Reliable unlimited multi-record acquisition

I am attempting a multi-record acquisition in NI-SCOPE following the pattern of MultiRecordFetchMoreThanAvailableMemory.  The system is, in general, working for numRecords up to 10,000 (which in this case corresponds to 600 MB of data in total).  However, if I call niScope_ConfigureHorizontalTiming with numRecords = 100,000, acquisition immediately fails with the error:
Error BFFA669E occurred at niScope_InitiateAcquisition.
Possible Reasons:
niPAL Error -50353 occurred:
One or more memory pages in the specified logical buffer could not be locked into physical memory.  The operation could not be completed as specified.
I would like to acquire an unlimited, "potentially infinite" number of records.  One way to do this would be to set numRecords to 1, but according to my understanding, this would sacrificed the benefits of on-card buffering.  I required on-card buffering for reliability, to ensure that no trigger is missed.  This error causes me to suspect that I cannot achieve this goal simply by setting numRecords to a very large number.
How can I acquire an indefinite number of records reliably in NI-SCOPE?

My acquisition loop is attached.  It's become rather intricate, but the essential lines are
// Set the attribute to allow more records than memory
handleErr (niScope_SetAttributeViBoolean(vi, VI_NULL, NISCOPE_ATTR_ALLOW_MORE_RECORDS_THAN_MEMORY, NISCOPE_VAL_TRUE));
// Configure the vertical parameters
handleErr(niScope_ConfigureVertical(vi, d.channelName, d.verticalRange, d.verticalOffset, d.verticalCoupling, d.probeAttenuation, NISCOPE_VAL_TRUE));
// Configure the horizontal parameters
handleErr(niScope_ConfigureHorizontalTiming(vi, d.minSampleRate, d.minRecordLength, d.refPosition, recsPerAcq, d.enforceRealtime));
 handleErr(niScope_ActualNumWfms(vi, d.channelName, &numWaveform));
handleErr(niScope_ActualRecordLength (vi, &actualRecordLength));
 // The real number of waveforms is the result of dividing by the number of records.
numWaveform = numWaveform / recsPerAcq;
wfmInfoPtr = malloc(sizeof(struct niScope_wfmInfo) * numWaveform);
binaryWfmPtr.any = malloc (d.binaryDataType * actualRecordLength * numWaveform);
// If it doesn't have enough memory, give an error message
if (binaryWfmPtr.any == NULL || wfmInfoPtr == NULL) handleErr (NISCOPE_ERROR_INSUFFICIENT_MEMORY);
// Initiate the acquisition
handleErr(niScope_InitiateAcquisition(vi));
I set ALLOW_MORE_RECORDS_THAN_MEMORY to TRUE, and my mallocs succeed, but niScope_InitiateAcquisition fails with the previously mentioned error when recsPerAcq = 100000.  When recsPerAcq=10000, everything works perfectly.
Thanks for your help,
Ben

  • Nilvce dll on 64 bit OS ?? (in english)

    The same message in english.
    Hi,
    I develop, under LabVIEW, two applications in two different projects.
    I build the executable of each application in his respective project.
    This two executables share data via shared variables in "single process" on "localhost".
    One, is developed and built on 32-bits OS and the other is developed and built under 64-bit OS.
     I use the following subVIs for communication between the two executables:
    I built the executable of the program under 32-bit OS without problems.
    When I run it in the same time that the second program (this second program is still a VI, not an executable), shared variables work very good.
    That's why, the last stage of my development is: To build the ".exe" of this second program (under 64-bit OS).
    So, my problem is here.
    When I built the executable, LabVIEW told me that a problem is arrived because of "loadnilvce.vi" and the ".exe" doesn't work.
    I researched and I tried that "nilvce.dll" is missed on my 64-bit OS; whereas on my 32-bit OS this dll is contained in the following folder:
    "C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 2010\resource".
    So, first, does this dll exist under 64-bit OS or another dll replaces it ?
    If this dll is missed, how can I try it or get back it ?
    N.B: I have the installation CD of LabVIEW 2010 SP1 for 32-bit OS with the seril number associated. I downloaded on NI website the LabVIEW 2010 SP1 64-bit version and installed it with my serial number.
    Thank you so much in advance!

  • Best multifunction for use with Airport extreme/express??

    Thanks to all who can help me pick a reliable multifunction printer with fax to use for my home/business. I will wire it to the Airport Express and share it with my family thru my Airport Extreme Main base station upstairs. I am will to spend extra for features and reliablity.

