Emac issues....maybe minor

ive got a Cd drive that doesnt respond. Ive tried the manual (paper-clip) eject and didn't work. And my Western Digital Pro-Book 250 is not booting. Ive tried everything and my mac real sluggish especialy ITunes. This might be a lot to injest. Im not positive on the External, and havent tried it on another mac (its a firewire 400). But will do that,
there might be one small problem, all my music and video was on the external because of lack of internal space, I only have 9.5g of 34g left
Any Help!

9+ GB free on the internal HD is plenty of space, especially without the need for the scratch file space used by a CD-RW/DVD-RW burner. When you note that your external HD is not booting, do you mean you can start the computer from that exteranl Firewire drive using Startup Manager, or does the external HD fail to show on the Desktop when booted from the internal HD? The past-tense reference to your music and video being on the external drive leads me to suspect the latter. If iTunes appeared sluggish with the music files on the external drive, it's possible the external drive was full or failing. Does the external drive appear in Disk Utiltiy? If yes, what does Disk Utility show for he drive's SMART status? For the amount of free space? If Disk Utility can see the external drive, try running Repair Disk on it. Note any errors reported and post back the results.
If the external drive doesn't show up on the Desktop or in Disk Utility, check System profiler and make see if that picks up the external drive. Also check that the Firewire bus itself is showing up in System Profiler. If the bus doesn't show up, reset the eMac's Firewire bus triple fuses by removing all peripherals other than the keyboard and mouse, then removing the power cord from the side of the eMac (to remove the trickle current drawn by modern electronics even when nominally off) and waiting 15+ minutes. Then reattach the power cord only and boot the Mac. Check System Profiler and confirm that the Firewire bus is recognized, then reattach peripherals one at a time, checking System Profiler after each to confirm the addition is recognized.
If thee Firewire bus is recognized in System Profiler but the external HD doesn't register, check the Firewire connectors are firmly seated on both ends of the cable. If you have a spare unused Firewire device cable, try swapping that for the cable currently in use.
Re the CD drawer not opening, when you try to eject, are you picking up any noises indicating that the drive is trying? Does the optical drawer open if you restart while holding down the mouse button? If you double-click on /System/ Library/ CoreServices/ Menu Extras/ Eject.menu to put an eject icon in the menubar and click on that with your mouse? (If that last tip works, the eject button on your keyboard may be jammed; you can pry it straight up until it pops off the post and clean underneath it, then replace it by pressing the key straight down over the post until it snaps back in place.) You can pry the optical drawer cover open and then the optical drawer itself can be pryed out about 1/4 inch using a fingernail or fine-bladed knife; with the drawer open, shine a strong flashlight into the drive and check if you can see the black rubber ring that snakes through the optical drive's gears.
Re general sluggishness, if you normally shut down an OS X Mac overnight or leave it in system sleep, the cron maintenance tasks cannot run in their nominal 3 am timeframe. (Display-only sleep allows the maintenance tasks to run). You can leave the Mac in display-only sleep a weekend or two a month; you can manually Force Background Maintenance; or you can use a third-party utility such as OnyX to run the maintenance. Note that any system utility you use must be compatible with the OS version (e.g., use the Tiger version of OnyX with 10.4.x). You can also refer to Gulliver - OS X System maintenance.

  • Stroke issues - maybe file is corrupt?

I am working with a very big file. It is 1 page, 2 feet x 2 feet and contains over 1000 graphic boxes, each with an imported tiff file. I know I'm pushing InDesign to its limits, but up until now, after installing extra ram and keeping the file at "typical" display, InDesign has been performing well.
The problem is that though all the objects have no stroke - i've verified this in the swatches and stroke palette - a light gray line appears around each of the boxes. in some places, the gray line does not continue around the entire box. Frame edges are turned off.
I thought that maybe it was just a preview issue and tried printing the file, but the gray stroke remained.
I've also tried copying and pasting the contents of the file into a new indesign file, but the strokes still remain then too.
So, if anyone has any ideas of how to tackle this, I'd be greatly appreciative!

