Editing/Archiving Codec

Hello,
I have been searching through various forums and can't really find a possible suggestion/answer for what I am seeking. Additionally I apologize in advance if this is posted in the wrong forum, not sure if I should post here or in the Prelude forum.
I have been getting the hang of Prelude and I am really liking the workflow and want to include Prelude in my daily workflow.
Right now I have a Sony handy cam which shoots AVCHD. I have a folder that has about 15 minutes or so of AVCHD footage straight from the camera and is just under 11GB in size. I want to use the Prelude workflow to ingest the footage and transcode it to one file with a unique name...rather than 20files of  00000.MTS, 00002.MTS, etc.
I am really struggling to find a decent codec. Just to compare file sizes with different codecs, I have imported the entire folder and did several transcode tests. All of them of are anywhere from 30GB on up in file size.
I have tried DNxHD, and various settings of it, AVC Intra and various settings of that as well but the file sizes they have produced are anywhere from 3 times to 6 times larger than the original AVCHD footage.
Can anyone recommend a codec that can be high quality for editing yet is not so ridiculous in file size? I really want to use PL to transocde my video to usable file names, etc but it's not worth it if I have to go from approx 11GB of storage space to 30-60GB of storage space for the same footage.
Footage is AVCHD 1080P / 59.94
I hope I have explained this correctly.
All the apps are CC with latest updates.
Thank you,
Shane

Anything smaller will reduce the quality.  Keeping the quality will only inflate the size.
Your best option is to just use the original media.

  • Uncompressed vs Pro Res 422 (LT) as archival codec and as editing codec

    Hi -
I'm working on a project where we will be capturing 600 hours of footage from Hi8 tapes. The tapes are in somewhat iffy condition so we're only going to get one pass with them and that's it.
We've agreed with the owner of the tapes to digitize all of them for archival purposes, after which we will make a backup copy for us to edit with. We want to use Pro Res 422 (LT) as our editing codec, but there's some question about what codec we should use for archival purposes -- Pro Res 422 (LT) or uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2.
Basically, the debate is, given that the Hi8 format retains a relatively small amount of data, is there a benefit in terms of quality if we archive the tapes in uncompressed, or will the quality be just as good if we deliver in Pro Res LT to the archive?
    Thanks!

Because while we would prefer Pro Res as our editing codec, the people to whom we will deliver an archival set of the material may insist on uncompressed.
Please -- no more questions about why I'm asking this question.
What I am hoping for here is a brief, to-the-point comparison of the pros and cons in terms of video quality of the two codecs (but something a little more informative than 'filet mignon' and 'hamburger').
I'm aware of the white papers, but I'd like to get the opinion of people with experience and knowledge who don't work for Apple who could boil it down --
Is Pro Res a good codec for archiving material, and how much if anything would be lost if we delivered to the archival house on Pro Res rather than uncompressed?
What argument, if any, can we make to an archival house that is leaning toward uncompressed that Pro Res will work as well for them? At the risk of answering my own question, would we be correct in saying that the image quality would be effectively as good with either codec (given that we're digitizing from Hi-8 tapes) and that delivering in Pro Res would save them a great deal of storage space?
As a reminder, we're talking about 600 hours of Hi-8 footage here. Thanks.

  • Re-edit archived iDVD project?

    Hello,
How do I re-edit the iMovie underlying or embedded inside of an archived iDVD project on an external hard drive?
I have scoured MAC.help & TMManuals, and cannot find.
    Thanks,

    Rich,
What I think you are correctly saying is that these .avi movies, while not editable in themselves, when dragged into an iMovie project they can be edited to a limited extent --by splitting them, inserting photos or new clips in between, new audio, etc, and then dragging the new iMovie project back into the iDVD.
    Yes
And this could be done whether or not you had the original iMovie project available.
    Yes
You just could not as extensively edit it as if you actually had the original iMovie file to work with.
    Yes

    Hello,
My first time using Adobe Premier CS6.
I have edited a film on Avid 6 but it's far too big.
I want to import this film into Adobe Premier CS6 for re editing so I can export it as a H.264 and make it small enough to post online (currently it's 9gb)
I have tried importing it but I'm running into CODEC issues eeven though it's a .mov.  What can I do?