    No multi-function printer will work (except possibly printing only) when connected to the USB port of the Airport Express.
    If you need to share a multi-function device ensure that you get one which already has it's own networkable wireless print server and is Mac compatible.

  • Personal Use and App Builder

    Hello guys:
    I quit my job 2 months ago and now I'm trying to do a career as a freelancer. I'm a editorial graphic designer.
    I'm now designing printed magazines but want to create digital publications now. I'm planing to buy a single app for $19/month as a individual.
    The question is:
    If I buy a license for InDesign CC, will I be able to create and submit apps for iOS and Android?
    My goal is to create Newsstand Apps for my clients.
    Is this possible with only InDesign or do I need to buy the entire Creative Cloud Collection?

    Thank you again Neil
    I have asked this questions 6 times in the adobe support chat and they don't have idea about this. In fact, they didn't know about the May 1st changes. I will be great if they know this information well as you know it.
    My last question would be... if I want to be able to create unlimited multi-folio  newsstand apps for Android and iOS, which DPS license will I need to buy and how much does it cost?
    Thank you for your help

  • Professional Edition - Single app only?

    I heard from my reseller today that from now on the DPS Professional Edition will only allow development of a single app. Is this correct?
    Greg

    The price gouging is really how you look at the product-- or more importantly what your client produces with DPS.
    If you are a traditional magazine or periodical publisher. Chances are the the $4800 over a year is a drop in the bucket compared to traditional press costs (even factoring in the folio download fee). However, where I was getting the most intereset with DPS was from non-traditional publishers who were looking to essentially create their own newsstand or library. Lot of non-profits, associations and schools which have lower print runs and liked their content being able to live in an app. I have a feeling that in another year they will be looking for another option and I will be the one with egg on my face assuming no changes from Adobe. We charged a platform fee as well but it wasn't close to $4800 per App so for some it will be tough to swallow. Plus I'll have to go back to other companies who have had an interest and let them know of the news.
    Don't know what is possible in terms of code with DPS and distribution channels. But I'd like to see unlimited multi-folio "free" apps remain with Professional Edition meaning you're not charging app, issue or subscription fees through the distribution channels...i.e. free app, free content (essentially current model without the ability to cahrge for apps) Then another Tier which would be "Professional Edition Profit" where you buy a single multi-folio license with the intent to sell content or the app (what the new model is proposed to be). Would have broader market reach, capture more clients and folio downloads.

  • Log to file or to database table?

    I'm developing a web application which uses MS SQL for various data: including users, user accounts, user licenses, license prices, invoices.
    I need to log users' real-time usage of the system, and use that for monthly billing: e.g. log whenever a user gets a specific page/URL and bill users at the end of the month based on the number of pages they fetched.
    Should I write these log events into a table in my MS SQL database ?
    Should I write these log events into a non-SQL append-only log file?
    Should I write these log events into a different log file for each user?
    This is not an especially high-volume web site: for example, a maximum of 10,000 users each doing an average of 5 loggable events/day => 50,000 events / day = 30 events / minute = 18,000,000 events / year.
    I'm asking because either option seems viable and I don't see whether one has a clear advantage.
    The data associated with a billable event is simple, e.g.:
    User ID (foreign key relationship to the Users table in SQL)
    Date and time
    URL of the billable page

    Good day Tekken
    Tekken
    >> I need to log users' real-time usage of the system, and use that for monthly billing: e.g. log whenever a user gets a specific page/URL
    The IIS already have a great built-in option of logging every request and response. Therefore it give you all the information that you need. It is highly recommended to use it for most cases, if you have this option and you control the IIS logs. The
    default location of the log files is: %SystemDrive%\inetpub\logs\LogFiles
    If your system content is based on database
    for each page (That is something like: Information Management System, or Content Management System), and you need to point to the database server at
    each page anyway, then and probably on then, you can use the same connection that you open to the database, in order to keep the information in the database.
    Application like DotNetNuke (which is CMS) logs the information in the database by default, for example.
    * If you have to be 100% that you do not lose anything then do not recommend to use your own external system like writing to a file from your application. In this case you better to use the database (but for most cases we do not care if we lose one visit
    to a page if the server crush at that point, for example)
    * I don't think that there is any need for different log file for each user. most common is to configure the iis to build new log file each day for each application. If you have a specific sub-application in the website then you can configure it with separate
    logs.
    * There several great free log analyzers for the iis logs. In several cases I prefer to actually move the information from the log file, using bulk insert, into the SQL Server but yet for most cases i prefer first writing it externally from the SQL Server.
    Writing to file will not give us to keep  ACID and we might lose information in some cases. There is option to use NoSQL for fast logging, as well.
    * if you do log into the database, then in most case you should not create indexes, and keep the table simple since it is more important to improve insert than select (you should never use update or delete on logs).
    >> This is not an especially high-volume web site: for example, a maximum of 10,000 users each doing an average of 5 loggable events/day =>
    50,000 events / day = 30 events / minute = 18,000,000 events / year.
    This look like a very small activity and basically I guess (we don't have all the information to suggest) that Database solution should be OK in your case. Make sure that you do not use express edition and you use several CPU in the database, will make much
    more reliable for multi threads and more activities on the website.