    >I've also tried copying and pasting the contents of the file into a new indesign file, but the strokes still remain then too.
What happens if instead of copying all of the contents of the original file, you copy only a small number. If that gets rid of the gray strokes, then try increasing the number copied over, until the problem reappears if at all.
If the problem occurs with only one object copied, try closing the original one, saving the new one, closing it, and reopen it. What then?
Also explore placing some of the tifs into a new fresh file. If the problem still shows, then it is nothing to do with the original file, but something in your installation. Try deleting the preferences.

Edit: Does it happen in Tiger? Check that even if you have to take it to another computer.
Edit 2: Also try an inx round trip.

  • EMac issue  Big One!!

    Hello,
I am an A+ certified PC Repair Tech. I run an eMac at home for graphic design and games. I was raised on mac but around here everyone is PC driven. My emac recently started locking up and then soon after started locking up with jitters on the screen. First thing I did was reseat my ram, then replaced the ram.. I opened the case and looked at the bottom of the "logic board" it has two capacitors that are kinda raised up. I am also in college for my second degree in graphic design and this computer is a major key in my education. My old iMac flower power cannot run Macromedia Suite 8 at all. MY S/N is not on the list, but it seems to be affected by the capacitor issue. Is apple accepting other machines other than the ones on the list? Also is there anything I can do to get the computer to function correctly. I tried the shift thing but then I cannot connect to the internet as I am one of the few dinosaurs out there on 56K.
    Thanks
    Robby

I have an iMac flower power, and the main reason for getting the emac was the iMac was becomming too slow to function on anything new. I run Macromedia Suite 8. I might borrow a old G4 tower from college and use that. Until I can get my eMac fixed. Does anyone know if Suite 8 will function on a 500Mhz G3 with 768MB ram? I am glad that my machine does fit in the repair options. Since I know I might call up the Apple Store and get my father to help me get it down there. I am pretty swift with Apple software I would not delete any extensions. I have used Mac since I was 4 y/o. and I deleted some extensions on OS 9 once and it was not pretty.. I've never had an OS X reason to before.. Thanks for your help..

  • N3120c software issues maybe?

Hello all. Just wondering if anyone here has had software issues with the 3120c?
The 2 I've had recently are frequent A2DP Bluetooth pairing dropout's while playing tunes, and when unlocking the key pad the phone locks up and reboots occasionally? The phone is running v7.16 so no updates just yet. Its no a big deal really but something that will need addressing if others are having these problems.
Also, why does the manual show RDS is available on the handset but no option to use this feature?
Generally speaking the 3120c is a good handset!

    m8,
Regarding RDS its automatic if it is available in your country when you turn on the radio. The same way as any stand alone radio that have that feature.

  • Wifi issues maybe solved

Make sure your router is channel on 11 (or the highest it could go possibly) not auto detect and that your WMM is enabled.
Solved it for me, tried deleting the phone and backing it up again, resetting network settings and even tried a soft reset..
Make sure you also put your password in as it is seen (some people might be messing up just because it typically is always case sensitive)

I'm having the same issue since 6.1.2. I worked throught the various checklists and nothing has worked. What I have noticed is most of the 'fixes' require me to do someithing with my home router. I don't understand that as I use my phone as a hotspot or internet connection while I'm away from home and on 3G. That part doesn't make sense.
When the phone is connected it is recognized in iTunes but not in the System Preferences Network Settings page.
I used to connect my phone to my Mac via USB and opt to use the USB Only option for HotSpot with the Mac WIFI off. The blue bar on the phone comes on indicating that HotSpot is working. It has worked for me like that until 6.1.2. Since then the USB Only option does not work and I have to use WIFI on both the phone and the Mac. If I'm lucky, I get a connection and can get my mail and do some surfing before it drops the connection. The blue bar that comes up on the phone is there indicating the hotspot is on, but the connection is lost. A dozen or so resets, of either my Mac or my phone, later and I might get a connection again. That's no way to do business.
All I did was update the phone when it told me there was an update available. Did I miss something?

  • Site definition issue (maybe???)

