How to I get my emails to stop being rejected because the recipients server does not allow relaying?

I had this problem with my iPad.  You need to set your outgoing mail server to match your data provider rather than your email ISP.  For example, my data provider for the iPad is Telstra and their mail server is mail.bigpond.com but my email account is through my home ISP Bordernet so when I had my outgoing SMTP as mail.bordernet.com.au all my outgoing emails would give me the same error until I changed the settings on my iPad so that the outgoing SMTP server i mail.bigpond.com.
