Encoding H.264 for flash

I'm new to flash, but want to use it's ability to play H.264
quicktimes I'm used to using for other web video. I know I have
certain audio codecs I must use, but is there a data rate limit as
well. My files are 640x360, 24 fps.
I will be offering the files in a Wordpress player for the
web.
I'm assuming I can use Quicktime Pro or Compressor to make
the files.

When worrying about bandwidth, yes there is. If you're
bandwidth can't support the throughput, then your videos will
playback choppy or have to pause so the download will catch
up.

  • Encoding H.264 for iPod

    There was some discussion here some time ago http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1107049 about generating iPod videos outside QuickTime. The conclusion, if I recall correctly, was that:
    a) this was possible provided that one used MPEG-4 codec. There are several utilities that can do it for you.
    b) that no solution existed for H.264 encoded media.

    Note that this isn't a simple one step process. You need to first generate H.264 encoded media in mp4 enclosure which is a one step process in QTP. Compressor will not encode H.264 media in mp4 enclosure, H.264 in mov is the only option. However you can take the Compressor H.264/mov output and repackage it to the required H.264/mp4 in QTP (fast and easy). The final step in both cases is to use mp42ipod shell tool to generate iPod compatible m4v file.

    I'd like to report that our problem has been solved! What I had not seen before was the setting in QT to use the "Baseline" setting. That made all the difference.
    For others, the setting can only be found by doing the following:
    Use the Movie to MPEG-4 setting
    File format: MP4
    Video format: H.264
    This will give a "Video Option" button. Change to "Baseline"
    That's the key. After that, any settings can be used, such as data rate, frame rate, etc.
    Here's what I now use:
    (Under the Video Options button) Restrict Profile to Baseline
    Encoding mode: Best quality (multi-pass)
    Video format: H.264
    Data rate: 75 kbps
    Optimized for download
    Image size 320x240 QVGA
    Frame Rate: 15fps
    Key frame automatic
    Audio: AAC-LC
    Data rate: 48
    Channels: Mono
    Output Sample rate: 44.100
    Encoding Quality: Best

  • Encoding H.264 for DVD

    I'm exporting raw DSLR footage (H.264, MOV files 1920x1080, 29fps), which has been edited as a 5 minute "film" sequence. I'm going to use Encore CS6 to create a DVD. What is the best Mbps setting for this? When I select HD 1080p, 29 fps, it shows the Mbps relatively high (32 to 40), but when I select any of the DVD (standard def) settings, it is below 8 Mbps, and when I select Blu-Ray, it is around 15 Mbps. It's my understanding that DVDs can only handle around 9Mbps, and that Encore will downgrade the sequence(s) because of this. Should I bother wasting time encoding at the higher rates? Some people on the forums have suggested encoding as high as 50 Mbps. I just need some guidance. When I send these projects to Disc Makers for pressing, I want to send the best quality product that I can.

    In versions of Premiere Pro/Adobe Media Encoder since CS6, you can use the "scale to fill" crop setting to handle the small black bars that appear if you scale down HD to SD without any cropping.
    Export from PR/AME as MPEG2-DVD at the highest bitrate your project allows - under the DVD spec limits. Since you are pressing, not burning, you can afford the highest rates. Only 5 minutes, just use CBR (constant bitrate) rather than variable.

  • Encoding H.264 for the web

    Hello everyone
    I have a Sanyo Xacti handycam camcorder that records 1920x1080 60 progressive MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 files on SD cards. Lately I used Premiere CS4 to edit a few interviews with my PC (an Intel QuadCore Q9300, 2500 MHz - 7.5 x 333 with XP Pro 32bit, 4GBs of DDR3 RAM at 1.333 MHz and 2 different internal WD destination drives, each 750 GBs of storage - individual , no RAID - both running at 7,200 rpm). I added the relative PPro sequence to Media Encoder CS4 and from the dropdown menu I chose "H.264 > YouTube HD Widescreen", not messing with the settings for this preset. As it turned out, encoding for 1 minute of the above native footage takes... 17 minutes to complete! Is this normal for my hardware? Any suggestions?

    Wow! A piece of equipment purchased no more than 2-3 years ago is 12 times slower than top performers? I'm guessing by "top performers" you're referring to 8-core Xeon Macs, right?... I was hoping it would only be like 4 or 5 times slower. But obviously technology has passed me by... :-) So, how much faster do you think the encoding procedure would be with an i7 extreme edition?