  • How to edit archived dvd project adding/replacing video/audio??

I want to reduce my workload videoing and creating DVD's of a dance performance this year using the archived show from last year in iDVD and just importing the new video w/chapters from iMovie. Has anyone done this? Any advice?

    Brian,
If you "archived" the iDVD project then the answer is yes it's pretty easy - I recommend you do that this year!
If you didn't archive the project, then you've got some work to do. There are some applications like DVDxDV, MPEG Streamclip+the Apple MPEG2 Playback Component, and ExportToQT (which come with MPEG2Works) that will convert the VOB MPEG 2 video files on your DVD back to DV files that iMovie or FCP/FCE can use again. But it is time consuming to convert back, and some of these apps are easier than others.
You might try DVDxDV to see what's involved. There is a trial version. Even so, you'd need to re-build the menus, etc...... and if you have all new video, I don't think it will help much.
So my bet is you'll be better off just starting from scratch this year.....but then archive the project to use next year!

  • Problems importing Hi8 to a PC for editing / archiving

    Hey Video Experts,
I'm trying to import Hi8 video from my cam-corder through a PCI-E TV Tuner card (s-video) installed in my PC.
In PElements, I'm importing the video by "getting media," using the "Webcam or WDM device" option.    The video does import, but very poor quality, excessive artifacts, packet loss, start/stop, little or now audio... something is obviously wrong.
From several other forums I've seen, it may be that the TV Tuner card is sufficient to digitize the video - this was the intent of including the card in my PC.
    So, my questions are:
         1.   Is there a way to use the TV Tuner card and achieve satisfactory results?
         2.  Or, do I need some other way to do the conversion from analog to digital.
Footnote.... I purchased Pinnacle Studio several years ago.  Using the same set up (PC with TV Tuner card), I got very good results with this.  However, the SW went out of date and upgrades were not supported and the SW would no longer load and fuction in it's original state.   This set-up seemed to work before; maybe not with this SW....

It's better not to ask the same question in different discussions. It makes it hard for us to see the whole discussion in a single thread as you might get different answers in the different threads.
However here is a copy of the reply I made to your other thread:
Connect your camera through a FireWire connection. You can then use PRE9 to control and capture directly. If your camera doesn't have FireWire then using an Analog --> Digital bridge is your best option.
Here are links to the FAQ that go further into these options:
What tools can I use to convert my video to DV-AVI?
What is the best device for capturing analog video?
    And from Tips & Tricks:
Analog Signal to Digital a Primer
The solution I use is Camera --> Canopus ADVC-300 --> WinDV. This creates the DV-AVI Type 2 video file that can be directly used in PRE with no further conversions needed.

  • Codec Question

I've been exporting some MPG2 files, which I thought was a pretty universal format these days, but not everyone in my office can open them.  Windows Media Player tells them that they're missing a codec.  The export settings list the codec as "MainConcept MPEG Video".  My question is, are there many MPG codecs, or is this THE MPG codec?  If one downloads the latest WMP updates, shouldn't it be able to run an MPG?  My version even runs AVCHD files, so I wonder why MPG should be a problem even for slightly older versions.  Of course, my ignorance can be breathtaking at times.  Anyway, is the problem in what I'm exporting or is the problem with what they're running, which I think is WMP version 10 on Win XP?  For what it's worth, I'm running Windows 7 64bit with WMP 12.
<rant> As an aside, why so many codecs anyway?  Couldn't we just have 3 - 5 file formats and codecs to cover everything?  I mean, the only delivery mechanisms in general use at this point are DVD, BluRay, web, and smart phones, right?  Seems like one format should be ideal for each application, at which point were just talking about tweaking compression settings.  It seems like this topic doesn't need to be as confusing as it is. </rant>
Whew.  Got that out of my system.  Thanks in advance for any insight, folks.

