[SOLVED] Xorg & Firefox lock Gnome desktop, causing massive CPU usage

Hi there,
since I have installed ArchLinux x64 on this laptop (Core 2 Duo, 9600M GT with Nvidia's binary driver 195.36.15-2, Gnome 2.30) Xorg spins out of control every so often - more often repeatedly in an hour, sometimes not for a prolonged time.
This appears to occur (so far only) when Firefox is running (with any site, independent of Flash, but looks as if its main window has to be open) with which it then consumes an entire CPU core, making the mouse pointer and any terminal cursor blink rapidly, as well as windows being selectable, but not e. g. resizable or closable. Any keyboard input to a terminal has to be hammered in repeatedly to be accepted.
It also seems as if it is especially prone to happen if another program (say, gThumb) is ordered to switch to full-screen by F11 with FF's window open in the background, which frequently for whatever reason then also wants to change into full-screen, causing "conflict".
Switching to a console and killing Firefox or starting it via terminal and canceling it there ends each occurrence of the issue. Xorg.0.log does not report any errors.
An upgrade to Xorg 1.8 does not appear to have affected it.
I know this bug (or ones like it) has also occurred to others for years now, but I have so far been unable to find any solutions in reports concerning it.
Any help, please?

edit: I cannot say exactly what apparently ended this issue, however (of the changes I explicitly remember) after the following it does no longer occur:
    1. Had to delete the extensions.* (cache, ini, rdf) files as they became corrupted.
    2. Removed the Fox Splitter (aka Split Browser) extension.

Well yes, I though about this too, but that certainly wouldn't solve the problem (esp. were it to appear with other apps); besides, there are just way too many features (extensions, scripts etc.) that Chrome a) does not have or b) would be a royal pain to properly add.

  • Recently FireFox often has been causing 100% CPU usage and locks up until it finishes the process (various ones). Clearing cookies/cache didn't help. Any ideas?

    Windows 2000 SP4, 1g RAM, Firefox 9.0.1
We keep IE6 and Firefox open simultaneously for 2 different mail accounts. Firefox was always much faster even with 3 or 4 tabs open, but for the past couple of weeks when trying to update a screen the CPU suddenly goes to 100% usage and of course nothing will move until the particular process is finished. Closing one or more tabs does not help. If I close Firefox completely with Task Manager CPU usage goes back down to nil. After restarting Firefox CPU usage may or may not go back up depending upon whether it tries to continue the previous task that was locking it up.
It did not do this with Firefox 3.6 but then again it didn't happen immediately after updating to 9.0.1 either.

100% CPU usage occurred most often toward the end of the working day when busy trying to print on-line postage. We don't have any memory-consuming plugins but according to the knowledge base articles Firefox memory usage can gradually increase during the day even if you do nothing. It seems that may be the problem so we close and restart Firefox more often now as that usually fixes the problem. However, if we get stuck on a particular website update that causes the CPU to to go 100%, we can always start Firefox without previous tabs so the update will stop, or simply use a different browser until we have time to let the computer play games with itself.
So our workaround of restarting Firefox turns out to be the final solution (until we find something better - will post it if we do). Vic

  • Websites with flash content are causing tremendous CPU usage!!

    Greetings!
I finally installed the long-awaited version 4 of firefox, and I am really disappointed. In addition to slight sluggishness now and again, it turns out that websites with Flash content (even those sites with a little flash advertising banner) are causing my CPU usage to really go up.
It's slowing down my machine, making my CPU fans spin loudly, and making for a disappointing web browsing experience.
I have disabled all add-ons, and done the usual. Even tried installing Chrome for the first time ever!
The problem is definitely Flash + Firefox 4.
I have created a brand new profile, but no dice. Wondering if anyone else experiences a high CPU load on pages with flash...

Adobe Flash Player has also been crashing periodically on 2 of my computers, I'm still running XP, one of them a powerful HTPC, Dell Optiplex 755 SFF over a new Cable Internet Connection. Buffering, Lagging, crashing when streaming video for Catchup TV (Freeview) via Firefox Adobe Flash Player Add-On, does not happen on Youtube though. Lagging & Crashing does NOT occur AT ALL in Google Chrome, but I hate that browser.
Have tried the usual disabling Flash Hardware Acceleration + Protected Mode, setting storage to Unlimited, disabling FF Ad Blockers + Hardware Acceleration, cleaning Caches, updating program versions, everything bar reinstalling programs. It's not happening in Chrome, why in Firefox?

