Encoding question.

I am reading the value 'Shkod�r County' from the database, and using javascript to populate a combobox. The combobox displays
'Sckod? County'.
However if i am harcoding the string i am getting the right value.
Can anyone please suggest me the right way to do the above?

What you have to determine is where the character translation failure is occurring. In db->java, jsp->html, or javascript->combo box
Thats at least three potential places for it to fail.
What do you mean by "hardcoding the string"? Hardcoding it into the javascript, or directly into the control?
What do you see when you view source on the generated JSP page?
Can you show a small example jsp?
Most probably you need to encode the correct content-type/page-encoding on the JSP.

H1 footage & premiere deinterlace encoder questions.

Hi all,
I recorded some footage on a H1 in 60i HD (HDV). Used Premiere CS3 preset HDV 1080i 30 (60i) to capture it.
Capture question...
1. Should i buy cineform aspect or prospect HD to convert it before editing in premiere CS3?
Adobe media encoder questions...
2. Should i deinterlace the footage first by selecting "Deinterlace" in the from the output tab?
I was reading some adobe livedocs info that its a good idea to do so, even though canon says their 60i, 30f, 24f is as good as progressive.
3. should i choose "HDTV 1080i 29.97 High Quality" or "1440 x1080i 29.97 High Quality"?
The H1 captured output from tape is 1440x1080i. The encoder HDTV preset outputs 1920x1080, the other preset obviously outputs 1440x1080.

1. I use Cineform with great results and would indeed convert it to cineform BEFORE editing. It converts the 4:2:0 colorspace to 4:2:2 and is better to edit with, along with the fact it also coverts long GOP to almost a frame based compressin.
2. Cineforms method of "deinterlaceing" is different than Adobe's.
I have tried both. It seems that Cineforms is better. There is a LONG post under HDV to SD conversion. Read it.
But, it seems to me that if you keep it interlaced, motion seems smoother and more natural.
Adam Wilt did a good review of the HL and stated that the "F" frames are really progressive frames made from interlaced CCD's. The frames do lose a little vertical resolution.
I would either shoot in F and keep it there, or shoot in I and keep it there.

Let's look at the 1-pass vs 2-pass Encoding.
When one sets the general parameters for Encoding and chooses 1-pass, the parameters are applied over the entire Timeline. This is the quickest method for Encoding and will be pretty good, based on the chosen parameters.
With 2-pass, the Encoding program will first look at the footage, in the scheme of the chosen parameters, but while doing so, will look for faster motion (both camera and subject) in the Timeline. Where it finds the motion, it will mark it for the highest setting in the parameters. The highest settings will be applied to the sections with the most motion, and the "average" will be applied to the rest. This yields a better Encoded file, especially where there is motion. This Encoding method takes longer, as the Encoder must look at all of the footage first to decide what to do, and then to apply the Encoding parameters.
The Encoders used by Hollywood, are usually at least 9-pass, and often quite a bit more. They are also run by experts, who do nothing but Encode all day, and are highly-paid for their work and their expertise. This is why the high motion footage in a commercial DVD will look smoother, than what we can accomplish, and the file will likely even be smaller. Those Encoding programs cost hundreds of thousands of $, so it's not like we could download one and use it, even if we were experts and could figure out the settings.
So to wrap up, a good Encoding engine will likely do a fair job when set to 1-pass, but especially with higher motion footage, likely a better job with 2-pass, and the only cost is time. Unless I am trying to Encode a quick reference file, I will always use multi-pass schemes, to get the best possible output, and just have a cup, or two, of coffee, while I wait. Also, there are better Encoders, than the ones included in our NLE's and authoring programs. Grass Valley's ProCoder is one that gets really high marks - this side of Hollywood.

File encoding question

Just attempting to open some file and read it to screen with BufferedReader and no encoding is handled anywhere...
I tried to save an html file to .txt and just use that as a test file, but yeah encoding was different from ???(the standard encoding I guess) and stopped at some point in the text file.
I did open notepad2 and say under encoding to be ANSI, read a bit on the forums and see UTF-16 mentioned a bit as well... So my question is just what type of encoding is a normal standard text file?

Highest quality Blu-ray disc encoding question ...

