Early 2013 vs. Late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro - which is better? Refurb or New?

Hi, I'm looking to get myself a new (or refurbished) MacBook Pro Retina.
And wondering which one to get (i.e. from the list below).
Brand New (Late-2013) - $2450 (after corporate discount):
CPU 2.3 Ghz (Haswell)
16GB RAM
512 GB SSD
Refurbished (Late-2013) - $2250:
CPU 2.3 Ghz (Haswell)
16GB RAM
512GB SSD
Refurbished (Early-2013) - $2200:
CPU 2.7Ghz (Ivy Bridge)
16GB RAM
512GB SSD
While it might be an obvious choice for some ppl - I'm a bit puzzled. Early-2013 can be with LG screen (which seems to have a lot of complains about).
Will Older-2.7Ghz vs. Newer-2.3Ghz be noticeable for an average user (not a Pro editor etc.)?
What is more important for average and normal (but multi-tasking) performance - is it CPU or RAM or SSD?
And does it make sense to pay $200 more for New vs. Refurbished?
Thanks in advance.

Comparing Late-2013 15” rMBPs.
The 2.6 GHz model is 17% faster on GeekBench 2 benchmarks and has more RAM and so will run faster, but will this percentage be noticeable?
The extra RAM will matter if and when you run enough programs so they do not all fit in memory.  For light duty processing that should happen rarely in 8 GB. Even if you run a memory-hungry program like PhotoShop, the extra RAM does not make much of a difference.  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5659174?tstart=30  There are larger-memory programs where it would matter but those are not in the mix you have mentioned.
Again the GPU speeds will differ:
2.0 GHz model: Intel Iris Pro 5200 (2.0 GHz)
2.6 GHz model: NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M and Intel Iris Pro 5200
For graphics intensive applications the rendering speed differences will be noticeable.
On the applications you mentioned it willl be hard to tell the difference in speed on these two models.  Thus you might as well get the one with the larger SSD.  If you were to include graphics rendering programs then the 2.6 GHz model speed would be faster, but those are not in the mix of programs you mentioned.

Can i expand the SSD on my late 2012 Retina Macbook Pro from the current 128GB to 256GB or more?

You can look here to see if they have anything available for your model, but be advised even opening a Retina voids the warranty.

  • Late 2013 Retina Macbook Pro power brick extremely hot to the touch!  This affected my computer (It was hot as well) - I could smell something burning!  I am unsure the issue!

    Hello,
I purchase the latest 2013 Retina Macbook Pro, which I pluged in my charger and walked away from my computer!  When I arrived, my computer was in sleep mode and I noticed a faint burning smell and felt my computer and it was extremely HOT!  I then felt the power brick and it was even hotter!  10 minutes after I awoke the computer (ESTIMATED), the computer actually cooled down...  It's not hot to the touch but still warm!  On the other hand, the power brick is still extremely HOT!
Please help!  I started the charge at 3% and awoke it around 78% and now it's at 89%
Also, how long does it take to charge from 3% to 100%?  It's been about 2 hours to reach 89%
    Thanks,
    Anthony
NOTE:  Any support would be great!  I could use the advice as this is personally my first MAC!  I am thinking a software update to fix the computer from heating up when sleeping but I am unsure about the power brick!