  • Problem encoding H.264 for iPod Touch

    I've made several attempts at encoding files to play on my iPod Touch, 2nd generation.  The most recent attempt: I took an existing mp4 and edited it in Premiere CS4.  After failing to get files encoded through Adobe Media Encoder to play on my Touch, I was very careful to follow the tech specs listed on Apple's website.  I got audio, but no video.  Same as all the other times.  This time I ended up encoding it as a FLV video and then encoded that as a mp4 using other software.
    Does anyone know the proper settings or why this is happening?

    Go to levels and double check that I think by defualt its set too high, Its under the advance section.. I had to turn mine down to 13 for ipod classic

  • Hardware Encoder for H.264?  Encoder for Flash?  Render Farm?

    I use Compressor to create H.264 QuickTime files, and have setup Qmaster to use a 8 core cluster to expedite the process, but it is not reliable, and fails quite often. I have a total of 3 Mac Pros in my facility which can all share their resources to help this process be quicker. I was wondering if anyone knew of a hardware encoder that will encode H.264 files very quickly? I have a bid on a project that if granted, I will need to encode a VAST amount of H.264 QuickTime files. Is the best solution a dedicated Mac Pro render farm with a Qmaster setup?
    Next, on to the Flash. I currently use Sorenson Squeeze 5 to encode 2 pass VBR flash files, and it takes forever even on my 2.8ghz Octo with 10gb of RAM. Does anyone know of a piece of software or hardware that can expedite this process? Maybe a Flash render farm? Maybe a gnome with a wand?

    Keep your eyes open for when the Matrox CompressHD goes on sale.
    While it probably won't be available to use on the job you've just bid on (tentative sale date is May 2009 but who knows if that can be trusted), it otherwise seems like the answer your prayers - it speeds up h.264 and Flash encoding. It will, supposedly, list for $495.
    Otherwise, as mentioned, the Turbo264HD is the way to go for now.

  • Encode DV to H.264 for iPod with Quicktime Pro - iPod won't play file

    Hello,
    I have been trying to encode Microsoft DV or Pinnacle DV AVIs into MPEG4 (H.264) for iPod, BUT the resulting files do NOT play in an iPod!?
    I use Quicktime Pro for Windows (v7.1) and use the Apple recommended settings, here are the exact settings I have tried and failed in an iPod;
    VIDEO: H.264 at 200kbps, Baseline Profile, 25fps, Auto Key Frames, 320x240 or 640x480, Multipass Best quality encoding.
    AUDIO: AAC Audio at 96kbps, 24kHz sampling freq, Stereo.
    I'm actually doing it for a client and they cannot play the file, they apparently have to 'convert' my file in their MAC based iTunes for it to work.
    Anyhow can anyone please give me an idea if I am doing something wrong?

    In that one there were two errors: needed a higher version of Flash installed and the codec issue. As you mentioned this had been narrowed down to the codec of the mp4 file.   • H.264 for Blu-Ray Encoding Time

    Hi All,
    I have exported a Pro-Res 1080p 2 hour film from FCPX and just dropped it into compressor. I have then dragged the default H.264 for Blu-Ray settings on my video and it looks like it will take way over three hours. I have a friend running Media Encoder and with the same file on his laptop it does it in 40min and it's a slower spec . I am running Compressor  4.1.3 and the latest MAC OS operating system. I have enabled additional instanced checked and the number 1 in the drop down (there are no other numbers)
    Is there anything I am doing wrong, surely it can't be this slow, it's not even set to multipass.

  • Can't convert MP4 to .fLV for flash using encoder CC 2014

    Seriously adobe, I wish I never upgraded to CC, it's been a nightmare.
    I need to convert an MP4 to an .flv for flash pro CC. Encoder CC no longer supports this, which is UNBELIEVABLE....
    I use a third party vendor for video in flash banner advertising and it only supports .flv files.
    Can someone tell me what other programs allow me to so the MP4 to FLV conversion?

  • Encoding in H.264 for You Tube

    I am trying to export from CS3 (Adobe Media Encoder) to h.264 (for You Tube).
    Setup: Video at 30fps 640 x 480, audio at 192Kbps, 44.1, Stereo.  Video.
    While  the output (video) is crispy clear - much clearer than what I got with WME (producing a WMV), the audio/video are out of sync (nearly half a second).  I do not have this with other formats.
    I also tried video at 29.97 fps but it does not help.
    Any suggestions ?

    Yes, 768 is the total number, so your video or video+audio have to fall below 768.

