Duplicate Oracle Database 9i

Dear all,
can please someone instruct me how can I duplicate(migrate) database from one database server to another?
I have a test environment under Linux (Red Hat release 4) and Oracle 9i Relese 2 database.
I have to transfer all datafiles, control files, etc to another Database server, also under Linux (Red Hat release 4). Everything must be the same(SID, location of the datafiles ...).
Thanks in advance

If you are using RMAN, check out the duplicate database command.

  • Duplicate Oracle Database 8.1.7.0 using RMAN

An old database needs to be duplicated... :(
We have an old database named TAPES running on Windows 2003 (32bit) and Oracle 8.1.7.0
The team wants to duplicate / clone this database to another location. We have setup another server, with Windows 2003 and installed Oracle Software 8.1.7.0 with
starter database. The two machines A and B has no network connection (they are on different sites). Also the structure of the machines are different (the location of the database files are different)
How can I duplicate this using RMAN. We cannot afford any downtime on TAPES prod. The idea is:
-backup TAPES prod using RMAN (hot backup)
-copy and tranport the backup files to the remote machine B
-restore (and recover) the RMAN backup to Machine B
-the duplicate database has the same name
In oracle 9i, 10g and 11g, this is easy...and i must admit...i dont know how to do it in Oracle 8.1.7.0...
    I need help... :(
    thanks a lot!

thanks...i saw one article with this approach..but the document did not present the detailed process...do you have one? i am still searching for a good procedure to follow...since it is an old database and focusing/studying old versions like this is a pain in the a**... :(

  • Oracle Database upgrade to 11G (Host_Command Issues)

Sorry I'm posting this again. Original post in Database - Upgrade. I'm not getting a lot of clicks in that category
We recently upgraded to Oracle 11g (Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.2.0 - 64bit Production). Our PL/SQL release: (PL/SQL Release 11.2.0.2.0 - Production). We use a lot of host commands inside our PL/SQL stored procedures. One of these included fetching data from an external server and pushing the data into Oracle Tables.
Most of this process is running fine, except the execution never completes. There is no issue data wise. It's just that the Host_command doesn't receive the completion status and seems to be running even though there's nothing going on in the background.
The Oracle e-business suite's concurrent program based on this stored proc also never completes, though it doesn't do anything in the background. For testing purpose, our DBA used 2 insert statements one before and one after the host_command. The insert before the host_command worked but not the one after. Please help! This is happening after we upgraded to 11g 3 weeks ago!
    Thanks, Naveen Gagadam.

    Moderator Action:
No they cannot send you a document that is available only to those with access to MOS.
That would violate the conditions of having such service contract credentials.
Asking someone to violate such privileges is a serious offense and could get that other person's organization banned from all support and all their support contracts cancelled.

  • How can we clone the Oracle database in new Oracle Home

    Hi,
I would like to clone oracle database into new oracle home. How can we set it using OEM.
I am using 10g grid control. Target db is on solaris
    Thanks
    Naveen

after logging into target database, under maintenance tab, data movement header; ther is "clone database" option. When you click on it; you'll see :
Clone Database uses RMAN to duplicate a database from:
-- An open database in ARCHIVELOG mode, or
-- An open database in NOARCHIVELOG mode (restart required), or
-- A saved working directory from previous cloning
Clone Database performs the following operations:
-- Backup each database file and store it in a working directory
-- Transfer each backup file from source to destination host
-- Restore each backup file to existing destination Oracle Home
-- Recover the cloned database with saved archived log files
-- Open the cloned database with resetlogs
It seems to be for cloning to a different host, but i guess you can chose the same host for source and destination. (I've never used cloning on em by the way :))
But firstly, you should create a new oracle home, you can simply copy your oracle home with a new name (cp -R /oracle/app/oracle/product/10.2.0 /oracle/app/oracle/product/10.2.0.new) or make a new installation.
I suggest you to do this cloning with CLI. You should take a full backup with RMAN, copy the oracle home, create a new initNEWSID.ora file and nomount the database, restore (or simply copy) controlfiles, restore database (with set newname commands), recover database, open resetlogs.

