Empty double quotes appearing in contacts
I recently discovered that several of my contacts had, below the name, a pair of quotation marks with nothing between them. Further searching leads me to conclude that it's somehow tied to the Nickname field. Those where this occurs used to have contents in this field but are now empty. And the iPhone itself doesn't offer any means of removing the empty field.
I've tried making changes inside Address Book itself, where that nickname field is no longer present on any of those affected entries, but no joy.
Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how I might remove these unsightly things? They're not causing trouble, just annoying to me.
FYI, my iPhone is a 4GB model purchased the day they became available and has the latest update applied (1.1.2).
= Steve =
I've already tried both. But to be absolutely clear...
I have completely removed any content from the Nickname field in the iPhone itself for those contacts exhibiting this problem, and then sync'd with my MacBook Pro. No relief.
I've then gone to each of those contacts in Address Book on the MacBook Pro and confirmed that the Nickname field isn't even present. In order to try and force a change, I even modified some of the other fields there. No relief.

Empty double quotes/ speechmarks appearing in nickname field contacts
Hi,
I've now got "" in the nickname field for every one of my contacts on my iPhone.
This is particulaury annoying as it shows up directly below the name in the main box at the top for every contact.
I believe it may be associated with Spanning Sync, as it happened when i was fiddling with that.
If i go to an individual contact, add some text, then remove it the quotes disappear, but i cant do that by hand for 500 contacts!
Any ideas?
Thanks,
DavidI've already tried both. But to be absolutely clear...

Extracting data in .txt which is enclosed in double quote," "
Hello everyone,
I am trying to read data from a .txt file which look like below.
"13.000000,393.000000 13.000000,291.000000 92.000000,284.000000 94.000000,380.000000 64.000000,385.000000 13.000000,388.000000 "The problem is every time i tried to read and save the data, i also save the double quote sign. Is there anyway to ignore the double quote sign? I am using the below coding to read and save the data in double array. Anyway will be great.

I have been trying to figure out my problem for several hours, but still didn't get it. Hope to get an idea from you guys. My code is as follows:
var astr;
var outCr ="|";
var outLf = "\u0000";
var cr = "\n";
var lf ="\r";
var ddQuote=""";
var dtQuote='\"';
astr = "<%=firstDesc%>";
astr.replace(outCr,cr);
astr.replace(outLf,lf);
astr.replace(ddQuote, dtQuote);
while (astr.indexOf(outCr) > 0) {
z = astr.indexOf(outCr);
astr = astr.substring(0, z) + cr + astr.substring(z+1,astr.length );
while (astr.indexOf(outLf) > 0) {
z = astr.indexOf(outLf);
astr = astr.substring(0, z) + lf + astr.substring(z+1,astr.length );
while (astr.indexOf(ddQuote) > 0) {
z = astr.indexOf(ddQuote);
astr = astr.substring(0, z) dtQuote astr.substring(z+1,astr.length );
document.form1.description.value=astr;
The value of firstDesc is a very big string from the database that contains carriage return, linefeed, single quote and double quote. It needs to be displayed in a HTML text area. Now everything works fine except the double quote. A firstDesc value containing double quote will not appear in the text area, and it even stop my jsp page and disable other buttons. But if I get rid of the code handling the double quote, everything works fine. What's the problem?maybe you should ask this question in a JavaScript forum.

It is a compile-time error for a line terminator to appear after the opening " and before the closing matching ".
In other words, string literals cannot span lines.
You can use the concatenation operator ( + ) to fix this:
String myLiteral = "A long line " +
"Another long line " +
"Another long line, etc.";
If you're going to ever print out that string literal (like for debugging purposes), it would probably be better to have a return at the end of each line (\n):
String myLiteral = "A long line\n" +
"Another long line\n" +
"Another long line, etc.";

I am trying to pass in a calc script string from a Perl script to a MaxL script. The calc script needs double quotes around some of the member names (yes, I know I can create aliases with underscores to work around this, but I can't believe this isn't possible). I can escape the double quote characters in Perl, no problem. But the double quotes just get stripped by MaxL. Here is an example:<BR><BR>MAXL> echo 'I am "quoting" this';<BR><BR>I am "quoting" this<BR><BR>MAXL> set X = 'I am "quoting" this';<BR><BR>MAXL> echo $X;<BR><BR>I am quoting this<BR><BR>MAXL><BR><BR>There is nothing in the docs about escaping double quote characters. I've tried using backslash, no luck there. I've tried using double double quotes and they all get stripped. I've tried doing this inside single quoted strings and double quoted strings - no joy whatsoever. The funny thing is the example above, where simply echoing the literal string works, but assigning it to a variable strips out the double quotes.<BR><BR>Does anyone know how to get double quotes into a MaxL string variable? There has to be a way...<BR><BR>Thanks,<BR><BR>James
Yes, I've dealt with enclosing variables in double quotes in order for MaxL to parse them properly, but what I'm trying to do is use a variable that contains a double quote. Such as:<BR><BR> set QuoteVar = 'I am "quoting" this';<BR><BR>I'm trying to set substitution variables via MaxL, and some of my existing sub vars have double quotes in them so that they can be used to store member names that appear in calc scripts. As I said, I know I can accomplish this with an alias table that creates a version of the member name that doesn't need quotes, but that's a whole deal to maintain just for this one thing and it seems overly burdensome for such a simple task.<BR><BR>Also, as I said, MaxL does fine with double quotes in literal strings, it's only when assigned to variables that it always strips them out. I want to create a relatively generic script for setting sub vars, so I need to pass variables around. Just calling MaxL from Perl and passing in parameters that get converted to $1, $2, etc. causes these double quotes to get stripped.<BR><BR>So, is there any way around this?<BR><BR>Thanks,<BR><BR>James