  • Adobe stuffs cause high CPU usage

I just download Creative Cloud a few days ago for Primiere CC and since then there is always something from it that causes ~50% CPU usage. I tried to end the process by Task Manager and something else just replace the previous one's place. Sometimes it's CEP Service Manager, sometimes it's Core Sync, CEF Helper, etc. and it's driving me nut! I mean like right now Firefox only takes about 20% while those things just sky rocket the CPU usage. What should I do? How do I stop this?

Since I installed CC, my laptop has been running very hot too.

  • Rim.desktop.exe high cpu usage and internet activity

What the heck is going on with desktop 6 software? Rim.Desktop.exe is running 10-20% cpu utilization and my router lights are blinking like crazy. It won't shut down right away while this is going on either. I have to force the shutdown to close the app and stop the internet activity. This goes on when my phone is connected or not. Storm 9530.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
If you do not have that 3rd party add-on running, do you notice a difference in the cpu usage? or network connectivity?
Also did you experience any of these problems with running with DTM 5.0.1
The only network connection that Desktop Manager uses is to register the PIN number and to check for updates and down the new updates.  But it does not continue constantly.
I would see if you can use BlackBerry Desktop Software without the 3rd party add-on unless you tried before, to see if it's a third party add-on causing the issue or Desktop Manager.
I look forward to your results.

  • [10.1.2] Protected Mode causing 100% CPU Usage/Extra Processes on Win XP 32-bit?

    Hello,
I'm not 100% sure if the two are related, but I have a client who was seeing 100% CPU usage using Adobe Acrobat Reader X 10.1.2 on Windows XP 32-bit and Firefox 11. The acrord32.exe process would hang around after closing the main window and eventually leading to tons of processes and his CPU at 100% use. I believe disabling Protected Mode may have solved this issue. I didn't see it documented anywhere so I figure I'd post about it here and see if anyone else was seeing this resolved as well.

I noticed 'only' 50 % CPU usage. Not during Reader usage with ~ 20 %, but it started after closing main window.
Two instances of acrord32.exe were created - the moment pdf was opened - of which one was using zero CPU.
After opening another pdf, 2 more processes were created, so 4 in total. Have seen 2 of them using 100 %.
    Issue is easily recreated.
This is all in 10.1.3, no fix from Adobe, only THE fix from you: turning of Protected Mode!
After which now only one proces is created, with 1 to 3 pdf documents opened at same time.
This instance is then nicely shutdown after the last pfd is closed.

  • Applet causes high CPU usage

    Hallo,
I have a strange problem with my applet. It displays medical images. After loading Image the CPU usage of java jiumps to 100% on single core processors and to 50% on 2 core processors, and stays high, without any interaction of user. I've used Java VisualVM to profile the applet and it says that: javax.swing.SystemEventQueueUtilities$ComponentWorkRequest.run() 94.76343 787851 ms (94,8%) 58823 times invoked is
I'm not sure this is the cause of the problem. I don't use any loops while noone is interacting with the applet. Has anyone idea or suggestion what's going wrong?
This CPU load is independent of browser and operating system. I've profiled it on firefox.
    with regards
    Rafal Ziolkowski

    Good job figuring it out.
Rule of thumb to prevent future problems: the paintComponent is used for painting and should do nothing else - setBorder() is a state change and thus does not belong in the paintComponent() method. You can all relate it back to a general programming rule of thumb: a function or method should perform only one task.

  • Firefox is eating up between 90% CPU usage to %230 CPU usage, while on a text-only page. I've tried many of the fixits. They didn't work. What can I do?

    I've cleared cookies multiple times
    I've emptied the cache
I cleared my download history, and a majority of my browsing history
I've tried having hardware acceleration for both flash and firefox on and off
I turned off all my apps and plugins and when that did nothing I turned back on the ones I need. I never had a lot of apps to begin with. only a max of 5. I had quite a few plugins, but i disabled all but quicktime, flash, and silverlight. I have those three set on "ask to activate" so none are "always active" anymore.
I also tried a couple things from the FAQ and forums here about changing a few settings in the "about:config" setup.
A few of the above things initially worked, but after a day or two it'd be back to sucking up my CPU and memory. I would then try the same thing again, and this second time there would be no improvement.
The real memory will fluctuate between 200 MB and 1.7 GB, and has done so for quite a while.
Even after I've left streaming sites, and sites with lots of images, and I'm not downloading anything, the memory and the CPU will still do that. I only have a handful of tabs open at a timeusually, and all of them are mostly text. I'll quit and reopen firefox, which will initially bring the memory and CPU usage down, but it inevitably climbs up quite quickly, regardless of my tab usage. It'll be the same if I'm playing a flash game or scrolling through blogs.
I never had any of these problems with Firefox 23, and my internet usage habits haven't changed at all. I had some of this slowness a few times with version 24, but nowhere near as bad as this, or as constant. Almost everyday I end up googling for other ways to speed things up. Everything I do never slowed down Firefox on earlier versions.
I've tried all my usual tasks on Safari which will never climb above 30-40 MB of memory, even on netflix streaming, or flash games, and the CPU will average around 8 and 11%.