  • Oracle SQL template to create re-usable DDL/DML Scripts for Oracle database

    Hi,
I have a requirement to put together a Oracle SQL template to create re-usable DDL/DML Scripts for Oracle databases.
Only the Oracle DBA will be running the scripts so permissions is not an issue.
The workflow for any DDL is as follows:-
    1) New Table
    a. Check if the table exists from the system/admin views.
    b. If table exists then give message "Table Exists"
    c. If table does not exist then execute DDL code
    2) Add Column
    a. Check if Column exists for a given table from system/admin views
    b. If column exists in the specified table,
    b1. backup table.
b2. alter table to make changes to the column
b3. verify data or execute dml script convert from backup to the new change.
    c. If Column does not exist
    c1. backup table
c2. alter table to add column
c3. execute dml to populate column with default value.
The DML scripts are for populating base tables with data required for business operations.
    3) Add new row
    a. check if row exists by comparing old values of each column with new values to be added for the new record.
    b. If exists, give message row exists
    c. If not exists, add new record.
    4) Update existing record (We have createtime columns in these tables so changes can be tracked)
    a. check if row exists using primary key.
    b. If exists,
b1. deactivate the record using the "active" column of the table
b2. Add new record with the changes required.
    c. If does not exist, add new record with the changes required.
Could you please help with some ideas which can get this done accurately?
I have tried several ways, but I am not able to put together something that fulfills all requirements.
    Thank you,

First let me address your question. (This is the easy part.)
    1. The existence of tables can be found in DBA_TABLES. Query it and and then use conditional logic and execute immediate to process the DDL.
    2. The existence of table columns is found in DBA_TAB_COLUMNS. Query it and then conditionally execute your DDL. You can copy the "before picture" of the table using that same dba view, or even better, use DBMS_METADATA.
As for your DML scripts, they should be restartable, reversible, and re-run-able. They should "fail gracefully" on error, be written in such a way that they can run twice in a row without creating duplicate changes.
    3. Adding appropriate constraints can prevent invalid duplicate rows. Also, you can usually add to the where clause so that the DML does only what it needs to do without even relying on the constraint (but the constraint is there as a safeguard). Look up the MERGE statement to learn how to do an UPSERT (update/insert), which will let you conditionally "deactivate" (update) or insert a record. Anything that you cannot do in SQL can be done with simple procedural code.
Now, to the heart of the matter...
You think I did not understand your requirements?
Please be respectful of people's comments. Many of us are professionals with decades of experience working with databases and Oracle technology. We volunteer our valuable time and knowledge here for free. It is extremely common for someone to post what they feel is an easy SQL or PL/SQL question without stating the real goal--the business objective. Experienced people will spot that the "wrong question" has been asked, and then cut to the chase.
We have some good questions for you. Not questions we need answers from, but questions you need to ask yourself and your team. You need to reexamine this post and deduce what those questions are. But I'll give you some hints: Why do you need to do what you are asking? And will this construct you are asking for even solve the root cause of your problems?
Then ponder the following quotations about asking the right question:
    Good questions outrank easy answers.
    — Paul Samuelson
The only interesting answers are those which destroy the questions.
    — Susan Sontag
The scientific mind does not so much provide the right answers as ask the right questions.
    — Claude Levi-Strauss
You can tell whether a man is clever by his answers. You can tell whether a man is wise by his questions.
    — Mahfouz Naguib
One hears only those questions for which one is able to find answers.
    — Friedrich Nietzsche
Be patient towards all that is unresolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves.
    — Rainer Maria Rilke
What people think of as the moment of discovery is really the discovery of the question.
    — Jonas Salk
Judge a man by his questions rather than his answers.
    — Voltaire
The ability to ask the right question is more than half the battle of finding the answer.

