Easy question about capturing audio

Forgive me if this sounds noobish....
I would just like to know what kind of audio file Soundtrack Pro WRITES, not what kind of files it can export to. I'm just trying to save a step and eliminate the exporting time.
Thanks!

It records AIFF, and puts those files in the folder specified under Preferences > Recording > Sessions Location.

  • Planning for Macbook (pro?) Questions about recording audio + multitasking

    Hi Everyone
I am seriously contemplating switching to a Mac book (Pro?) in the next few months, and I want to clarify issues about recording audio.
I record music and other stuff at our local church using a mixer and feed stereo straight into a pc which records using the excellent Adobe Audition (... well it works for me  :-)
To start with I expect I'll be using GarageBand and later look at other solutions such as ProTools I used to use on the PC.
    QUESTION
I would welcome experienced users to comment on how well GrageBand or similar can multi task while recording is taking place. In other words what can I do - Not do, while recording.
    Be honest please.
I worry I might get an exagerated reply from an Apple evangelist and I'm not seeking perfection, just knowledge of practical experiences.
I'd like an idea of what limits present users have found running recording apps like Garageband or similar.
As an example :  what experiences running large wordprocessing application or Internet (e.g. FTP or Safari) while recording?
    Replies appreciated
    Pete

If it's an important recording or a once-only opportunity to record something then I would seriously advise against multi-tasking on any computer, PC or Mac, whilst recording.  Dedicate all processing power to capturing the recording, and if you want to browse the web/update your resumé whilst recording then use another computer!

  • Easy question about Reformatting

    Hello all,
I am trying to reformat my HD after I have deleted Windows XP off of a partition. The reason for this is an upgrade to Vista and a larger allotment of HD space. My question is:
I am using Backup v3.1.1. (v369) and I have FULL backup files of my Home folder, and my Music folder (as backup for my backup) for all my iTunes libraries. These are located on a portable HD. Are these the correct files to have backed up in order to have my MAC the way it was before I started the process? If so, then once the reformatting is complete, how do I get it all back onto my MAC permanently? Will all my apps and tweaks work as before?
I am sure this is a simple question, however, I have never had to do this with a MAC, and I want to make sure I have all bases covered before I begin this. Any other comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks All!

You call this an easy question ???
    Just messin with ya
Your home folder is the most important folder containing your music, documents, preferences etc. but a lot is also stored in the system folder and library folder outside your home folder, if you want to be ensured of an exact copy of your current system the best way to go at this is to clone your system partition.
The app i use for this is carbonCopyCloner
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
To add to this.. i've heard there is software for the mac that allows you to make adjustments to the size of your partitions without having to format the drive, i don't know the names of these products but i do know that it's very risky to use them, if you decide to use an app like that make sure you have proper backups of everything just in case it goes wrong.

  • One last question about capturing from tape

I have a box full of family VHS tapes that I will be capturing into the computer to digitally archive. However, I want to make sure I am doing it the best possible way. These are the two things most important to me:
    1. Quality
    2. Longevity
    1. Quality
I have a VHS/MiniDV JVC SR-VS30 deck connected via firewire into my 2014 iMac. I know that firewire is typically the best option when capturing DV footage into the computer. However, is this still true for VHS and other forms of old tape. I can hook anything up to this deck via composite/s-video in and go out through the firewire connection. However, I wasn't sure if firewire was the best coming from a VHS tape. I also have an old video capture card that has a straight s-video/composite input. Which would be more native to the VHS/analog tapes as far as keeping original quality and the best possible image?
When I use the JVC deck, some programs will capture the vhs tapes and others won't because they won't recognize unless I'm using the DV side. For example, FCPX recognizes the deck, but when I go to import unless it's a dv, it will say "no tape" and I cannot capture anything. iMovie will capture files as .DV. Quicktime will also recognize the deck and capture files as apple prores MOV files. When I compare the QT and iMovie, the QT files look better in my opinion, though I don't know if they truly are. The iMovie dv files have jagged edges like tv lines or something during quick movement and like others say about firewire it looks a little "milky" (though I know this isn't necessarily a bad thing). The QT clips don't necessarily look sharper, but they don't have the hideous jagged edges.
So my question before I start this large project is:
Which capture methods above would you use, or what else would you recommend for best quality?
    2. Longevity
Which file format would you recommend saving these files (or just keeping them as they are at capture) for long term storage? When I come back to these files in 10 years and need to convert them to something new, I want them to have the greatest chance of being compatible with whatever lies ahead. There are so many different file formats.
Many thanks for any help along this long process

