Eliminate or hide table of contents

I have my first iBook just about ready to submit to the iBooks store, but I have a huge, vexing, problem to be solved that should not be a problem at all but because of the way iBooks is designed, it is. Namely, the Table of Contents.
I want to eliminate it entirely and make my own TOC in a more traditional way, by listing my chapters up and down on a single or perhaps two pages, each linked to the respective chapter.
But I cannot find anyway to do this.
Worse yet, I am unable to eliminate the elements in the default TOC. I can select some of those elements but they will not delete. The delete button does nothing and the +- bar in the TOC section of the document inspector cannot be selected or clicked on. It is dead.
But even if the delete button worked and so did the +- bar but I am forced to keep the default TOC in any form, I would not be happy. I want to get rid of it, altogether. I do not want my readers to see it. I just want it gone.
What can I do?
Thank you.

  • How to eliminate "back to table of contents" option in iBooks Author?

    I am making a book in iBooks Author, and do not want the option of going back to the table of contents to be available on each page. Is there any way to stop this from showing up?

    If you don't get an answer here, you might post the question in the iBooks Author discussion here.

  • Does anyone know if its possible to hide the numbers that appears on the Table of content?

    In iBooks Author, I would like to know if its possible to hide the numbers that appears on the Table of contents, does anyone know?. Also I would like to change the yellow color that appers on the mini pics on the image gallery widgets, does anyone know if this is possible?
    Thanks in advance

    I don't believe doing either is possible.

  • ID CS5: How to include additional text into a table of contents and how to hide text from it?

    I have the following problem:
    1. I'd like to include additional Information in my table of contents which I don't want to appear in the text I refer to.
    Example: I do have a picture with a caption saying:
    picture 1: Blablabla.
    And I want to have the source of the picture as additional information in the table of contents:
    picture 1........Blablabla (source: thisandthat)........23
    Still I don't want this additional content to disappear, as soon as I update the table of contents!
    How can I achieve that?
    2. And how can I have this the other way round?
    Let's say I want the source in the caption, but not in the table of contents.
    So the caption says:
    picture1: Blablabla (source: thisandthat)
    but the table of content says:
    picture 1........Blablabla.....................23
    I was trying to achieve this by two different praograph styles in the caption. One which would be listed, and one which wouldn't be listed, but this of course resulted in always having two paragraphs in the caption, which I'd like to avoid:
    picture1: Blablabla
    (source: thisandthat)
    Any solution to this?
    Best Regards,
    Rainer Schwachsinn

    Sorry, missed the second part of the question. I think the only way to do that is to use invisible "dummy" text of some sort, and if you're going to do it for some entries, you might as will do it for all.
    One of the easiest ways is to put the text you want inthe TOC into an anchored frame attached to the actual heading in the text (so it moves along with it). Use a unique paragraph style for this text, and include this style, not the one applied to the headings inthe text, to make the TOC. I usually use a character color of red to make it satnd oout so I don't forget it's there, and the position on the page isn't really critical. Select the anchored frame, open the Attributes panel and make it non-printing. You'll see it in editing mode, the TOC will pick it up (as will variables, if required) but it will disappear on output.

  • "Table of Contents" web part - How to have expand/collapse buttons? (I can use only CSS/JavaScript/JQuery)

    Hi there,
    I have a Table of Contents web part which is great. Is there a way so it shows only top level sites and then one can expand or collapse any top level site to see/hide the subsites?
    As of now it shows
    HR Parent site
    - HR sub site 1
    - HR sub site 2
    IT Parent site
    - IT sub site 1
    - IT sub site 2
    What I want is
    + HR Parent site
    + IT Parent site
    So one can expand or collapse on demand.
    Any relevant JS/CSS/JQuery code?
    Thank you so much.

    Hi,
    According to your post, my understanding is that you want to expand or collapse the level site for the table of contents web part.
    I have made a simple code demo below to achieve this scenario, you can refer to it.
    <script src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.10.2.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript">
    $(function(){
    var iconCollapse = "/_layouts/images/collapse.gif";
    var iconExpand = "/_layouts/images/expand.gif";
    $("div[id='WebPartWPQ2'] li ul").hide();
    //ugly way
    var $t = $("#WebPartWPQ2 div").children("ul").children("li").children("div");
    $t.each(function(){
    //console.log($(this).html());
    $(this).attr("style", "float: right; margin-right: 297px; line-height: 8px;");
    $(this).css("display","inline");
    $("<a src=" + iconExpand + "></img>").insertBefore($(this));
    $("a[class='min']").click(function()
    var img = $(this).children();
    //Traverse the DOM to find the child UL node
    var subList = $(this).siblings().children('ul');
    //Check the visibility of the item and set the image
    var Visibility = subList.is(":visible")?img.attr('src',iconExpand):img.attr('src',iconCollapse);
    //Toggle the UL
    subList.slideToggle();
    </script>
    Note: Yous should change the Web part ID and the css style to fit your environment.
    Thanks & Regards,