  • Encoding iMovie files for Windows Media Player

    iMovie 11 / 9.0
    Mac OS 10.6.8
    I edit audio/video in iMovie (currently the only program I have) and need to output for streaming on the internet. Most of our subscribers are using older versions of Windows Media Player and as I understand won't be able to play MP4. I couldn't play the MP4 using Windows Media Player 9.0, "invalid format" error.
    What software could I use to convert MP4 to a format for streaming on the internet that our subscribers play using WMP? Should I save the file out of iMovie in a different format to convert?
    I have Adobe Media Encoder 4.2.0.006 but my options are h.264 or flash, got error messages when I tried to "Edit Export Settings".

    The easiest way is to upload video to YouTube and embed videos on your site from there. This way you don't have to worry about which version of Windows, which version of Internet Exlorere, etc.
    Another way, ask your users to install QuickTime For Windows. Then export normally,
    Another way, get one of the paid versions of Flip4Mac, and you can convert files to wmv using QuickTime Pro or MPEG Streamclip or Compressor.

  • From AVI to FLV for Flash MX Professional 2004

    This is my issue, I had this Flash MX 2004 Professional when I bought my PC, since then , 6 years ago, I learned how to use it, and recently got a little proyect which turned out to be something very professional, I developed some SWF files at 30fps and recorded them using Camtasia Studio at 40fps, then I created an AVI video file of 400MB +-, I want that those AVIs inside an SWF with my own VIDEO PLAYER, the one me myself developed, play, paused buttons, progressBar, time, etc. Problem is, these AVI files are much too big, I think, for my Flash MX 2004 Professional, they last 1hour 30min.  I cannot upgrade to a modern version of Flash ever since, I have no time to do it, the proyect is already somehow delayed, and almost everything is already done in Flash MX 2004 Professional, I have no ways to convert my AVI files into FLA files, or how place those 1hour-30min AVI files in my SWF, ever since I need those videos besides some other SWF files which I will use to lounch a product will must run just as it it were a DVD, it has its own menu, from the user may select the video they want to see, when they select one, a new window must pop-up with my video and my controlers in it.
    Would you recommend me some programs that may convert my heavy AVI files into more readable FLA files, my Flash MX 2004 Professional does not do it properly... I have no idea why...
    Please I appreciate your advice ever since I just learned everything as I developed my SWF and other files.

    The options actually match those of the most recent iPod Video, which uses H.264 video, up to 1.5Mbps, 640 x 480 pixels, and 30 frames per second with low-complexity AAC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz stereo audio. On the lower end, bandwidths up to 768Kbps, 320 x 240 pixels, and 30 frames per second are also used, known as Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3. Both options can be output with .m4v, .mp4, or .mov extensions.
    iTunes. The simplest way is to use iTunes built-in converter. Apple makes it fairly simple to convert videos to play on the Apple TV or iPod, which are also conversions that can be used on the iPhone. Any video that can play in iTunes, then, can be converted to play on the iPhone, and local files can also be synced directly to the iPhone via iTunes sync conduit, making for a fairly easy process. Two downsides: first, iTunes uses a "lowest common denominator" approach, meaning that there are no customized options for encoding into H.264.     Browser Support for HTML5
    First, let’s deal with some very basic stuff, like where this will work and where it won’t. As you can see in the table below, only the latest versions of most browsers support native video playback using HTML5’s <video> tag.

    Since Firefox 3.0 and IE 7 & 8 lack any support for HTML5 video, you’ll have to come up with a fallback plan for serving video to those users. Depending on what you want to do you, could fallback first to Quicktime and then, failing that, to Flash. That’s the strategy used in Video for Everyone (note that as of v0.4, Video for everyone no longer falls back to QuickTime).
    To keep things simple we’re just going to fall straight from HTML5 to Flash.
    Formats, Codecs and Technicalities
    The next thing you need to understand is what is actually happening when you load and play a video file in your web browser. You’re probably used to thinking of video as .mp4 or .mov files, but unfortunately it’s not that simple. The actual file formats are just containers. Think of them as a bit like a .zip file — they hold other stuff inside.
    Each container holds at minimum one video track and, most likely, one audio track. When you watch a movie online, your video player (most likely Flash) decodes both the audio and video and sends the information to your screen and speakers.
    Why does this matter? Well, because the process of decoding what’s inside the video container file varies. To know how to decode a movie, the player (which is your web browser in the case of HTML5 video) has to know which codec the movie was encoded with.
    When it comes to web video there are two codecs to worry about: H.264 and Theora.
    There’s a huge debate right now among web developers, browser makers and just about everyone else as to which codec is right for the web. We believe that a free, open codec without patent and licensing restrictions is the best solution for the web. Sadly, neither codec exactly fulfills that dream, so for now, let’s just skip the whole argument and be practical — we’re going to use both codecs.
    Why? Well, have a look at the table below, which shows which codecs work where and you’ll quickly see that there is no one-size-fits-all-browsers solution. Only Google Chrome can play both H.264 and Theora.