If that were true, no one would be using AE to do work on Hollywood movies, independent films, for delivery to broadcasters using any number of different nonlinear editing systems, for playback on laptop computers at trade shows, for multiscreen presentations at corporate meetings, for animated billboards....
    ....you get the idea.
AE is used by far more different types of multimedia producers than you've been exposed to so far, and they all have their specific needs and requirements.  Hence, a wide diversity of codecs.
    Hi,
I stem from the pro audio industry. Over there, the manufacturers seem to be a little more organized.
    We've got 3 'Codecs' that we use. AIFF - WAVE - MP3
In the video industry there are a million codecs around and they are ALL poorly documented and most are crappy as H***.
OK... Video is more Processor intensive than audio... Get over it. Build your hardware so it matches that of a generally accepted codec.
Many Camera producers like ARRI are finally getting the idea. They are building cameras recording directly to ProRes 4444.
Imagine the audio industry being as ignorant as the video industry. We'd have every little manufacturer running around building his own audio codec,
persisting that HIS codec is BEEEETTER than all the rest. I think the video industry heard Tina Turner's 'Simply The Best' once too MANY.
Here in the VID ind. you have a bunch of small time companies releasing PAID codecs luring the unknown into thinking that THIS will give him better quality and performance. BS...
I could NOT give a flying F*** about the brand or NAME of the codec I use... It is a CODEC for petes sake. And as of NOW... All those codex are doing are GETTING IN THE WAY OF CREATIVITY. Then you have THAT great codec for your NLE of choice.. And you are a happy camper... UUUUntil you enter After Effects and find out that its render engine has HUGE trouble with ProRes 4444... Now what do I do... Should I dump my NLE so that I can work in AE or should I look for an alt. to AE... OK... I am going to dump my NLE and find another that jails nicely with AE... Oh... There ARE none... What do I do now... OK ... Let's look for another codec that  works with both.. GREAT... I found one.. Costs $799 but what the heck they promise that it works. Then you download the trial and find out that it doesn't...
There is CHAOS at best in the Film/Video industry. But that is changing slowly...
I am a perfectionist and I can find a HUGE scratch in a freshly un-wrapped iPad display, where there is none. The only lossy codec out there today with archive-grade-quality after 8 generations of encoding is.... Drum Whirl...... ProRes. Great in performance and looks like the ORIGINAL source without that Mosquito SWARM of noise that all the others are producing (AVIDs DNxHD is also fantastic)..... But thats it...
So there you go. TWO intermiate/archival codecs and they ALREADY exist. Throw in H264 and you have your AIF, WAV & MP3 of the Audio Industry.
All the industry has got to do is accept that and move on... Because today I feel like the codec war is getting in MY way of being creative. And in the way of great creative and intuitive software like PPRO and AE.
Just my 1000,0000 cents... but this here topic is getting on my beeber...

  • Best practices for Edit Proxies in Final Cut Server?

We just bought Final Cut Server, and for the most part are pretty happy with the product. We are a small production facility, and primarily work with DVCPro HD footage at 720P. One feature we'd like to use would be the edit proxies feature in FCS, but they don't seem to be working for us.
    _Hosting Computer_
We're using a mac mini server with snow leopard server and final cut server 1.5.
    Problem
Whenever we specify in the Administrator Pane of FCS, Under Preferences and Analyze, we'd like to use a custom transcode setting for the edit proxies, keeping Frame Size, TC, and Frame rate the same, but changing the codec to h264 least quality, the effects are a different compression than expected. We tested out the compression settings using Compressor on the server, and we get the desired results:
    Input: DVCPro HD 720P Quicktime 960X720 (1248 x 702) 23.98 fps
    Output: H264 Quicktime 960X720 (1248 x 702) 23.98 fps
Also did the same outputs using Apple Prorez, Photo Jpeg and got the following outputs:
    Output: Apple Prorez Quicktime 960X720 (1248 x 702) 23.98 fps
    Output: Photo Jpeg Quicktime 960X720 (1248 x 702) 23.98 fps
(We also made new transcode settings for these compressor settings and we not able to control the compressions through FCS with these settings as well. Our target codec is H264.)
After connecting the new compression settings on the Mac Mini Server to a new transcode setting in the FCS Admin Pane, we restarted the Java Client, logged in to FCS as an FCSadmin, opened the Admin Pane, and under preferences/analyze change the edit proxy setting to the New H264 setting that worked perfectly when using Compressor. After uploading a final cut project, with one associated media file (DVCPro HD 720P Quicktime 960X720 (1248 x 702) 23.98 fps), the resulting edit proxy did not match the specification: 384 x 216, 23.98fps, TC matches source.
Also did not dynamically connect when checking out the project from FCS and selecting edit proxies and keep media with project and saving to the desktop.
    Question 1:
Does anyone have any best practice transcode setting(s) to create for DVCPro HD 720P using edit proxies that dynamically connect and are smaller size than the original? H264? Photo Jpeg?
    Question 2:
Why is Final Cut Server's Compressor giving a different output, when the same settings work well with just Compressor?
    Question 3:
Does H264 work in creating dynamically linking edit proxies (ie, no need to reconnect)?
I can imagine this information to be very useful to the community, so any input or solutions will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

