Editing the waveform of a MIDI sound

Hi all,
I'm trying to edit one of the MIDI sounds, specifically, I want the sound to cutoff sooner rather than having it linger.
What is the best way to do this?
My initial thought is to convert the software instrument (MIDI) into a wave file, then edit that wave file by deleting the "lingering" portion of the sound so that it cuts off the way I want it to. Then I can just paste that sound into the (not sure what it's called exactly) window that has all the tracks. It'd be even better to be able to assign that small wave file to a key on my MIDI controller. I've done something like this on Garageband so I assume it's possible to do on Logic.
Any help on how to pull this off with something similar to what I described above? Or even better, is there a simple way to do this? Thanks!

Hi
What Instrument are you using to create the 'sound'?
Most of Logic's Software Instruments have an 'Envelope' section. This is where you can adjust the ADSR of the sound (Attack (lead in), Decay, Sustain (how long actual sound lasts for), Release (length of trail...).
Here are some ways:
You can use the Sustain & Release parameter in the plugin to adjust the length.
You can use Track Automation and volume to cut the sound out too. (View > Track Automation, draw nodes for Volume, drag lines to create a fade out).
You can use Hyper draw (Region based automation) to do this.
You can bounce the MIDI region to an audio file (Solo track, File > Bounce), import audio file and in Sample Editor use the fade out function. (This destructively edits the audio file).
You can bounce the region to audio and in the Arrange area use the fade tool to non-destructively add a fade to the end of a region. Then use the Automation Curve tool to add a curve shape to the fade out.
There are many ways to do this

  • Editing the waveform graph

    Hi,
I have encountered some problem is finding waveform graph. I downloaded the tutorial for ASK modulation i tried to do a new one as practice. But the graph are very different. it seems that the borders are transparent which can only see the graph portion only. I have tried to use waveform graph from the graph palettes. I edited it by stretching the graph (waveform result) area and unchecked the visible plot legend, scales and etc.. but i just can't do it the same as the example and the waveform at the bottom is slightly different also (but i don't know isit different scales). I have no choice but copy the graph and paste on mine. Anyone know the trick or tips in doing it? Thanks..

    Hi Serina,
have you tried to use the waveform graph/chart from the "Classic" palette?
Those controls/indicators have a "flat" look making a lot easier to hide unneeded features

  • How can I edit the audio in a QT file without having to transcode it first?

I have some 320x256 QT files that feature some background noises that I want to edit out and dub over with some new audio. Is there an app that will let me do this while retaining the files at their native resolution?
The only method I've found so far is to import them into iMovie, which transcodes them to 720x576 DV files from which I can extract the audio, edit and re-export at 320x256, but I'd really like to avoid the transcoding step.

QuickTime Pro can "extract" the sound track. This will create a copy you can then "export" to a suitable sound editing format (.aiff).
Edit the .aiff file using your sound editing software and then open the file with QT Pro and export to the original format used in the source movie. Add it "scaled" back into your original source movie and "delete" the older sound track. Use "Save As" and your file will complete.

  • When I record an audio track, there is a waveform. When I stop recording, the waveform disappears and becomes a straight line. It also disappears from the track edit window. But the sound is there. How can I stop the waveform from disappearing?

When I record an audio track using Logic Pro X, there is a visible waveform which appears as I record. When I stop recording, the waveform disappears and becomes a straight line. It also disappears from the track edit window. But the sound is still there. How can I stop the waveform from disappearing? And can I do something to view it after it has disappeared? Anyone know the anser?

    In Logic:
    Preferences/Audio Set Recording Delay to 0 <zero>
This should always be set to zero unless a specific set of circumstances exist and you're audio drivers do not report position correctly.
On occasion, usually when importing a Logic 9 project, Logic-X randomly changes this to a negative/positive number.  It's actually a bug in Logic, as it should always display the waveform.

  • Why does the waveform disappear after editing in Sound Booth?

It happens consistently with CS4 on 2 different computers. I right-click the audio track and select Edit in Adobe Sound Booth, and SB opens the audio for editing. I edit the audio, and it updates the audio. I know it does, because when I play back the edited section, it's correct. But the waveform is gone! I tried playing around with the display style -- disable and enable waveform, keyframes, etc. -- but the audio track doesn't display anything. I have to exit out of Premiere and re-start it to see the waveform again.
    Anyone else experience this?
Also: when editing the audio in SB, is there a way to substitute the PP audio track with a multi-track? I know I can export a multitrack as an .aiff and import it into PP, but I was wondering if there's a way to link it.