    So, you may be thinking … if HTML5 video doesn’t work in IE7 or IE8 and it means I’m going to have to encode my videos twice, then why bother at all? Well, the best answer is simple: mobile users. If you want iPhone and Android users to be able to see your video, HTML5 is the only way to do it — Flash support is coming to Android sooner or later but for now HTML5 is the only option, and we all know Flash doesn’t run on the iPhone or the iPad.
    The HTML5 Code
    Here’s how to actually embed your videos. First, we encode video in both .ogv and .mp4 containers. Encoding video is beyond the scope of this article, so instead we suggest you check out Mark Pilgrim’s online book Dive Into HTML5, which has a whole chapter devoted to understanding video encoding. Pilgrim’s encoding suggestions use free software to get the job done, and in the end you’ll have two files — one .mp4 and one .ogv.
    Now it’s time to unleash those movies in pure HTML glory. Here’s the code:

    Yes, that’s it. What we’ve done here is use the <video> tag to specify the dimensions of our video, and to denote that we want to use the browser’s default controls. Then, within the video tag, we’ve added two <source> elements which link to our video files.
    The “type” attribute of the <source> tag helps the browser understand which file it should load. It’s a bit of an ugly chunk of code that needs to specify the container format, the video codec and the audio codec.
    In this case we’ve assumed standard .ogv and baseline encoded H.264 video as per Pilgrim’s tutorial. See the WHATWG wiki for more information on which video types you can specify.
    And there you have it — native web video, no plugins required.
    Dealing With Everyone Else
    What about IE7, IE8 and older versions of just about any other browser? Well, for those users, we’ll fall back on Flash. To do that, we just use an <embed> tag within our video tag:

    Now any browser that doesn’t understand the HTML5 video tag will just continue on its way until it hits the object tag, which it should understand (note that the order, mp4 before ogv, is important for iPad support — Apple requires that mp4 be the first video file).
    Of course for this to work you need a Flash video container. JW Player is one popular example, or you can roll your own using Adobe’s tools. Also remember that we still haven’t handled the case of an older version of Firefox with no Flash plugin installed (maybe your users are surfing your tubes with an outdated Linux machine). You can always add good old text-based links to the video files as a catch-all fix for anyone who can’t, for whatever reason, see either the HTML5 or Flash versions.
    Conclusion
    Embedding HTML5 video isn’t significantly more difficult than using Flash, especially if you’ve been using H.264 video files in your Flash player — which is exactly what YouTube has done with its HTML5 beta.
    While we’re concerned about the licensing and patent requirements of H.264, it isn’t hard to notice that if you skip Theora and make all non-H.264 fall back to Flash, you’ve still saved yourself a considerable encoding headache. In fact, that’s probably the best practical argument against Mozilla and Opera’s refusal to support H.264.
    If you’d like to use some of the more advanced aspects of HTML5 video, be sure to check the SublimeVideo player, which offers very nice JavaScript-powered set of custom controls. Also be sure to have a look at Video for Everybody, which makes for more complex code but handles just about every use case you could imagine. And there’s a handy Video for Everybody WordPress plugin as well.

  • Encode movie clips for use in PDF presentation?

    I've tried several formats for use in PDF.
    FLV, F4V and H.264. But i always experience massive lag in Full Screen Mode. Even when I encode with low rate settings.
    Any best practises?

    Those are the only formats supported in Rich Media Annotations. Within the Acrobat Family they render using Flash Player, so the performance should be similar to a full-screen display of the same video from another source (e.g. on a website).
    What do you mean by 'massive lag'? Are the audio and video tracks out of sync, is the playback slow or buffering? You must expect an initial delay when the RMA activates, as the video file must be decompressed from the PDF file's data stream and transferred to memory for Flash Player to open. That can take anything up to three seconds depending on the hardware and size of the stream.

  • How to find encoding info of a Flash video (.flv) file?

