DynDNS or No-IP service with Server?

I just received my Mac mini Snow Leopard Server and I am contemplating also being able to access the server from outside the house as well as from inside.
If I use No-IP or DynDNS service, will this work?
Or should I purchase a static IP address from my ISP? What happens when I change the ISP?
How does DynDNS compare to No-IP (I have experience with the latter but only with an iMac in a non-server environment). It worked fine for me (that was the free version of No-IP). This time I would like to know how it works with the Snow Server...
Thanks much,
Kenneth

Camelot,
Thanks for the much needed education! I completely understand the reverse lookup business ... but as I had said, and with reference to mail only, this shortcoming could be overcome by the other services that DynDNS provides such as MailHop (or the No-IP service at the link I mentioned above). So that will effectively solve that problem.
My next question then is, would I then have to address this reverse DNS lookup issues for each of the other services that Mac OS X SL provides, on an individual basis? What if I am running an iCal server and someone needs to connect from the outside? (I don't know at which address on the server the iCal service would be available, have never done it before).
You also mention " ... Mail relaying through some other mail server can help, but you'll need to determine how much, if any, the lack of reverse DNS matters to you. "
A. How do I determine as to how much, if any, the lack of reverse DNS matters to me? Let's say in my case, that the mail issue has been addressed by MailHop, beyond that and am repeating the question I had posed earlier *"The question in brief is, is there ANY feature, advantage or merit of a traditional static IP address from my ISP that a third party Dynamic DNS service can't match either directly with a single service or with add on services?, when one considers the cost issue, is it worth or is there any advantage of going for a static IP instead of a much more economical dynamic dns service?"*
Again, thanks for taking the time to educate me! really appreciate it and thanks for putting up with my ignorant questions :o) It's a genuine desire to learn!

  • Outlook 2007 on terminal services with server 2008 repeatedly crashes

    I updated my clients server 2008 to SP2 from SP1 and it kills Outlook. I previously (a month ago) did a complete uninstall of SP2 along with all updates that were installed that day, re-installed Office 2007 Standard and it worked just fine.
    I have turned off DEP, ran some registry items that ive found online and spent hours on this!  The server is working great as SP2 fixed a lot of "weird" issues. BUT Outlook and ONLY Outlook is crashing whenever you start the program.  It
    will not even let me try and start a new message, reply, etc.  It stops at send/receive and usually at 66%

    Hi All,
    I need to find some tutorial on
    "Implementing SQL Server Reporting Services with a Java EE Application"
    for my j2EE application.
    Until now i have searched a lot of sites but have not any thing related to this topic.
    I am using apache axis along with SQL Server Report Manager for creating the sql server reports.
    I have done upto :
    Creating the webservice with the help of report manager.
    Now i want to connect it through my j2EE application and want to retrieve some data from that web service.
    I have got stuck on the following BOLD lines in my code .
    code:
    public CatalogItem[] getData(String res, String searchStr) throws RemoteException     {
                  ReportingService2005Soap port = null;
                  ReportingService2005Locator loc = new ReportingService2005Locator();

  • Use parameters in SQL Server reporting services with sharepoint lists

    I want to make report from sharepoint 2010 list and forms library in sql server reporting services.
    but also want to apply parameters.
    I tried but parameters but it is not working.
    How I can apply sharepoint lists parameters in sql server reporting services ?
    How to run or view report of sharepoint lists or form library in sqlserver reporting services with required parameters?

    Hi John,
    When we use SharePoint list as datasource in SSRS it has two method to add parameter. Suppose we have a dataset (DataSet1) get data from SharePoint list. Please refer to the methods below.
    Method 1: We can add parameter in the Query Designer dialog box to add parameter.
    Click “Add Filter” icon in the “Applied filters” dialog box in Query Designer.
    Select the corresponding field (Title), fill with specific conditions, and select Parameter option in the end of the row.
    Create a dataset (DataSet2) fill with Title field.
    Double click the parameter we create above, set the available values from DataSet2 field Title.
    (Note: In the situation, we are get the single-value parameter.)
    Method 2: It is a general method to add parameter in SSRS report.
     Create another dataset (DataSet2) in the report fill with Title field.
    Add a parameter (Title) get available values from DataSet2 Title field.
    Add filter in the DataSet1.
    (Note: This method, we can configure multi-values parameter.)

