed new Reader X and then i saw that, when i print a very small pdf with about 50 kb and i print it on a Laserjet 4000 printer the printer has problem with the amount of data that reader 10 produces.
When i install a Postscript driver for the printer my computer makes up to 3.5MB printer data from a 50kb pdf.
When i install a PCL driver for the printer my computer makes only 350kb from the same 50kb pdf file!!!!
When i install Reader 9.3 the 50kb file becomes also only 350kb on the printer with post script driver, and i can print without problems also.
my printer has 8 MB Ram and that should be enough for 3.5MB printer data.
But when i print the pdf with 1 side only, the printer created a side who is only filled with 50% of the text, then there comes out a second page with the message.....not enough memory in the printer.
i can not change the postscript driver to a pcl driver cause our ERP System can not handle printer with PCL drivers.
Can someone help me please.........are there settings in Reader X who can solve my problem ???
Thank you very much for help!

  • Y510p and problem with Update Nvidia Driver

Hi everyonei have problem with updating my y510p lenovo laptop nvidia driver ,my current nvidia driver version is 327.62 which i download from lenovo website,Now for better performance in new games like gta v and witcher3 ,i decide to updating nvidia driver, first remove my nvidia graphic driver from add or remove then download nvidia ver 350 from nvidia official web site , which nvidia website confirm it support my graphic card which is Gt755m , then i install new ver and during install i check clean install , after successful install , restart laptop , then there was problem . when i try to open nvidia control panel it wont running and an error showed up and said "You are not currently using a display attached to an NVIDIA GPU" .i try to open a game , game running in really low fps and i find out game run on hd graphic of my laptop and my nvidia graphic wont run .The only way to repair was i install my last nvidia driver 327.62 and run a system restore .guys what is your suggestion and how i can update my y510p nvidia driver ?Thanks

    Hi Y510Man,
The video graphics installation order is important. You need to install the Intel Graphics first, and then do the Nvidia. IIRC you should un-install the Nvidia driver, then re-install (or upgrade) the Intel HD Graphics driver. Reboot, and install the new Nvidia driver.
I don't know why, but every time I upgraded my Y470 Nvidia driver, I had to use this procedure. First install, or re-install, the Intel driver, then install the Nvidia. You can't just upgrade the Nvidia driver without a re-install of the Intel. I think it has to do with the Optimus setting, and the automatic switching.
Let us know how it goes.
    Cheers

  • SYNCING IPHONE AND ITUNES WITH NEW HARD DRIVE

My hard drive crashed on my mac book pro and I had to replace it with a new one. I'm trying to get new music onto my iphone that I purchased thru Itunes, but it is saying that only one computer can be used. This is the only computer that I used for the library, but now there is a new hard drive in it. Obviously I do not want to lose the music on my iphone and I'm curious how or if I can get around the message saying that if I want to sync to a new computer that it will erase the prior library. Please advice because I would like to update my iphone as soon as possible.

Connect the iPhone and choose Transfer Purchases from the dialog box which appears or the File menu in iTunes. Do NOT sync the iPhone until you've completed this task.

    hi
did you install sw ide when you installed system drivers?
nvidesm can be nvidia ide drivers.
they work for some and fore som not.
    they messed up my harddrives.
when installing you get asked if you want to install them or not.
i dont know if these ide drivers are included in 2.03 but thought it could be worth mention.
but they are included on the cd that came with the motherboard.
i read in here that you dont have to reinstall windows to get rid of them.
you only have to install system drivers again and say no when asked to install them.

  • I have Acrobat Pro 9 and Macbook with no CD drive

I've seen other threads about this with no resolution. I got as far as a page here on Adobe and found Acrobat Pro 9 "unavailable" to download.
Arghh...I have my serial numbers (small business with only 3 of us, and need it on my home laptop, but can't load from original media).
    Suggestions welcome.

