Editing tnsnames.ora

Hey,
I am new to this can anyone help me configure tnsnames.ora file for connecting it with Toad.
I have Oracle 10g. I have never done this before.

Hm doesn't look to me as if you realy want to learn anything:
Re: Connect Oracle with TOAD
Installing Oracle Client for Connecting TOAD
But ok...
the tnsnames.ora is in $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
The syntax is like that:
ALIAS =
  (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = IPADRESS)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
      (SERVER = DEDICATED)
      (SERVICE_NAME = SID)
)You have to change the italic values.

    Hi all,
Customer has set local_listener = '(ADDRESS = (PROTO =TCP)(HOST=themis)(PORT=1532))' . Then he used DBUA to upgrade from 10.2.0.3 to 10.2.0.4. Post upgrade, he noticed that DBUA has edited the tnsnames.ora file. Customer would like to know why DBUA should edit tnsnames.ora, as he has already set local_listener. Are there any advantages in this method?
    Any ideas would be helpful.
    Thanks,

  • EM doesn't allow creation of tnsnames.ora entry with service name orcl11gr2

    Dear all,
I'm trying to create a net service name with EM Database Control, via Net Services Administration link. On the service name field, under the 'Edit Net Service Name' screen, I key in orcl11gr2, and it throws the the following error:
    Validation Error
Examine and correct the following errors, then retry the operation:
Service Name - Specify a valid service name.
I wonder what is the extra validation that EM is checking. I assume it's checking the number of characters to be 8 characters or less.
Also, because of this extra validation that is in EM, all tnsnames.ora entry that have service name = orcl11gr2, I will not be able to use EM to modify them, as I will get the same above error.
But why does Oracle implements this extra validation, when the same validation is not implemented on other Oracle tools? For instance:
    1. dbca allows me to create a database with instance_name greater than 8 characters, and the outcome of initialization parameters will be as follow:
    db_name=orcl11gr -- truncated to 8 characters
    instance_name=orcl11gr2
    db_unique_name=orcl11gr2
    service_names=orcl11gr2
    2. Oracle Net Manager supports service name of orcl11gr2. The created Net Service Name, I have no problem connecting to the database.
    3. Listener support orcl11gr2 service name
    I'm using Oracle 11g R2 (11.2.0.1.0) for Microsoft Windows (x64), running on Windows 7.

  • How to deactivate an entry in tnsnames.ora file

    Hi all,
I am working with Oracle 10g enterprise edition. I have a data source named with DEVDATA which should not be affected while I am working on my project. Usually, I will add DEVDATA entry in tnsname.ora file if I want to use it and I will remove that entry from tnsnames.ora file in order to protect that data source. It is very laborious process each time when I want to add or remove that entry. Do we have any mean such a way that I can switch between the two options. Currently, I have a desktop shortcut to tnsnames.ora file so that I can add or remove that entry when ever I want. Can we comment out that entry. Please suggest me.
I hope this is the right place to fire this question. If not, direct me. Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Kumar.

    Regards,
Kumar. As others have said, either comment out each line of the entry, or have two tnsnames files that you rename as needed. But really, how often do you make the swap that commenting/uncommenting about five lines of code is such a burden?

  • Oracle 8i clients, inconsistent handling of tnsnames.ora (ORA-06401 gotcha)

This is more of a bug report / oddity declaration than a real problem, though it was a pain in the butt to nail down. I post it here for the benefit of anyone else who may run into it down the road.
Using the linux sqlplus client, I kept getting consistent failures connecting to one of a dozen db's, but tests with the (java) netasst client worked fine. After various debugging of other potential causes, it came down to strace'ing the sqlplus client, and noting that it was attempting to connect to the wrong host, despite what was specified on the command line.
What we identified as the most probable cause:
The routines that load and parse the tnsnames.ora file differ between the linux and java clients, with the java client being more tolerant/robust. The tnsnames.ora file I'd been supplied with had come from a fellow user's Win32 machine, and had been edited there, which probably included a couple ^M's or other non-visible characters within the file.
The solution (at least, what I did):
Load the tnsnames.ora file with netasst, and save it again with netasst. Netasst wrote the file in a manner that sqlplus could read accurately, and I got to go have a beer.

    Hi Fredrik,
You r right. But I have its entry in tnsnames.ora file. The entry looks like this -
    My_Service_Name.world =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS =
    (COMMUNITY = tcp.world)
    (PROTOCOL = TCP)
    (Server = Computer_Name_of_Server_having_Ora8i)
    (Host = IP_Add_of_Server_having_Ora8i)
    (Port = 1521)
    (Pipe = ORAPIPE)
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = ORCL)
The same entry exists in the tnsnames.ora file on the local PCs (same office where the Oracle 8i Server is present) at Site 1 and these PCs connect the server without any problem.
    Thanks