  • Troble configuring Hyperion Shared Services with SQL Server 2005

    I recently installed SQL server (SQL SERVER 2005) in my machine and then am trying to install Hyperion (9.3.1) products. I started with Shared services. It was installed successfully. Problem is occuring when am trying to configure Shared service with SQL database using Hyperion Configuration utility (9.3.1)
    The error which is popping up is
    Unable to connect to the database for the product Hyperion Shared Services.
    Things which I tried from my end
    1. Made sure TCP IP Protocol was enabled in SQL server configuration server.
    2. hypuser was created in SQl server.
    3. hypdb was created in SQL server.
    4. Was having dynamic IP address so install Loopback adapter to obtain Static IP address and port.
    5. Port and IP address was correct.
    Let me know where I am going wrong.
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Finally got it fixed firewall settings needed to be change : This document helped me a lot to troubleshoot the issue
    An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)
    This problem may occur when SQL Server 2005 is not configured to accept incoming local and remote connections, which is disabled by default in SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition and also SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition. To solve the connection forbidden problem, SQL Server 2005 needs to configure to allow incoming local and remote connections.
    Firstly, ensure that SQL Server 2005 is configured properly to allow incoming connections on the instance of database server, else enable and turn on the local and remote connections setting.
    Click Start button, then go to Programs or All Programs, then select Microsoft SQL Server 2005, followed by Configuration Tools. Click and run the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration.
    On the “SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration” page, click Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections.
    On the “Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections” page, expand Database Engine tree, click Remote Connections.
    Select Local and remote connections, or Local connections only which applicable only if there is no remote system tries to connect to the SQL Server, useful when you just trying to connect and authenticate with the server after installing.
    Select the appropriate protocol to enable to local and/or remote connections environment. To ensure maximum compatibility, select Using both TCP/IP and named pipes.
    Click Apply button when done.
    Click OK button when prompted with the message saying that “Changes to Connection Settings will not take effect until you restart the Database Engine service.”
    On the “Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections” page, expand Database Engine, then click Service.
    Click Stop button to stop the SQL Server service.
    Wait until the MSSQLSERVER service stops, and then click Start button to restart the MSSQLSERVER service.
    Secondly, SQL Server Browser service has to be enabled to allow for local and remote connections if SQL Server 2005 is running by using an instance name and users are not using a specific TCP/IP port number in the connection string.
    On the “Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections” page, click SQL Server Browser.
    Select Automatic as the Startup type to start SQL Server Browser service automatically every time system starts.
    Click Apply button.
    Click on Start button to start the service immediately.
    Click OK button.
    Finally, if remote computer needs to connect and access SQL Server, an exceptions in Windows Firewall included in Windows XP SP2 (Service Pack 2), Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista needs to be created. If you’re using third-party firewall system, the exception rules also needed to be created to allow external remote connections to the SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server Browser Service to communicate through the firewall, else connections will be blocked. Consult the firewall manual for more details. Each instance of SQL Server 2005 must have its own exception, together with an exclusion for SQL Server Browser service.
    SQL Server 2005 uses an instance ID as part of the path when you install its program files. To create an exception for each instance of SQL Server, you must identify the correct instance ID. To obtain an instance ID, follow these steps:
    Click Start button, then go to Programs or All Programs, then select Microsoft SQL Server 2005, followed by Configuration Tools. Click and run the SQL Server Configuration Manager.
    In “SQL Server Configuration Manager”, click the SQL Server Browser service in the right pane, right-click the instance name in the main window, and then click Properties.
    On the “SQL Server Browser Properties” page, click the Advanced tab, locate the instance ID in the property list.
    Click OK button.
    Then create an exception for SQL Server 2005 in Windows Firewall.
    Click on Start button, the click on Run and type firewall.cpl, and then click OK. For Windows Vista, type firewall.cpl in Start Search box and press Enter key, then click on Allow a program through Windows Firewall link on left tasks pane.
    In “Windows Firewall”, click the Exceptions tab, and then click Add Program.
    In the “Add a Program” window, click Browse button.
    Click the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Binn\sqlservr.exe executable program, click Open button. MSSQL.1 with is a placeholder for the instance ID that is obtained from previous procedure. Note that the path may be different depending on where SQL Server 2005 is installed.
    Click OK button.
    Repeat steps 1 through 5 for each instance of SQL Server 2005 that needs an exception.
    For SQL Server Browser service, locate the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Shared\sqlbrowser.exe executable program, and click Open button.
    Click OK button.

  • Strange error protecting BPEL service with WSM server agent

    I'm trying to protect a BPEL service with OWSM (SOA Suite 10.1.3.3 MLR#19). Everything looks fine as far as I can see, but when the service is called with WSM active it always fails with internal server error. There are no errors in the logs (BPEL logs, OPMN logs, OWSM logs, ...) except the following in the Apache access logs:
    "POST /policymanager/services/RegistrationService HTTP/1.0" 200 525
    I can connect to /policymanager/services/RegistrationService with a browser, it shows a message saying it is an Axis web service. Without WSM the BPEL service works fine.
    I have tried to fix this for two full days now and nothing I have tried makes a difference. Any suggestions for what I should do in order to solve the issue or at least get more data on what the root cause could be?
    -Erik
    Edit: There were two issues. The built-in test page doesn't work, when invoked with a real external client it works better. In addition the properties for file-based policies seem to be used even when the online check has been enabled (so they cannot be omitted/blank) and a restart is required to make the changes bite.

    Did you resolve this issue ? We are having same issue with one of our BPEL process ........ any help would be highly appreciated .....

  • Possible to write non HTTP WEB services with an Application Server?

    Is it possible to write services with the backend of an application server in JavaEE 5? Like a server listening for mails? Where does one find information about that? Books only discuss web (html/http) services that you can build in an AS...