I want to make sure I am doing it the best possible way.
I have done lots of that.
For maximum quality here is my procedure:  ADVC300 > iMovie 06 > iDVD 09/11.
To get your VHS video into iMovie, use the Grassvalley ADVC300 .  With the ADVC300 Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11 (I have used it a few times with iMovie 11).
The ADVC300 has been discontinued by the manufacturer. The included software (which is not really necessary but does enhance performance) is not compatible with OS 10.7 or newer.  You can still find the ADVC300 for sale in a few outlets as well as eBay. It will sell between 50% and 100% ABOVE its retail price. Yes, it's that good.
If you can’t find the ADVC300, use the Grassvalley ADVC110.
I have a drawer full of analog-to-digital converters.   After using the Grass Valley ADVC300 I find nothing else acceptable.
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source (VCR, Tivo, Satellite Receiver) and convert it to FireWire (iMovie will treat it like a camera).
I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09/11, why?
iMovie 09, 11, and 13 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.  (Also the latest iMovie CANNOT set Chapeters !)
After lots of experimenting I get the best results using OS 10.6, iMovie 06, and iDVD 09/11.  My movies look just like Hollywood!
My primary computer is a Mac Pro, so I just use one of the four hard drives and boot OS 10.6. You can also partition a single hard drive to achieve the same results.
This may seem like more trouble than you want to go through.  However, I find the superior quality to be well worth it.

  • Easy Question about resizing video

I searched 'Resizing Video' and there was too many unrelated results to a really simple question.
In my old program "Premiere', to resize and move a video around was very easy. You could adjust the scale and X-Y values numerically, or you could use a Free Transform like in Photoshop. Simply dragging bounding boxes for size and aspect and also dragging the clip to decide it's location.
The only way I know how to do this in FCP is I double click a clip in the sequence, it loads into the viewer, I go to the Motion Tab and then I can adjust the Scale, which is cool. But then I'm left with the Distort section to adjust position (and aspect if need be). In the Distort section there are 8 numeric fields of info to figure out and fill out just to get one clip in a different position correctly.
I'm thinking there must be another way to adjust the location (or aspect) of a video clip without spending a bit of time on exact coordinates, I want to eye-ball where I want the clip to go and simply move it there. Is the Distort feature the only way to do this? If not, which is the fastest way to move and change the dimension of a clip.
Thanks for reading, I hope there is another way, I'm not use to these calculations and they're slowing me down.
    Monty

I searched 'Resizing Video' and there was too many unrelated results to a really simple question.
That's because it's not a simple question at all and yet every one of those threads was related to the OP's question. As you discovered, there are lots of ways to interpret "resize," during capture, editing, effects, output, viewing, encoding, printing. But the solution was even simpler than you thought. All you had to do was open the manual or the online help system. Start taking the manuals to the gym with you. FCP is not Premiere. You're going to hate FCP, you're going to love FCP but it will never behave like Premiere beyond the elements of the functional paradigm. Forget Premiere.

  • Question about multiple audio tracks

    Hello,
I see that imovie has only 2 audio tracks available when creating a movie. I need more than two since I will be working with a voiceover track, a soundtrack and at least one background/environment track all at one time. I won't be able to use the sound recorded with the video so that "track" is not an option.
My question is; Am I out of luck here and need to spend the 1K for studio pro to add more multiple audio tracks?
Also, I tried working with garageband but since all of my audio tracks import in at a minimum of 40 beats per minute, the voiceovers are all sped up and sound chipmunky.
    Thanks for any help!

