  • The "enter" key on the numeric keypad of my external mac keyboard has stopped working. Help!

The "enter" key on the numeric keypad of my external mac keyboard has stopped working with my Macbook pro.  If I plug the keyboard into any other computer, that entier key works fine. I'm using a standard Mac wired keyboard, & it's worked fine for 2 years now. Help!
This is the keyboard I am using: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB110LL/B/apple-keyboard-with-numeric-keypad
Not sure what I might have accidentily done to disable the enter key. (The normal enter key works fine, just the one on the numeric keypad.)
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi there,
Do you have any resolution to this problem in the end? Because it happened to me an exact same thing.
Please share if you have found a solution to your problem. I also cannot think of what I did wrong to disable the Enter key.

  • "enter" key in Mac Mail erratic (in preview pane)

    Hi,
I finally moved from Snow Leopard to Yosemite.
I noticed that the behavior of the 'enter' key (the misnamed key that should be called 'return', #1)
when used in the message preview pane is erratic.
Hitting 'enter' always deletes the highlight message ... that's expected.
But what isn't expected is that sometimes the highlight moves *down* to the
next older message, and sometimes it moves *up* to the next newer message.
The behavior I've seen for the last four "enter"s: down, up, up, down.
This is highly disconcerting, and I've already lost (into the trash) emails due to this ...
because as I'm hitting "enter" to delete the current message, I've reading ahead,
I see the message above (where I expect the highlight to go), and have decided
"yeah, I'll delete that too" ... and I hit the enter key a second time, before realizing
the darn highlight moved the wrong way.
I've done a fair amount of testing ... including:
       - having the above message being read vs. not yet read
      - having the below message being read vs. not yet read
      - using arrow/mouse to move to a mesage
There's no apparent cause/effect.  About 80% of the time, 'enter' deletes and
then moves up ... 20% of the time it deletes and moves down.
As you may guess, Snow Leopard's Mac Mail *always* moved up for me
    View:
[x] sort by date (and, clicked on date so newest is at top, not bottom)
      [x] newest message on top
(nothing else checked; I've previously clicked on "Expand all conversations",
but rather than showing it checked, sigh, it's now grayed out (along with
"Collapse all conversations", and "Organize by conversation" is black (not grayed
    out, and not checkmark).
    Prefs:
      General:

       Viewing
         [x] Use classic layout
List Preview [2 lines]   (note: I suspect this should be grayed out
when "classic layout" is selected, since (a) it has no effect, and (b)
classic view uses a single line per message.)
         [x] load remote content
         [x] use smart addresses
         all else unchecked
The other Prefs categories (Accounts, Junk Mail, Fonts & Colors,
Composing, Signatures, Rules, Mail Hub) have no apparent
controls that seem related to this.
I do have MailHub installed, but I'm not aware of it having a potential
    to affect this behavior.
    thanks,
    Stan
#1. I mentioned "enter" vs. "return" to clarify that I mean the "normal" key people
nowadays think of as "enter" ... not the "keypad enter" (the "enter" key on
the numeric keypad / secondary keypad).  I'm just being pedantic, I guess : )

    (fixed minor typo)

Er, make that "backspace", not "enter", to delete the highlighted message.  Sigh, sorry!
    However, I found the answer.
Assume you've hit the up or down arrow in the message preview pane.
Now, "backspace" will delete the highlighted message *and* move in the
same direction as your last up or down arrow!
In effect, Mail says "hmm...you were moving in direction X before, so you probably
want to move in direction X again".
(Had there been no up/down keypress since starting Mail, "up" is the default direction.)
And if your last direction was indicated by pressing pageUp or pageDown?
...trick question ... those don't move you in the message preview pane
Annoying, but at least I (think) I understand it.