I did a bit of searching on old posts, but still wasn't clear on the answer. My source footage is 1280x720, 59.94p and came from a Contour+ helmet camera where the files are stored in a .mov file with H.264 encoding.   My video is only 9 minutes long.   What is the best method to produce the highest quality single layer BD out of PP and Encore in this case?
One response I can envision is that isn't going to matter in this case given the camera/source. Otherwise, would one be better off using Adobe Dynamic Link and letting Encore choose the settings or selecting the format/preset and tweaking the video settings in PP and importing the resultant files into Encore?
If PP, I have seen some posts saying MPEG2 Blu-ray will produce a better result if the bit rate is cranked up high. But then others imply H.264 will likely come out better.   I also noticed that the H.264 video settings allow increasing the bit rate there as well.
I will have a question on video settings depending on the answer above.

Thanks Ann. Everyone else confer or do we have any MPEG2 advocates?   Assuming H.264, what video settings would you change from the default beyond the frame dimensions and frame rate? I'm a layman/consumer, but at a glance I thought perhaps "VBR, 2-pass" would have merit as I thought I read somehwere that produces a better result (encoding time doesn't matter for me).    What about increasing the Target and Maximum Bitrate sliders all the way to the right (my video is short)? What about the Render at Maximum Quality check box (I'm still confused on that one and when to use it)?

Idoc inbound error - encoding question

   I create a File Ports(WE21) : Non-unicode format and Checked 'Continue Despite Conversion Error'.
   The partner send to us a file with ASCII-encoding including German NÄHER .
   In WE02, I found the line with German NÄHER disordered. ÄH became char 腍，but I have set 'Continue Despite Conversion Error'.

this is not a conversion error.
The file contains Latin-1 data with the special character "Ä".
Now I assume you use as logon language in the Unicode system ZH (or another Asian language) ... ?
Then the system evaluates SY-LANGU and converts the Non-Unicode file based on the Asian code page.
Then ÄH will be interpreted as 腍. Hence the system gets a word with 4 characters instead of 5.
This can lead to shiftings in the whole idoc and the idoc might be invalid.
Therefore I would propose to upload the idoc using logon language EN or change it via "setlocale " in abap code.

H.264 encoder question

For my streaming application I need H.264 video content with sliced frames and H.264 slice size should be configurable. I tried QT Pro and found that it partitions a frame into 2 halves. Is it possible to configure the encoder to produce more slices?

You answered my question in #2. I am not sure I understand how services such as ustream.TV can webcast in H.264/MP4? Since smartphones can send the stream only in FLV/H.263; Do they re-encode the livestreams from H.263 -> H.264 at the server using FlashMediaEncoder?
Another question: lets say if I can somehow encode the video myself (H.264) at client side in realtime; can I publish it to FMS as MP4/H.264?

Alpha Channel / Media Encoder Question

Hello All,
I have a question that I think is just something I'm overlooking. I have a Comp with a logo. The logo is made up of various files and does not have a solid background. It's very similar to a lower third.When I render it out in AE via the Render Que I have no issues and the Alpha channel works as expected when imported into PPRO. The setting I use is QuickTime>Animation>RGB+Alpha, etc.
This morning I decided I wanted to start rendering via Media Encoder. I watched the video Colin Smith did a bout a year ago to refresh my memory.
I fired up Media Encoder, dragged my logo comp into ME and everything seemed to being going beautifully. I chose QuickTime> Animation codec>etc.
However when imported the file into PPRO the Alpha channel did not render. Where the Alpha channel is supposed to be PPRO read as black video. I went back in ME and doubled checked all of the settings. I do not see anywhere in ME where you can specify an Alpha channel as you can in AE where you can specify "RGB+Alpha".
Is there a setting in ME to activate/read the alpha channel that I'm missing? I'd really like to use ME for future AE comp renderings but unless I can get around the Alpha channel issue I won't be able to.
CS6 all up to date
Win Vista (not that I think any system specs matter in this instance).

From AME, add the file to the render queue and click either the codec or preset to open the After Effects export settings. Under Basic Video Settings selecting a Depth of 32 bit will enable the alpha channel. If using a 10-bit or greater codec, set the Depth to 64 bit.
As an aside, have you considered creating a Dynamic Link from Premiere Pro to the After Effects file? It eliminates the need for an intermediate file and allows you to maintain a bit depth up to 32bpc.