Well I didn't mean to irritate you...LOL And yes, I realize that this is the iM 6 forum but the gist of my question was related to multiple audio tracks in iM and thought I would ask about it in the forum pertaining to the latest release.
I had already posted a question in the GB forum regarding the bpm problem and found no answers so I was pretty much about to shelve that idea and forgo the whole garageband thing; this without knowing about the new "swap" features. I just updated to iM 6 yesterday.
As far as the "on-tape" raw audios: I was working on my movie in iM4. I wanted to add more audio bits but I don't have a proper mic for my G5 so I recorded the audio bits on dv8 tape through my camcorder. I imported the video (the image was the inside of my lens cap!), extracted the audio, took those audio files and imported them into GarageBand. That's when I noticed the bpm problem.
I'm sorry about the lack of info I originally gave but like I said, I had pretty much gave up on the idea of using GarageBand. I'm pretty new at this and I'm trying to decide what I need in terms of software to get what I want out of my movie. I'd be willing to pay for FCxp but still looking into whether I need to do just that or whether I can get by by using imovie and now it looks like GarageBand too.
    ah, thanks for that
    what irritates me, Prince wrote:
The audio tracks were voiceovers that came from my
    dv8tape, imported into imovie4.
... ehm, but this is the iM 6(six) section, as said,
iM 6 allows now "swapping" files with GB3... (I'm way
back in the 90ies.... see my specs... )
so, video is in some iM, and he wants to use the
    actual "on-tape" raw audios...
I thnik we need a little more detail...

  • Question about capturing with JVC GY-HD200U

I am looking at this particular camcorder, JVC GY-HD200U, and was wondering if there is any issues capturing footage into FCP6. Does any one own or worked with the JVC GY-HD200U or early model?
share you thoughts about this camcorder if you have worked with it.
    much thanks

Excuse my naivety here, but how does one go about importing HDV 720 as 'pro res'?
Can this be done by changing the import / capture settings, or does it require transferring the material to HD?
I'm using footage from my JVC HD GY100 in 24p. I've spent over a week trying to import the material into FCP through a JVC BR-HD50 deck with absolutely no luck, and it's getting really frustrating!!
I'm dealing with over 80 tapes of footage, so I don't have the option of going through each tape and logging individual clips. I've been trying to import entire tapes at a time.
I keep getting a 'stream error' prompt when attempting to capture.
I've tried with both start / stop detect on and off, I've tried to 'capture now', which seems to work until the very end of the tape / capture, at which time another error is reported. I've also attempted to set in and out points a minute or two from the beginning and end of the tapes, then batch capture the logged tape. Again, no dice.
Unfortunately I haven't had luck with anything, and I'm getting very frustrated.
I'm not a professional editor, so perhaps I'm missing something very basic? I have no clue why this format is so difficult to import!! I've never spent over a week trying to figure out how to import footage!
I don't care whether each tape I import is an entire tape or cut up into clips at time breaks, but I can't seem to get anything!!!
I really appreciate anyone's suggestions here. I'm at my wits end.
And again, I don't usually do this type of work, so if you could describe in detail any suggestions / solutions I would be very grateful. Many thanks.

  • Question about capturing from FX1000

Hello everyone. This is my first post here tho I have been searching these forums for some time now.
I looked for my question but i could not find one that helped me.
    Anyway.
So I just got a HDR-FX1000 and I love it!
I just filmed my last show and when I plugged it into my television with the HDMI cable i was drooling.
so now I want to import the footage onto FCE but the problem is that It's looking like a normal ol' HD camera. The colors are not even as bright. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with my computer screen but I have a new Macbook pro so I doubt it.
I exported it onto quicktime and still the same. I am now dumping it onto iDVD and I'm going to see how that looks on my television.
Anyway is there some kind of settings I should be using when Capturing from my FX1000? and is there a good export setting to retain the same HDV quality?
Thank you very much in advanced. I appreciate any and all help!
also, if you are in the Los Angeles area and wanna do any shooting with my FX1000 let me know. I'll go if its not too far and won't charge you anything. I'd like the experience of using the camera
    Luie

I'm starting to wonder if it has anything to do with the Fire Wire I have. I had a bunch of Fire Wire cables around the house but I had to buy a new one because of the MacBook Pro. It's very thin too...
the HDMI cable is really thick. Anyone think this an be a part of the issue?

  • Basic Questions About Editing Audio

I am new to Final Cut Express and can get around fine just had a few basic questions to do more things with it.
-First, how can I detach the audio from the video file for a specific clip?
-Second, is there a way to adjust the volume in specific spots of clips like in iMovie?
That should be all for now...Thank you very much

    RC
Shift-L toggles clip linking on or off.
You use keyframes to adjust audio volume.
First, enable keyframes by clicking the zig zag button at the bottom left of the timeline. You should see red lines appear in the audio clips of the timeline.
Next, select the Pen tool and enter keyframes onto the red lines, dots appear.
The dots can be dragged up or down forward or backward to fine tune.