  • Thinking of an MSI Mobo

    Hi,
    I am considering an MSI mobo to replace the current one in my PC die to a few stability issues that have been narrowed down to a faulty board.  My current system is:
    OS   Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
    CPU   AMD Phenom II X6 1055T
    Motherboard   Asus M4A87TD/USB3
    Memory   Kingston 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz HyperX Memory Kit CL9 1.65V
    Graphics Card   PowerColor HD 6850 1GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card
    Monitor(s) Displays   LG
    Keyboard   Microsoft Wireless 3000 V2.0
    Mouse   Microsoft Wireless 5000
    PSU   Antec TruePower New 750W Modular PSU
    Case   Antec 300
    Hard Drives   OCZ Vertex 3 SATA 3 SSD (OS and software) + Seagate ST3500418ASATA 500Gb (user profiles etc)
    The 2 boards I am considering are MSI 990XA-GD55  or MSI MSI 990FXA-GD65.  I appreciate the cost difference, but what would be best?
    I use the USB 3 ports and while I don't currently use the PC for gaming, it was spec'd to allow me to use one of the motor racing games as a track learning tool.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am just wanting reliability and multi tasking performance. I had considered going down the Intel route but can't really justify the additional cost of a CPU when the one I have is more than adequate.
    Thanks
    Steve

    I use the MSI 990FXA-GD65 myself, and it is a great board, gets my recommendation!

  • Unlimited apps vs single/multi folios

    hi,
    i'm currently a Adobe's creative cloud subscripter. i'm happy adobe gives out a free single edition to
    CC subscripters. what adobe says is you can create unlimited apps. When i went to adobe's site to find
    out the different between single editions and other editons. Sinlge editon only let you create sinlge folio.
    if i finally create my app and sign up apple developer a/c, am i only allowed to upload 1 app?
    or, i can create as many app i want and upload to apple's iTunes.
    If that's the case, what's the difference between single and multi folios?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Is it possible to make this a newstand app?  If we have an apple enterprise account, can we make your own newstand app/viewer and load the single editions(.ipa files) as articles into this custom enterprise newstand app?
      It will be nice if we are be able to organize free inhouse single edition apps into newstand.
    Thanks

  • I want my reliable version of Firefox back. Latest 'upgrade' crashes constantly Multi-tabbed browsing crashes the latest version constantly.

    Extended multi-tabbed browsing seems beyond new version.

    You might try using the add-on 'NoSquint' which allows numerous zoom options specific to each page you visit & keeps your settings - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/nosquint/
    If you want to go back to 3.6x, you will find it here:
    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
    In most cases you can simply "upgrade" (meaning downgrade) directly from the installation. It would be a good idea to save your passwords & bookmarks just to be on the safe side.

  • Multi Acquisition bis

    I am  working with  PCI-6601 from 4 channels: I
    try to generate two signals them and to acquire of a third signal (moreover
    trigger with one of the two signals generates them to you), but  a
    problem has been placed : it gives always an error to me of the type
    “The specified resource is reserved”. Considering that I am using of
    the examples base which Count Digitl Events… and Gen Digit
    Pulse-Finite.vi moreover.  Initially when I had only one signal them of
    generation in contemporary to one of acqusizione, if I put the first
    one on ctr0 and the second ctr1, there was also in this case the error,
    then the thing has been  resolved placing on the second ctr2 (goodness
    knows because then…). Now, because I have one signal  in more, there is
    this error another time  to me (you hold account that I have controlled
    every turns the just connections on the pin…).  Some idea or
    suggestion?  Thanks

    Thank you for the advice.
    I improved the code as attached file and it came no errors.
    But in this code, the signal in ch1 is acquired and in ch2 is not acquired. Why?
    FrontPanel.pdf is the front panel of this code during operating.
    AI1 and AI2 are input same signal 1Hz sine function.
    I'm grad if you teach me the solution.