I always thought that keeping it plugged in nearly 24/7 can damage the battery too?
No, not at all, the only damage from being plugged in all the time are IF:
A: its not turned off and in sleep mode ALL the time while plugged in
B: you dont unplug it ever couple weeks or so and drain the battery down to about 30 to 40%
*Also, if youre going to store your macbook away for a few weeks or more,... make sure it has at least a 50% or so charge.
*Cycle count / use/ lifespan is one thing that cant be countered.
Proper treatment is another thing. Just because LiPo batteries dont need conditioning in general,.. does NOT mean they dont have an ideal use / recharge environment. Anything can be abused even if it doesnt need conditioning.
Just use and enjoy your new macbook,
    From Apple on batteries:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1446
but really all you would keep in mind is --"consider 15-20% is the same as 0% and recharge it"
Important useful info on your Lithium cells as compiled from battery experts:
Heat increases battery performance but shortens life by a factor of two for every 10°C increase above 25–30°C (18°F above 77–86°F). This is yet another important reason for the cooling of any notebook, not just keeping the processor and GPU cool. Mavericks lower power tasking (app nap) and combined with the cool running Haswell processor both greatly protect battery life on your Macbook now more than ever before.
Good news: *Mavericks not only increases a single charge cycle for longer battery use off a full charge,… but also prolongs the overall long term life of the LiPo battery in a Macbook by reducing the load conditions the battery experiences from heavy peak-use.
Counting cycles is not conclusive because a discharge may vary in depth and there are no clearly defined standards of what constitutes a charge cycle on a Lithium Ion battery empirically. Similar to a mechanical device that wears out faster with heavy use, so also does the depth of discharge (DoD) determine the cycle count.
The shorter the discharge (low DoD), the longer the battery will last. If at all possible, avoid full discharges and charge the battery more often between uses. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine.
Frequent HIGH depth of discharge rates (draining the battery very low) on a Lithium battery will hasten the lowering of maximum battery capacity.
Although better performing when warm, lithium polymer batteries live longer when kept cool.
Lithium cells prefer draining conditions at a steady pace rather than fast pulsed or quick discharges, …this fact is idealized now with the Haswell and Mavericks app-nap low power tasking for battery use.

  • Recurring Kernel Panics on Retina Macbook Pro

I've got a Retina Macbook Pro which has spontaneous kernel panics. I'm not sure how to go about troubleshooting it and would love some guidance here. I think experience with reading the logs and understanding what kernel extensions are doing and stuff is what I need, but I don't have that experience yet
Anyways, some of the KPs happen with a Thunderbolt display connected, some without. From what I can gather from the kext in the backtrace, the Thunderbolt's ethernet adapter extension was implicated somehow, leading me to believe the issue has something to do with the Thunderbolt display... But not sure what it really means that it is in that backtrace...
Also, the thunderbolt display sometimes flickers off and on. This is not reproducible, it only happens sometimes.

I have googled for guides on interpretting OS X kernel panics and the kext backtraces but most guides say something along the lines of "check some hardware stuff, if not that, the easiest option is reinstall OS X". That's fine and dandy, and I'm pretty sure it would resolve this issue, but I would really like to understand what the problem is an try to fix it. I can easily reinstall OS X but that's no fun and doesn't teach me anything. If that's what I need to do, I will definitely do it.
    Thanks for any guidance!

    Hi -
I have had multiple Kernel Panics in the last week or so... I only seems to happen when I have 2 Thunderbolt Displays plugged in.
Does this appear to be a Hadware or Software issue... can you tell?
Thank ou in advance for your recommendation.

  • How can I do a clean installation of Mavericks 10.9.1 on Late 2013 Retina Macbook Pro

Hi I need some help -
I bought a late 2013 15' Retina Macbook Pro and it was shipped with 10.9.0 build number 13A3017.
Now 10.9.1 is out, and I wanted to download the full installation image and burn it to thumb drive and do a full clean re-installation.
But I just found Mac App Store doesn't allow me to download the full 5.29GB installation image from https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/os-x...ks/id675248567, and my current 10.9.0 can only be _upgraded_ to 10.9.1 with the 395MB incremental update package from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1712, this upgrade package is described as "It includes all updates from OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 plus system specific enhancements to improve the stability and compatibility of your Mac."
So maybe the full 5.29GB 10.9.1 which is available on Mac App Store is not compatible with the 2013 15' Late Retina Macbook Pro?
I just downloaded the upgrade package from Mac App Store and now I'm running 10.9.1 build number 13B3116 fine.
So my questions here: I really would like to do a clean full re-installation of 10.9.1. Where can I get the full installation image which is compatible with 2013 15' Late Retina Macbook Pro?