How do I get rid of double entries in my Contacts?
I sync a 3rd party software, DejaOffice, from my iPad to my PC via Outlook. (DejaOffice is an integrated program with Calendar, Contacts, To-do List, and other features.) DejaOffice allows for syncing to Apple Calendar & Contacts. (Synicing to Contacts is especially important on my iPhone so it recognizes incoming calls in call display.) When I sync to Apple Calendar & Contacts, I often get double entries in both the Apple software, and DejaOffice. So, I have turned off syncing to Apple Contacts and Calendar from DejaOffice. I have just spent an hour deleting the double/triple entries in Contacts in my iCloud from my PC, and want to push the corrected list to my iPad & iPhone 5. I can't see how to delete the contacts in iPad or iPhone (which still have double & triple entries). If I turn on iCloud Contacts and Calendar in either device, it tells me it will merge the data, and I don't want the double entries any more, so I'd like to delete all contacts on iPad & iPhone, and then push the corrected iCloud list to both devices so they are all on the same page. I can't seem to figure out how to delete my Contacts or Calendar entries on iPad or iPhone so the merge only contains the corrected list from the iCloud. Can anyone help me with this?
First, export your contact from iCloud.com and save them on your computer in a safe spot some where (like you desktop). Use this to help you do this: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3606
Next, on both of your devices, go to Settings > iCloud and turn on contacts and select Merge. Then turn off contacts and select 'Delete form my [device]' when prompted.
Now go back to iCloud.com and select a contact (yes they will all be messed up again) and select Command+A on a Mac or Control+A on a PC to select all of the contacts. Tap the delete key on your keyboard (or right click /control click a contact and select delete).
You iPhone, iPad and iCloud.com should not be empty for contacts.
Go back to Settings > iCloud on both devices and turn on contacts again (you should not see merge this time).
Next, go back to iCloud.com and import your contacts (those exported .vcards). You can either drag and drop them into the empty contacts list in your web browser, or you can use the gear icon to import.
You cleaned up contacts should import correctly into iCloud.com and sync to both of your devices.
Good luck. -

Using environment variable / double quotes in "Arguments" in "Server Start"
I have an admin server, NodeManager, and 1 managed server, all on the same machine (windows). I am trying to enter something similar to this to the arguments field in the Server Start tab:
-Dmy.property=%USERPROFILE%\someDir\someJar.jar
But when the managed server is started it throws this exception:
Error opening zip file or JAR manifest missing : %USERPROFILE%\someDir\someJar.jar
It appears that the environment variable is not being translated into it's value. It is just passed on to the managed server as plain-text. I tried surrounding the path with double quotes (") but the console validates the input and does not allow this: *"Arguments may not contain '"'"*
Even editing the config.xml file manually cannot work, as the admin server fails to startup after this:
<Critical> <WebLogicServer> <BEA-000362> <Server failed. Reason: [Management:141266]Parsing failure in config.xml: java.lang
.IllegalArgumentException: Arguments may not contain '"'.>
I also tried using %20 to no avail, it is just passed as %20.
I thought that perhaps this had something to do with the spaces in the value of %USERPROFILE% (which is "C:\documents and settings.."), but the same thing happens with other env. variables which point to other directories with no spaces.
_My question:_
Is there any supported way of :
using double quotes? what if i have to reference a folder with spaces in it's name?
reference an environment variable? What if i have to rely on it's value for distributed servers where i do not know in advance the variable's value?

Double quotes in function and procedure names when using impdp
When viewing a function in the original database, it looks like:
CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION TA_ACTIVITY_D_GEN_FNC
After doing an expdp and impdp to restore a development database, it now looks like
CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION "TA_ACTIVITY_D_GEN_FNC"
and also has 2 blank lines at end of function.
This causes us problems when trying to use various utilites to compare differences in production and development. Now every function and procedure shows up as being different.
Can someone please explain why and what can be done to avoid this from happening?
Edited by: user6116705 on Jun 15, 2010 7:52 AMfrom old exp, here is the first line of the create procedure statement:
CREATE FORMAT71 PROCEDURE "SECURE_DML"
You can see the double quotes. I don't understand why you wouldn't see the same compare issue with old exp. I was wondering what you were using for compare since it would let me know where to look for anything that has changed from the original create to the create performed by data pump. I remember there being an issue in this area. I just don't remember if it was extra spacing, upcasing, or something else or multiple changes. You could contact Oracle support to see if there is a fix and if it is backported to your version.
The only other way you can possibly fix this (and it would be a huge pain) would be to run impdp with a sqlfile and then edit the sqfile to remove the double quotes and to remove any extra spacing/extra lines. A patch from Oracle would certainly be easier if one was available.