  • Save your Unlimited. B4 you get rid of it read this.

    First, If you are going to get a new phone and you have unlimited you will lose the unlimited unless you pay full price for the phone or bring a phone you bought to Verizon. Lets be clear about that first because Verizon Employees might not tell you that. Second, Find out from several employees if switching from unlimited to a regular plan is right for you. It really might work for you and you may save money but if you are like my husband who uses his phone for work  then switching out of the unlimited will not be wise.
    I want everyone to hear my story because it is wrong what Verizon did. Not only did their  employee lie to me saying we would save more money if we got out of our unlimited (we now pay an extra $40.00 a month and i dont even have a smart phone yet) But Verizon wont fix the problem. Below is the letter i sent to them and in response  a lady name Amanda from there offices said "i dont think i can give you back your unlimited." I called her and left a message to ask who else i could speak to and she never called me back.  Dont let this happen to you !!!
    Here is the letter
    Greetings,
               I have been a reliable and loyal Verizon customer for 10 years. I have also converted my family members to Verizon customers as well. The reason I have been a customer for 10 years is because I have never had any problems with customer service until now.
    I bought the iphone5 for my husband’s birthday in March/April. I had an extended conversation with one of your representatives about the data plan that would work best for my husband. She told me that taking him off the unlimited plan would be the best option for him and in the end we would save money, especially when I get my smart phone. I emphasized to her how much my husband is on his phone, and she said it would not be a problem. This of course was not true. I took her word for it and decided to opt out of the unlimited. Half way into the first month of the new plan my husband had to increase his data and as soon as this happened I called and spoke to another representative. The woman transferred me to a supervisor and this is where things took a turn. This manager Joanne or Joana was beyond rude to my husband and I. She told my husband not to use the phone when he didn’t need it and it was our fault we opted out of the unlimited plan and there was nothing she was going to do about it. Live with it! Wow really?? Is this how you speak to paying, loyal customers? I work in a well-known steak house and the way we deal with customer problems is nothing like the way I have been treated by this company.
    After speaking to Joana I have called many times. Your representatives tell me there is nothing they can do but they will have a manager call me back and days go by and nobody calls. This happened 3 times. I had a supervisor give me a number to the corporate office that was a wrong number. In the mean time our bill has gone up $40.00 and still no one is helping me. After many empty promises and so many different answers from your representatives finally a solution comes. Over a month ago I spoke to a woman who said she could put our plan back to the unlimited service because I was a loyal customer and always paid my bills on time. At first she said she could not do this because of how many months it had been since I got the phone but I told her I called from the first month I received the phone and have not stopped calling. After a long wait on the phone she came back on the line and said by the next billing cycle I will see the unlimited plan back in effect. I was thrilled and so thankful for her helping me with this problem. (Please listen to the recording of this conversation of the verbal contract this woman gives me) This was another lie. I called when I realized the plan had not been changed back to the unlimited. The representative told me that it was only a request and the representative should have called me to tell me it was denied. The woman offered to put in another request and would call me to let me know the results. She obviously never called and my request has been denied again.
    I have spoken to many of your representatives with no avail. They have deceived me from the very start and I believe it is more beneficial to your company that we don’t have the unlimited. Many of your employees told me they would have never suggested we get off the unlimited plan due to the fact of how much data my husband uses. Now that says it all!!
    I feel I have been mistreated and definitely MISLEAD by your company. I would like for things to go back to where they were before I was lied too, and I would prefer not to hear that I have waited too long or it’s no longer a plan we offer or there is nothing you can do because there is ALWAYS something you can do. I would like to have my unlimited plan back and if you will not do that for me than I ask that you wave my cancelation fee so I can cancel my plan. That’s the least you can do.
    Verizon is a huge multi million-dollar company and apparently they are no longer worried about how they treat their customer. Your company may have the best coverage but I would rather be with a company who doesn’t have the best coverage but is honest, fair and treats their customers with respect.

    This issue is usually caused by fingerprint software like TrueSuite that isn't working properly in the current Firefox release.
    Some have reported that enabling this plugin works if it is currently disabled, but best would be to remove the plugin.