Thanks for responding, but the thread you mentioned seems to be about a mirror-image problem: waveform not appearing in Sound Booth. In my case, SB is working fine and displaying the waveform properly, which is why I posted my question in this forum, instead.
The problem I'm having is the waveform not appearing in PPro. This doesn't seem to be a case of "it isn't a bug, it's a feature", because exiting and restarting PPro makes the waveform reappear. So it looks like it is a bug. Unless I'm doing something wrong or have a conflict somwhere.
BTW, I used to use Audition, but it had too many hardware issues and wouldn't run under 64-bit Windows. Have you tried it under Vista x64, or with dynamic links to PPro or After Effects? It seems that PPro, AE and Flash have been designed to work with SB rather than Audition.

  • Editable Volume Line in The waveform

I am totally new to Sound Booth and I can't find the answer to this in any tutorials or manuals:  How do you implement the volume or levels as an editable line within the waveform.  A line where you can add key points and move them up and down and even make them Bezier curves so that volume levels changes can be edited in a non linear fashion if desired?
Secons: I imported a score form the included library and when dragged to the editing window, there in no wave form.  How do I make it apear with the waveform?
Any help and input is appreciated

Make sure the volume on the iPod is turned up fully, since this will affect what you hear through the stereo.
Make sure Volume Limit is set to full. (From Main Menu, Settings/Volume Limit)
If you purchased your iPod inside the EU (European Union), then the maximum volume from the headphone jack is lower than elsewhere in the world. If this is the case, buy yourself a 30-pin Dock Connector to 3.5mm jack lead, such as the one linked here...
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Decrescent-Connector-Stereo-Auxiliary-iPhone/dp/B007NIE5 EE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1386012456&sr=8-1&keywords=30+pin+to+3.5mm
That connector will take a higher volume out (than the European Union's output) and that will be louder (and hopefully loud enough) through your stereo.

  • Hi,  I trimmed an audio regin in the audio track edior with "Snap Edits to Zero Crossings" on. But I zoom in.the waveform was not ended at Zero point. Why?  In the audio file editork, "Snap Edits to Zero Crossings" option works fine.

    Hi,
I trimmed an audio regin in the audio track edior with "Snap Edits to Zero Crossings" on.
But I zoom in、the waveform was not ended at Zero point.
    Why?
In the audio file editork, "Snap Edits to Zero Crossings" option works fine.

correction needs to be made to step #14, I typed:
    14) Point to the start or end one of the clips, when you see the icon showing arrows going either way, right click and drag your clips to roughly match up with the timeline selection, then zoom in further and adjust the clip start and end points to match up exactly with the timeline selection start and endpoints.
Here is the correction, THE CORRECTED PARTS ARE CAPITALIZED:
    14) Point to the start or end OF one of the clips, when you see the icon showing arrows going either way, LEFT-CLICK and drag your clips to roughly match up with the timeline selection, then zoom in further and adjust the clip start and end points to match up exactly with the timeline selection's start and end points.
    Another Correction:

  • Acquire sound data time does not match with the waveform graph

i am doing a basic data logging system to see the frequency behavior of sound. What I did is to use the "acquire sound" system of Labview and connect a waveform graph to see the time-domain behavior of sound.
However, if I input a duration of 4 seconds (or any time), I will only see 75% of the sound (that is 3 seconds). I tried to extract the values using write to file to see if the waveform graph is the one who have the delay. however, the data also showed me 3seconds.
I will attach here the picture of the simple program i created.
I hope someone can explain to me why this happen.
I am using the soundcard and microphone of a laptop. I also tried using a computer microphone. I have tried this program to all computers I can use (2 laptops: SAMSUNG, ASUS, and one desktop computer core i5)

    Hi all,
have you find a fix for this issue? Im facing the same situation, using Complex type, and String data type both in the service and Bi publisher. We are consuming CC&B services, and we have noticed this error appears when BIPublisher is running on WebLogic (10.3) but it does not appear when BIPublisher is running on OC4J , of course running the same report on both application servers.
    Any idea?
    Thanks a lot, regards

  • Using the iPad 3 as a midi sound source

    Hello,
I just recently purchased an iPad 3. I need a program that will let me assign individual midi channels to individual .wav files that I recorded on my computer.  I need to have 3 octaves assigned to an external midi keyboard.  Essentially a Kontakt player lite, or Reason lite would be great.  So far I have only found programs that will allow me to do this with about 16 channels.  I do not need to edit the files, or create a sequence.  Does anyone know of a program that can do this.
    Thank you,
    TFoN

    Hi John,
Not sure if it will do iphone to iPad, but there's an app called Air Display that turns your iphone or ipad or mac as a second display:
    http://www.avatron.com/apps/air-display/
Perhaps if you have both (iphone and ipad) connected to your computer via Air Display???