I am signed in to Adobe, followed the "Click «HERE» to visit this page first" link, (which goes to a download page for Elements 13),
I then clicked "See all downloads" at the bottom (figuring that's how I'm going to find Acrobat Pro 9 for Mac)...
    Nope.
You missed Step 3 in the prodesigntools instructions.
"3. Now close any windows that popped up and cancel any downloads that started."
In following that (deliberately tricky and non-intuitive) step, you have tricked the Adobe server into placing a trial version cookie on your hard drive. Now you're ready to download Acrobat 9 - not directly from adobe.com - but from the Adobe servers via the prodesigntools website download links.
So, then, go back to the prodesigntools page and click the download link for Acrobat 9 for Mac.

  • Top margin when printing with Generic text driver

I created a report in Character Mode and tryed to print it using the Generic Text windows printer driver, but the Reports is adding a non-specified top margin. I already removed all the margins of this report in the Layout Editor but the problem continues. What can I do to solve this problem ?

Is it shifting only down, or to the right as well?
What are the bleed an slug settings, and are you including slug and bleed in the print?
Is the dialog set to print in upper left corner, and if so does it change when you print centered?

  • How to manage clips and Projects with external Hard drives

I have a lot of video, I use external hard drives so my internal does not fill up. But now I have several different iMovie libraries. How do I merge them or clean up this mess. I am using the latest version of I movie 10.0.4

    Hi
You must do this the right way.
    • EXTERNAL Hard disk - MUST - be Mac OS Extended formatted
Nothing else will do - for VIDEO !
    • The Moving of Event's and Project's - Must be done within the iMovie Application
Folders named iMovie Event's and iMovie Project's - can not be moved via Desktop/Finder - as links back to iMovie will break and can not be mended.
    My general note on this:
    Moving Event's and Project's
Connection - Either connect one Mac in Target mode to the other via FireWire. Or use an external hard disk !
(Target-Mode - Start one Mac e.g. laptop - BUT keep T-key down during full up-start - Now a FW-symbol is jumping around the screen and it will work as an external hard disk when connected to the other Mac)
    A. The External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work for Video. UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most other things but not for Video whatever program is used (iMovie or FinalCut)
    B. Should be a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up
    C. Do never Move or Alter any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder - as this will result in iMovie losing connections to them and repair can be anything from hard to impossibly.
    D. Moving and Copying must be done within iMovie application and Events to Events - and - Project's to Project's.
    E. Moving Project's to Event's - Do not work for me - I have to export project as a QuickTime movie then Import this into Events.
Event's window can show two faces
    Like this
    or like this
from one hard disk Event - You can move it to the other hard disk
You can not (at least not me) move Event to Project or other way around only
Event to Event and Project to Project
    Yours Bengt W

  • After 10.5.5, no more duplex printing (generic postscript)

I have a printer for which there is no Mac native driver, so I have to use the "Generic Postscript" driver. Up to 10.5.4, anything printed from the Mac would honor the front panel setting with regard to duplexing. As far as I can guess, since 10.5.5, the generic driver is now sending an explicit "single sided" command to the printer.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might fix this?

    Hi,
you can try to exchange your "pstops" file by the one from 10.5.4 as described in:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1715794&tstart=0#8157481
At least this fixed a similar problem in my case which appeared with 10.5.5 (or the latest HP printer driver update - I am not sure, because I installed both updates at quite the same time).
    Best regards,
    Steffen

  • Acrobat and Distiller; is Postscript Driver necessary?