  • What causes cellular data usage to decrease if last reset has not changed? I reset every pay period cuz I do not have unlimited and was showing 125 mb sent/1.2g received. Now showing 98mb sent/980mb received. Last reset still shows same

        I reset my cellular data usage every month at the beginning of my billing period so that I can keep track of how much data I am using thru out the month. I do not have the unlimited data plan and have gone over a few times. It's usually the last couple days of my billing cycle and I am charged $10 for an extra gig which I barely use 10% of before my usage is restarted for new billing cycle. FYI, they do not carry the remainder of the unused gig that you purchase for $10 which I disagree with. But have accepted. Lol  Moving on.
        I have two questions. One possibly being answered by the other. 1. Is cellular data used when I sync to iTunes on my home computer to load songs onto my iPhone from my iTunes library(songs that already exist)? 2. What causes the cellular data usage readings in iPhone settings/general/usage/cellular usage to decrease if my last reset has not changed? It is close to end of my billing cycle and I have been keeping close eye. Earlier today it read around 180mb sent/1.2gb received. Now it reads 90mb sent/980 mb recieved. My last reset date reads the same as before. I don't know if my sync and music management had anything to do with the decrease but i didn't notice the decrease until after I had connected to iTunes and loaded music. I should also mention that a 700mb app automatically loaded itself to my phone during the sync process. Is cellular data used at all during any kind of sync /iPhone/iTunes management? Is the cellular data usage reading under iPhone settings a reliable source to keep track of monthly data usage? Guess turned out to be more than two questions but all related. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer me. It is information I find valuable. Sorry for the book long question.

    Is cellular data used at all during any kind of sync /iPhone/iTunes management? Is the cellular data usage reading under iPhone settings a reliable source to keep track of monthly data usage?
    1) No.
    2) It does provide an estimated usage, but it's not accurate. For accurate determination, you should check the remaining/used MBs from the carrier (most of the carriers provide this service for free).

  • Is there a multi-authoring solution with RH Server apart from RH client?

    Greetings:
    Is Adobe looking to price itself out of the HAT market?
    Just got the pricing on RH Server 8 ($2000) and then another $1000 per RH 8 client (as I write this I am still verifying the pricing, because they first told me each user will need a full RH Server 8 license, meaning $10K for 5 authors). For five authors, that's $7000 (unless its $10,000 ;-), and about 99% overkill on the multi-authoring side, since we only need one RH 8 client for management and publishing, and a simple WYSIWYG for additional authors is all that is needed, and indeed the learning curve for RH versus a WYSIWYG makes this paying a lot of money for a huge training burden & support headache. Is this for real?
    I'm researching HAT's and I've got the same or better featured server/multi-author scenario going with HelpServer for $4000 (unlimited additional authors), Doc-To-Help Enterprise for a mere $1500 (also unlimited authors), and Flare complete with Feedback Server and 5 X-Edit author/users for less than $3500, not including support packages. Considering the fact that there is virtually nothing RH does the others don't, and quite a bit the others do that RH does not, I have to wonder -- why is there no simple to learn, inexpensive to buy WYSIWYG (something like Contribute) for multi-authoring in RH Server?
    Since it's all HTML, we could in fact go with Contribute, but direct changes would not be reflected back in the RH client files. That's about the only thing that would have to be automated beyond a Contribute-like WYSIWYG, or what am I missing?
    Just occurred to me, could have Contribute users make changes to RH shared directory, then they could be published from there. Hmmmn.
    Anyone have a workaround or other solution here?
    Shame, shame, Adobe.
    regards,
    Steven
    "I am but an egg."
    --Stranger in a Strange Land

    Hi Steven
    Dems the breaks I suppose. One way past it would be to have one RoboHelp Server license and one RoboHelp Office license. Then have the other authors simply use Microsoft Word to maintain their content. The person that uses the RoboHelp Office (Client part) could then import and link the Word documents managed by the other authors. If you worked that way you would only be looking at a total outlay of $3,000 instead of $7,000. But I suspect that you might get a better deal than $7,000 if you worked with Sales.
    Keep in mind that RoboHelp Server relies upon the content created by RoboHelp. There is no "limited WYSIWYG editor". All it does is provide reporting as well as project merging. There is nothing about it that lends itself to a simple WYSIWYG editor that provides a window into the server content.
    I cannot speak to the other tools you cited. Maybe they do work in that manner and maybe they don't. And maybe you are misunderstanding the actual capabilities. I cannot say.
    Additionally, it's helpful to keep in mind that the way RoboHelp works today was initially designed and maintained by the folks now known as MadCap. Because of that, I'd be surprised to find that the MadCap products operate in a totally different manner. Maybe they do. Adobe acquired the product by virtue of acquiring macromedia. So they didn't design the way it works. Although they have enhanced it. I see no reason to shame Adobe.
    Can you expound on your claim that " there is virtually nothing RH does the others don't, and quite a bit  the others do that RH does not". What ios the "quite a bit" that others are doing that RoboHelp isn't? RoboHelp seems fairly competitive with its feature set to me.
    Cheers... Rick