  • How to select an item from a dropdown menu using Enter key

A website I frequently use opens with a dropdown menu. Using my former browser, I was able to select the an item from the dropdown list by hitting the first letter with my keyboard and then hitting Enter. (Think of entering an address and selecting TX from a dropdown menu of states. Often you can hit T twice to get to TX and then the Enter key will advance the cursor to the zip code field.) Since converting to Firefox, the Enter key no longer works to advance to the next screen...I now have to move the mouse to a "Go" button and click it after selecting the desired item from the downdown menu. It's a small thing, but constantly switching back and forth between mouse and keyboard is becoming annoying. Is there an option in Firefox to select items simply by highlighting them in the dropdown menu and hitting the Enter key, instead of having to use the mouse to click a "Go" button? Thanks

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
In Firefox 4 you can use one of these to start in <u>[[Safe mode]]</u>:

  • Safari 6 won't accept enter key

    Hi,
safari 6 worked fine for me until today: if I enter a term in the search/URL bar which is not an adress the enter key won't work. I press enter and nothing happens. It's different when I type a URL like "apple.com" then it will bring me to that page after hitting enter. but if I type for instance "apple mac" nothing happens after hitting enter. I already did a safe restart but the problem persists...

It's the same for me, and it's driving me insane.
There seems to be no place to download safari and no easy way to reinstall it. When clicking on the magnifier glass in the search bar I can click on "search history" or "search page" but clicking on "google search" won't work.

  • I removed the ENTER key and can't get it back on

    Hi,
Approximately 2 months ago i removed a few keys off my Macbook Pro to clean them. I managed to replace all of them except for the ENTER key.
Underneath the casing there are 2 plastic bases which scissor. These bases attach via hooks on the main keyboard. I managed to get one back on but i can't get the other base back on. The enter key itself still works but without the housing on top.
Went i went to the genius bar i was told because t was out of warranty they would charge me or if i went back to the retailer (Tesco) they would fix it within the 6 year european consumer law. The genius said that he could see it had not been mistreated and it shouldn't be a problem. When i consequently called Tesco they told me they wouldn't as it was user damage and that i should go back to Apple because when Tesco arrange repairs they get Apple to do them anyway.
Im a little tired of heading backward and forward between the two companies and no one is helping. I just want my key back on.
    I have a mid 2012 Macbook Pro. i5 Processor, 4GB Ram, 500GB HDD.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in full screen mode (press F11 or Fn + F11 to toggle; Mac: command+Shift+F).<br />
If you are in full screen mode then hover the mouse to the top to make the Navigation Toolbar and Tab bar appear.<br />
You can click the Maximize button at the top right to leave full screen mode or right click empty space on a toolbar and use "Exit Full Screen Mode" or press F11.<br />

I'm been using the "ENTER" key all my life, but now all of the sudden does not work, I have to use the "RETURN" key now instead... Can somebody tell me how to fix it little crazy thing....
    Thansk!

Are you using an Apple keyboard? What kind of Mac are you using and which OS (I'm assuming Leopard)?
It's probably a problem with your keyboard. If you're not using an Apple keyboard, try toggling Num Lock.

  • PB15/OS X 10.4 without Enter Key

    Hi all folks,
    I spend some time to use a PB15 with OS X 10.4.4,
but all the time I try to use the Enter key (the between
right Apple and the Cursor Control keys) the key works
    like the Return key.
I use the Keyboard Overview (from the little Flag in the
Menue) and alle the Time I press the Enter key a key
stroke for Return is displayed, not for Enter.
Where is the Enter key, does some know how to get the
    key back.
With my PB12 (OS X 10.2.8) the Enter key is available,
all the time I use Key Caps Application a key stroke
is displayed for the right key. The PB12 know where
the Enter or Return key is, but the PB15 does not.
    Is this a PB12/PB15 or a OS X 10.2/10.4 feature?!
    Thanks for any help,
    Lutz

You can remap the keyboard to some limited extent on Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse -> Keyboard Shortcuts. Though I'm not sure it will be able to do what you want. Backup your computer before attempting this in case it goes wrong.
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html explains how to backup.
There are quite a few third party macro and keyboard shortcut generation software titles on http://www.macupdate.com/ and http://www.versiontracker.com/ Use those search engines to find one that works best for you. Do two separate searches for macro, and keyboard shortcut when visiting them. Note since these programs modify how the system behaves, it is wise to backup your data before installing them, and make sure when you update your machine that you check that they are updated for your updated operating system before you update the operating system.