Hi. I'm using Adobe Technical Communications Suite (TCS), which includes FrameMaker 8 and Acrobat 8 3D. This is a more general Acrobat question, which is why I'm not posting in the 3D forum.
Where I work, there are are some long-standing procedures for installing and using software. A lot of these procedures go back many years and are not always kept up to date, or are not always examined very closely.
The procedure for installing and using FrameMaker and Acrobat includes a step for installing the generic Postscript printer driver (winsteng.exe). Then, you set up the Postscript driver to use Acrobat Distiller as its PPD.
But here's the thing: I set up a new system with a fresh install of TCS and skipped the whole Postscript driver thing. Didn't bother with it at all. And when I test FrameMaker and Acrobat everything works fine. I "Save as PDF," have access to all the same Distiller configurations, and create a perfectly good PDF with all components, fonts, and colors intact.
That begs the question of WHAT IS THE POINT of installing the Postscript driver? (Especially if it just points back to Distiller as the PPD...)
Can I safely assume that this whole Postscript driver is a hold over from long ago, when perhaps it was necessary? Or is there something I'm not aware of; some flaw or risk of making PDFs without the Postscript driver?
BTW, it's a WinXP environment, and we ship both PDFs and printed docs to the customer. Docs are printed in-house. I will test a non-Postscript PDF with the in-house printer, but in the meantime, are there any Postscript whiz kids here who can enlighten me?
    Thanks!

A few things are a bit unclear. Sorry for all the ">" stuff, but it's the best way to keep track:
    >>The fonts are not Zipped. Helvetica seems to be installed normally in WINDOWS/FONTS
    > How can you tell, given that, as I said, you can't check this with
Windows Explorer? And especially, given that it doesn't show up on a
    search.
I'm not sure what you mean. When I look in the WINDOWS/FONTS folder, I see the Helvetica fonts, both the font names and the file names. I agree that the Fonts folder doesn't show you everything in the folder, but this isn't an issue of something NOT being there; with Helvetica it IS there. So what do you mean by "can't check this with Windows Explorer?" I'm looking right at it.
However, I said that Zapf Dingbats was NOT in the WINDOWS/FONTS folder, and I was wrong; it's not visible (due to the reasons you're talking about) but when I do a search on the font's file name, the file is located in the WINDOWS/FONTS folder. (I don't know why you say it doesn't show up on a search...)
So what we have is that Helvetica at least APPEARS to be correctly installed, and Zapf Dingbats appears to NOT be correctly installed (because if it was correctly installed, it would show up in Explorer... Or so I surmise.)
    >> I don't know how to install them elsewhere.
    > When you install a font, you have the choice to select "copy font" or not.
OK, after writing a long paragraph about how your answer doesn't address the question, I realized there's a big disconnect here, on my part. I've always interpreted "Copy Fonts to Fonts Folder" as meaning "copy the fonts from the source to the local machine, versus leaving them on the source, which could be a CD or network location." In other words, I thought it was about copying vs. not copying. I didn't realize it was referring to the specific LOCATION. Thanks Microsoft. Grrrr!
WAIT! After writing that, I deleted the Zapf Dingbat files from WINDOWS/FONTS with the intention of reinstalling them elsewhere. So I clicked "Install New Fonts," turned OFF "Copy Fonts to Fonts Folder," and clicked OK, expecting to be prompted for a location.
No. It started installing (where? who knows?) and then came back with the following error message from the Windows Fonts Folder: "The copyright holder of the "Zapf Dingbats" font will not allow their font to be converted to TrueType. Please contact the font vendor for more information."
Um. (a) So I still don't know how to install to a location other than WINDOWS/FONTS, and (b) what's all this "convert to TrueType" stuff? I never asked for that. I just want to install it as-is, as a Type 1!
    > Right, now we seem to be on to something. This doesn't seem like
anything to do with whether it can find the font. Distiller does NOT
make decisions like this. It suggests something at a higher level has
made the substitution before writing the PostScript file.
    But what? Any ideas? Anyone?
    >>One possibility is that perhaps my fonts are not licensed or whatever.
    > No, you'd get specific errors.
That's what I would expect. But keep in mind that I don't know the origin or history of these fonts. They're just being tossed around amongst the people I work with. I don't know if there are any kind of DRM issues or whatever.