My desktop computer had some issues and I am having a hardware and operating system upgrade done on it. It had six hard drives, none of which were damaged and all of the data is intact. This data includes all of my DW CS4 sites which are in one of two directorys  (i.e, "Client A-M" and "Client N-Z"), under a client sub-directory in the client's name.
I have a free-standing docking station where I mounted the hard drive with the client files and copied them to an external drive which is attached to my laptop, which has a full CS4 Premium Design Suite, including DW CS4, installed. I have already edited and updated some sites, a couple with no problems, and a couple with some problems reocognizing and updating templates.
In a previous post, I addressed this issue and it was suggested that on the ones where I had problems, the issue was site definition files. I have just recieved a request to do some updating on a site which I have not opened on the laptop. As a prevention to avoid any problems, my quesiton is this:
Should I redefine the site in it's existing folder on the laptop as a new site since this installation of DW CS4 has never seen that site before and the subject site is not on its recognized list of sites.
Thanks in advance for you help,
    Joe
PS: What is the file extension for the site definition files, and where do they reside on the computer?
    J.

Without knowing the issues it's hard to determine.  You could always try to bring the files over.  Assuming your computer was setup with a RAID configuration and you didn't lose data then you should have no issues transferring the files.  But if you were running 6 independent hard drives and you have already run into issues you may want to consider just entering the data in fresh just to ensure no corruption down the road.  The files for the site definitions will vary.  Typically on the Mac they are located in the Library->Application Support->Adobe->Dreamweaver CS5 folder, on Windows it's hidden away in the Application Data folder.

  • GWIA Relay Issue, maybe the SPAMmers authenticated...

So I was greeted with a lovely issue this morning that is really driving me nuts. My mail system was relaying messages from [email protected] using a valid user on my system (MFouch). The IP address that was sending the messages appears to be in Lagos, Nigeria (41.203.64.250). I have been combing my GWIA, MTA, and POA logs and I am not seeing any POP/IMAP/SMTP auth from that IP address. The valid local user that was being abused "C/S dos" login was getting logged but from GWIA's internal IP address. I attached a MIME copy of the message.
My GWIA agent is setup to prevent relaying. I do allow relaying from some specifically defined internal addresses. I do allow POP3 in, but only specific users can use IMAP4 (silly Android issue). I require authentication for both POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP. I ran all of the different open relay tests that I am aware of (abuse.net, mxtoolbox.com) as well as tried to relay something via telnetting to my GWIA. I have attached my current GWIA flags as well. I just added /disallowauthrelay for now as a test/precaution.
I found TID 7008712 that confused, upset, and scared me all at the same time (GroupWise Internet Agents are relaying emails when they're not suppose to be relaying.). If what this TID says is correct, how can I continue to use GroupWise?
It looks like I have stopped the trouble for now. I added /disallowauthrelay as per TID7008712 (which will probably upset a few people). I renamed my gwac.db in case there was some corruption in my SMTP access control list. I changed the abused local user's password. I renamed all of my various GWIA directories (000.PRC, DEFER, GWHOLD, GWPROB, RECEIVE, RESULT, SEND, WPCSIN, and WPCSOUT) just to give me some time to clean out all of the deferrals, send items, and to be sure there is not a message queued somewhere. Members of my team are scanning the two machines this user uses as a precaution. I have also explicitly denied 41.203.64.250 access to my network at my perimeter.
Has any of the great minds out there in the Novell Forum Land seen this before or can point out my buffoonery?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jeff

    Hi.
I'm not quite sure where the uncertainty lies. The user yo uidentified
with the logins from GWIA has been hacked, e.g his password probably was
weak and brute forced, or gained by other means (has this user been in
    nigeria recently? ;))
I also don't quite understand the outrage on the TID. It merely explains
what is logical. If someone can authenticate, he can relay. There's
nothing to be overly concerned about, except your password security. You
may want to activate intruder detection... Of course there are other
means to possibly gat to know a users password, but brute force is the
    usual way...

  • Power Supply Issues maybe?