Embedded double quotes in a quoted string not working.
It seems that Numbers doesn't process embedded double quotes correctly in a quoted string. Is this an issue that Apple are aware about? Any fixes planned? Is this an issue that Apple are aware about? Any fixes planned?
This is not an issue in Excel, but I'd prefer to use Numbers.To run Hiroto's script, copy and paste into AppleScript Editor. Click the compile "hammer" to make sure the copy/paste went well. Then (still in AppleScript Editor click the run button. Then, back in Numbers, click once in a cell in an existing table, and paste.
To run the service in the post immediately above Hiroto's, just click the link in my post and doubleclick the downloaded .workflow package. (You may have to go to System Preferences > Privacy & Security and click "Download Anyway"). It then appears automatically in your Numbers > Services menu. Then to run the script just choose the item in the menu item CSV to Tabs on Clipboard.
You can uninstall the Service at any time by holding down the option key while in Finder and from the menu Go > Library > Services.
If you have a chance to try these, would be interested in hearing back whether they worked for you. They are working well on my setup here.

FTP "PWD" and unescabe double quotes
HI
I am using LV8.2.1 and the internet toolkit.
There is a FTP function called "PWD"(print working directory) who I think got a bug.
It don't put out the working direktory.
It take the reply text ( ex: Current working directory is "fs")and use the subVI "unescabe double quotes.vi" to remove the quotes, but this subVI need to have a string where the hole text is surrounded with double qoutes.
The FTP "PWD" function send a string like this( ex: Current working directory is "fs") to the subVI and that result in an empty string out.
Take a look at the attached pictures.
regards Bjarne
Attachments:
FTP [PWD]_BD.png 5 KB
Unescape Double Quotes_BD.png 11 KBHi Bjarne,
what FTP server are you using? It seems your FTP server doesn't follow the protocol. The response to a "PWD" should be like this:
257 "/path/on/server" [is current directory.]
It should start with the 257 code, followed by the path surrounded by double quotes.
If the FTP server follows the protocol the PWD VI works just fine.
As a workaround, you can use the "reply string" output of the PWD VI and use a match pattern to find the portion string between double quotes.

URGENT!! CELLWRAPPER single and double quot issues???
REP-50003: Bad parameter: CELLWRAPPER='I get this error whenever I try and use single or double quotes as a cellwrapper.
However if I do [SPACE][SPACE] as a cell wrapper this works fine?Is this a bug? I'm sure we have version "10.1.2.0.2"?It does appear to be a bug. Look here on Metalink for details.

Ping and editing and double quotes
Couple of issues using the Ping to comment and send email.
1) It appears that using double quotes in either a comment on a Ping invite or a Recent Activity Item appears to cause problems. When referencing other songs/album/content I tend to quote them in the recent activity item comment and this causes an error.
2) Not sure exactly how this happens, but a couple of times I have managed to delete my whole comment. It seems to occur when deleting in the middle of paragraph of text. Anyway, when this occurs the undo does not seem to work.
Anybody notice these behaviors?Thanks for the tip! This worked for me for my invitation to friends to the "Ping" service. Non-specific error with quotes, but with Quotes removed, works fine.

SSRS Report Returning Double Quote string from a Single Quote String
Hi, I'm getting weird thing in resultset from SSRS report when executed. When I pass parameter to a report, which passes String that has single quote value to a split function , it returns rows with double quote.
For example following string:
'N gage, Wash 'n Curl,Murray's, Don't-B-Bald
Returns:
''N gage, Wash ''n Curl,Murray''s, Don''t-B-Bald
through SSRS report.
Here is the split function Im using in a report.
CREATE Function [dbo].[fnSplit] (
@List varchar(8000),
@Delimiter char(1)
Returns @Temp1 Table (
ItemId int Identity(1, 1) NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY ,
Item varchar(8000) NULL
As

Declare @item varchar(4000),
@iPos int
Set @Delimiter = ISNULL(@Delimiter, ';' )
Set @List = RTrim(LTrim(@List))
-- check for final delimiter
If Right( @List, 1 ) <> @Delimiter -- append final delimiter
Select @List = @List + @Delimiter -- get position of first element
Select @iPos = Charindex( @Delimiter, @List, 1 )
While @iPos > 0
Begin
-- get item
Select @item = LTrim( RTrim( Substring( @List, 1, @iPos -1 ) ) )
If @@ERROR <> 0 Break -- remove item form list
Select @List = Substring( @List, @iPos + 1, Len(@List) - @iPos + 1 )
If @@ERROR <> 0 Break -- insert item
Insert @Temp1 Values( @item ) If @@ERROR <> 0 Break
-- get position pf next item
Select @iPos = Charindex( @Delimiter, @List, 1 )
If @@ERROR <> 0 Break
End
Return
End
FYI: I'm getting @List value from a table and passing it as a string to split function.
Any help would be appreciated!