    Hi Dugu,
    Can you give the link to the specific article and the version of JDeveloper you are using to help you further?
    One thing to keep in mind is that the accessors must be public - using package access (no modifier) is not going to work.
    Hope this helps,

  • Lost connection with server

    For about two days now, the bbm application has refused to launch. It has been writing lost connection with server....can any one please help! It's really urgent

    Hi and Welcome to the Community!
    With a strong carrier network signal (e.g., not merely WiFi), I suggest the following steps, in order, even if they seem redundant to what you have already tried (step should result in a message coming to your BB...please wait for that before proceeding to the next step):
    1) Register HRT
    KB00510 How to register a BlackBerry smartphone with the wireless network
    Please wait for one "registration" message to arrive
    2) Reboot
    Pre-BB10 Devices ONLY. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes.
    BB10 Devices. Hold the top button down until the counter reaches zero. Wait for the device to be fully shut down (e.g., nothing at all displayed on the screen, no LED lights, etc.). Hold the top button until the red LED is lit. Wait through the full boot-up process. IF this fails, you can attempt the battery-pull method above, but it is normally NOT recommended unless nothing else works.
    See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
    Hopefully that will get things going again for you! If not, then you should contact your mobile service provider for formal support.
    Good luck!

  • Issue with OSI PI WCF Web Service with wshttpbinding

    Hi Experts,
    System Details:
    SAP MII 14 SP4
    OSI PI Web Service: PITimeSeries
    I am having issue when trying to call OSI PI web service using http post. it is returning status 0 when i am using exception handler in BLS.
    Same web service works fine with basichttpbinding (SOAP 1.1)  but with wshttpbinding (SOAP 1.2) it is giving error.
    Following are Web config binding details for web service.
          <wsHttpBinding>
            <binding name="wsBinding_2011" sendTimeout="00:01:00" receiveTimeout="00:10:00" bypassProxyOnLocal="false" transactionFlow="false" hostNameComparisonMode="StrongWildcard" maxBufferPoolSize="524288" maxReceivedMessageSize="65536" messageEncoding="Text" textEncoding="utf-8" useDefaultWebProxy="true" allowCookies="false">
              <reliableSession ordered="true" inactivityTimeout="00:10:00" enabled="false" />
              <security mode="Message">

              </security>
            </binding>
          </wsHttpBinding>
    I am not sure it could be the issue with passing windows credentials.
    Did anybody consumed WCF web service with wshttpbinding with security mode as Message and clientCredentialType as Windows.
    Also i was trying to pass MYSAPSSO2 SSO token to service in http post but first i am not sure if this is correct windows token and second which header property of service should be mapped and i am not sure that I am going into correct direction or not.
    Please let me know what i am missing.
    I have tried following other options and tools:
    SOAP UI: basichttpbinding works fine for wshttpbinding receiving Internal Server error in log and Response as
                      The security context token is expired or is not valid.
    MII Web Service Action Block: basichttpbinding works fine for wshttpbinding not able to configure url through wizard because as per                                                                              my discussion with other MII experts MII does not support SOAP1.2. that is one reason for using http post.
    WCF Storm: both bindings works fine (There is option to select windows authentication and Impersonation level as delegation)
    WCF Test Client: Both bindings works fine
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Manoj Bilthare

    I'm trying to do clean installation of SQL server 2012 on Server 2012 (which is runnning as a VM on ESX server) and getting this "wait on the DB engine recovery failed" message. Initially, I though this issue was related to some permission issues

    Hi Nababoya:
    As you are telling this is a test installation process...
    In the logs i m seeing the error message "An error occurred while processing the log for database 'model'.  If possible, restore from backup. If a backup is not available, it might be necessary to rebuild the log.".
    1) If the SQL Services was installed successfully and SQL Service was not able to start because of model database issue...
        1.1) If you have model database SQL back file, start the SQL Server in single user mode with minimum configuration and try to restore MODEL database
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlserverfaq/archive/2011/05/11/inf-hey-my-sql-server-service-is-not-starting-what-do-i-do.aspx
        1.2) If you don't have backups., try to rebuild the system databases but make sure that you are not losing any data critical data on master and SQL Jobs on MSDB
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd207003%28v=sql.110%29.aspx#RebuildProcedure
    2) As if this is a new installation try to repair the instance with the help of setup media file
    3) If the repair option fails., the last option wipe out the complete SQL Server components from Services.msc and Registries and start new installation.
    4) Make sure when you are doing un-installation all the required SQL Server components on services.msc should be in stop state.
    Hope this helps and let me know any questions...
    Thanks,
    Thanks, Satish Kumar. Please mark as this post as answered if my anser helps you to resolves your issue :)

  • Creation of SharePoint Search service with the help of powershell.

    Hi Team,
    Upgraded WSS 3.0 to SharePoint 2013 Foundation red the SharePoint search.
    We found log backup on the subjected server was failing due to database name,
    which is more than max allowed legth. To fix the same, we may need to rename the

    Is it possible to create SharePoint search using PowerShell and will get support from Microsoft for search application built this way ?
    Please share information on how create SharePoint search using powershell.