  • Table of Contents Broken Links

    I am using Framemaker 7.1 and have created a Table of Contents for a book. When I open the PDF created for this book the links in the TOC go to the corresponding pages for the first few chapters but nothing after those works. In Framemaker when I use ALT+CTRL to try to test the link I get an error saying that it cannot find the files for the links that do not work. Does anyone know what causes this error? The files are in the folder and at the location it is looking for them. This has me stumped.

    blitza4life,
    You didn't mention whether any conditional text may exist in the document. However, I have seen this happen when conditional text was used in a book and pages got edited with the conditional text hidden. If this is the culprit, the cause would be a bit of text or end-of-paragraph marker adjacent to a heading that has a condition tag applied that is set to hide at when the book is generated. If you want to rule this out, here's how:
    Open all files in the book.
    Set all conditions to show with indicators.
    Update the book.
    Save all files.
    Save all files as MIF. (yes, in addition to...)
    Close the book and all its files.
    Open the book.mif file, save as .book;  and then open all the MIF files associated, then save those back to FM.
    Check the TOC links to see if they work. If they do, when you land on the linked text you'll be able to see and either remove the condition tags or delete the tagged text. Then, update the book again and the TOC should be accurate.
    Another potential root cause of this problem could be text insets, but that's more complicated and less frequently the issue. Please update this string when you find a solution.
    Thanks

  • Hiding subsites in Table of Contents Web Part - SharePoint 2010

    I've gone through the normal steps of having the table of contents web part not show a subsite (uncheck the box that says "Show Hidden Sites" as well as hide the site in the global navigation) but for whatever reason, the site I've hidden still
    appears in the table of contents. Is there any way to remove it without deleting the subsite entirely?
    Thoughts?

    Actually, a version of Nate's solution did work for me, it just needs more details.....
    Where you need to check off "Show Subsites" is in the "Current Navigation" section of SiteSettings/Navigation, and then hide the sites from THERE in Navigation Editing and Sorting  (I had already tried it on the Global Navigation side
    and the subsites still appeared in the Table of Contents).
    For our particular needs, we did NOT want those sites on this root site navigation sidebar as well, so after setting the specific subsites to "Hidden" and saving changes, I went back to SiteSettings/TreeView and unchecked "Enable Quick Launch".
     All appears on the Root Site TOC as desired.
    So, Nate was right about the whole counter-intuitive thing, but no need for custom css or de-activating/activating the publishing  features

  • Apple Mail not opening, says opening Table of contents, but I get nothing..

    I often have problems getting my Apple Mail to open. It just says "Reading table of contents" and doesn't open. Sometimes after numerous Forced Quits it opens. When doing a Forced Quit, it sometimes says "Not Responding".
    Is there anything that I can do to get Apple Mail to work? Or, is there anything else out there that works better that Apple Mail that I can download off the net?
    I am running OS 10.3.9

    Still not sure what you mean. Anyway, if there are no filesystem issues, the procedure to fix the problem for the Inbox of a POP account would be as follows. I cannot be more specific with the information you’ve provided (actually, I don’t even know whether the affected mailbox is one of the Inboxes or it’s something else):
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/.
    3. Locate INBOX.mbox and move it to the Desktop.
    4. Open Mail. A new empty INBOX.mbox will automatically be created within the account folder, and this will allow you to continue using Mail normally while trying to solve the problem.
    Although INBOX.mbox appears to be a file, it’s actually a special kind of folder (a package) that contains several files. Ctrl-click on INBOX.mbox and choose Show Package Contents from the contextual menu to see the files it contains. Of these files, mbox is the most important and is where all your messages are stored. What’s the size of that file? Depending on its size, you may or may not be able to directly import it back into Mail in the next step.
    An Incoming_Mail file may also be present, in which case it might contain messages that Mail couldn’t transfer to mbox. Incoming_Mail is also a standard mbox file like mbox proper, just named differently, and can be imported back into Mail in the same way.
    5. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes and follow the instructions to import the INBOX.mbox that’s on the Desktop. I’m not sure what the import options available in Mail 1.x are, but you should choose Other / Standard mbox or something like that, so that Mail looks at the mbox file only (and Incoming_Mail, if present) and ignores the other files in the package.
    If Mail doesn’t let you select INBOX.mbox in step 5 because it’s a package instead of a plain folder, rename INBOX.mbox to just INBOX (i.e. remove the .mbox suffix) so that it becomes a normal folder, and try again. You cannot do this directly in the Finder because removing a suffix by normal means causes the Finder to hide the suffix instead of renaming the file. To remove the suffix from the name, you must do File > Get Info (⌘I) on the file and change the name there.
    Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move the messages anywhere you want and get rid of the imported mailboxes afterwards, but take a look at the following article, in case there is something there that applies to you:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
    If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
    Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • How can I edit the table of contents?

    I'm unable to do anything to the table of content. I don't want numbers, 1.2 for Chapter 1, Section 2
    Is there a way to cjange this or do I just eliminate chapters and sections.

    If you choose none and your book isn't complying, you have other issues, such as maybe a corrupted book, or maybe a template that is locked for that attribute.
    Try making another, fresh book and then see if it obeys page numbering as you need there.

