Duplicating a database for tests

I need to be able to re-create the same database, with the same content of datafiles, to conduct several stress tests. Is it possible to just back-up the entire Oracle Home directory, do the first series of tests, and then restore the entire directory to go back to the initial state?
As this seems unlikely, what would be the best approach to quickly "reset" the database to its initial physical state? For instance, if the datafiles got extended because of the large amount of data loaded in the first test, the next test should start with the initial configuration of everything.

Actually, it doesn't seem to work. First, I had to shutdown the database to be able to move the datafiles directory. I was able then to replace this directory and startup the database. But there is an error that prevents me from logging in again:
Agent Connection to Instance
Status Failed
Details ORA-12505: TNS:listener does not currently know of SID given in connect descriptor (DBD ERROR: OCIServerAttach)
The listener status is UP, only the agent connection to instance is down. As I am not able to connect, I cannot restart the database.
Fortunately, I can fix it be putting back the original datafiles directory.
Is there a step that I am missing, which would enable me to swap directories?

    Hi All,
I need to generate 2 TB of database. This is for test purpose, so please provide me with any information that could achieve this in simple steps.
If you could provide script that will be the best. I have 10.2.0.4 database on HPUX 11.31 PA-RISC server.

Multiple tables? Generate raw (meaningless) row data? Generate data for tables that include foreign key constraints and so on? Data for selecting via full table scans or index scans? Or is this simply to test row inserts? What about update and deletes?
You need to be a lot more specific about what you mean with testing purposes.
I have 10.2.0.4 database on HPUX 11.31 PA-RISC server.Note that premiere support for 10.2 has been terminated in July 2010 - whereas it only terminates in January 2015 for 11.2. So it makes a lot more sense to be on a newer version of Oracle.

You can read the OTN license at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/licenses/standard-license-152015.html to check whether it applies to your case or not. If this is not clear you had better call your Oracle sales representative instead of relying on advice given on Internet.

How can get a database like ****.SQL file for test in sqlplus in oracle8i,I am a beginner, thanks

I'll give it a guess as to what it is you want but I'm afraid you'll have to give some more information to go on. I appreciate it's difficult for people who are beginners or who don't have English as their first language.
Are you trying to run a SQL file? From SQL*plus you can do either of these:
    SQL> start my_file
    or
    SQL> @my_file
N.B.: if th efile has a .sql extension you don't need to include it, but you do for any other file extension e.g.
    SQL> @myfile.run

  • Want to separate Portal into 2 part in one Server (1 for Dev,1 for testing)

    Hi.
We have 1 server for Portal development (Oracle Portal 9.0.2.0.1 R2).
    The spec is
    -SunFire280R.
    -2 Gig Memory
    -2 Processor
We install everything in one server (portal, database,iAS)
The Problem is, we also have to use the Server for Testing and Production.
So,how can we separate the Server into two Part, one for Portal Development,
one for Portal testing & Production?
    Currently,mostly we use 2 port
    1)port 7777, for Login Page/ChangePssword/SingleSignOff (in infs)
    2)port 7778,for portal home,our portlets (in apps).
How can we make it to be duplicated in One Server only?
    Thanks.

... another question would be why not upgrade those old Forms & Reports to the newest release 10.1.2.0.2 and use the latest Application Server to run them with?
Release 6i and 1.0.2.2 is as you know desupported.

  • License for testing and production systems

    Hi Experts
Can any one help me out on implementing license in my B1 System.
According to our contract we have licensed following user types:
    User Type
    Licensed
    AddOn Access License    25
    Professional User                5
Software Development Kit - Development Version 20
We have Test/development system in one hardware and Production system on different hardware. Please advice me how to request/allocate license for my test/development system and production system.
We tried creating a Test System in SAP Market place and requested license for test system. While requesting license for production system, it is found that the license is exceeded. In other words, developent system license also counted.
Please advice me on the best practices of B1 license implementation.
    Thanks and regards
    Ajith G