There is a way to get yourself a fully functional install file for a Late 2013 model.
    1. Format a USB stick
    2. Reboot the Mac, and hold down CMD-R to get into recovery mode
    3. Start a new installation and choose the USB stick as a target. You should be able to choose your normal hard drive as a target, too, because as long as the installer package is downloaded, no data should be erased, but when you decide to use a USB stick, you're on the safe side.
    4. The Mac will be downloading the install package. This takes a while, the time remaining shown is not correct. If you need to have an idea how long it will take you, choose the log from the help menu during download, it will show you how many chunks are already downloaded (it was 504 chunks total for me).
    5. When the download is ready, the Mac reboots automatically, pull the USB stick when it does. If you're not before your computer when this happens, don't worry, when you come back, you will be in the setup program. Just switch your machine off by pressing the power switch for more than 10 seconds, and then pull the stick.
    6. On the stick you will find the "OS X Install ESD.dmg". Copy that file to your Mac (it's the only file you'll need from the stick. After that, you can reformat the stick and use it for the next step).
    7. You can use this file to finally create a bootable USB stick if you follow the instructions that you can find anywhere on the net or in this forum.

  • Late 2013 retina macbook pro drops thunderbolt ethernet cyclically

My new (late 2013) retina macbook pro drops the wired ethernet connection many times a day. Each time killing off all VPN and ssh sessions. This is using the apple thunderbolt to gigE adapter.
This is the second thunderbolt adapter I've received from Apple. Both do the same thing.
Here's my console log filtered on "Link". It's a continuous series of link up/link down messages.
Same problem on both thunderbolt ports too.

Oops, no idea where the mountainlion thing came from. cut&paste error I expect, but , yes, you are correct, mavericks 10.9.2
I'm about to that point, but it's going to be hard for them to diagnose because it's so random. I'll go in there, it'll work, then we'll stand around staring at eachother for a bit.
Then they'll say, you have to reload your OS from scratch and I'll say "but I just did that" and that will be it.
Maybe that's a bit overly cynical, but I'm not holding out a lot of hope for the 3 hours time suck that a trip to the mother ship.

  • Sound stops working while using headphones on Retina Macbook Pro (late 2013)

I have a brand new Retina Macbook Pro (late 2013) with OSX 10.9.1 installed. The sound continuously stops working when I'm using my headphones (which I use on a daily basis). I've noticed that when I unplug the headphones, the sound from the internal speakers and the headphone port stops working.
I've already checked other answers and have tried their suggestions:
I've looked at the sound settings and it is not set to mute.
I've tried unplugging the headphones several times in a row and that still doesn't work.
I don't see a red light in the headphone port.
I've checked the headphones and there is nothing wrong with them (I use them with other devices).
I've tried using different headphones, but the problem persists.
The only way to get the sound working again is by restarting my laptop which is very inconvenient. I use this laptop for working and having to restart it every time I unplug my headphones is just not a solution. I honestly have no idea what is going on. This is a very new laptop (and my first Macbook); I've had it for less than 3 months. The laptop stays on my desk and has not been dropped or damaged in any way. This is a very expensive laptop and the last thing I would expect is for there to be a problem like this.
If anyone has a solution to get rid of this problem once and for all, please let me know!
    Thank you.

I have a brand new Retina Macbook Pro (late 2013)

  • Late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro - ODD SEVERE POWER ISSUE?

My late 2013 retina macbook pro 13" was on safari (on battery, not plugged in) and then the screen went black. The screen went back on, then back to black, then back on, then the Macbook shut off completely.
Then, it tried rebooting twice, both failing to get past a gray screen and startup tone / chime before turning off for good. Now it won't turn on besides you seeing a gray screen and barely hearing the chime before it turning straight off again.
Any suggestions would be great! I have important files that are for a deadline within a couple days!

Try resetting the SMC. If that doesn't work, take it to the Genius Bar. You're under warranty.