I have always had random and instant power downs. Which I initially attributed to heat. The machine is now shutting off instantly several times a day. It starts up and runs fine, but it is shutting down after anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 hours later. I am thinking it is a bad power supply that has gotten worse. I want to bounce this off the experts and see if there is anything else I can eliminate before buying a power supply?
I have reset the SMU I think. I could not find a button so I unplugged for 15 minutes. I ran AHT from cd without errors, ran disk utility from cd, and checked to see if the SMART status is verified. I use temperature monitor which has read as hot as 115, but according to what I am reading that is well below danger.
I did a safe restart to eliminate any font issues since I use a lot of fonts. I don't know what to look for in the console, but I saw nothing that looked suspicious. I am assuming since the AHT found no problems the logic board is functioning properly. Is that correct?
Can you suggest anything else to narrow down my issue?
Thanks for all your help. This machine is within a month of retirement, I think it senses something!

I have had exactly the same problem over the last couple of days and it drives you nuts! It started to happen just after I transferred some files to a mates cheap firewire drive....no idea why...
You can try actually pressing the SMU button

Also check all the bits inside are connected. The airport card can get loose in particular. Double check memory is pressed in etc.
I tried it all but to no avail until I read your post and tried Safe Restart. For some reason it dumped a load of files in my trash, but the issue seems to be gone (at least for now). I don't wanna detract from helping Kenny, but whilst peeps are looking if anyone can shed some light on what they are and whether I should bin them it would be good.

  • Access to Word ODBC security issue maybe

Hi I have a vba process in an access application that creates a word document and then saves it, automatically to a specific folder and name. This works as expected in windows xp and windows 7. However in windows 8/8.1 the process is halted and a saveas
dialog is opened to the users library folder with the default name of document1.
I am wondering whether this is because of some security setting? I have unsuccessfully tried setting UAC to the lowest setting.
Could this be a security issue? If yes any suggestions?
    Many thanks,
    Jonathan

    Hi,
As I known, the using of Document.save() is no different in Windows 7 and Windows 8.
Based on your description, this issue can be caused by configuration environment, please post back your Office version, VBA code and the information about environment here, so that we can determine which cause this issue.

What is the full version of the 11G Grid and RAC software used?
The racgimon monitors and collects metrics - and high cpu utilisation has been an issue (Bug 5503111) in the past.
You can bounce the node to determine if the problem goes away, or if not, how quick it resurfaces. Also check the relevant grid logs for potential errors in this regard.
You can also file this as a service request with Oracle Support - Grid is not really a simplistic s/w stack where errors are easy to diagnose and resolve. Something as "simple" as difference in the firmware of a h/w component can make a difference.. in other words, nothing related at all to the o/s itself, never mind to the cluster s/w stack.

  • Display issues, maybe?

My brother has an iMac G5 that recently hasn't been turning on when he tries to boot it up. He got it used from the library, and I don't know how old it is except that it probably is at least over a year, maybe 2? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just to tell you my story...
I bought a Macbook black in Mexico late 2007. not a week passed and the left shift key broke... that's ok.. I'm under warranty. I took it back and what they said amazed me. Keys on the keyboard are not on warranty! SAY WHAT????
yep.. Went to all Apple stores, Service centers, you name it.. the same answer.
Then I traveled to the states and went to the Small Dogs in Vermont, the apple distributor in that state. first thing they ask is do you have a warranty still? Yep! So leave it here and come back tomorrow.
AMAZING!!! free of charge, spanish keyboard and all!!! they changed everything!
Couldn't keep the old one though because it was done under warranty.
Thankfully nothing more happened to this lovely laptop!!!

  • Some Unknown Issue (Maybe RAM?)

    Hello everyone,
I've been using mac for about 2 years now, but I still consider myself "new" to them. I have been having constant issues in one regard since I've gotten the computer and I'm wondering if you could help me figure out the issue. Every single time I wish to do a clean install or system update (i.e. from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8), I get a message something along the lines of "Cannot copy necessary installation/support files". I've called AppleCare and they told me it's an issue with the install CD. They were very polite and sent me new install discs (yes, plural. They sent me a new disc every time I've called about this issue), and told me that a temporary fix is pulling out 1 stick of RAM before proceeding with the installation. This method works, but regardless of how many CDs they send me, I still need to remove a stick of RAM in order to do these clean installs/system updates. My computer came with 4 GB of RAM and I have not changed out a single piece of hardware (nor have I dropped it or any form of abuse). I tried using the TechTools that came with AppleCare, and it says everything is working fine. It's really inconvenient to have to open the back, pull out a stick of RAM, do the installation, and then put the RAM back in every single time there's a system update or I want to start fresh. I was just wondering if any of you would happen to know a fix to this? I thank you for your help in advance.