  • File copy with 2 IDE Drive and Soundblaster problem

    Hi,
When i try to copy large files my system will usually lock (windows totally freezes, the only solution is to do a hard reset). I cut the problem down to beeing an issue with my sound blaster live platinum 5.1.
Everything is working fine when I remove the soundblaster.
I read somewhere that this problem was known with former motherboard with VIA chipset like KT133 but I was hoping it had been fixed since then...
    Here's my config :
    KT6 Delta 2 FISR
    Athlon Barton 2500+
    512 Mo  RAM
2 IDE Drive (not on the same IDE connector)
Creative Live Sound Blaster Platinum 5.1 (CT4830)
I have upgraded all the possible drivers : VIA4in1 (v4.51), latest BIOS upgrade (E6590v2.0), latest creative drivers....
I tried a lot of different settings in the BIOS (PCI latency, PCI bus mastering etc...)
    This is really anoying...
    Please help !!!

    change pci latency to 96.
change "system performance setting" within DRAM settings to "FAST"
    you could also;
try changing "System Bios Cachable" to "Enabled"
and change "C000 Shadow" to "Cacheable"
im using all those above settings, and thats with ALOT of drives attached as well, and ive been copying 20+GB files all over the place including over network drives.

  • No black&white or grayscale option for postscript printer

At work we have a Sharp laser copier printer that is capable of printing in color.  They tell us, however, to avoid printing in color because it costs more.
Normally, in the print dialog, there's an advanced option where you can select to print in color or grayscale.  For this printer, for some reason, when we provide the address, and MacOS queries the printer type, it just appears as "Generic PostScript printer," and as a result, there is no such advanced option.
Is there another "generic" postscript driver we can select that will include this option?
Incidentally, I can't figure out how to change what driver is being used for this printer.  Any hints?
    Thanks.

The Generic PS driver included with OS X will only print in colour to a colour device. As you have found, there is no setting to change it to Grayscale/B&W.

If the Sharp supports the PCL printer language, there is a Generic PCL Laser driver also included with OS X that will only print in B&W.
If the Sharp does not support the PCL printer language then check the Sharp web site for a "PPD" for your model. This should give you the option to print in B&W.

If the printer is already created then you can use the CUPS web admin page to change the settings for the printer. But it is often just easier to delete the printer from Printers & Scanners and create a new one. Note that when creating the printer, you can click on the Use menu and this will give you options to select an alternate driver.

  • HP LaserJet 4 Postscript driver on Intel MacBook Pro

I have an HP Laserjet 4M printer (with a JetDirect card) on my network. On my other Macs (PowerBook G4, PowerMac G4, Mac Mini PPC) all running 10.4 I set the printer up and was able to use the 'HP Laserjet 4/4M PostScript' (v1.1.0.X) driver. The support site lists printer drivers included with 10.4 and lists the 'HP LasderJet 4/4M PostScript' driver (v1.1.0.X) as being part of the HP printer package provided with 10.4 - I assume that is what I'm using on these machines. I just got a new MacBook Pro with 10.4 and can't find the HP LaserJet 4/4M PostScript driver anywhere - I've tried to re-load the HP printer drivers from the install CD and it says they are already installed. When I choose the model in the printer setup utility I see the LJ 4 Gimp driver but not the other. I've currently set it up with the Generic PostScript driver, but that doesn't have any of the model specific options that the HP driver has. Are the printer drivers that are supplied with 10.4 different for PowerPC vs Intel Macs? Or am I not looking in the right place for the driver?
    TIA
    Ben

