DVD Player does not play a DVD

My DVD player can play commercial DVD without any problem.
I use a DVD Video Recorder to burn a DVD. I finalised it confirmed it can be played in my Windows PC PowerDVD version 6 OEM edition.
When I put it in my PBG4 superdrive, the DVD Player could be launched automatically. However, it says "Supported Disc Not Available". Checked Disc Region is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and my Drive is in Region 3 with 4 changes left.
Any idea?
PowerBook G4 1.5GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   DVD Player App version 4.6.5, Framework version 4.6.6

If you burned a DVD-RW, the DVD Player might not recognize it. In this case, use a different brand of DVD-RW or a DVD-R disk.

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of VLC Player. I had no idea what VLC is but it seems a safe (and free) feature. I googled it and downloaded latest version for XP. All DVDs now play perfectly! Still no joy with other players but who cares. Many thanks, full marks. Owen

I recently bought HBO DVDs and it does not play in my Apple system. I have an error that states, "this format is not supported" what is wrong? or codec issues?

Without going into a huge tirate about motive behind this from different companies. Just download this player and it should work for you.

  • Dvd player does not play dvd disc

I've had this brand new iMac for almost 10 months.  Every time I put in a dvd, click on play and "Supported disc not available" would be shown on the screen. It's very frustrated.  But one time I took it to an Apple store to check, an Apple worker put in a Disney's dvd and it worked fine.  I brought it home and have tried to play mine.  Again, it says the same thing.  I cannot even eject the disc form that small dvd player window.  I can only eject it from the key board.  I have "Window XP" loaded in this iMac.  I wonder if the Window XP has created problem for it.  Any suggestion to help solve this probem will be greatly appreciated.  (Certainly, I can bring it back to Apple store again with my disc but it's a big job because the nearest store is hour and half away.)
(The operating Syetem below I chose is not necessary correct.  All I know is it's OS X)

Is XP running under Boot Camp?
    See if this plays them...

  • DVD drive does not play some DVDs properly

    Hi,
My Macbook was purchased in 2007; So it is a bit old. I haven't used the DVD drive very often.
I bought two new DVDs from Amazon recently. However, when I played them in my Macbook using DVD Player, the disk pauses and skips very often, making it impossible to watch the DVD. In addition, the Player would display the "Skip over damaged data" warning.
I thought it was a problem with the software (DVD Player); so I installed the VLC player. Problems occurred as well. Disk would pause and then simply stop (the screen closes).
I thought that perhaps it was the problem with the Amazon DVD disk. So I played some other DVDs in my Macbook, with both DVD Player and VLC Player. There was NO problem at all with the other DVDs.
Then my conclusion was that the Amazon DVD was faulty. I requested a replacement, which they sent to me promptly within a day.
However, the same problem occured. The replacement DVD would not play properly in either DVD Player or VLC Player in my Macbook. It would pause and skip very frequenntly.
Now I began to suspect that maybe the Optical Drive was faulty. So I brought the DVD to my school and tried to play it in two computers: one PC (with VLC); the other Mac (DVD Player). To my surprise, the DVD played flawlessly in those two computers.
Now my conclusion is that the optical drive of my Macbook is faulty.
However, after doing some preliminary research on the internet, I find that replacing the internal optical drive is a difficult process. The alternative seems to be buying an external drive. But there seems to be concern about booting the computer (when the need arises) from an external optical drive.
    Questions:
    1. Is my conclusion justified? (That I have a faulty optical DVD drive)
    2. If the optical drive is faulty, then why do some DVDs play with no problem in my Macbook?
    3. Would you recommend replacing the internal drive or puchasing an external optical drive? What are the advantages and disadvantages to both?
    Thanks a lot!

Thanks again. I went ahead and deleted the DVD Player folder and the plist file.
The result is that it appeared to temporarily improve the playback of the DVD. For the first two hours, the DVD paused considerably less and each pause was of a relatively short duration. There was much less skipping. So the playback was almost tolerable, if I lower my standards.
However, after two hours, it reverted to its old ways. The pauses and skipping became so frequent and long (as before) to make the DVD simply unwatchable.
I don't know what to make of this.

  • DVD player does not play  my burned DVD

    Hi all
I burned an imovie onto DVD and my Panasonic 5 disk console doesn't read it. It's about 5 years old. I was told that some older DVD players can't read the newer DVD-Rs? What to do?
How can I bypass this or do I need to buy a new player?
    Thanks

Does the DVD play in other players or on other computers?
Try the following basic trouble shooting steps that are mentioned on many posts.
    Save as a disk image
Burn disk image using Disk Utility at a slower speed (2x or 4x)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006
    Use DVD-R (not +/-RW or +R)
    Use Maxcell or Verbatim disks

I have had my mac book pro for about a year and a half and suddenly my dvd player will not play DVDs and i can not play alot of things on full screen. Does anybody know how i can fix this?

This could be several things, but let's get the obvious ones out of the way, first:
    1. Judging from your text, there's no problem with anything stuck in the mechanism; it's more an issue of no being to put in a disk. In other words, you're sure that there isn't a disk stuck in your MBP. (That happens a lot for all computers.)
    2. Go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility, and repair the disk. This should take under 10 minutes.
    3. Perform the procedure outlined here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?
    4. After you're done, leave a message here as to the status of the repair.

  • HT2499 I have a new MacBook Pro with OS X Lion 10.7.4. The DVD player does not have a feature to store film clips. Why? This is useful for my work and I had it on my older computer? Why the loss of capacity?

I have a new MacBook Pro with OS X Lion 10.7.4. The DVD player does not have a feature to store film clips. Why? This is useful for my work and I had it on my older computer? Why the loss of capacity?

I cannot recall the DVD player ever being a place to "store" videos - it is simply an app to play videos.
If your machine is new, then iMovie should be included as the "shrunk" version of iLife is included with Lion (iMovie, Garageband, and iPhoto). However, iMovie is not a place to store videos either - it is a video editor. You import your clips and edit them in order to then burn to a DVD or share via a social media site.
Have you considered simply dragging the clips to your folder "Movies"? That would be a great place to just store them (please be aware that videos are usually large files, so keep your hard drive space in mind so you keep a minimum free and available for the OS to operate properly):

  • DVD Player does not launch

When I insert DVD's, even commercial ones, into my MacBook Pro, DVD Player does not automatically launch even though I checked "When a disc is inserted, start playing disc" in DVD Player's preferences. DVD Player works, however, when I manually launch it after inserting a disc. Also, sometimes the disc drive will not load the disk completely until I press "Eject". Any thoughts?

In System Preferences/CDs & DVDs have you set "When you insert a video DVD" to 'Open DVD Player' ?

  • Dvd player does not work after Leopard upgrade

I installed Leopard, had to upgrade because my printer died and no printers now work with Tiger.  Since the upgrade, my DVD player does not work.  I have problems burning some cd's too.  Is this a known issue?  What is the fix?

I have read a couple of complaints like that, but not sure it's widespread.
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
If that does NOT help, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
If that does NOT help then I suspect the optical drive or media itself, or possibly just needs a cleaning CD run on it.