    Hi,
Our customer wants to Keep the production data secure. Developers and consultants should not have the access to it.
Then you have only two options:
1.Either you should maintain a standalone b1 server for the developers and consultants to test their solutions and scenarios.
2.Otherwise you can create users in sql studio for accessing only the test database.
So that as per your requirement
All configurations and sample data will be kept in a test environment where developers and consultants can do their work.Once everything is correct Admin will do the transfer to production.
Note:New users can be created in the sql studio under Databases-><Company Db>->Security->Users, Rt.click new user

    OS:Solaris10.
I am trying to create a replica of one of my Production DB for test envoirment...

    sql>connect /as sysdba
    sql>alter system enable restricted session;
    sql>alter database backup controlfile to trace;
    Shutting down the Primary Instance....
    sql>shutdown immediate
Moving the Datafiles and Logfiles to the respective Partitions of the New Test Database
Moving the init<oracle_sid>.ora files to new DB partition
Connecting to the sqlplus in the newdb and executing the create database execution script...
Now the Test Database is created and is in mounted Mode
    SQL> select open_mode from v$database;

  • Creating a folder for testing

    Hi all,
This is a suggestion rather than a question.
I sometimes need a folder with a nice small well defined set of data for testing.
Rather than have to go to the DA and ask them to add a table to the Oracle database and then add it to the Business Area I found a simpler solution:
In Discoverer Administrator Create a Custom Folder.
    Add SQL something like:
SELECT 'A' AS Type, 1 AS Days, 10 AS DailyCost FROM DUAL
    UNION SELECT 'A',2,20 FROM DUAL
    UNION SELECT 'B',3,50 FROM DUAL
    UNION SELECT 'B',4,100 FROM DUAL
This will provide a table with three fields: Type, Days & DailyCost.
    And four records.
Save this and give it a sensible name such as TestTable and it's then available
    for running tests.
It's not too complex to create a series of Excel formulae which will take a table of values and create the SQL to be used to create a custom folder.
This is a fairly quick (if hackish) way of getting a table of values into the business area until such time as it can be put into the database by the DA.
    In Excel
For a table with field names in cells A1..C1 and records in A2..C5 use the following formulae in Cells E2..E5 and then copy these four cells to get the SQL!
    ="SELECT "&IF(ISTEXT(A2),"'"&A2&"'",A2&"")&" AS "&A1&","&IF(ISTEXT(B2),"'"&B2&"'",B2&"")&" AS "&B1&","&IF(ISTEXT(C2),"'"&C2&"'",C2&"")&" AS "&C1& " FROM DUAL"
    ="UNION SELECT "&IF(ISTEXT(A3),"'"&A3&"'",A3&"")&","&IF(ISTEXT(B3),"'"&B3&"'",B3&"")&","&IF(ISTEXT(C3),"'"&C3&"'",C3&"")& " FROM DUAL"
    ="UNION SELECT "&IF(ISTEXT(A4),"'"&A4&"'",A4&"")&","&IF(ISTEXT(B4),"'"&B4&"'",B4&"")&","&IF(ISTEXT(C4),"'"&C4&"'",C4&"")& " FROM DUAL"
    ="UNION SELECT "&IF(ISTEXT(A5),"'"&A5&"'",A5&"")&","&IF(ISTEXT(B5),"'"&B5&"'",B5&"")&","&IF(ISTEXT(C5),"'"&C5&"'",C5&"")& " FROM DUAL"
    Yours nerdily
    Suhada

    Hi Suhada
Like Rod, I'm a fellow nerd and am always on the lookout for cool ways to expand and work on data inside Discoverer.
With your permission, I'd like to take this idea and make a posting on my blog (http://learndiscoverer.blogspot.com/). I'll give you credit for the idea but thought it might be nice if I could show it working with screenshots of Excel and inside both Discoverer Admin and Plus.
If you don't object, please send me ([email protected]) the Excel spreadhsheet that you used for your test and I'll see if I can't get something up within the next week or so.
    Best wishes
    Michael

  • TIP 04: Duplicating a Database in 10g by Joel Pèrez

    Hi OTN Readers!
Everyday I get connection on Internet and one of the first issues that
I do is to open the OTN main page to look for any new article or any
new news about the Oracle Technology. After I open the main page of
OTN Forums and I check what answers I can write to help some people
to work with the Oracle Technology and I decided to begin to write some
threads to help DBAs and Developers to learn the new features of 10g.