    Hi Ben,
Well done with finding the file. Based on your info I searched the PPD folder and found the LaserJet 4.gz, which after unpacking and opening saw that it was ppd for the HP LaserJet 4/4M PostScript 600DPI entry I could see in the printer list under HP.
As to how this file got there I cannot say for sure. I would have said that it was part of the 10.4.6 DVD that came with the MacBook Pro. But after checking a new Mini, I found it doesn't have this file? So, I know I have previously run a HP installer to help a forum postee. Maybe the LaserJet 4.gz was added by this installer. Certainly the 'Date Modified' field is different to the other HP files (04/03/2005 vs 17/11/2005) and it is the only file with this date. Very weird!!
    Looking at the ppd there is reference to five printer driver plug-ins;
    *APDialogExtension: "/Library/Printers/hp/PDEs/hpColorOptions.plugin"
    *APDialogExtension: "/Library/Printers/hp/PDEs/hpEdgeToEdge.plugin"
    *APDialogExtension: "/Library/Printers/hp/PDEs/hpFinishing.plugin"
    *APDialogExtension: "/Library/Printers/hp/PDEs/hpImageQuality.plugin"
    *APDialogExtension: "/Library/Printers/hp/PDEs/hpProofAndPrint.plugin"
Now, all of these files are present on my Mac and when I looked at the info of these files I found there are written in Universal. Checking the Mini again, I found the same files, also in Universal, so it looks like the plug-ins are part of the OS X 10.4.6 install. So, if the LaserJet 4.gz file was added by a different installer, it is interesting that it makes use of these plugins that are already present.
Anyway, we may never now the answer but the concern now is that you have a speed/quality issue using the ppd. The fact that you took this file from a PPC Mac won't be the issue. A ppd is just a text file describing a variety of options for the printer. But if you don't have those plugins mentioned earlier then that could cause delays and the quality issue, because the option to set the 600dpi quality is within these plugins. The other thing could be that the ppd you obtained from the PPC Mac wants to use different files to the ones you do have. Open the ppd using TextEdit - you should see something near the top like above (or the exact thing). Look at where the files should be and check that they are there.
The other thing I noticed is that the ppd is calling an old version of the PostScript Interpreter (v2011.110), which is Level 2. I'm not sure how well the Intel Mac's work with level 2, maybe additional instructions are required or Rosetta has to be used which is causing delays in the file creation and therefore the spooling? Without a PSLvl2 device I cannot confirm this, but it may explain why the PPC's are spooling faster than the Intel. A test could be to set the Universal application to open using Rosetta. I would use TextEdit, and with it still set to Universal, print a few pages and time it. Then, set TextEdit to open using Rosetta (by doing a Get Info on the application icon) and print the same file. If there is no difference then my idea is rubbish and there must be something else. But if it does make a difference, then you have a workaround. Although I personally believe that slowing your Mac so that the spooling appears quicker is not the answer. Might be time to invest in a brand new HP...

    Paul

  • REMOVE BEATS AUDIO, LOAD GENERIC SOUND DRIVE, MAINTAIN OR REINSTALL STEREO MIX, HP ENVY, 8.1

HP Envy Touchscreen 15-k073ca Notebook (new) with Windows 8.1, Beats Audio and stereo mix Instructions as detailed as possible would be appreciated to totally remove Beats Audio from the notebook and load Windows generic sound drive. I would also like instructions on how to enable the stereo mix option which is included in the new notebook I do not know if totally removing Beats Audio also removes or adversely affects the stereo mix, if so, detailed instructions on how to repair or reinstall the stereo mix would also be appreciatedIf this becomes necessay, I would have to check with HP to see if the warranty is affected. To receive the best results with Audacity, stereo mix is required and Beats Audio has to be completely removed from the notebook. Beats Audio produces bad results when using Audacity Any response on all or part of this post would be appreciated

    Hello  ,
Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand you wish to remove Beats Audio from your notebook and use the generic Windows drivers. Follow these steps:Press Windows + R.Type msconfig and click OK.Click the Start up tab.Uncheck IDT PC Audio.Click Apply.Reboot.Press Windows + R.Type devmgmt.msc and click OK.Expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers.Right click IDT device and click UninstallCheck the box to remove the driver.Reboot.This should disable the Beats Audio allowing you to uninstall it and subsequently force Windows to reinstall the generic audio drivers. Keep in mind without the Beats Audio you may not have access to the Stereo Mix feature.  Is the Stereo Mix device not listed in recording devices or is it listed but showing unavailable? Typically the stereo mix feature will not work unless it is set as the default device or if the internal microphone is disabled. Let me know if this helps.
