Dynamic text - newbie question

hello,
i'm reviewing a lesson on Lynda.com. The subject is loading
dynamic text from an external text file. Every time I try to access
the dynamic text i've placed on the stage, I get an error: "Cannot
access a property or method of a null object reference."
I have two layers. Display and Actions. (Actions at the top.)
The display layer has a keyframe in frame 1. on it, is a large
instance of dynamic text. The instance name I've given it is
"external_txt".
Actions has a keyframe. In this frame i've got Lynda's action
script, which is:

--I get the error about the null object reference. For some
reason I can not get my AS to set a property to the dynamic text on
my stage.
my publish settings are AS 3.0.

Dynamic Text - Basic Question

I am using Dreamweaver MX and ASP.Net to create a data driven
website. I have created a database connection and set-up a dataset
with the relevant query, which returns a table of information. I
now want to simply insert some dynamic text that references
specific data items on different rows.
By inserting Dynamic Text through Dreamweaver I can only seem
to return the information in row 1 of a specific column (i.e. the
first data item). How do I specify which row the data should be
taken from? The code I have at the moment for inserting the dynamic
text is shown below:

This returns the first item in the CampaignName column of the
dsCampaigns dataset. How do I return the item on row 3?

Dynamic sql newbie question

I am trying to do an insert statement dynamically inside a trigger. I want to concatenate the string 'IRFFFF' with substr(:new.stvterm_code,1,4).
Example: :new.stvterm_code is 200509... I only want 'IRFFFF2005'.
Here is my code....please help. The problem lies with the substr function and the :new operator.

Newb needs help with dynamic text

Hi Everyone,
I don't like being a newb - but that's how it is...
I'm trying to create a multipage registration form that
allows uses to register products.
The first page asks for name etc, and on the second page I
want it to say "Welcome "+username "!" - that sort of thing...
The problem is I can't get it to keep the dynamic text values
accross the pages.
I can get it to repeat the input on the first page with this
code:
_root.firstname_txt.onChanged = function() {
_root.firstname_repeat.text="Hello
"+_root.firstname_txt.text;
However when I call it on the second page it is undefined:
second_repeat.text="hello "+_root.firstnamt_txt.text;
trace (_root.second_repeat.text);
I'm sure this is something simple and I'm just a programming
dunce...

if your textfield (_root.firstname_repeat) doesn't exist on
the 2nd frame, its text property will be undefined.
to remedy, either extend your textfield's existance into the
frames needed or use a variable to store its text property (in your
onChanged handler) and use that variable to retrieve the value you
need.

Newbie question: ""dynamic"" casting

Is there any way to do this type of casting just in one line? I mean, I just want to cast object1 to the class it is instanceof. If it is instance of A1, I want to be casted to A1, if it is A2 to A2, etc...

Dynamic Text Area with no scrollbars question

Hello All,
I have an application that has a dynamic text area that pulls in XML content and i would like to have the text area grow, rather than use a scrollbar and i am wondering if anyone has done this or can point me in the right direction? I have dont quite a few searches and only find examples on how to do this in AS3, and i am using AS2 and CS3.

If you are using AS2, then if you manually stretch the width of the textfield to what you want it to be, you can use the following to have it automatically rezise itself height-wise to fit whatever text you assign to it, where tfield is whatever instance name you assign to the textfield in the example code...
tfield.autoSize = "left";
tfield.text = "whatever your xml file text is";

InDesign or Acrobat (newbie question)

Hi,
I tried posting this in the LiveCycle Designer forum, but I think it's a bit too much of a newbie question:
Once in a blue moon when I'm at work, someone will ask me if I can add text fields to a PDF form so that they can easily type onto it and print it out. I've always done that directly in Acrobat (on the few occasions that it's been requested from me). But I was curious about Adobe LiveCycle since it came with CS3, so I played around with it a couple of days ago. I added the text fields in LiveCycle this time, and it seems to have worked fine. Which is the better program for this kind of task? I'm not 100% clear on the *main* purposes of either program or how they compare. If anyone wanted to give me a clue about it, I'd appreciate it!

They come to the same problem in different ways. For a simple task
they may seem pretty much the same. Some differences:
* A form made in Acrobat is a PDF with form fields stuck on top; it
remains a normal PDF in every other way. Forms are almost always made
by preparing an existing PDF, then adding form fields.
* A form made in Designer is barely a PDF. It's a wrapper round an XML
file. You can no longer edit it in Acrobat, ever, even for the most
simple things. PDF files are imported and converted (sometimes with
loss of quality or features), or forms are made from scratch.
* Acrobat form fields are fixed size.
* Designer form layout can be dynamic.

Linking a class to a dynamic text field to load XML data.

Hi,
I'm quite new to ActionScript and would be grateful for any help here.
I want to load text into a dynamic text field (called 'about_tab') using a class depending on the language selected (by clicking on a flag icon) by the user.
I managed to get this to work when the ActionScript was written directly in the timeline, but am having problems with doing the same thing via a class.