Premiere Pro CS3 Media Encoder question...

Hi,
I got a question regarding the Premiere Pro CS3 Media Encoder.
I am converting a sequence in Premiere Pro CS3 which contains footage from a '.vob' file which is NTSC, 720x480, 16:9 to a '.flv' file.
Now I'm doing this via Premiere Pro CS3 Media Encoder and it let's me choose the Width & Height but there is no checkbox to keep the proportions - which I find is very, very inconvenient...
So if I wanna convert this to a .flv file which is 400 high, the width should be 600, right ?
Also, there is no way to specify to keep the 16:9 aspect ratio.
Is that done automatically or how/where can I specify it ?

If you want 16:9. you need to consider that the lower number should probably be divisible by 72. So, if you want something about 600 wide, I would use 360 for the lower number which gives you a frame size of 640X360
When divisible by 72, it is evenly divisible by both 8, which is great for encoders, and 9, which is the frame ratio you want.
Just choose square pixels and you will be fine.

Cs4 media encoder question

Hello all....I have been holding off upgrading to CS4 production premium from my CS3 suite....mainly as I really am not sure what the benefits would be for my particular workflow.....but one question I need answered is this....I currently use Procoder 3 for all of my encoding needs and am extremely pleased with the results....would upgrading to CS4 make Procoder redundant? or can I bypass the AME (which sounds extremely buggy)any feedback is much appreciated

I have similar concerns about switching over to PP CS4--though I find many of its features enticing.
Obviously, any workaround will cost time and workflow effectiveness. I certainly do not care for the stranglehold they have given AME. That was not a smart design move IMO, and certainly not a smart marketing decision, especially given the level of complaints about AME's slowness and quality issues with some formats. It IS a separate application--so where is the necessity in making it required for PP export.
I presume one could edit/render in a given standard format, run a batch through AME while doing other work in PP, and then batch the the lot through procoder 3 to final format while continuing editing. I may give that a try with the trial version just to judge what the workflow costs are. It would take a lot for me to give up procoder, unless I was convinced that the control and quality levels were the same or better in AME.

Flash Video Encoder Question(s)

Hello,
This is the first time we've used Flash Video Encoder. We
have a video that is about 12 minutes long that is in QuickTime
format. We have added it to the FVE queue and have two questions.
1. I think we may have messed up the settings. The first time
we tried to do this conversion we tooled around in there, but then
when we tried to go back in later we receive a message that says
"Flash Video Encoder cannot find the selected file. The file may
have been moved or deleted" when we click the Settings button.
2. It takes FOREVER to convert this video. Before we stopped
it, it had run for 25 minutes and the estimated time left was over
10 hours.
Is this normal? What on earth are we doing wrong?

Maybe that is something that got installed when I installed
Sorenson Squeeze. I am very sorry if that is the case. Try
downloading and installing the sorenson squeeze trial and see if
that helps.

Encoding question for iPhone

For some time now, we have exported our sermons for the iPod, and they work fine on iPods. But when we try to encode at a larger size for the iPhone or iPhone Touch, it doesn't work.
Export from FCE using MPEG-4, File format MP4 (not ISMA), Video Format H.264, Data Rate 60, Image Size 320 x 180 (we use 16:9), Frame Rate 15, Key Frame Automatic, Restrict Profile to Baseline, Encoding Best Quality (two pass).
Audio AAC-LC (Music), Data Rate 48, Mono, 44.100 kHz, Encoding Quality Best.
This plays on the iPod.
But doing the same thing with a data rate of 200, image size of 480 x 270, fps 29.97 the sound plays but the video does not play on the iPhone.
We don't want to use the default iPhone setting, because that gives us no control over the aspect ratio or the data rate.
Suggestions?

OK, now a slightly different question.
I thought that the iPhone was supposed to play .mov files, but when we compress the video using QT Conversion as a .mov file, the iPhone says this format is not supported. Here's what we're doing:
Export from FCE using QuickTime conversion:
Video settings: H.264, 29.97 fps, Key Frames Automatic, Restrict to 204 kbps, optimized for download, Frame reordering checked, Encoding Best Quality, size 484 x 272.
Sound settings: AAC, Mono, 44.100 kHz, Render Quality Best, VBR Constrained, 48-54, kbps.
Prepare for Internet Streaming checked, Fast Start, Compressed Header.