The two reasons I wipe everything regularly is 1) I come from Windows
Don't treat your Mac like you would a Windows machine...  that can actually lead to more problems than if you just left it alone.  Macs do not need regular maintenance, just regular backups and updates to the system and any apps.  It's also a good idea to verify the hard drive with Disk Utility before installing any system updates.
    2) As I go on without wiping the computer, I get an increasing number of kernel panics
As has already been pointed out, that could be due to the hardware.  It certainly sounds like you may have some kind of hardware problem.  Pulling a stick of RAM in order to install the system is definitely a sign that something abnormal is going on...  I'd be suspicious of bad RAM because of this cure.  Did the Apple techs perform an extended RAM test?  Those take quite a long time, so if you just stopped in at the Genius Bar and had someone look at it briefly, they didn't do that.  You can perform such a test with Apple Hardware Test, and may also want to consider trying Rember.
The other frequent cause of kernel panics is bad third-party software.  Coming from Windows, you are likely to have anti-virus software installed, and several of the popular AV tools have been known to cause kernel panics for at least some people.  And they provide very imperfect protection anyway...  see my Mac Malware Guide.  You can also post a kernel panic log here, and knowledgeable people can help you decipher it to find a cause.

  • SRST issue maybe.

    Hey Guys ..
I'm having a funny issue at one of my sites. We had a cct hit from out telco and instead of going into SRST the phones apparently reset themselves. I have no idea why and was wondering if someone has seen this happen.
My SRST config is as follows:
    call-manager-fallback
    secondary-dialtone 9
    max-conferences 8 gain -6
    transfer-system full-consult
    ip source-address 172.xx.xx.xx port 2000
    max-ephones 150
    max-dn 200
system message primary SRST Fallback Active
It's configred to match on my CUCM.
The cct was about 4 minutes, I thought that as soon as the phones realized there was no CUCM they would simply go into SRST and then back when the link came back up. But what the users at the site described was that the phones reboot.
    Thanks,
    BR

    What is "CCT"?
What phone models are you using?  Has SRST worked before?

  • EMac issues

    Hi,
    I don't remember which OSX I have but I know it's greater than 3.0.
A few weeks ago I turned my eMac off normally, just before I went to bed. The next morning I tried to turn my eMac on and it would not. At first there was nothing, no lights, no fans, nothing. After a while I pressed the power button again, I heard 2 clicks inside the eMac, still nothing.
I searched the web and read of simiarproblems that wad fixed by a PMu reset. I have reset the PMU and it still won't turn on, I replaced the battery and it still won't turn on.
A few days ago the mac somehow turned on, it went onto the gray screen and the chime played. The little loading circle thing came on. After a little while it just turned off again. After trying so hard it turned bak on, back on the gray screen th chime played and it went through to th blue screen where I logged in. It worked and I went on firefox. Then the screen went weird, it shrank and distorted and morphed around etc. But the mac still didn't turn off.
After switchingnit off it turned off again and I used it fine for a few hours and even days.
Now it won't turn on again.
What do you guys think the problem is????

Well any idea what it could be? The fuse is fine, the power cord is fine, there isliterally nothing I can identify wrong with the hardware since I done all the PMU and PRAM reset things, still no work.
I did notice one thing, 20 mins ago after hitting the power button 33 times it switched on, I hit command+s the screen came up, at the near top of the terminal there was an entry that read "pmu was probably reset somehow"
since when did computers talk like that lol?
Anyone have any ideas please let me know, the computer works fine when it reaches the desktop. Getting to that stage is very difficult and requires luck.