  • Question about Export - Audio mixdown

Ive been wondering, why is there option boxes for 32 and 16 bit? I understand dithering. But is this just to let adobe know what bit rate it is? why?
Maybe, is it for this?? :  someone being in a hurry, for a quick mixdown for a cd-ready track they could hit 16 bit and enable dither, and youll notice  the "Dither Options" is the same dithering program inside Edit -> Convert Sample Type (F11) in multitrack view.
And 32 bit is just to keep it good if you plan on editing it later, but i dont get this: Why adobe needs to know at mixdown, the actual waves should already be carrying the bit information, right?
But what if the track was already dithered using Waves, Izotope or some other on the master fader for a quickfix...would leaving it at 32 be no problem? And if I put it at 16 would it try to chop it off more?
    Sorry, please someone explain.
Adobe audition is not as simple as protools...sorry about my rant the other day, i understand i made a few mad but they probably took it the wrong way and I probably said it the wrong way, I was really looking for help. it just got me frustrated. I am an adobe auditon user too, as well.
And just wondering, What .wav format do you guys save your Final master in?
me, Ive been using ACM Format .WAV (16 bit 44.1 of course)
    once again, sorry

    djak24k wrote:
Sorry, you lost me there, what do you mean by 2 16 bit files? like 2 in one session? or one on stacked on another? and run out of steam?
Yes, two in one session. If one of them is 6dB louder (or quieter) than the other, then you'd need at least 17 bits to represent all the possible data in the output.
And since i DJ, should I start recording in 16 bit? I have always kept 44.1 32 bit when in adobe because its the default, and mixed down, and had to master and dither in edit view in order to make it go on a cd... And the music is already mastered, but I go ahead and record in 32 bit, which i dont think would cause a problem - BUT dithering on top of dithering like i do to make it 16 again, that could be bad couldnt it?
You shouldn't ever dither twice - you end up with twice as much added noise as you need, and it very likely won't work properly.
Steve, whats your final 16bit-44.1 format? Ive noticed some of my cds havent been playing in 1, later on the cd players motor burnt out (impala 2004- im sure it was just getting old) and got a completely new cd player (the stock tray kind) and i still get errors, but they play everywhere else... and ive been doing ACM ever since I learned what redbook was. Well, at least in adobe.
Ah, I meant to mention that. You shouldn't ever use ACM for anything, because it gets processed by the very dubious processing in the OS. What you should use is Windows PCM, because this is saved directly. So, the only acceptable format is 44.1k 16-bit stereo PCM wav.
The safe way to process your audio is to do a 32-bit mixdown, and then in EV do the dither using Ozone. After that, convert the file (which is effectively a truncation) to 16-bit and do no more processing at all. The rule is "Dither Once - Dither Last". If you look in the Ozone Dithering Guide you will find more information about exactly what to do.

  • Quick (hopefully easy) question about rotating video...

I'm going to be shooting some video soon that I will later be editing with FCP. I'm going to shoot the video on a Canon Vixia HF10 (AVCHD) camcorder.
In the situation I'll be shooting, with the mount I'll be using, it would be much easier for me to shoot this video with the camera fully upside-down.
If I shoot the video fully upside down, can I easily rotate it 180 degrees in FCP with no loss of quality?
    Thanks!

An interesting thing about video that is shot upside down is the ballistics of the camera movement can be weirdly disconcerting. For instance, if it's a helmet- or wing-style mount, pans and tilts just feel odd.
As Eric suggests, flipping the image 180 degrees is easy but practice and evaluate.

  • Question about capturing clips

I’m using Pre7 and capturing video from an HDV tape camcorder via FireWire connection. On the Capture window, I am able to record (capture) from the camera with no problems. But is there a way I can capture from the camera (miniDV tapes), without having to do each scene one at a time? I mean am I able to set things up so that I can have Pre7 record and create each clip automatically as each scene changes?

If you have the option to Split Scene by Timecode selected in the capture workspace, the video should break at every scene (whenever the camcorder was put on pause) as you're capturing. If that doesn't work, you can try Split Scene by Content.
You can also break already captured footage by right-clicking on it in the Project media panel and selecting Scene Detect.