H.264 is a puzzling choice of codec for edit proxies. H.264 is not an edit-friendly codec since it is a complex long-GOP structure and will require a ton of rendering just to play back the timeline. ProRES 422 Proxy would be a much better choice for editing. I'm afraid I can't account for the differences between Compressor and FCServer in this case, but my gut tells me the non-I-frame codec you are trying to use for edit proxies might have something to do with it. Maybe for an edit-proxy workflow to operate properly on the server-side the codec must be I-frame? Is there any reason you do not want to use ProRES 422 Proxy? They are about 1/3 the footprint of 720p24 DVCPRO-HD, which is already very efficient. For that frame rate and frame size they would be roughly half the heft of good ol' DV25.
So my answer to all three questions would be to try ProRES 422 Proxy for your edit proxies and see if everything lines up.

  • What's a good codec to install for old projects?

I have some projects cut on CS4.  Tried opening with Premiere CS and I'm getting error in regards to the codec.  I'm assuming this is in regards the .avi files.  The files where originally captured with the Canon mkII.  I used Neo Scene to covert them to .avi files.  It's just this old projects from a couple years ago that  have trouble.  I cut a video this past year with new footage with no problems.  At one time in the past, I installed Main Concepts codec to solve the problem.

  • Movie editing, what do you think is the best program?

Free is better of course, as free beer at least.
I have an idea for a fun movie, but I never tried anything about. I understood Windows' users tent to use `Moviemaker.' Is there something similar for Arch Linux?
I just need to cut movie pieces and put them together and adding a new audio. It would be nice the possibility of speeding up or slowing down the movie.
I am all ears, tell me!

Mencoder provides many options for movie editing and codec transfers.
Avidemux permits adding audio.  Jpeg, png images can be included in the video mix.
    Mencoder provides for joining .avi's.
Mencoder provides means to edit the format of digital camera movies and stills to produce .avi movies.
Audacity can be used to modify sound.
KolourPaint in kde permits changing resolution to make stills compatible with .avi movie format.  Other programs do the same.
Best to you in making movies.

  • 720 PN codec comes in "SPED UP"

Hi, hopefully someone knows this. Please...
Shot a project on the HVX 200 in 720 PN (60)? Working on it in post and the sequence auto sets to the codec, however all of the footage plays back in +high speed+.
Was hoping it was possible to adjust the sequence settings to adjust to a standard frame rate? It's a music video, so the length and speed of clips are important.
Thanks! This is my fist time editing PN codec footage and I'm pretty concerned.

Hold on. Are you telling me that you shot on P2, then imported the footage from the cards into FCP, but DIDN'T COPY the information off the cards? The CONTENTS folder and LASTCLIP file? You just imported and moved on?
That is like capturing from tape and throwing the tape away.
You need to back up the ENTIRE CARD, THEN import. You keep the card backups as they are your tapes, in case you lose the footage or...something like this happens. You have to watch this workflow:
    P2 Workflow with FCP 6
I have no clue what to do with the footage after you imported and it is like this. Never had this situation come up. I did, but then I reimported and things were fine. Do you have sound? You might try pressing CMD-J and speeding up your footage. No clue how to use Compressor here. The footage was imported wrong...no clue how to fix that.
Re-shoot. It happens. I once shot an entire student film...3000 feet of film...with the film facing the wrong way. The emulsion facing away from the gate. So the entire film was dark, red and out of focus. I had to pay for 3000 more feet of film and we had to reshoot.
