Early 2008 13" macbook to HD tv

I have an early 2008 macbook 13" (approx. mfg. date between 12/1 and 12/7 according to coconutidenitycard.) I want to use this laptop for iWork presentations on HDTV's. It is my understanding that the DVI port on this model is different from that on later 2008 models. I have already purchased a Griffin Mini Displayport to HDMI & DVI connector. This adapter will not work with my mac, the DVI plug-in is completely different from the connection on my mac. My question is what cable or cables do I need to use to connect to an 54" panasonic HDTV ( using an HDMI cable is my prefered method as I already have the HDMI cable.)

Here's some of the Mini-DVI adapters from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_3_16?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keyword s=mini-dvi+to+hdmi+adapter&sprefix=mini-dvi+to+hdmi%2Caps%2C369
When you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo system for audio if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini-DVI to HDMI doesn't carry audio and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.
When you first hook it up it will probably have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. The Menu Bar and Dock will be on the MacBook display and your background screen on the TV but you can move the cursor onto the TV screen.
In System Preferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen.
You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.

  • What are my options for having my case for my Early 2008 white macbook repaired?

I own an early 2008 white macbook and as most people know they were notorious for ending up with cracks in the plastic body. Well, mine has it's fair share of cracks and the little nob on the bottom used for securing the battery in place has also broken off. The computer still runs great and does everything I need, but the keyboard and trackpad are glitchy, the battery won't stay in place, and it just kind of looks bad with the cracks. How can I go about getting these things fixed? I read that apple was fixing the cases for free for a while if it was within 5 years of purchase but I was NEVER told about this even when I took the laptop into the apple store several times for general questions and I am now beyond 5 years since purchase. I've seen plenty of third party sites to buy new cases on, but is there any chance the apple store would be willing to replace it for me still a this point? Also, since the plastic casing is so prone to cracking is it possible to replace my keyboard with one of the keyboards from the late 2008 aluminum body to avoid future chipping or would this not fit my model?

Call an Apple store and ask.

    no.

  • Just updated my iPad 2 to OS7 and now I can't connect it to iTunes 10 on my MacBook OS 10.5.8 My MacBook can't be updated to Mountain Lion as it is early 2008 white MacBook

Just updated my iPad 2 to OS7 and now I can't connect it to iTunes 10 on my MacBook OS 10.5.8
My MacBook is too old and  can't be updated to Mountain Lion as it is early 2008 white MacBook.
It all worked perfectly prior to updating the iPad 2 to OS7.
There were no cautions or warnings
    Are there any work arounds?
Can I uninstall OS7 and go back to OS6?
Rediculous thing is I can connect to iTunes on an old PC of the same age

Thanks for your comments but this doesn't help my situation at all.
Again Apple fails to provide backward support for its own products.
I could go to the trouble of hacking the MacBook and running Mountain Lion and iTunes 11 that way
I think I will just move across to a PC as a result of this Apple strategy and I think I will just give up on Apples short lived product strategy.
A laptop that lasts five years indicates a long lived product strategy.  Where they go wrong is to prevent backwards strategy when someone genuinely cannot live with ios7 like you. even the "unsupported" downgrade has now been blocked.
Don't go windows,  you will not get five good years from a dell or an asus. If you can't buy Mountain Lion for it,  get a new macbook, enjoy.

  • Early 2008 15" Macbook Pro acting very strange

So long story short, I bought a used early 2008 15" Macbook Pro and I keep having issues with it. I replaced the hard drive, replaced the thermal paste (after removing the old paste of course), cleaned her inside and out, updated software, firmware, & reset the pram/smc. None have totally solved the issues. I constantly have files from the hard drive disappear, then reappear whenever they want. The backlighting on the keyboard doesn't want to work if I am doing multiple things like, iTunes, TuneUp, & surfing the net, it just suddenly stops and if I try to activate by using the F6  on the keyboard I get a symbol of a circle with a line through it. The only way to get the keyboard to light up again is to reboot it. The hard drive I replaced with the old one is 500 gigs at 7200, 32mb cache. She also warms up rather quickly even though I used the artic silver thermal paste. I can never seem to get her temp below 45-55 Celsius. I even took apart the tiny internal fans and cleaned them thoroughly. I build desktop systems as well as repair laptops so I do know more than the average user but I am at a total loss here on what else could be the cause of all this strange behavior. I don't know what, if anything the previous owner did with it, which makes it even harder to figure out. Could this be a logic board or power supply issue? There are no other problems with power other then needing to replace the battery, but since it is plugged in everytime I use it, I really don't think this is the cause. Any suggestions are welcomed :-)