Note: two important issues to denote in the sentence above is the word "SET" instead of "REUSE" and the controlfiles must be recreated in RESETLOG mode because the database must be opened in RESETLOG mode.
If you use the word "REUSE" instead of "SET" the opening of the database is going to request recovery of the datafile of the tablespace system.
So, apply this to recreate the controlfiles:
    - Start the service in windows for the database COPY2
    - Get connection through SQL*Plus as system
    - Shut down the database with shutdown abort
    - Start the database up in nomount stage

  • ISSUE Sharepoint 2013 databases for reporting services on the second server SQL 2012

    Hello,
I have server A: Operating system windows 2012 standard, SQL server 2012 standard
instance: Sharepoint contains data for sharepint
instance: Reporting should be contain databases for reporting
    Server B:
Windows server 2012 standard contains installation Sharepoint 2013
Sharepoint works (without reporting services), it is OK - databases are located on server A:
    My issue is:
When I have installed reporting services on server B, I have already installed SQL server 2012 on server B, it works.
I am able to create report in report builder adn place it in to sharepoint.
But I would like to use only one full SQL machine on server A:
When I reconfigure repoting settings on server A in central administration - manage service aplications,
On the SQL server A in instance reporting , there is automatically created databases. It is no problem.
But the first difference is, when I want to manage service aplication for reporting  in
Provision Subscriptions and Alerts, there is information
SQL Server Agent state cannot be determined
When I want to create report in report builder, I have issue:
server A-7380mw016\reporting it means server A with full SQL server:
The Test of connection was successful
Then I have clicked test connection
I have recieved this screen with fail: Logon faild for user NT Authority\anonymous logon
My account belongs to SQL admin on server A (A-7380mw016\reporting) I do not know it is not possible to create report, when it is possible to test connection in the first step and in the second step, there is problem...
    Please, can somebody help me?

    Hi,
Since you are getting an Anonymous Logon error, it appears there may be a problem passing your credentials to the SQL Server Agent Service. This would indicate a Kerberos issue. See this thread for details:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/sharepoint/en-US/46b7c773-6a77-435d-b471-cb9a6ec41c43/has-anyone-else-upgraded-reporting-services-to-denali-2012

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/video/Video/hh858469
    Tips from the video:
We are connecting to Reporting services using Kerberos when using Reporting Services in SharePoint integrated mode
For the account using reporting services, we just need a dummy SPN. We go to Attribute editor tab in AD for RS account. And then we will be enabled with Delegation tab.
In Delegation tab. I we are using claims to windows token, we need to use "Trust this user for delegation to specified services only"
There you have 2 options: "Use Kerberos only": It means I only want to delegate in the situation where the service that is doing the delegation actually has the Kerberos ticket to start with
"Use any authentication protocol" When we need protocol transition (like from NTLM to claims for intra farm communication)
We need to delegate this to SQL server.

  • How to use the mirrored and log shipped secondary database for update or insert operations

    Hi,
I am doing a DR Test where I need to test the mirrored and log shipped secondary database but without stopping the mirroring or log shipping procedures. Is there a way to get the data out of mirrored and log shipped database to another database for update
    or insert operations?
Database snapshot can be used only for mirrored database but updates cannot be done. Also the secondary database of log shipping cannot used for database snapshot. Any ideas of how this can be implemented?
    Thanks,
    Preetha

Hmm in this case I think you need Merge Replication otherwise it breaks down the purpose of DR...again in that case..

My how to notes are here :

Please note these were written not to create but to recover a standby, you still have to set up forced logging and the net80 in advance.

  • How to connect to database for all the reports FR

    Hi,
I have developed 100 reports in production client, for testing purpose I have moved to
test client. How can I connect to database for all the reports at a time?
    Regards
    Taruni

    Hi Taruni,
You can connect to the database connection for all the reports through workspace in HFM.
Connect to HFM Workspace-->click on Explore option-->and click on Tools-->click on Data Base Connection Manager and change the respective connections from Production Instance to Test Instance with required information, and than you will be able to connect to Test database for all the reports at a time.
