DVD-R speed - an issue?  (simple question)

(I am about to upgrade to OS 10.5, so want to back up all my docs first).
I was going to buy some DVD-Rs to do this. However, I see that many of the DVDs in the stores are rated faster than the drive in my iMac. These DVDs bear a warning that they may be incompatible with slower drives. Please excuse my ignorance, but is this an issue?
I've got the white Intel 2 GHZ slot loading iMac. Can't even remember what speed the DVD drive is (8x rings a bell)

Hi GGG and welcome to the forums!
These DVDs bear a warning that they may be incompatible with slower drives. Please excuse my ignorance, but is this an issue?
No, not in my opinion.
Using 16x DVD media is fine - in fact it is difficult to buy any other - but there is a consensus in the Apple Support Forums that a slower burn is a better burn and that the most reliable brands are Verbatim, Maxell and Fuji, all DVD-R, burned at 2x or 4x (slow burns are better burns!). I always use Toast for burning.
I generally use Verbatim and when I can't get those, Fuji, and have never had a coaster from either.
Plenty of coasters in the early days from Sony, TDK and a few others.
The term "Best" means the fastest speed that the drive told Toast it can write to a specific disc. The drive's firmware and info on the disc decide what speed burns are available. When you press the speed setting button in Toast (after inserting a disc) you'll likely see some speeds in italics and some in bold face. The ones in bold face are supported by that media on that drive. The fastest one is what Toast calls Best.
Audio CDs in particular should be burned at the lowest supported speed.
Verification is a good indicator the disc is burned okay. However, other DVD players can still have problems with the disc. Media problems with various drives is not uncommon. Slower burning may reduce the chance of those problems, and is one of the reasons why RW (read/write) media is always rated slower than DVD-R.
There are some interesting facts here:
http://www.osta.org/technology/dvdqa/dvdqa4.htm and here:
http://www.osta.org/technology/dvdqa/dvdqa4.htm
But many will tell you that the 'slower burn is best' theory is outdated. Who really knows? At the end of the day, if your home-made DVD was verified by Toast and will play anywhere on anybody's DVD player, then that is the result we are all after!

  • This might be a simple question.   On those sites that do not differentiate between models when on the internet I.e. Facebook when after your comment and you cannot hit "enter" on an iPad for examp. And speed is slow to connect.  What is = to post?

This might be a simple question. On those sites that do not differentiate between CRT, laptop, tablet etc. such as an iPad Mini and using the Facebook site fir example when going to post a comment and you do not have a enter button on the IPad and the speed is slow how do you get your comments to post if we do not have a enter button?

  • Load Balancing Directory Servers with Access Manager - Simple questions

    Hi.
We are in the process of configuring 2 Access Manager instances (servers) accessing the same logical LDAP repository (comprising physically of two Directory Servers working together with Multi-Master Replication configured and tested) For doing this, we are following guide number 819-6258.
The guide uses BigIP load balancer for load balancing the directory servers. However, we intend to use Directory Proxy Server. Since we faced some (unresolved) issues last time that we used DPS, there are some simple questions that I would be very grateful to have answers to:
    1. The guide, in section 3.2.10 (To configure Access Manager 1 with the Directory Server load balancer), talks about making changes at 4 places, and replacing the existing entry (hostname and port) with the load balancer's hostname and port (assuming that the load balancer has already been configured). It says that changes need not be made on Access Manager 2 since the LDAPs are in replication, and hence changes will be replicated at all places. However, the guide also states that changes have to be made in two files, namely AMConfig.properties, and the serverconfig.xml file. But these changes will not be reflected on Access Manager 2, since these files are local on each machine.
Question 1. Do changes have to be made in AMConfig.properties and serverconfig.xml files on the other machine hosting Access Manager 2?
Question 2: What is the purpose of putting these values here? Specifically, what is achieved by specifying the Directory server host and port in AMConfig.properties, as well as in serverconfig.xml?
Question 3. In the HTTP console, there is the option of specifying multiple primary LDAP servers, as well as multiple secondary LDAP servers. What is the purpose of these? Are secondary servers attempted when none of the list in the primary list are accessible? Also, if there are multiple entries in the primary server list, are they accessed in a round robin fashion (hereby providing rudimentary load balancing), or are other servers accessed only when the one mentioned first is not reachable etc.?
    2. Since I do not have a load balancer setup yet, I tried the following deviation to the above, which, according to me, should have worked. If viewed in the HTTP console, LDAP / Membership / MSISDN and Policy configuration all pointed to the DS on host 1. When I changed all these to point to the directory server on host 2 (and made AMConfig.properties and serverconfig.xml on host 1 point to DS of host 2 as well), things should have worked fine, but apparently Access manager 1 could not be started. Error from Webserver:

In effect, AM on 1 did not start. On rolling back the changes, things again worked like previously.
Will be really grateful for any help / insight / experience on dealing with the above.
    Thanks!

Update to the above, incase anyone is reading:
We setup a similar setup in Windows, and it worked. Here is a detailed account of what was done:
    1. Host 1: Start installer, install automatically, chose Directory server, Directory Administration server, Directory Proxy server, Web server, Access Manager.
All installed, and worked fine. (AMConfig.properties, serverconfig.xml, and the info in LDAP service, all pointed to HOST1:389)
    2. Host 2: Start installer, install automatically, chose Directory server, Directory Administration server, Directory Proxy server, Web server, Access Manager.
All installed, and worked fine. (AMConfig.properties, serverconfig.xml, and the info in LDAP service, all pointed to HOST2:389)
    3. Host 1: Started replication. Set to Master
    4. Host 2: Started replication. Set to Master
    5. Host 1: Setup replication agreement to Host 2
    6. Host 2: Setup replication agreement to Host 1
    7. Initiated the remote replica from Host 1 ----> Host 2
Note that since default installation uses abc.....xyz as the encryption key, setting this to same was not an issue.
    9. Started webserver for Host 1 and logged into AM as amadmin.
    10. Added Host 2 FQDN in DNS Aliases / Realms
    11. Added http://HOST2_FQDN:80 in the Platform server (instance) list.
    12. Started Host 2 webserver. Logged in AM on Host 2, things worked fine.
At this stage, note the following:
    a) Host 1:
    AMConfig.properties file has
    com.iplanet.am.directory.host=host1_FQDN
    and
    com.iplanet.am.directory.port=389
    serverconfig.xml has:
    <Server name="Server1" host="host1_FQDN" port="389" type="SIMPLE" />
    b) Host 2:
    AMConfig.properties file has
    com.iplanet.am.directory.host=host2_FQDN
    and
    com.iplanet.am.directory.port=389
    serverconfig.xml has:
    <Server name="Server1" host="host2_FQDN" port="389" type="SIMPLE" />
    c) If one logs into AM, and checks LDAP servers for LDAP / Policy Configuration / Membership etc services, they all contain Host2_FQDN:389 (which makes sense, since replica 2 was initialized from 1)
    Returning back to the configuations:
    13. On Host 1, login into the Admin server console of the Directory server. Navigate to the DPS, and confgure the following:
    a) Network Group
    b) LDAP servers
    c) Load Balancing
    d) Change Group
    e) Action on-bind
    f) Allow all actions (permit modification / deletion etc.).
    g) any other configuations required - Am willing to give detailed steps if someone needs them to help me / themselves! :)
So now, we have DPS configured and running on Host1:489, and distributing load to DS1 and DS2 on a 50:50 basis.
    14. Now, log into AM on Host 1, and instead of Host1_fqdn:389 (for DS) in the following places, specify Host1_fqdn:489 (for the DPS)--
    LDAP Authentication
    MSISDN server
    Membership Service
    Policy configuation.
Verified that this propagated to the Policy Configuration service and the LDAP authentication service that are already registered with the default organization.
    15. Log out of AM. Following the documentation, modify directory.host and directory.port in AMConfig.properties to point to Host 1_FQDN and 489 respectively. Make this change in AMConfig.properties of both Host 1 as well as 2.
    16. Edit serverconfig.xml on both hosts, and instead of they pointing to their local directory servers, point both to host1_FQDN:489
    17. When you start the webserver, it will refuse to start. Will spew errors such as:

    Success!
The server https-host1_FQDN has started up.
The server infact, didn't start up (nothing even listening on 58080).
However, if AMConfig.properties is left as it originally was, and only serverconfig.xml files were changed as mentioned above, web servers started fine, and things worked all okay. (Alright, except for some glitches when viewed in /amconsole. If /amserver/console is accessed, all is good. Can this mean that all is still not well? I am not sure).
So far so good. Now comes the sad part. When the same is done on Solaris 9, things dont work. You continue to get the above error, OR the following error, and the web server will refuse to start:
Differences in Solaris and Windows are as follows:
    1. Windows hosts have 1 IP and hostname. Solaris hosts have 3 IPs and hostnames (for DS, DPS, and webserver).
No other difference from an architectural perspective.
Any help / insight on why the above is not working (and why the hell does the documentation seem so sketchy / insecure / incorrect).
    Thanks a bunch!

  • Need a simple answer for simple question???

simple question... what is the best way to export my fce movie and burn it on idvd for the best quality for genaral use ... sd..4x3 ratio tv.. lots of ken burn effects on photos... lots of sd video... ???
not so simple answer... i have read manuals.. apple discussions.. etc etc my eyes are blurry.. i have been exporting out of fce to qk time movie, then import to idvd and burn..
i get lots of wavy or jitter when doing kens burn effects on photos.. i have been told that 1 field must be missing.. and its better to take the qk time movie convert it again making sure hi quality is checked(movie properties 720 x 480) and self contained movie, then import to imovie ver 5.02 which has better codecs then to idvd ... an apple store tech said..
then another apple store tech said...dv pro or dv stream or interlaced or on and on and on
its not 16x9, or for the web or anything but simply burn it and give it to my grandma to play in a standard dvd player.. best quality.. period.. i know it won't any better than my source video but the wavy photos bother me..
    help

The Apple store tech told you garbage. The quality will be the same. It's using the same QuickTime engine. There may be a difference because going through iMovie will go through a file conversion and the picture might be softened a little, which will mitigated this flicker you see.
The wavy photos can be a lot of things, most likely due to the nature of the images themselves and the movements you've done on them. What often works on still images is to apply a one pixel vertical motion blur in an application like Photoshop or Elements. This helps to reduce interlace flicker on motion when the material is brought into a video editing application.

  • A very very very simple question

    Hi guys,
I have a very simple question and standard but I cant find anywhere...
I have two dateTime variables, i need to calculate difference between this dates in days, thats it.
I tried all functions and tried without success a Java Embed task but I couldnt retrieve this objects as java.util.Date so I couldnt calculate exactly the difference in days like this pure java code:
    (dataVencimento.getTime() - dataReferencia.getTime()) / 86400000L)
    can you help me this?

    Hi Jose
Just see if these alternate approaches works. I know there may be lot like this and you may be lucky to find out simple out of box solution itself. If you want to solve this issue and move ahead, gives these approaches a shot.
    1. Create a very simple standalone WebService that takes 2 input date elements (can be of Date type or String type. If string type, convert to date in your java code). Create a simple operation like getDaysBetween(firstDate, secondDate). In the generated webservice impl class, use the java code apis (refer earlier link for usage), and get the difference. Return this value. NOW, invoke this WebService in your BPEL Process, and pass your 2 inputs (if the bpel payload elemetns are date object or string objects of date), and get output, and then use this output in your continuing bpel process.
    2. This approach, I did a long back. When we insert any expression using XPath, in that editor window on bottom right side, we see many categories and for each category we see list of functions we can use, like for String, we can use concat etc. I vaguely remember reading somewhere, that we can add our own custom functions also in this section. So explore this direction and see if you can add your own function and then use that fucntion with your 2 input dates.
I have not given solution to your problem, but may be these directions can help you move ahead. Or something along these lines.
    Thanks

Not necessarily. I have one (in the "Pro" line) without any such problem.
With many drives, if you completely erase and reformat it, without loading any of the software that comes with it, those problems are unlikely.
Some will respond to the +Put the hard disk(s) to sleep . . .+ option in System Preferences > Energy Saver, some don't.
Some WDs, however, come with "spin down" programming that's near-impossible to remove.
Well it was certainly the case on 3 FreeAgent drives that I know of, and it was a well known problem that Seagate did nothing about. The drives would spin-down after a short time and cause a fairly long delay anytime drive access was needed. This was a hardware issue and nothing to do with the disk format. seagate provided drive manager software for Windows but not Mac.
I suppose the issue has been resolved in later drives but the point is not to assume that any old external drive is suitable for use with OS X.

  • A few simple questions

Hi, the company I work for will soon be doing some work with OS X server and in an effort to familiarise myself with the software I have set it up at my home on an old blue and white G3 (sadly the best hardware I have to spare right now).
I would like to configure the server to share the internet, serve web pages and an FTP server and a few other basic tasks, but I keep running into trouble, and would appreciate some feedback on these simple questions. My setup is as follows:
Sympatico connection via ethernet DSL modem (server connects via PPPoE)
2nd NIC on server connected to a 5 port switch
Powermac G5 and Windows XP workstations (currently only testing with XP box)
I have been unable to get the server to share the internet connection, the DHCP server does not seem to be serving IPs (although if I map a static address it works) but either way I cannot browse.
    My questions are:
Will this setup work with the server connecting via PPPoE or does it require a static IP from my ISP?
Do I have to configure DNS or can I just enter my ISP's DNS IPs instead?
Is there anyway to return the server configuration to default settings? I tried using Gateway Setup Assistant which didn't work, and I'm worried that it's dropped in some settings I'm not aware of.
I've done some reading on here and while I understand it's easier to let a $50 Dlink router handle NAT I'd like to understand this so I can better advise my client.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Toby

It is entirely possible to run what you describe, but it's hard to tell what state it's in now (and therefore what changes are needed to make it work).
In general, the steps you should follow are:
    1) Get the public network side working so the server can talk to the outside world.
    2) Get the private network working between the server and the clients.
    3) Run gateway assistant, or manually configure the various parts using Server Admin.
The system shouldn't care whether you're using PPPoE, DHCP, static addresses, or even dialup for the public link, so that's not an issue, and neither should DNS.
Other things to check include the firewall on the server (turn it off during this setup to make sure it's not just a firewall configuration issue).
Also, make sure you're using different subnets on the public and private networks, e.g. don't try to have the server hand out public IP addresses to the clients - that won't work.
Check that your basic network connectivity (e.g. ping) works between the various systems on the network. if the clients can't ping the gateway system then they're not going to go anywhere.

  • 10.5.0 DVD and 8800GT installation issues/Retail dvds up to 10.5.4 yet?

I know this is a known issue if you upgrade you graphics card to the 8800GT retail 10.5.0 dvd will lockup your system. my question is when is Apple going to update the retail DVD to something useful like 10.5.4. I have already contacted apple and they where helpful and they sent me a replacement 10.5 dvd but it was still the base version of 10.5.0. I just want to be able to reinstall my os without having to reinstall my old 1900xt card. I just wish we could slipstream a dvd like windows xp and vista.

    Hiya,
I AM running the 8800 and have had no issues at all (luck?). Saying that, the first thing, I have done after install, used the comboupdate to 10.5.4.
Can you not get as far as software update? Can you use an old graphics card and install Leopard, run software update, THEN put in your 8800? Only a thought.
Hope you can sort it. (There IS a graphics update out: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/leopardgraphicsupdate10.html , though, but you need at least 10.5.2.)

  • Audigy 4 and Reciever/Amp simple question

    Hi all,
Despite inundating myself with what is probably TOO much information from the knowledge base and forum, I could really do with an answer to what is essentially a pretty simple question....
I recently got an Audigy 4 sound card and external io hub. Lovely bit of kit. Very nice. I only really use it to watch the odd dvd and listen to music with WMP9.
    I have a Sony multi-channel receiver/amp with 5. speakers attached.
The amp has multiple digital connections - all either optical or co-axial. (and individual 5. analogue too)
These currently accept optical links from my dvd player and xbox. Lovely.
So, I would prefer to use the digital connections (nice and easy cable approach as with xbox) but I think I'll only get 2 channels when I play dvd... So what is the best way to connect the two....
    Thanks
    Glen

The thing about that kind of digital connection is that involves compressing 5. channels into the space of 2, using proprietary encodings. This makes sense in terms of storage space savings (i.e. more room on that DVD for special features), or if bandwidth is constrained (i.e. broadcast TV can fit 5. into the space originally designed for stereo), but the only way it makes any kind of sense for getting audio a few feet from the soundcard to a receiver or speaker system is because nothing more direct ends up being available. The result is that your xbox needs a high-powered chip to make something very (and unnecessarily) complex seem simple. Your Audigy does not have that; it does not have the ability to make that kind of 5. audio for your receiver to then decode.
Your Audigy does, in fact, have the ability to output 5. digitally, in the digital space that 6 full-range channels need, using a single cable; but your receiver, like virtually all of such, doesn't accept it. CL digital speaker systems have a "Digital DIN" input which uses it, but your receiver does not have a "Digital DIN" input, nor any equivalent of that. Even if it did, there's still a problem, because it's muted for DVD-Audio's higher-resolution formats, purely as an effort to prevent consumers access to high-resolution digital audio signals that are not encoded, for copy-protection reasons.
Because DVD 5. soundtracks are pre-encoded on the DVD, you don't need the Audigy to be able to encode. All that is needed is to get the soundtrack from the DVD to your receiver as is. The Audigy can do that. As the other post indicates, the keys are to tell the DVD player software to output digital, and to tell the Audigy not to decode.
Under the covers, that actually uses the Audigy as a 2-channel soundcard, and the rest of its channels are "wasted." None of its real multichannel capabilities can actually be used with a "digital" connection like that. However, if all you do is watch DVD's and listen to stereo audio files, especially if your receiver has features to simulate full surround from stereo, you may not care.
Personally, my strong preference is for the multichannel analog hookup, although I might set up both types so I could compare the sound of the receiver's decoding with the Audigy's decoding.
Things you can't do when using an external decoder hookup:
. Use the soundcard to adjust volume while listening to DD/DTS multichannel soundtracks (though it's best to use the receiver to adjust volume all the time, actually).
    2. Hear any other sound sources while listening to DD/DTS multichannel soundtracks.
    3. Get multichannel audio from PC games.
    4. Get multichannel upmixing using CL's CMSS feature.

  • Simple question. Since apple has extinguished iDVD Are there any other Software programs that can produce the end product iDVD did?

There are many a thousands of people who are producingvideos on completed DVDs. As an amateur videographer using iMovie first nowusing Final Cut pro to produce completed ready to distribute DVDs, I find ithard to believe at the meeting you mentioned anyone with common sense wouldhave explained the scenario above. I do not know if the can be answered here in the format buthere it goes!!

The question for anyone who knows is: Since apple has extinguished iDVD Are there any other Software programs that can produce the end product iDVD did?
I appreciate your input but it realy does not answer the question. iDVD will soon not be able to work with newer versions of Macs as it has been left behind by Apple!
    Once again:
It doesn't seem there are any programs that takes off from where iDVD left off.

Imovie cannot do this. More importantly imovie cannot save the project to Video_TS folders like iDVD did.

  • SIMPLE QUESTION: LYNC 2010 -- AVAYA CS1000 DIRECT SIP: IS THAT POSSIBLE? PLEASE HELP!

    Hello,
I would like to ask really simple question here: is that possible to establish (configure, setup, create, make etc.) a direct SIP connection between LYNC 2010 and AVAYA CS1000 PBX. On one side I have Lync 2010 Standard Edition acting as Front-End Server
with co-located Mediation Server. On another side I have AVAYA CS1000 IP PBX Version 7.0. We are trying to make this happen for 1 full year with no luck. The issue is that we do not manage our PBX (external company does).
Here is what we are basically trying to achieve:
All I want is that basically LYNC user (phone # 5678) can dial PBX user (phone # 1234) and talk. Also PBX user can call LYNC user and they can talk. I'm pretty sure that all I'm asking is very simple thing. I don't expect magic to happen (e.g. when one user
calls another user the world will change). All I want is to be able to call between LYNC and PBX users so they can talk.
Sorry for repeating again but here is my simple question: can direct SIP (or call it SIP trunk if this is the right word) be established so LYNC and PBX users can call each other and talk. Whatever protocol is (G.711, G.722 etc.) I will be happy.
If you can let me know I would very much appreciate this. I'm sure I'm not alone in this world and many companies out there using AVAYA CS1000 and deployed LYNC and probably have the same question so it may be helpful to other people as well.
    Thanks!

Hi Thamara for reply. I can see where you are going, but the challenge here is that I have found many threads including in this forums from people who successfully connected CS1000 PBX to Lync 2010 for two-way calling, and even dual-forking (which I cannot
even dream about at this time).
If you go to AVAYA WEB site, you can find official AVAYA compatibility MATRIX that is available here:
    http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=avaya%20compatibility%20matrix%20lync&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBwQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fsupport.avaya.com%2Fcss%2FP8%2Fdocuments%2F100135385&ei=v3-5TsXVKMLX0QGHpdSkCA&usg=AFQjCNG6cmW5izdOASMuW34b8iK0vWnwuw
According to this document, only CS1000 version 7.5 supports Lync 2010 and only via ACE - starting first quarter of 2011 (which is done deal by now) - see below for details. The problem is that I have a hard time to understand the meaning of the word "Supported".
I do not really need full support, all I want is to be able to call in both directions using 2 distinct numbers (e.g. 4 digits extensions) that are configured in both systems.
Another thing is this ACE. Apparently it is a big monster software that you need to buy and pay big bucks and lots of configuration just to make it working. But I'm not even sure what will work. We do have one-way calling (from Lync to PBX) - it just does
not work other way, and I have no idea why. I'm not sure if this cannot be working, or because it was not setup right. As I mentioned before we have no access and clue about IP PBX - this is one of my issue here. Withoul knowledge how it works on PBX side
I cannot be sure what is causing this.
So I was wondering if anybody in this world was able to connect CS1000 PBX to Lync and perform two-way calling using two systems.
    Thanks!

    Supported (via ACE) - 1Q11

  • Simple question re invoking non-WebLogic web services

I have a very simple question that I haven't been able to resolve elsewhere.
I need to invoke 3rd-party SOAP interfaces from my WebLogic 6.1 client EJB. All
the Bea documentation I've found refers to invoking "WebLogic Web Services" and
speaks of downloading the client.jar -- however, in my case it's not a "WebLogic
    Web Service" I'm invoking, it's a non-WebLogic web service.
Does WebLogic 6.1's WebServiceProxy (or other tool) allow this? Or must I use
some other SOAP tool such as Apache Axis in this case?
    Thanks.

Could this interopability problem have something to do with a problem
    I'm experiencing on 61.sp3?
I have an EJB that accesses SOAP services on a Tomcat server. The SOAP
service sends back a SOAP exception which is correct in what I am asking
in to do. However, the weblogic app server is returning a SOAP
exception to my EJB rather than passing the SOAP exception to the API
that I am using to make my SOAP calls.
Has anyone seen something like this?

The javadocs for the WebServiceProxy class (from BEA's site)

Note that your best bet, if possible, is to use the JAX-RPC