H.264 Encoding Questions...???

I am now starting to convert different video files to my iTunes for my AppleTV and have some questions...
BTW, I am using VisualHub and using H.264 - high quality setting for encoding on a G5 iMac with 1GB RAM.
1. Approx. how long should it take to encode a 700MB .avi file to .mp4, using H.264?
I am transferring all these TV shows I have that are around 700MB .avi files and they are taking anywhere from 400-600 minutes per file!!! That seems very long to me.
2. Do .VOB files typically take even longer to encode using H.264?
The few .VOB files I have tried are taking 800 or so minutes for a 2-3GB .vob file.
Is there something else I should be doing? Are these times normal?
Any tips or suggestions for encoding?

Don't use VisualHub myself, but do know that h.264 encoding is extremely processor intensive and time consuming. The actual source material probably won't matter too much unless it's high definition or uses a particularly computationally intensive algorithm to decode (and for most decoding is miles faster than encoding).
For example, on my iMac (2.16GHz Intel core 2 duo) converting a 2-3GB '.rec' TV recording from a Topfield PVR (which in essence produces MPEG2 transport streams), via MPEG Streamclip can take 3-4 hours for say a 90-120 minute program, and that's without using 2 pass encoding.
VisualHub is regarded as one of the faster converters, but High Quality setting will take longer than 'Standard' and the 'Go nuts' option will take even longer.
Hopefully (though it may not be what you want to hear) someone with a G5 and VisualHub will reply to confirm the sort of encoding times you're experiencing - I say hopefully as if their times are much faster it points to some other factor than VisualHub.
Elgato make a hardware USB h.264 encoder which is supposed to speed up encoding considerably but it only accelerates specific applicatiosn (eg iMovie) or their own conversion application (so far - the latest MPEG Streamclip release suggests they will add an option to harness it if possible/feasible - it may not be).
There are mixed reports on the Elgato device - biggest gripes being lack of customisable settings and an 800x600 resolution maximum. I've got one on order - for some older stuff recorded off a PVR it'll probably be more than adequate but for newer things software encoding is likely to be better. Time vs quality trade off really.
Best h.264 encoding results for most at the present time will almost certainly be achieved in customisable converter software - there are probably professional high quality h264 hardware converters available but these would be prohibitively costly for most of us.

Simple Encoding Question

First of all I apologize for the rookie nature of this
question. And I thank you guys in advance for any help you can give
me.
Setup: Macromedia Flash Professional 8 & Flash
Professional 8 Video Encoder on Windows XP
What I did: Took 3 seperate .MOV files and encoded them into
.FLV using Flash Professional 8 Video Encoder.
I then imported those into Flash and published the project
using the default Video container.
Problem: I can't hear any sound on playback.
I have verified the following;
1. Audio is working on my PC
2. Audio is working on the original files (When played
through QuickTime)
Can someone point me in the right direction in terms of
things to look for either A. during the encoding process or B. in
my publishing settings.

Flash live streaming encoder question

Does flash8 pro encode STREAMING video as VP6 or Sorenson?
Non live streaming is VP6, but there seems to be no
conclusive answer as to whether live streaming uses the same
encoder.
I guess not, otherwise something like on2 flix live would
have no reason to exist if you already own flash pro...

The answer was to go back to Wowza. Adobe dropped the ball.

Adobe Media Encoder Question

Hey everyone! So I just switched from using AE CS5.5 to AE CC, which now has me use the Media Encoder to render all my files, which frankly is AWESOME. However, I sometimes like to render out a piece of a long video I'm editing so I can get a glimpse at how it is looking so far without having to wait for it to completely finish. With CS5.5 I was able to just *stop* rendering, and the video would publish to my desktop and end wherever I had stopped it. With Media Encoder when I hit stop, the file is nowhere to be found as if the program just throws it away after canceling. Is there a way to make it still render what it already got through so I at least have a partial file to view??

On further inspection, Even still renders are interlaced like mad...
What's wrong?!
EDIT:
I fixed it!!! Apparently when speeding up or slowing down clips, it merges the frames together giving off that horrible look! So I turned off "frame blend" And it looks super awesome.