  • Non-Retina Macbook Pro Vs. Refurbished Early 2013 Retina Macbook Pro

    Hey guys,
Im currently shopping around for a new laptop as I start University Monday and still have not decided on a Macbook. I originally thought I'd be completely fine purchasing a Non Retina Macbook Pro with student pricing at $999. I was ready to purchase it when I found myself gaining more interest in the Retina version, which seems to be better in every possible way except hard drive space, as well as the obvious difference in price. I feel as is 128GB will be not nearly enough, and the 256GB is $1500 at student pricing, which after tax will be way out of my budget. I've narrowed it down to two choices really, the Newest Non Retina Macbook Pro 13 inch $999, and a Refurbished February 2013 Retina Macbook Pro 13 inch, Non iris and 256 GB.
    http://store.apple.com/ca/product/FE...retina-Display
There's the link for it... I guess I'm simply just asking for your opinions guys. My laptop will be used for Internet Browsing, Watching shows, Simple Movie editing, Music, and the occasional low requirement gaming (League of Legends).
One of my concerns is also Resale.. I believe by 2-4 Years I will want to sell my macbook, and Im not sure anyone will even want to purchase a non retina by then, or the value will just plummet.
Also, is the difference in hardware that crazy between the Earlier Retina and current non retina? I know the current retina blows the non retina out of the water, but Im not sure about the early 2013 retina.
I've been saying retina too much lately...
Anyways, let me know what you think guys
    Thanks !

First let me address the issue of refurbished MBPs.  Same warranty and telephone support as a new one.  I have done this three times and will also probably do it next time.  In every instance there have been NO detectable cosmetic flaws.
The rertina's fast performance to large extent is due to the SSD storage.  Install a SSD in a conventional MBP and you will achieve similar results.   The difference in performance between the 2013 and the current models will be slight.  You would barely notice and difference in normal light resource applications.  My personal feeling is that storage capacity is more important that CPU speed and even RAM.  External HDDs are for backups, not for storing data because of storage limitations on the computer (if possible).  When I go mobile, I do not want to take an external HDD with me.
Games on any MBP are not going to be a top notch experience.  They do not excel in that department.
    Ciao.

  • HELP! Retina Macbook Pro Late 2012 vs Late 2013

Hey guys, faced with a dilemma here and looking for some help
So, I am able to buy a Late 2012 retina MBP with the upgraded 2.9ghz i7, 8GB of RAM, and 500SSD. Seller is asking $1450, I think I can get it for $1400.
Now, the new Late 2013 retina Macbook Pro was just released as you all must know.
The Base model has a 2.4ghz i5 haswell chip, 4gb ram, and 128gb Pcie-based flash storage.
It retails for $1349 in Canada, and I think they have a student discount of $100, so with taxes in i'd be looking at around $1400 as well.
I think both computers will have more than enough power/space for my needs, although I want make sure I buy the best value/ will have the best resale value in the future.
What do you guys think? Is the Late 2013 rMBP upgrade a huge difference, and a must have in this situation?
    Help would be appreciated
    Thanks!

Thank you for your response! No actually, they are both the 13 inch models.
Specs wise though, do you think I will notice a difference between the two, if I am not using too heavy applications?
I will be majoring in Computer Science next year, so that's something im trying to keep in mind too.
I just read here in the discussion that the new retinas are having freezing issues as well. Hmm..
Might just hold off to make a decision..

  • Retina Macbook Pro (late 2013) screen blinking

I recently got a Retina Macbook Pro (late 2013), and the screen has been spontaneously blinking. It's exceptionally distracting, and I've been unable to correlate it to any running program. Has anyone else had this issue?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your MacBook is in warranty, so take it to an Apple Store or reseller to get the MacBook repaired or replaced free of charge. It looks like a hardware issue, so it's better to do this

  • Has the new Early 2013 Retina Macbook Pro still lag and display issues?