Have you ever been able to burn discs? What error are you seeing?
Look in System Profiler(Applications>Utilities) & click the *Disc Burning* tab on the left-hand side.
Look at *Write Strategies*. You should see something like this:

  • No keyboard access in bootcamp after upgrade to Early 2008 MacBook Pro

How do I regain keyboard access in Bootcamp after a hardware upgrade to a new (early 2008) 15" MacBook Pro (MBP)?
I was recently forced to upgrade from a July 2007 MBP 15" to an early 2008 MBP due to a burglary. The original MBP also had a Bootcamp partition in use for business purposes (Windows XP SP2).
Fortunately using Time Capsule and WinClone I had very recent back ups of all data and migration to the new MBP went well until I encountered an insurmountable problem at the point I wished to update the new MPB Bootcamp drivers in the restored Bootcamp partition.
The problem being encountered is as follows:
When starting up in the restored Bootcamp partition I am unable to update the with the latest Bootcamp drivers as the keyboard is inoperative. I am therefore unable to get past the CtrlAltDel security pane and navigate to load the Leopard install disk.
I do however have mouse control.
I have also tried rebooting with an external keyboard and mouse. Again the mouse worked but not the keyboard.
To add further confusion or insight into this problem I had a BartPE Windows CD utility disk set-up available for emergency use and this will boot on the new MBP. Once booted it does provide mouse and keyboard access suggesting that somehow in the WinClone restoring process the original keyboard driver was damaged.
This may well be the case as when I first started up the Bootcamp partition after the restore I encountered a Windows 'blue screen of death' that pointed to a Driver fault in a file called "bcmw15.sys".
After restarting Windows I no longer encountered the blue screen but had no keyboard access as described above.
Unforunately using the BartPE CD to bypass the keyboard problem has thwarted me as this configuration does not appear to have a means available to eject the BartPE CD itself, allowing me to then insert the Leopard install disk in its place.
Given the unique nature of the Windows system configuration I had in use any suggestions as to how I might overcome this without having to resort to rebuilding the configuration from scratch would be gratefully received.
In particular if anyone may know of the MacBook Pro Windows keyboard driver name and location this would be of particular assistance.
    Dion

Booting from the Windows Install CD did not work.
I have however recovered the partition and got operational again.
The solution in the end was achieved by gaining access via Windows XP start-up in 'safe mode' using an external MS USB keyboard (the new MBP 'delete' key was not being recognised, and then using the 'Administrator' password to gain access to the Windows XP 'Device Manager'.
The full saga of difficulties encountered is too lengthy to relate in full unless someone out there really wants to know the gory details for their own specific similar need.
Suffice it to say that the most of the problems that arose were:
    a) the result of the hardware changes between the old MBP and the new one requiring select old drivers to be located and removed and then new drivers installed;
    b) due to an upgrade that occurred to the MS Enterprise server software in the period between when the WinClone image was taken and when the new MPB arrived and I attempted the restore (including that as a consequence of the burglary I updated my corporate mailbox password online causing the back-up XP image to be out of sync with Enterprise server once networking was revived); and
    c) a Parallels software upgrade reinstall also caused issues in regaining sync with the revived Bootcamp.
Isolating the driver causing the offending ""bcmw15.sys" driver crash proved very tricky as Windows appeared to keep reinstalling some sort of generic driver that kept repeating the problem. Thereafter getting past the blocks to accessing the Apple install CD also required enormous trial and error skill to overcome.
Bottom line WinClone did perform. It restored the partition on the new machine with sufficient integrity to allow a skilled Sys Op (far beyond my Win experience) the capability to fully restore Bootcamp XP functionality.
Nevertheless the process is definitely not one I'd prefer to experience a repeat of - its taken several man days (and nights) to resolve.
Nevertheless thanks xnav for your advice.
    Regards
    Dion

  • How can I hook up an early-2008 macbook pro to an hdtv

I have an early-2008 17" MacBook Pro.  I want to hook it up to my HDTV.  I have a DVI to HDMI cable, and have connected it to my TV, but all I'm getting is that "milky way" looking desktop background on the tv.  Nothing on my desktop, nor my desktop image is displayed.  Can anyone help me figure out what the problem is?  I've searched the net, and all I've found is people using a mini-hdmi connector for the newer MBP's.
    Thanks.