    Is it possible to find out the encoding information, such as
    video and audio data rates, frame rate, codec used, etc, of a Flash
    video clip? If so, how? What tool/software I need to do this?
    I am able to find these (encoding) info for video clips if
    they are in Window Media or Real Media file formats. But I am not
    sure, whether there is way to find these info for Flash video clips
    as well.
    For example, we chose Flash Video format for one of our Web
    sites. Someone at work originally encoded a video clip for the site
    at nearly 900kbps (total data rate: video + audio). I asked it to
    be reduced to around 300kbps. Well, he resized the video and
    encoded the same clip at a lower data rate, but doesn't remember
    exactly what setting he used. Now, how do I find out the key
    information about encoding for this clip (i.e. data rate, fps,
    etc)?

    in windows we would right click and select 'properties' right?
    on apple you simply hold control 'ctrl' and then click on the folder you want, the control and click is macs equivanlent to windows' right click
    after you've 'ctrl' and clicked, select 'get info', get used to this 'get info' function as you'll probably use it alot, like i said, its like selecting 'properties' on windows
    another way of doing the control>click is clicking once on an item so that it is highlighted and then selecting 'file' at the top of your screen and then 'get info' too
    to view all pics in a slideshow yo simply highlight each one, or you can select multiple items by holding down the command key (⌘) then single clicking each pic you want to view, this selects it and then double clicking any one of them when they are all highlighted, in mac you will use the 'preivew' application which is an image viewer, sort of the replacement for your old 'windows fax and image viewer' on windows

  • H.264 for iPad, problems in CS5 - OK in CS3 (Mac)

    Hi all,
    I have a CS3 project built on a PC, I've just brought into CS5 on a Mac. The encoding setup is for iPad, running full screen: H.264, 25fps, 1024x768, with a keyframe every 5 frames. I'm using the same setting as the CS3 project.
    All movies out of CS3 are reported by Quicktime to be 25fps. However movies out of CS5 are reported to be 25.33fps. In addition the results look blurry and generally poor compared to CS3 for the same file size. Anyone have any advice or experiencing similar issues?
    Mostly I need to ensure it comes out at 25fps as the engine/code base require 25fps with a key frame every 5 frames for movies to work correctly in App (as it has been doing with CS3 exports).

    Premiere reports - 25 FPS
    Would you say this means I am actually getting 25fps?
    Without having much scientific evidence to go on, I would have to say "yes." Since software playback is not strictly timed the way, say, a professional video tape playback would be, there is bound to be some variability in how that file actually gets played back. It will vary based on the host computer, the file, and the player used. Ultimately, though, it's the way the file is encoded that matters, and I believe that the file actually is 25fps as you've specified.
    The most important question is: have you tried one of these CS5 exports in your destination application to see if everything works correctly? If they do, I don't think you have to worry about too much more; after all, based on your description, the most important factor is that you have keyframes encoded into the video stream for navigation/cueing. If this works, the playback framerate should be largely irrelevant, at least in how it is reported in a host of different playback applications.
    I am still wondering about the Data Rate, appearing (in QT) to be below the range listed in the Encoder settings.Using variable between 4 - 8Mbps yet the output is reported as:
    QT 7 - 3837.74 kbits/s
    Premiere is says Average Data Rate: 463 KB / second
    Changing to CBR with 5 Mb/s
    QT 7 reports - 25.07 FPS (playing FPS: 25) - 4128.64 kbits/s
    Premiere reports - 25 FPD - Average Data Rate: 498 KB / second
    There is bound to be some variation between the data rates of two files encoded even with the same encoding parameters, particularly when you're using VBR (variable bit rate) encoding. The amount of used bits will vary throughout the course of an encoded video stream, as some portions will require more bits to encode cleanly, while others can be compressed much more efficiently and therefore use fewer available bits. A busier video will require more of the available bits than one with less action. This would account for variations in data rate between two files using the same encoding settings.
    Now, if you are talking about the difference between what QT7 and Premiere report as far as data rate is concerned--that's simply a reporting issue. QT7 is using kbits/s, or "kilobits per second," whereas Premiere is being far less precise with kBps, or "kilobytes per second." One kilobyte per second (1 kBps) is roughly equal to eight kilobits per second (8 kbps), so if you multiply one the Premiere-reported data rates by 8, you get the QT7 rate.
    For example: 8 kilobits x 463 kBps = 3704 kbps; fairly similar to what QT7 reported.
    Why the difference? Well, one may be factoring in audio bitrate as well as video bitrate, or the Premiere reported data rate is less precise, or maybe just the fact that binary math is a little more involved than simple straightforward calculations In any event, they're both "right;" it just depends how accurate you need to be.
    Is Premiere the best place to check for data rates and FPS? Could do with one reliable source
    My recommendation would be MediaInfo; it's available for many platforms, including Mac, and gives a great deal of information about any particular file.