Here's one of my XML files (the other is the same except "About" is written in German):

When I run it, it returns my trace statements that the class ChangeLang and the function xmlLoaded are running, but no text appears in the dynamic text field (I should/want to see the word 'About'). I get this error message:
1120: Access of undefined property about_tab
The problem, I'm guessing, is in the part in red in my code. I think I need to target the text field in the display list by creating a reference to it. If so, could someonw point out how I do this, or perhaps a tutorial that would help. I've tried adding the word stage (i.e.,stage.about_tab.text = substance.about_lbl; ) but it still doesn't connect. I guess there's something really simple I'm missing, so I apologize if this comes across as a stupid question

I'm also new to AS3 and I've just started using external classes and I think I know what you should do to put your code to work.
Instead of using the text field you created inside your flash file, why don't you use the "TextField" class to create an instance of this object? It's the exact same thing as when you create and instantiate a new text field inside Flash.
First, import flash.text.*; (includes classes like TextField, TextFieldAutoSize, TextFormat, TextFormatAlign, etc)
Than you just have to create a var like
public var about_tab : TextField;
or
public var about_tab : TextField = new TextField();
then, to adjust the properties of this tab you use dotsyntax as if it where on your stage like:
about_tab.x = 50; about_tab.alpha = .5; etc...
you can even create a function to "config your textField"

 about_tab = new TextField(); //you only need this line if you

Newbie Question about FM 8 and Acrobat Pro 9

Hello:
I have some dcouments that I've written in FM v8.0p277. I print them to PDF so that I can have a copy to include on a CD and I also print some hard copies.
My newbie question is whether there is a way to create a PDF for hard copy where I mainitain the colors in photos and figures but that the text that is hyperlinked doesn't appear as blue. I want to keep the links live within the soft copy. Is there something I can change within Frame or with Acrobat?

How comes the text is blue in the first place? I guess the cross-reference formats use some character format which makes them blue? There are many options:
Temporarily change the color definition for the color used in the cross-reference format to black.
Temporarily change the character format to not use that color.
Temporarily change the cross-reference definition to not used that character format.
Whichever method you choose, I would create a separate document with the changed format setting and import those format into your book, create the PDF and then import the same format from the official template.

Create a Link using Dynamic Text and Capture Variable

I am building a dynamic website using Dreamweaver CS5 with Coldfusion 9
Currently I have created a dynamic text table. The table is created by querying the Invoice table and displays the all the customers Invoices. The columns Include Invoice #, Date, Amount Paid, BalanceRemaining, Due Date. So basically lists all the invoices I have applied to the unique customer. It is pulled up using a session variable I created from the login page.
My question is this I want to make the "Invoice #" linked so when you click on it it goes to a new page and performs a new query which retrieves infro related to that specific invoice such as Services Rendered, Service Description, Date, Price, Total. I was able to create a link to the Invoice # but I am stuck trying to figure out how to capture the Unique Invoice # and apply it to the new query. Is this possible if so how?

Now keep in mind I am speaking strictly from a web and SQL standpoint as I have no experience with coldfusion.
If you are able to create the link to the Invoice, I am perceiving this as the following:

If your page is setup like that then you already have the data stored in the browser request with the GET method. In PHP the equivalent is the $_GET array. I am assuming ColdFusion has a similar array to work with forms. Then on your following page you obviously need to check that the visitor came from the prior page with the proper permissions to ensure that someone doesn't get the address page.php?invoice=### and just guesses through and views all invoices if they are not supposed to. Then your query would look something like the following:
SELECT * FROM invoice_table WHERE invoice_number = $_GET['invoice']
Remember this in written in PHP so yours should be a similar equivalent.
Hopefully this helps a little to get you going in the right direction.

Setting dynamic text not working in AS2

I'm working on a complex file given to me by another designer
and I'm having a problem with being able to set dynamic text.
Basically, I just want to set the text of a nested instance (e.g.,
with an instance called foo and a instance inside foo called bar,
I'm using foo.bar.text = "test".) This works beautifully and as
expected in a test file. But when I move the symbols and code to
the other designer's file, nothing happens. I.e., the dynamic text
is blank.
I feel confident that I'm not making any errors (I'm using
tested code and symbols!), but I cannot think what else could be
causing the error. Mine is the only ActionScript in the entire
file.
Are there bugs with dynamic text? Could this have to do with
font substitution? I did change the fonts to Arial and "device
fonts" without effect.

My understanding of Flash is definitely a mixed bag. I have

of start with the assumption that I'm dealing with something
quirky.

Help with code for score-keeping with dynamic text box

Hi All,
I'm having an actionscript 2.0 problem with keeping score.
I have a dynamic text box with a variable called score.
I have the following action code for that variable:
_root.score = 0;
For the correct answer button I have this action:
_root.score = Number (score) +10;
This works fine to increase the score by 10 for each correct answer.
The problem is that I can't get an if statement to work for when the score reaches 150 to gotoAndPlay a certain frame. I've tried various syntax, I've tried it on the action for a button and an action for the timeline with:
onRelease = function () {
(My learning game is set up to allow for users to answer up to four extra questions to reach the score of 150).
Nothing works. Any suggestions please?

Dynamic text box and minus variable?

I have a text box with dynamic text set to display p variable but when the variable goes < 0 it only displays a '-'.
im using:
onClipEvent (enterFrame) {
p = my_object._x;
How can I correct this? Also another question with 'my_object._x' it returns the x coord relative to the movie clip it is in. How do I get the position relative to the 0,0 (top left corner)?
I've been learning Flash for 2 days so sorry if the questions sound simple. I have tried googling these.

Connecting a CSS doc to an XML file, in a dynamic text field in Flash

Hi all,
I am trying to connect a CSS file such that it applies it
self to the content of an XML file, viewed inside a dynamic text
field. So far I have managed to gather the code that "calls" the
contents of the XML file and also the code that calls the CSS file.
However, when I test the flash movie I get "undefined" instead of
the actual copy.

hope you could help me connect everything together.
