Any advice on the the best way to put a few dvds on my itunes/ipad?

iTunes/iPads do not do DVDs.
DVD RIpping is illegal in most countries therefore cannot be discussed in these forums.

I have the same problem , i've converted my videos to mp4 , by using different programmes and tried to open them in itunes but it didnt .
Some people suggested the following although it didnt help me , it might help you
One suggested to paste the videos that you want in automatically add to itune ( go to your music folder m then click on itunes , then itunes media , and you will find it there )
Others suggested to o to the ontrol panal , then programmes and features m then lick on quick time (. Or itunes) then Change then repair

If the digital copies are compatible with iTunes and iOS devices, there will be some sort of redemption code or other link that will obtain the movie from the iTunes Store, at which point it will automatically be in iTunes.
Note, though, that there are digital copies that are not compatible with iTunes (ones that use the Ultraviolet protection scheme, for instance). Also, many DVDs and Blu-Ray disks offer digital copies only for a limited time after the movie is first released, so the offer may have expired by now.

If you're referring to commercial and hence copy-protected video DVDs, breaking the copy protection, which would be necessary to copy the videos from the DVD and convert them, is illegal in the US (and other countries) and hence Apple explicitly forbids such posts. We're therefore not allowed to discuss it here. Some DVDs and Blu-Ray movies come with a "digital copy" that allows you to download a copy of the movie for use on computers and portable devices. You might see if any of the DVDs you have come with such a feature. Walmart/Vudu also has a service that basically gives you a digital copy of a DVD you already own. See:

Other DVD/Blu-Ray vendors may now or soon have similar services.
If these are home movies that you or someone has burned to DVD and hence are not copy-protected, Handbrake (freeware) that Rudegar mentioned is one of the more popular converters. Once converted, you just drag the movie into the iTunes window on your computer.

lkrupp is correct - except it's more like comparing apples to oranges.
The two devices run on totally different operating systems so you cant share the software between the the Mac and the iPad. It equates to trying to install MS Office for Mac on a PC. You may already own the software, but you don't own a compaitible version for the other machine.
You will have to purchase the Apple iWorks apps for the iPad if you want to use it on the device. Apple doesn't actually package it as a suite so you have to buy Pages, Numbers and Keynote separately for the iPad.

Actually, as the owner of the DVD, you are permitted to make one copy. You can use Handbrake to make an iPad compatible version of the DVD movie, then move it into the Videos section of iTunes. From there, you can sync it with your iPad.

If it's a non-commercial DVD(like a home movie), you can use something like Handbrake to convert it to mp4 which you can then import onto the iPad via iTunes. If it's a commercial DVD, your options are to purchase a digital copy or subscribe to a streaming service that you can use to watch it.

Says its a blank dvd and it is not!

my friend has a pc and burned a dvd for me with jpgs and raw photo files. when i put the dvd in my imac it says that it is blank and won't read anything on it. i put it into my husband's pc laptop to check the dvd and the images come right up. why won't my imac recognize the contents of the dvd and how can i get it to? If you downloaded them on your computer's iTunes then they should have gone into the Movies part of your iTunes library, if on a device (iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch) then into the Videos app - they haven't appeared there ?
If you downloaded on your PC and they don't show in the Movies section then you could try searching for them by name (or part of their name) via windows explorer and see if that finds them. Or if you downloaded them on a device and they aren't in the Videos app then have you got a film age rating set in Settings > General > Restrictions that is hiding them, and if not can you find them via the device's spotlight search screen (swipe your first homescreen to the right) ?

Handbrake will work on unencrypted DVDs. It's a very good program with presets for iPods and Apple TV. Don't know if there's a preset for the iPad yet.
Discussions about copying commercial, encrypted DVDs aren't permitted as per the terms of use of the forum.
