Emacs crashes Xorg

Hello. I have a unique problem that I have been hitherto unable to solve: Emacs crashes Xorg. These crashes don't always happen instantly -- in fact there doesn't appear to be any discernible pattern to them whatsoever.
About 20% of the time, Xorg (and consequently Emacs) will crash as soon as I enter the start command in a terminal emulator. The remaining 80% of the time, it will crash somewhere between 1 and 5 minutes into an Emacs session. I am running OpenBox and LightDM on top of X, and I don't know if that information is relevant to you or not.
Here is the output of Xorg log

I'd appreciate any help I can get on this matter as Emacs is a vital program for me (I use it as a Lisp IDE)

Anyone available to help? The related thread posted offers a work-around solution which is to blacklist radeon, but since I have an AMD graphics card and am using the xf86-video-ati driver, wouldn't this completely break Xorg? I can't use the catalyst driver either, as support for my video card has been discontinued.
Still a pressing issue for me, and I wouldn't bother you all here if I could find the solution online, but I've been unable to do so. Most similiar issues that I have unearthed have not been solved. If it's any help, I've also noticed one program that crashes Xorg in the same random way that Emacs does, which is LibreOffice. I'm going to try logging in as root to see if that helps the issue but I suspect that it won't. Again, any help would be appreciated, just let me know if I can provide any other information.

Edit- the --nocrashhandler option results in no problems...

Maybe a better debug log: http://pastie.org/10101800
Is there anyone having also these problems?
NOTE: I closed the issue and mark it as "solved" since it seems to be OK since the update to emacs 24.5...

I wouldn't mind, but it is not really solved. Today it happened again... I'm analyzing whether some (emacs) package I installed could be the reason for these crashes...

  • Emacs crashes

For some days I opened this issue (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=195913) which I closed myself, because I thougt it was solved. But it isn't. I'm experiencing emacs crashes. I think (but I am not sure) this began with the last big update of gtk3.
I compiled emacs with debug options and got now this backtrace (http://pastie.org/10111821). Can anyone interpret this? Or should I ask the emacs people?
I can not manage to reproduce exactly the crash, but it always happens when I save a buffer in a console in which I open a emacsclient with emacsclient -nw...
    Many thanks in advance!

Take a look at the wiki, it is described quite well https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/De … ing_Traces.
Yes, it is described quite well, but I dont get really useful debug traces with emacs...

  • Emacs and Xorg

    Hi!
I've done a full system upgrade, and xorg and emacs were upgraded to their latest version in the package repository.  When I tried to start emacs afterwards, X crashed.  I've edited my .emacs as the crash was apparently caused by the fact that I use "monotype-courier new" as my default font.  Has anyone encountered a similer crash?   I have no idea why this happens..
    Thanks!

I have this crash with the CVS version as well.  I'll look into the xorg.conf file, but I don't believe this has changed.
I can select the monotype courier-new font in xfontsel by the way, so I guess that already rules out the possibility of a missing font path?
Regards, and thanks for the answer!

  • [SOLVED] Xinerama crashing xorg 1.9

After installing the latest xorg packages (1.9) I can no longer use xinerama when I have two monitors connected.
I've tried this with several WMs, and none of them want to start with xinerama activa and an external monitor on VGA from my laptop.
I'm using the latest nvidia binary drivers (not beta) and both monitros work if I disable xinerama, and I can run xinerama if I do not have anything connected to the VGA out.
Anyone else noticed this and know what to do about it?

    /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf

  • [Solved] mga crashes xorg

    Hi all.
I have a Matrox Millennium II and every time i use mga (xf86-video-mga) on the Screen section of xorg.conf, the Xorg crashes. I have tried to use the xorg.conf generated by Xubuntu 7.10 (which runs great on that distro) on Arch, but no success.
Here's the xorg.conf (generated by Xubuntu):
    # xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
    # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
    # values from the debconf database.
    # Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
    # (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
    # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
    # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
    # package.
    # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
    # again, run the following command:
    # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

    @eldarion,
Have you had a look at the unofficial matrox drivers at:
    http://forum.tuxx-home.at/viewtopic.php?t=153 ?
Don't know about your card, but this is the mga driver I am using with my Millennium G400 and G450 cards.
Now, the .run installer might complain about "different X server versions ... because ABI incompatible", so add the following to the [X-:*-Core] section in /opt/kde/share/config/kdm/kdmrc :
    ServerArgsLocal=-ignoreABI
Also, set in the xorg.conf Device section:
    Option "HWCursor" "false"
(In fact, you can just copy the files mga_drv.so and mga_hal_drv.so to /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/ if necessary.)
glxinfo and glxgears should check out okay with this mga driver.