  • Consolidation of Oracle Database 10g Express Edition "Bugs"

I'll take a stab at cleaning this up. This is a collection of postings, reported as bugs, but not really bugs or difficult to understand/reproduce. These were filed in the Database General forum and they should have been filed in the XE forum.
Firstly, thank you for taking the time to report these issues and suspected issues. In the future, it would be quite helpful to everyone if you reported these in the XE forum.
    1. Oracle Database 10g Express Edition Bugs
This is not a bug. The developer toolbar will show when you are authenticated to the development environment. You do not have to be authenticated to your application for the developer toolbar to appear.
    2. Oracle Database 10g Express Edition Bugs
If data is present in the cache, this is up to the application developer (you) to implement the proper security which prevents this behavior.
    3. Oracle Database 10g Express Edition  Bugs
This is a minor issue, at best. For this type of search interface, it is desirable to perform a case-insensitive query. Wouldn't it be a shame if you searched for "item" and it did not return results that contained "Item".
    4. Oracle Database 10g Express Edition Bugs
This is not a bug. Different authentication schemes have different data restrictions. It is up to you, the application developer, to easily implement the data validations appropriate for your application.
    5. Oracle Database 10g Express Edition Bugs
Insufficient information provided. You will have to specify what exact error message is arising and what data you changed which resulted in this error. A complete step-by-step test case is desirable, please.
    6. Oracle Database 10g Express Edition Bugs
Duplicate of #5 above. And still insufficient information.
    7. Oracle Database 10g Express Edition Bugs
Not a bug. This is intentional behavior. If I know I want to enter table name EMP, it would be bad from a usability standpoint to always force the user to employ their mouse.
    8. Oracle Database 10g Express Edition Bugs
    This could not be reproduced.
    9. Oracle Database 10g Express Edition Bugs
Almost identical to #8. Please clarify what the expected behavior should be.

  • Error while trying to duplicate a database

    - followed by the list of all datafiles
I've made a full backup of the target database right before the duplicate. Rman reports (list backup; crosscheck backup) the availability of all database backups with all its datafiles.
Unfortunately in my case the reported very strange "shutdown abort"-"startup" - workaround doesn't work.
Has anyone any other hints - or is it just a serious bug (which would prevent me from further time-wasting trials ...).

    duplicate target database to node2 from active database DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT='+DATA1','+DATA2';
    release channel aux14;
    release channel aux13;
    release channel aux12;
    release channel aux11;
    spool log off;
    exit;
Node1 uses ASM disk group DATA1 and I intend to use ASM disk group DATA2 on node2. Has anyone seen this error before? I have tried various permutations of DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT clauses but all error with ORA-19504. On a side note I was able to use ASMCMD cp command to copy a datafile from node1 DATA1 to node 2 DATA2. Also, if I use disk group DATA1 on node 2 then the RMAN duplicate command runs successfully, it only errors when using DATA2. And yes +DATA2 is mounted on node2:
    SQL> select name, state from v$asm_diskgroup;
    NAME STATE
    DATA1 MOUNTED
    DATA2 MOUNTED
Any and all ideas are welcome. I’m running out of things to check.
    Thanks,
    RJL

For a duplicate you don't need to give the DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT especially if you go from a asm to asm diskgroup.
The place where it'll put all the files will be automatically done taking care of the init.ora file parameter db_create_file_dest, (db_create_online_log_dest_1)

  • Doubt   regarding   Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.1.0) installation

    hello
    my pc has following configurtion
    256mb ram
    60gb hdd
    p4 2.4 ghz
    win xp pro sp2
I want to know if my pc will be able to run " Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.1.0) " standard edition on it.
I thought of increasing RAM, but it is not feasible.
I know i could run oracle XE, but can my pc also run the standard edition.
I could not find minimum hardware requirements for standard edition on this site.
anyway, i will use it for sql and and other advanced concepts in RDBMS which i may learn during my course in database. so i prefer standard edition instead of XE
    any help greatly appreciated
    thanks in advance

I suggest you not to doubt   regarding   Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.1.0) installation.
It is not necessary. If you don't receive an answer within a reasonable amount of time you could edit your thread with whatever ( a period is enough) to raise it to the top once again.
It becomes difficult for us to track duplicated threads and unnecessarily duplicates efforts.

Here's what I am running in rman:
