DVD SP, Compressor - where's MPEG-2 ?

I thought when I bought DVD Studio Pro, it included Compressor and MPEG-2 compression.
I have DVDSP 3.0.2 and Compressor 1.2.1, but my QT7 does not play MPEG-2 streams...

William,
Some place in the DVD SP package you should have had the MPEG-2 playback component for Quicktime to install. This gives the Quicktime player the ability to play back MPEG-2 video. See http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/ for more information on the playback component.
You may, or may not, get audio playback from your clips. It doesn't give you the ability to convert other QT files to MPG-2 (that's what Compressor is for).

  • Is there a way to import a DVD into iMovie where it can be re-worked and then saved as a new DVD?

I have converted several VHS video tapes to DVD's and want to work with them in iPhoto to create better versions.
How do I import the DVD files into iMovie?

This tip will show you how to import your home movie on DVD into iMovie 11 for editing. It will not work on commercial, copy-protected DVDs. (Ripping commercial DVDs is against the Terms of Use of the Apple Discussions).
DVDs are encoded by iDVD into MPEG2, which iMovie cannot edit. So you need to convert the DVD into a codec that iMovie can edit. For highest quality, I recommend that you convert the DVD to Apple Intermediate Codec. There is a free tool called MPEG Streamclip that will do this. You will also need to install the Apple QuickTIme MPEG2 Playback Component.
    Here are the details.
    1) Download and install the Apple MPEG2 QuickTime Component ($20) - available online from Apple.
    2) Download and install MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 (free).
    3) Start MPEG Streamclip
    4) Insert your DVD into your Mac. If DVD Player or Front Row starts automatically, quit those.
    5) Open a Finder window. Navigate to the DVD.
    6) Drag the Video_TS folder from your DVD and drop it into MPEG Streamclip.
    7) If MPEG Streamclip offers to fix timecode breaks, say yes.
    8) Use FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME to convert the files to Apple Intermediate Codec (or h.264 if you prefer)
    9) Optional steps.
9a) Optional: You can deinterlace your footage in this step, if you like. If you don't know which is best, try a short clip both ways. I usually do not deinterlace.
9b) Optional: If you know the date and or time of the footage, name your file
    clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss
(let mpeg streamclip provide the extension). This will provide metadata that iMovie will use to put the event in the right year and month.
9c) Optional: If you don't want to make one huge clip out of your DVD, you can make smaller clips by using MPEG Streamclip. Move the cursor to the "in" point of the clip, and press i. Move the cursor to the "Out" point of the clip, and press o. Then do steps 8 through 10 and repeat until you have done this for all clips you want.
    10) Save the resulting file in a place where you can find it, like your Desktop.
    11) Open iMovie.
    12) In iMovie, choose FILE/IMPORT/Movies... and choose the file you saved in steps 8, 9, 10.
    13) iMovie will generate thumbnails and you can edit.

  • Can you tell Compressor where to use a higher bitrate?

I have a 2 hour project, the last twenty minutes of it being "behind the scenes" footage shot on DV.
This 20 minutes of the program can be lower than the average 5.0Mbps that the 2 hour DVD setting uses.
And I have several short sections with fast moving multilayer graphics which I would like to have the best quality possible.
Is there a way to tell Compressor where quality is more important and where it's not?
I am using Final Cut Studio 2.
    Thanks for your help.

...but don't expect even close to the access speeds you would get with a hard drive!  That's fine of course since you should use it for example, as an emergency boot drive, or transporting stuff to and from other locations, or backups for selected stuff.

I need to install software on a computer without a dvd drive.  Where can I find the download for the student edition?

Perhaps you can copy it using a different computer, from the disk to a USB key.
However, external DVD drives are cheap and in my view essential.

  • No sound when creating dvd using compressor 4

I have burned my first FCPX dvd using Compressor.  The video came out well though there are no audio files.  What am I not doing?

You probably didn't include the Dolby settings for your target when you were creating your Compressor job . If you use the Compressor batch templates, or if you share to DVD directly from FCX, they will do that for you automatically.

  • Compressing for DVD without Compressor?

I am trying to export to MPEG 2 for DVD from FCP6 but I can't use Compressor. It's crashing and I haven't figured out why yet.
In the meantime, is there a process for exporting sequences to Mpeg 2 right from Final Cut? thanks

Actually, I can't even get DVDSP to let me import the files into the asset bin. It says there is no compatibility. That's where I get hung-up.
What exactly does "says there is no compatibility" mean? Do you get an error message and if so, then you need to say exactly what it says. Are you dragging it into the Assets tab or going via the Import Asset command? Or are BOTH not working? As others have already asked: what are your export settings in FCP, specifically *_which codec are you using_*?
    cheers

  • Can i have more than one file on a dvd using compressor 4

im new to compressor and mac in general- im trying to use it to put multiple files onto one dvd- help! thanks!

Afraid that sharing to DVD is limited to a single source file. As a work-around, you could always put multiple finished sequences in FCPX on a single storyline – perhaps separated by short gaps. Export the project and bring the movie into Compressor. Set chapter markers where the gaps are and encode your DVD. Should work reasonable well.
If you have an older version of iLife, you can use iDVD.Otherwise I would say get Toast.  (Boxed sets of iLife are still available and if you do some searching you should be able to locate.)
    Good luck.

  • Compressor: HDV to MPEG 2 / 2006 vs. 2012??

A client has come back for a new master of her film, shot in HDV in 2006 - mastered to HDV, then to MPEG2 via Compressor.
I'm wondering if anything has happened to Compressor since 2006 ... or to the MPEG2 codec ... maybe this is impossible, but has there been any improvement in the codec since then?  Might I be able to get a better new MPEG2 by redoing the HDV to MPEG2?
    All ears,
    Ben

    Russ,
    Very helpful, thank you.
I'll experiment with the VBR vs. CBR.  I'm actually okay with the HDV to MPEG-2 Compressor conversion, it's quite decent.  It's the ugly artefacting menus that Studio Pro produces.  I am going to see if I can find a trial version of Premier with Encore ... just to compare.  It could be that the 'science' of the click throughs to the scenes just automatically produce artefacting.  But then again ... most of the DVD's I've rented for years, don't have the problem, nice clean menus.
I can see things to do in future.  I'm actually cutting a feature doc right now, shot over five years ... the first three with HDV, then with XDCam.  Once I get a rough cut (keeping the two formats apart) I'm going to convert everything to ProRes. I've been doing this for a couple of years to go through Color, which I've fallen in love with.
What, pray tell, is an AVCHD disk?  Which will play in most Blu Ray players?  THAT I'd be very curious about.
I've put your notes in my 'special notebook' as I'm sure I'll find myself here again in the not so distant future.  I've got drives full of old HDV projects that clients often want remastered.  And I will report back to this discussion if I figure out how to produce the nice clean menus I see in rented DVD's ... using DVD SP, or whatever.
Very much appreciated Russ, thank you kindly...

  • DVD Studio/Compressor replace Toast?

    Hey all:
Just got Final Cut Studio, figuring out what each program can do. I realize Compressor and DVD Studio Pro are optimized for getting QuickTime files ready for other formats, but can they perform Toast tasks like compressing VIDEO_TS ripped from MacTheRipper and burning onto a DVD-R? What I'm doing isn't illegal or anything: the movie I'm shooting has a scene where a DVD of Woody Allen's 'Manhattan' gets snapped in two. I own the movie and will snap that in half, but I want to make a copy so I still have 'Manhattan' for my viewing pleasure.
Anyway, I know I can do what I want with Toast, I'm just trying to figure out the limits of these Studio apps.
Thanks in advance for the help!
    Michael

It's an odd movie that doesn't have enough spare budget to buy a second copy of a DVD!
To answer your question, DVDSP has a Format option, and if you select that you can point to the Video_TS folder you want to burn. It ought to work with the ripped Video_TS you have.
BTW, don't programs that rip a commercial DVD so that it can burn onto a DVD-R effectively halve the data rate? Your DVD-R copy may not look as good as the original.

  • How to create chaptered DVD in Compressor 4?

I bought FCPX and Compressor because all my Kool-aid drinking Mac friends said you have to have this to edit (former Avid user). Learning as I go and I am very impressed with the FCPX software from where I came from.
However, I don't see anyway to make chaptered menus in Compressor 4? Really??? I know DVDs are not the future but they are sure the present right now. Can someone please tell me what they currently use to get a project off the timeline and into a chaptered DVD that I can duplicate and hand to people.....
    Thanks!
    Justin

You can add chapter markers in either Final Cut (hit m twice to set a marker and to bring up the dialog for type of markers and text entry) Or in Compressor's preview window. ( also hit m ).
Both applications do a good job of making quality disks. But don't get your hopes up about the menus. They're very basic. Also, if you want to choose thumbnails for your menu be forewarned that they may not work as expected.

  • DVD Production/Compressor/Archiving - Format?

I've spent a significant amount of time in the last few days on the boards, trying to come up with an answer for this... And while I'm much more educated, I haven't found someone with the exact answer.
The quick background... We are new to FCP and DVDSP by about 4 months. We are a public school channel, producing video about the good things going on in the district. Our features are mostly short, 2-3 mins, with some longer applications. We had been using an avid, playing in real time to a Canopus Amber card in another PC. The file this would make would be a MPEG-2 that we send to our MVP-2000 to air. We were also able to use this file to burn to DVD using Nero (NOT my choice, but it was easy, and all we had), and for archival purposes
With our new G5, we are starting to use it for DVD produciton. DVD studio Pro is MUCH better than Nero.
Yet, I'm having a hard time grasping what I need to do to make the video look good. From FCP, I went to Compressor, and chose the "Best Quality, DVD 90 mins" setting. This gave my settings VBR two pass, Avg. 6.2, Max 7.7, Best motion estimation. The result? Crap. A lot of artifacting.
This seems pretty consistent with what I'm reading in other user's experiences. So I tried some settings, and the best one I found was using compressor to do a One Pass, 7.2 bit rate, GOP 7, Best motion estimation.
Yet, this setting is only video, then I have another for audio (obviously...) So I have two files in the end. Not a big deal for DVD production. And they are relatively small, both files totaling about 130 MB for three-ish mins.
I also tried to avoid compressor, using Export-Quicktime Movie in Final Cut. Then, in DVD SP, telling the encoder to use One pass, 7.2, Best motion estimation. This setting also appeared to work well. And it is nice because I have a quicktime movie file that I can use for multiple things. I can send it to air, I can send it to DVD and DVD SP encodes it properly, AND I can archive the file to disc, AND if I drop it right back into FCP, it's right there, no rendering or anything. Yet, the file is nearly 3 times the size, just under 400MB. Obviously because it's uncompressed.
SO........ My question becomes... Is there anyone out there with a similar workflow? I like having the quicktime file, simply because there is then ONE file that I have to deal with, and ONE version can do multiple things. Yet, the file size is rather large, and if we do anything longer than a few minutes, that's gonna be one big file...
Suggestions on how to export from FCP into a format that will work for these different applications?
Thanks everyone... Hope I've explained my situation thoroughly enough....