  • Mail spinning, won't delete, "reading table of contents", etc. help?

    First off, forgive my un-tech-ness.
    I recently went away and before I left I
    set my Mail Prefs to disable "remove
    copy from server" since I would be using
    a different computer and didn't want to
    risk losing any mail. Was able to retrieve my
    mail remotely with no problem. However, when I
    returned home, even though I immediately changed
    the preferences back to remove the copies from the
    server right away, each message left on the server was loaded into my inbox three or four times. Then the fun started - spinning ball, messages like "reading table of contents","copying 48 out of 50" "opening mailbox". I moved the duplicates to the trash and even deleted them from trash,but then I had to force quit so when I opened Mail the
    next time, same problems with hanging up and duplicate
    messages all still there. Oddly (maybe not, I don't know
    enough to know what's odd-) I can receive and send mail with no problem. I have to force quit every time. I tried moving MessageRules.plist to Desktop as suggested in another post, but no luck.
    Thanks for any help anyone out there can offer.

    Not sure, but the mailbox appears to have become corrupt (maybe “overstuffed”, see below).
    Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
    The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
    After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and ensuring that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a copy of Inbox), try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/.
    3. Locate INBOX.mbox and move it to the Desktop.

  • Acrobat Pro 9.0 freezes when viewing/scrolling through the table of contents of a document

    I am hoping someone can help me or has experienced the same problem I'm about to describe. I belong to the technical publications group of a fairly large company and I review a lot of PDF documents. I just installed Acrobat 9.0.0 (via CS4 Design Standard) and I've noticed on larger documents where there's a full page or several pages worth of Table of Contents, Acrobat 9.0.0 seems to freeze up when I begin scrolling through the TOC. For example, if I want to use the Text Edit tools or use a sticky note, when I press on an icon, Acrobat will freeze for a good 10 seconds, then will allow you to press the icon. It tends to freeze each time I want to make my next edit or even pressing the up/down arrow buttons to go to the next page. Once I get through the TOC pages, Acrobat seems to function normally--no freezes.
    Has anyone experienced this? Would appreciate any kind of advice on how to fix--perhaps there's a patch or update?
    I didn't experience any of this using Acrobat 8.0--I never had any real problems with Acrobat until 9.0.0.

    Your issue may not be related to a difference between v8 and 9.
    I have not had this problem on my computers, but a coworker had this issue. For many documents that others were able to open and scroll through without issue, his computer was freezing and unfreezing.  IT determined his graphics capabilities were not able to keep up with the requirements of working with larger documents and gave his computer a RAM upgrade and a new graphics card. Particularly during scrolling, higher demands are made on the computer to graphically render and re-render page content. Documents giving him problems before became a non-issue.
    A new graphics card is obviously a $$$ solution, but you might want to check to see if your RAM meets the minimum requirements and check to see if there are any program updates (Help > Check for Updates).
    I have had an issue of pdfs freezing, but not specifically in the table of contents areas. If your document has pages with images that have an unusually high number of layers, it may affect the ability to work effectively in the document.

  • Acrobat XI PRO: Create a Table of Contents (TOC) automatically in top, after I have combined several pdf.files into a single pdf.file

    Hey
    I have now tried for hours, but now I give up!
    MY WISH -
    Create a Table of Contents (TOC) automatically after I have combined several pdf.files into a single pdf.file.
    I have already bookmarks, shown on the screen (see screenshot below) but I want those bookmark to be visualised in a separate TOC in the top of the combined files.
    This new TOC (which I have inserted) shall be printable and serve as a cover page in a binder.
    I have seen other cheap pdf.programs in the market (e.g. PDF Converter Professional 7.3) which are able to make the above things, easy, fast and nice.

  • Table of Contents vanishes when trying to update or regenerate in CS6

    I'm working with InDesign CS6 on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
    This is an old, legacy document. Today, I needed to remove two pages, so of course, I need to update my table of contents and index. I had no problems with the index - it regenerated just fine. The TOC is another matter. I clicked Layout > Update Table of Contents. I got the message stating that the contents was updated. However, what actually happened was the TOC text vanished! And, it actually is gone because I can see two empty paragraph markers where the TOC used to be. I've tried regenerating it instead of doing the update. Same result - it's gone.
    I'm still fairly new to InDesign, so I'm not sure what I can do to troubleshoot this. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Sounds like ID doesn't think there are any paragraphs with the style names you've selected for inclusion.
    But I'm not a fan of direct conversion of legacy files because these sorts of things, or worse, happen a lot. Try this: Remove minor corruption by exporting

  • Problem with Sections and Table of Contents

    I have just purchased pages. Both my iMac and MacBook have Lion. I do not have the "sections" button on the toolbar. When I open the "inspector" and try to insert a Table of Contents, the "paragraph styles" pane is empty. How can I correct these problems as I would like to use pages for a family story

    You have started your document with a Page Layout template. TOC doesn't work with text boxes. You need to use a Word Processing document and have the text in the main text layer.
    In the New from Template Chooser you can see the types in the left side bar.