  • Suspend resume failed - crashed xorg

    Hello,
I've just installed Archlinux on Macbook Pro (9,2).
Everything is almost find but I have troubles with suspend/resume.
It should work out-of-box but it doesn't.
Resume from suspend doesn't work - there is always KDM login screen shown, because Xorg crash during resume.
    From xorg log:
        [   591.393] (EE) FBDEV(0): FBIOPUTCMAP: Invalid argument
    From journalctl:
Oct 02 10:36:16 mek systemd[1491]: Failed to open private bus connection: Failed to connect to socket /run/user/1000/dbus/user_bus_socket: No such file or directory
There might be some connection with this problem:  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=170008 ?
    Thanks for help!

    Hi,
there is one similarity with the linked problem and my problem. The error from journactl:
Failed to open private bus connection: Failed to connect to socket /run/user/1000/dbus/user_bus_socket: No such file or direc
But it's true that root cause for the linked problem is something different. I just thought that there could be some hint or something...
About the workaround, you mean this script:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 2#p1331782
    Doesn't work for me unfortunately
Right now I'm searching and googling how to fix the error from journalctl.

  • Emac Crashes With Any Application.  Please Help?

    Can anyone please help?
I have had an Emac computer for years now.  I hardly ever use it, but it has a lot of my old video files and documents on it.  I mainly work with my macbook pro.  Until recently, my Emac has been working fine, but I tried to use it today and it seems to suddenly be fubar.
Here's what happened.  I wanted to take an old (.mov) video file and transfer it to my macbook pro.  I used an 8GB pen drive.  The transfer to the pen drive seemed to take literally no time, but the video file also still seemed to play from the pen drive on the Emac, so I thought it was fine.  Took it to the macbook pro.  The video file wouldn't play, it was just a black screen for the duration of the video.
I decided to try and export another version on the Emac, in case that would help.  I had a version I'd colour-corrected in Final Cut Express, so I opened that.  The Emac then did what I have this evening learned is a "kernel panic".  I didn't know what that was though, so I tried again and the same thing.
The original edit of the video had been done in iMovie, so I tried to open that next.  It opened, but as soon as I tried to play the video, "kernel panic".
I tried again and no "kernel panic", but everything crashed and the entire system became unresponsive, so I had to restart.
I decided I would try to burn the .mov onto a CD and transfer it that way.  During the burning process, the system crashed.  When I restarted, the computer was unable to read anything on the disc.
I then went to do some online research.  When I opened firefox, the system crashed.
Can anyone tell me what's going on and how I can start to go about getting things working again?
    Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry. Been under the weather with a flu bug that triggered some "loverly" asthma things! Good to see you back, although I had hoped it would be to say you had the old eMac all sorted and learning new tricks.
I'm rather at a standstill here. The fact that the capacitors you can see are not affected doesn't necessarily mean those that are elsewhere under the cover are also OK. There are reports that people have removed the logic board to find the hidden capacitors leaking even though the ones visible in the RAM door were fine
Because a PRAM battery tests at 3.6V in hand doesn't always mean it's producing that under load when installed. However, the eMacs are not so picky about PRAM battery power as older models, and there are a couple of easy things that get you around a dead/weak battery anyway:
    1) Boot from a system CD/DVD, then immediately restart booting from  the hard drive.
    2) Boot while holding command + option + p + r and keep holding that combo until you hear a total of three startup chimes, then let go the keys and allow booting to continue.
The first method uses startup values from the optical disk and the second one resets the computer's PRAM back to factory defaults.
I keep coming back to your symptoms being the same as the eMac I worked with that WAS in the affected SN range. The computer would boot fine, but any app opened crashed within seconds.
.  I feel like you need some cheap or free hands-on help with this--at least someone you can talk to on the phone in real time. Have you looked for a Mac User Group (MUG) near you? I know you live where the population density can put neighbors miles away and some cities light-years away, but a MUG is a good place to find a guru on older models. The other option would be to ask of the IT staff (the worker-bees, not the bosses) at a school of university that has used Macs. Some great resources there.  Here's the find-a-MUG link:  http://appleusergroupresources.com/find-a-group/  We just retired our last eMac. My wife has been using a 1.42G model almost exactly 7 years and, as she's more into social networking now to stay in touch with our adult children, and our tax software will no longer run on PowerPC. I talked her into a refurbed iMac 21.5-inch mid-2011 we got directly from Apple for under US$1000. Nice computer.