  • HP Officejet 6500A Plus will not maintain wireless connection reliably

    For the HP EXPERTS on Expert Day, April 18, 2012:
    B.L.A.T. (Bottom Line At Top):  We have an HP Officejet 6500A Plus purchased about 5 months ago.  We wanted to use it as a wireless-connected printer in another room besides our home office.  It is useless to us because it will not maintain its wireless connection, even sitting just a few feet from the router in the same room.  Except for numerous hours of troubleshooting, we have left it sitting powered up, but unused and idle, for almost the entire 5 months in our home office.  DURING ALL THAT IDLE TIME, IT HAS LOGGED OVER 3,200 DISCONNECTS, at a consistent rate of 24 disconnects every 24 hours, even though it ALWAYS reports that the wireless signal quality is “EXCELLENT” (all this is according to the Wireless Network Test Reports we’ve printed throughout the last 5 months).  So our question is, what is it that this printer is trying to do once an hour over a wireless connection that is causing these thousands of disconnects?  And how can we stop it?
    NOTE!  Before you round up the usual suspects (namely our router and our PC firewalls) please note that we also bought an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus ON THE SAME DAY as the Officejet 6500A Plus.  The 8600 was also installed with a wireless connection, and has worked without a single network issue for the entire 5 months.
    NOW, FOR THE REST OF THE STORY…
    WHO WE ARE:  My wife and I have worked on HP equipment for 33 years, starting in 1979 as corporate customers of HP when we worked for Exxon; then we both worked for HP directly for 17 years; and we’ve now used dozens of pieces of HP equipment in our home during the last 12 years in retirement.  We’re primarily software folks, so we’re not exactly experts in hardware and networking, but on the other hand, this ain’t our first rodeo either.
    OUR CONFIGURATION:
    PC’s – All running Windows 7 x64 with all important patches applied and Norton Internet Security 2012:  HPE-270f and HP AIO 200-Quad, each with full 6500A and 8600A drivers installed on wireless connection.  These 2 PC’s themselves can connect either wirelessly or via Ethernet to our home network.  The 270f has a dual-band wireless board.  Both bands work.  We also have a new dv7t laptop with only the full 6500A driver installed via wireless connection.  The laptop is now upstairs and it’s connected to our home network wirelessly without any issues.  (This is where we had hoped to also put the 6500A, but it needs to work reliably via wireless connection.)
    ROUTER:  Netgear N600 WNDR3700 providing Ethernet and wireless networking.  Router provides a very strong wireless signal throughout the house.  No wireless problems with any other equipment including an iPod, two Kindle Fires besides all the HP equipment.
    PRINTERS:  Besides the two HP printers, the HPE-270f PC has a Canon MP960 installed on it.  And if we can’t get the 6500A working right or replaced with something that does work right, we may be buying our second Canon printer.  By the way, on the 6500A, ePrint and App’s are set to ON, but of course they’re not being used, just like everything else on this AIO.
    OTHER:  We also have a Sonos music system that connects to our network via Ethernet and has its own proprietary mesh network (on another frequency) for transmitting ripped music wirelessly to speaker units throughout our house.  (If you aren’t familiar with this totally cool system, check out sonos.com).  We’ve never seen any evidence of interference between these two wireless networks, or our wireless phone sets either.
    HP TOOLS AVAILABLE ON ALL 3 PC’s:  HPU