Hello. I've never had a Mac before and I'm thinking of buying the new "early 2013" 15-inch (2.7 Ghz, 16Gb Ram, $2799) Retina Macbook Pro. I live in Argentina but I'm going to NYC in a couple of weeks and I want to get one there. The thing is, that I can not be returning it 2 or 3 times like I read a lot of peple had to, because I'll be coming back home after 2 weeks and here they will only fix it, not replace it for a new one, and that could take months.
So, I want to know if you guys can help me decide if I should go for it or not, if these image retention and burn in and ui lag issues appear to be fixed with this new model or if it is still the same. If I don't buy this one I'll be getting the new Samsung Series 7 Chronos they showed in CES 2013, still not available in the market. Thanks a lot!

I just checked and I have the LG SJA2, too. I didn't notice any Image retention at first, I tested it with the chessboard test for 5 or 6 minutes, it showed no IR. But with 10 minutes I can see a bit of IR. Nothing that can affect the normal use of the computer, I mean I have to put the chessboard for 10 minutes and then change to grey to notice it, but it does exist and is the SJA2 from LG. If it doesn't get worst, I think it doesn't even matter. I just hope it doesn't get worst.
FWIW, I noticed that until I stopped looking at the chessboard before it switched; my eyes had image retention. But  in that awfully long thread on the subject, some have insisted that if it's an LG, it's trouble so I guess there's no guarantee. (BTW, I was writing this when you tried the test again - ocular image retention?)
Not to hijack the thread, but shortly after I posted that "good news" about SJA2, my rMBP simply refused to start at all; it was totally inert. Charging, not charging, SMC reset, nothing helped. Tech support's only solution was bring it in to be fixed.
On a hunch, and remembering something about magnets in the top of the display activating a reed switch in the base, probably near the trackpad, I lifted the front of the Mac about 1/4" inch and let it drop. Bingo! The Mac has operated properly so far. I suspect the reed switch was stuck in the wrong position, and some evidence suggests it was that way out of the box and my fix corrected it.

  • Display gone crazy on Late 2013 Retina Macbook Pro

Could somebody please tell me what is wrong with my Late 2013 15-inch Retina Macbook Pro? Please check the pics here:

Looks as if you've a graphics card and/or screen problem - I would lean more towards the GPU.
You should take the machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them evaluate the problem. This diagnosis should be free as should an estimate for repair (if you're not still under warranty).
    Good luck,

  • Photoshop cc laggy in late 2013 retina Macbook Pro

    Hello Community
i bought late 2013 retina macbook pro,
    and installed photoshop cc,
    it is abnormally laggy.
by that i mean, even a small psd file, empty canvas, small brush, when i draw a line, it is laggy.
I suppose it is a driver problem
    anybody has same problem?
    and is there any solution?

    Hi guys,
Ive posted a fairly similar topic today. On my new Macbook pro retina 13" with 2.6Ghz, 8GB RAM and 256SSD CS6 was abnormally slow and laggy when editing files that my 8 year old laptop handled perfectly.
I noticed that when I removed my wacom tablet and edited with the trackpad or a mouse the lag went away! The mpb was snappy and responsive when editing the file. \
My guess is that the wacom drivers arent updated for retina macs and they cause some sort of malfunction with photoshop.
Ill keep you guys updated if i find something better.

  • Late 2013 retina MacBook Pro constantly restarting when in sleep mode

So I just got my brand new specced out retina MacBook Pro in the mail last night. I began setting it up but didn't finish before I had to go to bed. I left it with the screen closed (and assumed it would go into sleep mode soon after), an external hard drive hooked up, and plugged into the power adapter, and went to bed. During the night, it woke me up perhaps 10 times or so by making the startup sound and spinning up the external drive. The only time a Mac makes that sound is when it starts up, so as far as I can tell, it kept crashing during the night (presumably from trying to wake to do stuff in power nap mode), starting up, going to sleep, and repeating the cycle. When I turned it on in the morning, it gave me a message saying that it restarted due to a sleep to wake failure. Is this a known issue? Is there a way to fix it? Is the laptop defective? Or is it a software issue? Should I take it into an Apple store to figure it out?

You have 14 days to return the computer w/no questions asked.  Plus you have 90 days of FREE phone tech support on top of your standard 1 year warranty unless you also purchased AppleCare which gives you an additional 2 years of coverage plus FREE phone support.