  • Emacs crashes with C-x 5 0

I have an arch laptop on which emacs reliably crashes.  More precisely, whenever I type C-x 5 0 to close a window, all windows close and then emacs gets into a tight loop burning CPU.  This problem is driving me crazy.  Stranger still, I have an arch desktop on which the problem does not occur.
The machines are configured almost identically, except that the laptop (which experiences the problem) has intel graphics, while the desktop uses nvidia.  I've reproduced the problem with "emacs -q" (ruling out configuration files).  The problem happens if I ssh from the laptop to itself and forward X11, but not if I ssh between the two machines in either direction.
I have run memtest86+ on the laptop.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled emacs.  I have reinstalled all of base.  I have even run sha256sum on the emacs binaries and all shared libraries of "ldd emacs" on the two machines, and verified that everything is identical except for libGL (because of intel vs. nvidia).  Finally, I re-installed all 869 packages on the laptop, to no avail.
I've tried to build the arch emacs package from source, so as to debug it, but the PKGBUILD in abs is broken on both of my machines.  Upon linking temacs, I get errors of undefined references in image.o (mostly to graphicsmagick sounding functions from libGraphicsMagickWand).
Does anyone have any suggestions?  For what it's worth, the problem machine is a Pentium core i7 M 620, while the working machine has a Xeon E5620 CPU.  The working CPU has 4 flags the other one doesn't, namely pdpe1gb, pcid, dca, and epb, but these are all CPU features for the kernel, so shouldn't be resulting in a different instruction set.
    Thanks.

Okay, for anyone else who is getting frustrated by this, the workaround is to downgrade to the gtk2 toolkit from gtk3.  I just edited the PKGBUILD file to change gtk3 to gtk2, and also disabled imagemagick (since that causes build errors).  The working configure line is here:
      ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --libexecdir=/usr/lib \
        --localstatedir=/var --with-x-toolkit=gtk2 --with-xft --without-imagemagick
The problem must be caused by some weird i915 graphics driver error triggered by gtk3.

  • Installing emacs with xorg

    Hello,
I just installed arch last night and managed to get my network up and running in less than 20 minutes! So far, I am loving it! The problem I have is: how do I go about installing emacs with x.org server? When I try installing emacs it requires xaw3d which by itself asks for xfree86 which apparently conflicts with xorg.
In general, how to install packages and 'ignore' certain dependancies? I realize the popular opinion is that it's bad, but, for example, I know I don't need xorg to run just plain console emacs.
I'm coming from the world of Slackware and I'm sort of used to no-dependancy-checking so...
    A very nice forum BTW,

  • Dropbox crashes Xorg

    Hello,
for some weeks dropbox 3.0.5-1 from AUR crashes the whole Xorg session for me immediately when it is started. I've tried reinstalling, removing all ~/.dropbox* files, trying dropbox-experimental, running strace on dropbox etc. but * can not stop the crashing or figure out what the cause is. There is nothing helpful in journalctl or /var/log/Xorg.0.log, just messages from other programs that fails when Xorg dies.
How can even Xorg die from another application?, and how can I debug this finding the cause of the crashes?
    Thanks,

Uninstall dropbox via pacman. Then if Xorg works fine, try to use the non-installable dropbox Install Dropbox via command line.
There was (still is?) a problem with systemtray icon.

  • EMac crashing

    G'day,
My 512/149Gb 1.25Ghz eMac purchased Aug-04 has recently started to crash badly (ie up to 3 times in 1 day), where by the entire system freezes up.
The only semi-common association with when the system is crashing is the use of Office X (v10.0.0), though it has happened when those apps (Word, Excel & PP) weren't running.
Other symptoms have been - trying to open Date/Time and it instead opens a folder... No responce when trying to open the System Prefs from the Apple menu...
Over the 18months since buying the computer I've gradually upgraded from 10.3.4. to 10.3.9 as the updates have come along. I've tried re-installing the 10.3.9 upgrade, but have continued to have problems. I've run programs like Janitor, Cocktail, Rember, but no luck.
What should I try next? Could this be more than software problems?
    cheers
    Travis

Actually, if the problem with this mid-2004 eMac is due to the bad capacitor problem that's been cropping up (see eMac freezes randomly, open window turns into broken up jibber), then you can contact AppleCare and/or Apple Customer Relations, or just directly contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AARP). An AARP can open the eMac and directly check for tell-tale bulging / leaking capacitors.
When you call AppleCare, if you're outside the initial 90-day free phone support (three years if you purchased the extended AppleCare warrenty), you'll be asked to provide a credit card number; the charge to that card is supposed to be waived if the problem turns out to be a hardware issue covered under warrenty. (If your warrenty has run out you can ask at the end of the call to have the charge waived anyway.) You'll need to describe the problem, plus the steps you've taken to try to troubleshoot the issue, mostly because the first-tier support people have to run through a script before you can ask to be escalated to a supervisor who can authorize out-of-warrenty service.
When you reach a supervisor, you want to describe the symptoms, the date your eMac was purchased, and mention the referenced Apple Discussions thread. Ask to have an AARP authorized to inspect the eMac and ask that if the capacitor problem is detected taht the logic board replacement be provided by Apple. You may be asked to pay for the AARP labor with the logic board replaced free; you may get the whole repair done free; you may get nothing --- it seems to depend n part on how persuavive you are talking to the AppleCare supervisor. If you're turned down by AppleCare, some have reported success going to Apple Customer Relations. As with any transaction, being firm but polite is key (way too many posters have written to denounce the service they recieved, when their own account of the interaction makes you wonder no one's figured a way to reach through the phone lines to strangle them for rudeness).
Before you do anything else, check there isn't a problem with the hard drive or the OS or with OS kernel extensions. Does the computer behave if you Start Up in Safe Mode? What's reported by Disk Utility> Repair Disk when you run it from the OS X Install disc's Installer menu, as described in Using Disk Utility and fsck? What's reported by Apple Hardware Test? Also go through the "applications quit unexpectedly" and related sections of Dr. Smoke's The X Lab: The X-FAQs.
You want to rule out any other explanations of your problems before concluding it's the bad capacitor freezing issue. Good luck.

  • EMac Crashing Even After Clean Install

I've got an eMac that I bought late 2005. It's been working fine for seven months, but two weeks ago began having random crashes. The crashes seem to occur regardless of which applications are running or in the foreground. TechTool Pro finds no issues; neither does Disk Warrior. Performed OF resets. Tried different mouse and keyboard. Booted from factory disc and ran permissions, all repairs on startup volume. That didn't help. Neither did the Apple Hardware Test that came with the Mac. No errors or problems of any kind were found. Finally, I did a clean install of the OS, sure that would fix whatever was causing this. It did not. A crash occurred while copying some files from a local server. This bit appeared in that login account's console log:
    June 29 08:21:59 copy9 kernel: ** ASIC Hang Log End **
    June 29:08:22:05 copy9 kernel: ATIRadeon::submit_buffer: Overflowed block waiting for FIFO space. Have 5, need 6. RBBM_STATUS 0x8009c100. VAPCNTLSTATUS 0x00000002
Also, FWIW, if I boot from a G4 Apple Diagnostic CD, I get this message: "Invalid memory access at: %SRR0:00000000 %SRR1: 00083030.
Anybody have a clue about this? Do I have a RAM DIMM gone bad (even though test softare finds no problem with memory)? Problem with onboard video? Network? Am I missing something?
    Thanks for any ideas...

Okay, let me clarify. Sorry for not being clearer earlier. My computer had been freezing and crashing and just not working for me for quite some time BEFORE I did the erase and install. That's why I finally did an erase and install as a last resort. The thing is, erasing and installing didn't fix anything. I ran Repair Permissions both before and after resinstalling. I still can't do anything unless I start up in safe mode. I am beginning to wonder if it may be a simple matter of needing more memory? Here is my embarassing computer information:
I have an eMac, PowerPC G4; OS version 10.3.4.
    CPU speed: 1.25 GHz
I assume my RAM is this DDR SDRAM?: 256MB
The only peripherals I have besides the keyboard and mouse are a hpdeskjet 960c printer and an iSight, but I have not had either of those hooked up when I have tried to boot up my computer since doing the erase and install and it is still crashing.
Hopefully this might be helpful in some way. I'm pretty lost here so you may be offering help to a lost cause and I'll just have to give in and take it somewhere, but thanx for taking the time to read my posts and try and point me in the right direction!

  • [Solved] Firefox 7.0.1-1 crashing xorg 1.11.1-2

    Hello,
Today I updated to the newest xorg package available in the pacman repos. Everything seems to be fine, I'm able to use intellij, and do most other things in gnome without problem. However, when I try to run firefox, X restarts and I'm left at my login screen.
    whodevil>firefox
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".
XIO: fatal IO error 2 (No such file or directory) on X server ":0.0"
after 30 requests (30 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
firefox: Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server :0.0.
When I look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log there doesn't appear to be anything suspicious other than each time xorg restarts it rolls the log. When I go into the Xorg.0.log.old, I don't see any messages related to xorg being shutdown.
However when I look in the kernel.log I see this:
    Nov 7 13:59:42 localhost kernel: [ 165.690978] [drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id
    Nov 7 13:59:42 localhost kernel: [ 166.110186] [drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id
    Nov 7 14:01:21 localhost kernel: [ 265.047653] [drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id
    Nov 7 14:01:21 localhost kernel: [ 265.466850] [drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id
Does anyone have any ideas? Is there other information I'm missign that would help me figure out the problem?
    thanks,
    whodevil