    UPDATE 5.003.001.001 (reporting everything up-to-date); HPHDU 3.1.0.17; HPPDU 5.0.0.015 and HPNDU 4.3.0.002.
    SYMPTOMS:  The 6500A Plus installs quickly and easliy, and connects wirelessly just fine during installation.  But sometime over the next hour (usually less), it disconnects and won’t print from PC applications.  Sometimes the application puts up an “Unable to communicate with printer” screen, even though the PC usually thinks the printer is “ready”.  Other times, the PC thinks the printer is offline (but printers don’t have “offline” buttons anymore!).  Often, if you just leave everything alone, the 6500A will somehow reconnect and print out the spooled file 5-30 MINUTES later.  So it does usually seem to be able to recover given some time, but that doesn’t always fit our schedule!   Occasionally, turning the wireless radio on the printer off and back on will fix it right away.  But usually, you have to power the printer completely off, and then back on.  As far as we know, that always fixes it…..until the next disconnect a few minutes later!
    PREVIOUSLY TRIED:  After reading some of HP’s wireless network support websites, I manually assigned a fixed IP address to this printer.  It didn’t seem to matter; according to the wireless network test report, it still logs disconnects at the rate of one per hour, and all the failure symptoms were the same.
    We also dabbled a bit with setting this printer as “trusted” to the Firewall, but that didn’t seem to matter either.
    Next, we connected the printer via Ethernet.  The printer immediately started to work, even though it had just been in its “failed” state over the wireless connection.  As far as we know, it never failed while connected via Ethernet.  This seems to point to a purely wireless hardware/firmware problem on the printer itself.
    Late last year, I tried two different chat sessions about this with the inter-continental AIO support teams, each one lasting several hours.  Unfortunately, none of their optimistic solution scripts seemed to fit our problem.  They both seemed determined to reconfigure the 6500A as a TCP/IP printer, which of course worked fine initially, just like everything else.  At this point, they would understandably want to close the chat.  But 20-30 minutes later, we could no longer print to it.  During the second chat, they got into one of our PC’s remotely and effectively turned off the spooler (by selecting “Print Directly” or something like that).  After that, all was well again (as usual) UNTIL the printer disconnected, at which time attempting to print from that PC would HANG the application (since the spooler was no longer buffering) and eventually hang the whole PC.  One giant leap backwards.  That’s when I gave up on the multi-hour chat sessions.
    The three diagnostic utilities (HDU, PDU, NDU) have been tried over and over.  When the printer is in its disconnected state, the DU’s usually don’t detect the 6500A at all, or if they do detect it, they are unable to fix anything.  Frankly, it’s easier to just power the printer off (which takes about a minute) and power the printer back on (which takes more than a minute) and then wait for the spooler to kick in (usually about 30 seconds).  BUT WE DON’T CONSIDER THAT A SOLUTION!!
    B.L.A.B.  (Bottom Line At Bottom):  We have used up nearly the entire black ink cartridge and at least a ream of paper troubleshooting this brand new printer, to no avail.  This printer is useless to us unless it can maintain a wireless connection reliably.  Please help!
    Thanks –
    Bob and Jane
    (Note: we have an appointment from about 11:20 am EDT – 1 pm EDT, 8:20 am PDT till about 10 am PDT)