Your TV set is connected to the MBP in Extended Desktop mode. Open Displays Preferences and click the "Arrangement" tab. You will see each of your displays represented as a rectangle; the larger one will probably be your TV. Note which edge of the built-in display it adjoins. Close Display Preferences and drag a window, any window, off that edge of the built-in display, and it will appear on the external display. In Extended Desktop mode you can set the resolution of each display independently of the other, allowing you to use the full native resolution of the TV set. You just need to move the window(s) that you want to appear on the TV set onto it.
The alternative is to use Mirrored mode, in which the TV set always displays exactly the same image as the built-in display, always at exactly the same resolution setting. This is easier to understand than Extended Desktop mode, but if the TV set's native resolution is higher than the built-in display's, you won't be able to use it, and the image will be somewhat blurred on the TV. An LCD display is always blurry when used at anything other than its native (maximum) resolution setting.
To toggle back and forth between Extended Desktop and Mirrored modes, press Command+F1.

If you choose to use garbage such as "Intego VirusBarrier" you are going to need more memory, a lot more. I suggest you uninstall it according to its instructions, and evaluate your Mac's performance without burdening it with completely useless junk. As long as Intego remains active, your Mac will have few resources remaining to do anything else.
Using Intego's "Virus Barrier" and "Net Barrier" products on a brand new Mac containing nothing but one minimally configured user account resulted in performance degradation so severe that it became nearly unusable. No knowledgeable Mac user would consider using it even remotely tolerable.
Intego should only be uninstalled using the uninstaller included with it. Don't use anything else. A successful uninstallation will result in the following:
After that, restart your Mac. Other Intego components will remain but they will be inert and will not affect your Mac's operation.

  • What is the max hard drive size in an early 2008 MacBook?

I've got an early 2008 black macbook.  I want to upgrade from a 250gb hard drive to either a 750gb 7200rpm drive or a 1tb 5200rpm drive.  Will either of these work in there?  I don't know if there is a maximum hard drive size/rpm that I can put in there.  Thank you for your help!

I know these posts were a while ago, but I wanted to check in on your 2008 Macbook. I have the same model and want to do the hard drive update. Is your machine still up and running, or have you moved on?
    Thank you!

  • Average Maximum Cycle Count for Early 2008 MacBook (Black)

I have a black early 2008 MacBook that now in its fourth year, and I have noticed that battery health have started to diminish.
I am wondering what is the maximum battery cycle count for the early 2008 black MacBooks, and if its time to replace it? (I have 250 cycle count, with 78% health remaining)

You can get a new third party battery fairly cheap on eBay. Every MacBook from 2006 through Mid 2009 except the Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 and 2010 White Unibodies use the same A1185 battery.

  • Wireless speed keeps slowing down on Early 2008 Macbook

My girlfriend has an early 2008 white Macbook. After four months from buying it her wireless connection began giving her trouble. After a few minutes of using the computer her internet speed would drop to almost nothing, this would prevent all her use of the internet in any way or form. Then she would have to turn off airport and turn it back on to go through this process again. No other computer in her house does this other than hers, the only Mac in the house. The problem is very frustrating and I wonder if anyone knows of any way to solve it. Any and all help will be appreciated.

I have the same machine and the same problem. You're not alone!

  • MacBook Pro (Early 2008) won't start

    Hello,
I have an early 2008 model MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard and Windows XP through Boot Camp. From searching, I can see that people have had issues booting but their computers had at least turned on - mine doesn't even get that far.
I went to use the computer yesterday and was unable to turn it on. I looked up the Apple support website on another computer and tried the two fixes there (I believe it is called resetting the PRAM and SRAM?) but still no luck.
The battery light indicates that the battery is fully charged and there is no indication on the computer that it is turned on, no light on the opening clip button thing and no light on the Apple symbol.
I am thinking this could be the Logicboard issue but I have never had a problem with video before.
    Any help/advice?

    Simular issue here.
Last night, I closed the lid, putting the machine to sleep, as always.
This morning, I opened the lid again, it started with a Black Srceen, so I though "Let's turn the backlight up" No function there "Reset display?" I closed and re-opened lid, nothing "Restart!" pushed power-button, followed by enter, still nothing, so I held down the power-button to completely kill the machine, then to boot it up. I pushed the power-button again... It started up the fan and disc-drive for 1.5 seconds, then shuts down again.
I've tried it all, reset SMC, PRAM, checked power-cord, check the battery, boot without battery, re-insert ram, but nothing!
It seems the power-supply goes on, asks the logic-board for activity, get's no answer, and commits suicied again.
I'm out of Apple-care, I live in Denmark, so no genius bar for me.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Remove OS X and install Windows 8 on early 2008 macbook

My early 2008 white macbook is on snow leopard which is seemingly no longer receiving important security updates. I was wondering if it would be possible to remove OS X and simply install Windows 8 on this particular machine. Will there be any driver problems? Is there anything in particular that I should look out for. I'd rather have a pure Windows installation rather than through bootcamp which doesn't seem to support the latest windows without a bit of hacking.

just a little bump for help, please