Right about the separate tracks. The nice thing is about the QT file, is that DVD SP separates that out for me, and I kinda like that.
Good to know about DVD SP having a tendancy to crash. I haven't seen it do this yet, but good to know it's out there.
Yea, I see there is a lot more control in compressor than DVD SP. Yet, if I can do a simple QT movie and have DVD SP encode it, it helps my workflow a bit, only having one step to encode for archive, DVD, and air.
So let me ask this... The reason I like having one file to "do it all" is because it seems to make it easy. Encoding with the canopus before, we would have that MPEG file on our PC, and we could archive those to CD every so often. If someone comes back to us in a few months and says "Hey, can I get a DVD of that Show Choir performance", I have most likely ditched the media from my drive. So all I have to do is open my database to find the CD it's on, get that disc, and import the file back onto the computer, and burn using Nero, and it's finished.
Keep in mind that we don't burn a copy of every performance/story to it's own DVD. If we did that, and someone wanted a copy in 3 months, we could just dub that disc. Yet, we don't do that because we will get requests for certain stories to be on the same disc.
We also archive everything we do to full size DV CAM tapes. So, yes, we could re-import the finsihed video when someone wants a copy of something, but why do that if we can already have a digital file (Our MPEG file) on a CD already.
So, I suppose my question becomes... If I want to stay using the same workflow of having one file to work with, do I just have to get used to the fact that my QT files will be huge? Or is there a way in File-Export-Using QT conversion that I can shrink that file by half or two thirds and not loose a lot of quality?
    Hope that makes sense. Thanks!

  • HELP! AC3 Files from compressor (FCS2) in MPEG Streamclip!

I'm having a problem - I'm creating 5.1 AC3 audio files with Soundtrack Pro/Compressor. The files are playing back fine, but when I import them into MPEG Streamclip, it is not recognized. Normal (downloaded AC3 files from Dolby, etc) work fine - it must be a setting I am using, but I have tried everything. Has anyone ever had this problem? I've got a project due that I need to be able to stitch together MPG video with AC3 5.1 audio into one MPG2. So far, streamclip is all I have found to do this...I am using Final Cut Studio 2. Any help is SO appreciated!!

Aaah, I wish I could help! I have exactly the same problem! I was going to post about it, but since there's this workaround, I didn't want to take up bandwidth with a problem that was not a total showstopper.
Indeed. I have stopped doing what I used to do before. Before, I used to select "All" in compressor - the files generated were the video, the aiff, and the ac3. Well after burning a few coasters through DVDSP 4.1 where there was picture but no sound, I realized that I needed to drag the aiff file to compressor again, and use that - at that point everything is fine. So, right now, my workflow is to export just the video from FCP through compressor, let it encode. Then export the aiff separately and encode it to a3 in compressor, then import the video and ac3 to DVDSP for good results. In short, no more exporting "All" from FCP through compressor, it's a waste of time.
But as to why, I have no idea, and I'm eager to hear what folks have to say! Anyhow, just letting you know you are not alone. Btw. my set up is: FCP 4.5 HD, compressor 2.1 and DVDSP 4.1.0... what's yours?

  • Grey screen on final burned DVD, used Compressor and DVD Studio Pro 4

Trying to create a standard dvd from a 2 hour and 8 minute 720x480 mov file.  I have used compressor to create a mpeg2 as well as an ac3 audio file.  After looking at other posts, I feel that what i've done in compressor is ready to be imported into DVD Studio Pro.  I changed my preferences in DVD Studio Pro to support my mpeg2 and ac3 files coming in from compressor.  After I import, they import very quickly.  The playhead lets me scrub through the video fine, but when I go to the simulator, I get a grey screen.
I'm trying to output this file onto a dual layered Standard DVD.  The fact that my video was originally an HD mp4, converted into .mov  should not matter once it's converted into an mpeg2, correct?  Mpeg2 is the standard DVD format.
I've also messed with the markers in DVD Studio Pro because I've read that the Automatic settings for the "break layer point" are not that "Automatic" I've seen other posters saying to add markers in the gap where the DVD laser should switch from layer to layer, but still my output burned DVD and simulator remain a grey screen!. Please help, I've referred to many posts and I believe that I've done everything right except maybe one or two things. So Close! Help! Thanks!

  • HT4775 I made a DVD in compressor and even though the disk is finished, I still see the active job.  How do I clear the job off the active jobs list?

A few weeks ago, I launched compressor via FCPX to make a DVD.  Everything went fine.  The disc burned and ejected from my DVD burner, but the job is still listed under Active Jobs.  Nothing I've tried will make it go away.  Is there any way to clear that list?

Go into your Home library and open Application Support and then Compressor. Open the History sub folder and within that, open V4. Scroll down to find the job and drag it to the trash.