    I bought the Officejet 6500A Plus about one month and have experienced the very same problem. I tried to remedy this problem following suggestions in a number of different posts (static IP, router, firewalls etc), all to no avail. Last week I called support. The support I received by the tech over several hours and different days for a week was very good. However none of his suggestions corrected the connection issue. After today's recommended fix failed, he advised HP is aware of this issue with the 6500 and other affected printers. He claimed HP was working on a firmware upgrade. He did not know when the update would be provided. The tech also claimed HP acknowledged this problem in a written announcement. He agreed to email the announcement to me. I haven't received it. This has been the only problem I've had with the 6500

  • A stable, fast reliable VNC connection to Lion or Lion server

    I hope this post help people with VNC setup from non Mac machines to a Mac running Lion or Lion Server 10.7.4.
    Apple has changed quite a few things in Lion regrading VNC and screen sharing. As a consequence many VNC viewers are no longer compatible until the VNC software is upgraded to be Lion compatible. You will find many posts about this topic in this forum, eg
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3289794?start=0&tstart=0
    Often, the result is that  the user can't proceed beyond the gray login screen (screen locks up etc).
    This post describes how configure Real VNCs VNC server on Lion Server 10.7.4 to work in conjunction! with ARD, thus allowing you to keep screen sharing enabled and still use ARD from client if that is desired)
    Download the VNC server at (Version 5! necessary)
    http://www.realvnc.com/download/vnc/latest/
    and install the VNC server on the host (the computer you want to login to via VNC)
    Single User Host setup
    ==================
    - Install the VNC server and follow the intsruction
    (If you your Mac is configured for remote management, screen sharing, remote apple events the installation may complete with error stating to contact the manufacturer....ignore the error as it most likely caused by a port conflict because VNC server and ARD (or apple scrren sgaring both use port 5900 per default), the software was still completely and correctly installed.
    - start VNC Server by opening Finder -> Applications -> Real VNC -> VNC Server (User Mode)
    You will see a small VNC icon in the top tsak bar of the screen.
    (if you open the "information Center" the issues tab will show a port 5900 conflict)
    - open VNCserver Options and select the connections tab:
    +Change the default port from 5900 to 5901 and serve Java viewer on Port from 5800 to 5801
    + Change Authetication to "Mac password"
    + Select Encryption "always on"
    - Selct the expert tab
    +scroll down to the bottom of the list and change "StopUserModeOnSwitchOut" to "no"
    (this settings prevents the VNC server to be stopped automatically if you have Fast Switching User Mode enabled on the host.)
    - select "Apply"
    (now if you open the Information Center" again, the port conflict problem should be solved.
    - select "open" from the VNC server menu:
    If the configuration was succesful, thw window will show a check mark in a green box stating everything is ok.
    - In addition you will find the address that the client user will need to connect to the VNC server on the host
    it will say something like "VNC viewer user can connect using the address 192.168.x.y:1"
    Note: If you start several VNC servers, each session will need a dedicated port (like 5902, 5903 etc)
    Router/Firewall Settings:
    ===================
    Depending on the router/firewall you use your ports may have been automatically configured for you (airPort extreme for example).
    You need to open port 5901 and 5801 and forward these ports to the IP address of the host. If ARD was alredy working in your setup, you can copy the port coniguration for ports 5900, 3283 and 3306 that are used by ARD and implement the same rules for the new port used by VNC 5901.
    Review the settings of your firewall/router.
    VNC client
    ========
    - download the VNC client for your OS from
    http://www.realvnc.com/download/viewer/
    and follow the install instructions.
    - Start the VNC client on your client PC (Windows for example) and enter the address that the VNC server reported to you earlier (192.168.x.y:1)
    - Encryption : "Let VNC Server choose"
    - select "connect"
    - enter your Mac username and password that was setup on your host
    you are now connected via VNC to your host.
    You can also configure the VNC server to allow other users to login to the same! VNC session using their user credentials (friends/family or serverAdmins that want to share access to the host)
    To do this open the options dialog box on the VNC server host computer and select "configure" next to authentication.
    - add the users that are supposed to get access to your VNC session using their own credentials. (make sure this is what you really want, otherwise read on in the multi user section of this post)
    Multi User Host Setup
    =================
    If multiple users are supposed to access the host computer using their own credentials logging into their own! desktop, follow these instructions:
    - first enable Fast User Switching on your host computer by going to
    System preferences -> User/Groups -> Login Options and select the check box  "show fast user switching menu as..."
    - For each user on the host that should be reached via a VNC session start VNC server (user) as described before and assign a new port number to the new user like 5902 etc.
    - repeat the configuration outlined above for each user (eg. "StopUserModeOnSwitchOut" to "no")
    (note initilally when you start the VNC server for the first time again, you will get notified that a port conflict exists again....this disappears as soon as the new port is configured)
    now another user can login via VNC into his own desktop using the server address : "191.168..x.y.:2"
    Final notes:
    =========
    I spent hours trying to get a variety of VNC viewers to work with the new screen sharing/VNC implementation in Lion and finally gave up. I called Apple Enterprise support and they confirmed that "a majority of the existing VNC products are not compatible with the new VNC implementation in Lion yet and that Apple recommends ARD". The discussion on what other non Mac users (Windows, Linux) should do did not go anywhere....
    I have tested the above configuration with the free version VNC server 5 on the host and the free version VNC viewer 5 on a client. It worked flawlessly, fast, reproducable and very stable. You need to be aware that depending on the features you want (number of desktops, users etc) that you may have to purchase the personal or enterprise edition for the server.
    The featurs are described here:
    http://www.realvnc.com/products/vnc/
    I personally installed the enterprise edition after I verified that the free editions worked stable and reliably as I needed them to work.
    I hope you now have a stable VNC link into your Lion host from the platform of your choice !

    I'm using the free VNC edition from RealVNC on Mt. Lion (10.8.5) and the basic information is in this article for Lion is confirmed for the VNC Server 5.0.6 (r113416) on Mt. Lion.
    The main Options... window shows the Connections tab and I just changed my port to something other than 5900 and the port conflict went away.
    The Free edition does not allow Mac password and encryption can't be enabled. (Ya gotta pay for that.)
    Connected to it from my iPod Touch using Mocha VNC with no problems.