  • SQL Dev 3.0.04 cannot locate TNSNAMES.ora file after Oracle11g XE Beta

    Hello,
I had Oracle Developer Suite (Reports, Forms) installed on Windows 7 32 bit along with SQL Developer 3.0.04 (latest prod. build) and everything was working just fine.
Then, I installed Oracle 11g XE Beta database and now, all the existing Connections in SQL Developer give an error "Invalid connection information specified. Verify the URL format for the specified driver."
I thought since 11gXE was the latest Oracle software installed, the Path environment variable in Windows will have the Oracle 11gXE as the leading path string. So, I cut this leading string : C:\Oracle\Oracle11gXE\product\11.1.0\db_1\bin and appended it at the very end.
This means that the Path that existed prior to the 11gXE install is now the leading and hence SQL Developer should be reading the TNSNAMES.ora file from the very first Oracle Home encountered which is for the developer suite. But this does not seem to work.
Any ideas how to fix this? How does SQL Developer determine which tnsnames file to use?
    Thanks,
    Manish

    Hi Manish,
One place to control this is Tools|Preferences|Database|Advanced|Tnsnames Directory.
Otherwise read the documentation in Help|Table of Contents|SQL Developer Concepts and Usage|Database Connections. The third paragraph contains a description of the various alternatives.

  • Which TNSNAMES.ORA file to update???

    Hi All
I have installed Oracle Apps on my local system and I regularly access one more database using internet which is on another server. Now for accessing my local apps database I can use Toad or PL/SQL Developer without modifying the TNS file.
But if I want to access the remote database I need to edit the TNS file. But I am not sure about which TNS file to edit as there are many TNS files on my system. viz. in Prodora, Prodappl, Proddb etc.
Which TNS file I need to update so that I can access the remote database?
    Regards
    Rahman

    A few things:
    Your three ORACLE_HOMEs:
Prodora -- This is the one that the applications CLIENT uses (i.e. the concurrent managers, forms, etc.. and actually contains two ORACLE_HOMEs (the 8.0.6 one and the iAS one)
Prodappl -- Is the APPL_TOP and shouldn't have a TNSNAMES under it anyway.
Proddb -- This is the one used by the database. Update the TNSNAMES entries under this ORACLE_HOME if you need access to another system via a database link.
Additionally, you shouldn't be editing the TNSNAMES.ora or LISTENER.ora files directly in an autoconfig-managed applications environment. The PROPER thing to do is to edit the INCLUDE FILE.
If you look at the bottom of your autoconfig managed tnsnames.ora or listener.ora files, you will see an "IFILE=" entry that points to a (either zero-byte or non-existent) file. Put your customizations in there. This way you can be ensured that they won't be clobbered by AutoConfig. Additionally, when you copy things around for cloning, just rename the file on your target.

ping qdb.lipt.comit seems mentioned hostname is unreachable.
    ORA-12545:
Connect failed because target host or object does not exist
Cause:      The address specified is not valid, or the program being connected to does not exist.
Action:      Ensure the ADDRESS parameters have been entered correctly; the most likely incorrect parameter is the node name. Ensure that the executable for the server exists (perhaps "oracle" is missing.) If the protocol is TCP/IP, edit the TNSNAMES.ORA file to change the host name to a numeric IP address and try again.

  • How to add an entry to TNSNAMES.ORA?

    Hello,
if I add the following entry to the TNSNAMES.ORA:
    test1_10.121.34.56 =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 10.121.34.56)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = test1)
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
how could I activate it please without rebooting?
    I'm using Oracle 9i Release 9.2.0.8.0 at CentOS 4.7
Linux machine (which is compatible to RHEL 4.7).
    Thank you
    Alex

Hello all, thank you for your support.
Could we please start from the beginning?
(and I'll use the real IP addresses this time, sorry)

  • How to list the datasources without use a tnsnames.ora file?

    Hi,
I want to use the OracleDataSourceEnumerator class of ODP.Net to list the datasources on which the user can connect.
It's work with a tnsnames.ora on the local station, so good.
But I want use the easy connect naming methode so i have edited the sqlnet.ora file with this:
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (EZCONNECT, TNSNAMES)
then i have deleted the content of the tnsnames.ora
so my code don't work : none datasource is returned by the OracleDataSourceEnumerator
So my question : is it a way to list the datasources without use a tnsnames.ora file?

    You can check
    DataConnectionFile.EnumerateDependants method
This post is my own opinion and does not necessarily reflect the opinion or view of Slalom.

  • Tnsnames.ora General Question

We are experiencing a problem that many different users seem to have many different versions of tnsnames.ora. We want to create our "gold" version and ensure that everyone uses the same one. Two questions:
    1. Is the "alias" that you give each connection case sensitive? For instance if I name one connection Prod is that the same as PROD?
    2. At another place I worked I was under the impression that most applications (PL/SQL Developer for sure) uses the Windows PATH environment variable to locate tnsnames.ora by going through all directories listed in the variable and using the first occurrence of tnsnames.ora that it found. Through a little testing and renaming and such I have found that this doesn't appear to be the case. We are using ADI, Discoverer, different development tools, etc and would like to avoid having more than one location where the file is stored. What is the best way around that or is there a way? I assume that it depends somewhat on each application.
Thanks in advance for the help!

PL/SQL Developer Help->Support Info TNS Names tab shows that C:\oracle\ora92\network\admin\tnsnames.ora is used as my tnsnames.ora for the application. I don't have an ORA_HOME environment variable. So where is it coming from? The path above is in my PATH variable.
So it is different for every application?
    I don't have TNS_ADMIN environment variable either.
Sorry for the dumb questions. I just want to be 100% clear.
