Merci!

  • How do I change permissions for the documents and files on my Mac Book Pro after I re-instaalled the HD using a Time Machine back-up?

I had to re-install the HD on my Mac Book Pro. I used a Time Machine back-up for all the apps and files. Most were restored, However, I cannot unlock a number of them. I tried changing the permissions using Get info but it is not working. I am using the latest version of Moutain Lion OSX.

Very helpful suggestion and response, Thanks for pointing out that it is a permission issue. I am working through the issue and resolving my problem.

Hello Teddy53149 and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
    Follow this procedure:

As they recommend and as always when you're messing with administrator accounts back everything up first.

  • Do I need to change any settings to connect my mac book pro to my tv?

Do I need to change any settings on my mac book pro to connect to my tv

Almost certainly, yes. Did you want to know which settings?
Exactly what settings you would need to change, where, and to what would depend on many factors, including at least the following:
    * what model MBP you have (which will tell us the connector available),
    * what version of Mac OS X it runs (which will tell us the settings available),
    * what sort of TV you have (resolution, what connectors it offers, how they are switched, etc.),
    * what connecting facilities you have (like wires or an AppleTV),
    * how you want to use the TV (primary screen, secondary screen, mirror screen, sole screen),
    * whether you want to play audio through the TV,
    and even
    * where the TV is located with respect to the MBP.
Simple case: New enough MBP to have HDMI output, running a recent OS X, TV new enough to have an available HDMI input, an HDMI cable on hand, using the TV as a secondary screen, and you don't care about how the screen positions relate or where the audio plays. You might be able to get away with default settings on the computer, but you'll still probably have to switch the TV to the HDMI input, and you'll have to drag windows onto the new screen.

My Mac Book Pro changes the saved home page each time I open Safari.  I am also getting random tabs opening with various "cleaning up" my computer junk.
How do I get rid of this?  I tried some of the fixes listed but they don't seem to work or I am doing something wrong.

You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

As it says, I got a Mac Book Pro from my company and I would like to update the apps on it.  They are registered to a former employee's Apple ID, is there anyway for me to change it to my Apple ID?  Or do all of the Apps need to be re-purchased?

  • Mac Book Pro - Mac Mini; sharing stopped working after IP/Net change

I apologize in advance for the length of this, I've got a complex issue that I've been unable to diagnose with the usual published notes...
I have a Mac Book Pro and Mac Mini. I previously had sharing and screen sharing working between both systems.
About a month ago I switched internet providers (to AT&T U-verse) and their router required me to make major changes to my internal network as listed below.
Since those changes the Mac Book Pro can not access the Mac Mini in any way via Finder options, but still shows it in Finder->Sharing. I can access the Mini via shell access (telnet/ssh, ftp, www) but nothing via the normal automatic Bonjour type accesses (file sharing, screen sharing).
Conversely, the Mac Mini has no difficulty accessing the Mac Book Pro in any way.
List of the significant changes that were made:
    1) My main router was replaced by the AT&T router.
    2) The AT&T router does not allow any fixed IP addresses within the network, requiring all of my network shemes to get re-done (I used a mix of fixed and DHCP previously).
    3) The IP range changed for all computers due to the router.
    4) Both Mac Mini and Mac Book Pro were and still are on DHCP.
    5) The Mac Mini's wireless was disabled and it was plugged directly in to the Ethernet port on the main router.
The behavior of the system is as if the Mac Book Pro is locked on the old IP address (but only in the context of the Bonjour services). Although I can't prove this, there was a brief period where both the old and new router and ethernet and plugged connections were all active on the same network and during this period the Mac Book Pro accessed the Mini without difficulty (the old IP was bound to the wireless port on the Mini).
Unfortunately it wasn't until after I had exchanged this other router that I realized that things were not working correctly.
Another unusual clue, the Sharing used to say use afp://<mininame> to access from Windows and now it says afp://QVT_529. I have to assume this is something to do with the DHCP from the AT&T router but all of the AT&T system screens show the <mininame> properly bound to the active DHCP port and nothing hinting at what the QVT_529 references. Going to this address fails and I can't ping it from terminal.
I've been scouring the net for the last month trying different things with absolutely zero results on any front. All settings check out perfectly. No firewall changes were made. No evidence that anything is out of place.
However, I can still only connect in one direction. It just doesn't make sense.
Some things I don't know that I think might help me resolve the issue:
    1) Any recommendations with how I might be able to get a better view of what Mac Book Pro might be trying to connect to via the Finder->Sharing link to the computer?
    2) Any way to probe the Mac Mini's file or screen sharing features from the terminal (going around the Finder link)?
    3) Any possible issues with local networks that might interfere with these services? (there are several switches/hubs between and other devices on the network, but everything checks out at the IP flow level)
    Thanks in advance,
    Barney

This is just a stab in the dark since I haven't run into this and I don't know all the steps you have taken (or researched.)
It seems to me that since it is working right from the mini->MB Pro, then the problem should reside on the mini's broadcast side or the mini's OSX firewall. If your firewall is set correctly (as you said), my guess would be that network or firewall preferences have been corrupted by combining multiple, conflicting settings for the same preference due to hardware changes. If I was experiencing this (assuming that every setting on the routers/switches and the firewalls (router/OSX) etc were 100% correct), I would create a new user account and verify that the problem is still manifesting itself. If this solves the problem, I know it is the user account that is messed up and not the OS. If this doesn't solve the problem, I turn off any sharing services, delete the resident Locations (by the drop-down menu in the Network System Preference) as well as the list of Connections (left pane of Network SP) and restart the machine. I then set-up new network, sharing services and firewall settings after the restart. This has solved all of my network sharing issues on my equipment, home and work. (Permissions not with-standing.) If this hasn't solved my problem, my next step would be to reset NVRAM, PRAM and clean system caches (using OnyX.) Reinstall of OSX commences then. I don't know enough of UNIX to be comfortable in terminal so if my steps above failed, I would be coming here to ask or, if I thought the problem resided on non-Apple hardware, the offending hardware support channels.
I don't know if this helps, but I hope so.
    D.

I made a big mistake to change the setting of my Mac book pro to "me only". Now ofcourse It cannot open the login page, for how would the mac know it is me? How can I change the setting back to "everyone"? I have back up in the past but the last month I have not. I really want to keep the data.
So how can I go in and change the setting, It stays ofcourse at the apple screen with wheel. All info is there and the computer works fine, just cannot use it or have been able to log in.

wjosten is spot on.  If you really want iCloud, then you will need to acquire a new or second hand MBP that can run Lion.
    Ciao.

Why not upgrade to Snow Leopard, if you can?
NO. There is no way to downgrade your iPhone OS back to iOS6. Apple makes downgrades of their mobile OS not possible.
If you can, the only thing you can do is upgrade your Mac's OS X operating system.

The 2009's didn't support sound on HDMI. That came in 2010. Are you sure it ever worked?

I I forgot to write down my chosen administrator password as I went trough the set up process on my new Mac book pro retina 15 inch.
I put the machine to sleep, and now I can not access my own machine.
I made a passwordhint, but having tried some 30-40 word combinations I still haven´t hit the right.
How can I access the machine to make a new password? Since the new Retina models don´t come with an external software CD, I feel pretty lost.