  • Capturing the output of a javax.sound.midi.Synthesizer

    Hallo,
since i cant convert a MIDI-Sequence to a WAV-File directly, i want to play back the Sequence and capture the sound somewhere "between" the sound-generating synthesizer and the speakers. As far as i understand, i have to obtain a TargetDataLine from an output mixer, so i can read the sound data, since ports arent implemented yet. My problem is: How can i obtain such a TargetDataLine?
    With something like
    info = new DataLine.Info(TargetDataLine.class, format);
    line = (TargetDataLine)AudioSystem.getLine(info);
i get a line to capture microphone input.
i managed to get a mixer that is opened and started, when the synthesizer is opened, but that mixer only provides com.sun.media.sound.MixerSourceLines.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Not a reply, I'm afraid.
I want to combine Midi output with audio output, which is exactly the same question as this thread. The whole thrust of Java sound is to 'unify' Midi and Audio, and yet I've fallen at the first hurdle.
This thread was opened in Nov last year, yet is still unanswered. Is this right?

  • I want to use a portion of an iTune song but the section begins 5:48 into the song. How do I edit the sound selection?

Adding iTune selections appear to be defaulted to start at the beginning of the song, and you just trim the end off. But I want to start my selection within the song. How do I edit the song to appear on the video so that I can use a portion of the song 5 minutes and 48 seconds into the song?

Here is a reply I provided last week.  Hope this helps. Noreen
Drag the song in to start of show.  There is an icon that looks like a gear at the beginning of the green song strip.  Click on this to see clip trimmer.  The song will open in the screen on the bottom half of the iMovie screen.  You drag the yellow start line to the place where you want the song to start.  As my children have shown me, watch for the spikes to see the exact place, but listening along works also.  You can trim a song from the beginning and the end so that you only use 30 seconds in the middle, if that is what you want.
I would also suggest using audio control to fade the song in, especially if you are starting at a loud point.  The default fade in is half a second.  I change that to 1.2 to 1.5, depending on the song.  Also, if one song is louder than the next, you can equalize the volume by setting sound at 120% or whatever you think sounds correct for a specific song.
When trimming for a song at the end of a slideshow, you may need to drag the black (or any color) screen in to end and set duration for a few minutes so that you will be able to trim the song.  Otherwise, the program will only drag in as much of the song as you have video remaining.  I know that sounds confusing but once you try it, you will see what I mean.  Once you have trimmed the song the way you want it, delete the black screen and fade song to end.

  • I have never used my mac for desktop publishing before and am having some problems.  This sounds really dumb, but I can't figure out how to put a border around a text box.  Also, how do you edit the border, i.e. border color, thickness, etc. Help!

I have never used my mac for desktop publishing before and am running into some real problems.  How do you put a border around a text box?  Can you edit the border - color, thickness, etc.?  Help!

I think the best solution is to read Pages documentation, go to Help and you have a long list of options. Pages is capable of quite sophisticated things, some features are above Nisus or Mellel, so it is not so simple to summarize things in a few lines.

  • How to edit vocal waveforms to overcome sibilance and plosives

I know there are some tricks to dealing with sibilance and plosives (there's a great article on this on EQ's website <http://www.eqmag.com/article/vocal-cords-removing/jan-08/33059>, but one thing I can't quite figure out is how to edit a waveform through GB. So far, I've not been able to do much other than slightly trim a bit of the beginning of the waveform, but I invariably cut too much off at the top of the "esses" so that it sounds like a "ts", which is not what I am going for at all.
Any technical help on how to edit waveforms through GB? Or is this an impossible dream? I have both a Blue Snowball USB mic and an Audio-Technica M4000S, and my mic budget is already tapped out after getting a Line 6 USB interface (TonePort GX) and the mic adapters I needed to plug my mic into the interface. I also have a pop filter, which could help but I can't quite get the vocal presence I need if I sing from four inches away so it's basically no good regardless of which mic I use.

The editing of the waveform is a good way to fix sibilance at times, but it's really hard to do in GB because the way the wave is rendered in the track. You can zoom in really close and try to do it using the volume automation, but the way the waveform is rendered in the editing window is much better, you can zoom in and find the point where the plosive is happening, but the problem is that you can't set the volume points in the editing window, you can only do that in the track. What you might want to try is editing the vocal track that needs fixing, by itself in an audio editor like Audacity(you can get it for free here: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/about/features )using the volume envelope in the sections where the plosives occur. Then drag that file back into your Garageband project. It's similar to riding the fader on a mix, a technique for adjusting the vocal to minimize popping in a recording. Of course it's always better to avoid them in the first place, and I usually position my pop filter as close as possible to the mic, maybe 1/2" away, and sing right up close to the pop filter, when I want a close-up vocal. But if you use an external editor with Garageband, you can fix tracks that have some popping you need to get out.

I long time ago bought the good old awe32 ISA card. In my opinion this card had the best midi sound there ever was.... but back to the point. In lack of a ISA slot in my PC i now use a soundblaster audigy LS.But someone told me i can somewhere in the galaxy download a so called Sound Bank or Sound Font so my midi files and old dos games (Dosbox) could sound just like the old awe 32 Soundblaster card. But i could nowhere find such files. And even if i would find something i don?t know how to use them. I hope someone can help me.