i'm also having major CPU problems w/ FF 29.0.1. when i restart the app it calms down again but after loading tabs it steadily climbs up to 100% after not too long. i have checked out the 2 CPU links/articles above and do all the basic troubleshooting and tips, but with all the FF tools & add-ons isn't there some sort of CPU monitor that has the ability to display which extensions/scripts are hogging the CPU? Activity Monitor on Mac just shows the total used by the app. it's impossible in my case to efficiently disable dozens of add-ons & scripts, restart, and test each one by one b/c it can take several hrs before the CPU starts to spike high again. i have no time for this.
    thanks

  • Spreadsheet functions causing 100% CPU usage

Running ColdFusion Enterprise 9,0,0,251028 with JVM 1.6.0_14 on a Windows 2003 server.   I am finding that when using <cfspreadsheet> and the spreadsheet functions to build a spreadsheet the server CPU maxes out at 100% while the spreadsheet object is being built.   The spreadsheet is not overly large or complex:  10-15 columns and 400-500 rows.   This behavior is consistent - it happens every time, even when building a simple spreadsheet with 1 column and a few rows.  Is anyone else experiencing this?    Is it a known problem with a fix?  Thank you.
    Michael Mongeau
    Stratus Technologies

I was able to root cause the excessive CPU usage to a single-CPU virtual machine.  When I ran the same code on dual-CPU virtual machines the CPU usage went to 50-60% but never reached 100% and stayed there as it does on the single-CPU virtual machine.   So there appears to be an issue with JRun and Apache POI on single-CPU machines.  I simply had my system administrator add another CPU to the virtual machine and the problem no longer occurs.

  • Small Acrobat file causes 100% cpu usage with v. 7.09

    Using Acrobat professional 7.09
I have a small acrobat file (94k) that causes my cpu to peg at 100% I used acrobat professional to convert an eps file to a pdf file. Is there a general known issue that could be causing this?

    > Looking at the plot, you might want to consider trying to use a vector graphic in the future. It looks like a plot that you may have created in MATLAB or such. In that case, why not just print to the PDF.
I used matplotlib, which can generate png, eps, svg, or even pdf files. The pdf in question was converted by acrobat from eps, which has worked well for me in the past. I wish acrobat pro 7 could handle svg.

  • NMIndexStoreSvr.exe causes high CPU usage

Within 2 - 24 hours after I restart my computer I'll notice that the CPU fan is very loud. When I open Windows Task Manager the CPU is at 95-100% usage. When I look at processes I see that the file "NMIndexStoreSvr.exe" is the biggest culprit. When I end that process, my CPU usage drops to 5% almost immediately.
Ending this process does not seem to affect Itunes. Has anyone else run across this. Is there a fix or a way to keep that file from running when I start up Windows?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I saw your post regarding the audiodg.exe error message. I did some research into that message and as you mentioned most of it is for Windows 7, I can find very little for Windows 8. What other games do you notice this issue with? I looked into DOTA2 and it lists XP, Vista and Windows 7 under the requirements but doesn't mention Windows 8.

  • Persistent Active Requests causing high CPU usage and load average

Hi, we've deployed a JSP application on standalone OC4J talking to Oracle DB. The whole thing runs on Sun Solaris. On some occasions (still investigating what causes this), the number of active requests rises (as seen from EM console) and never drops down. The weird thing is, the load average numbers are proportional to the number of persistent active request. If there are 3 active requests, load avg will be [3.x 3.x 3.x], and whenever persistent active request exist, CPU usage will shoot up to over 90% (usually between 95% - 100%). When the system is running normally, CPU usage is usually less than 20%. Is it possible to track down this problem and how? Many thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!!
The icons on the right of the menu bar … show a beachball when I put the cursor over themWell, if this was your only problem I would put it down to a corrupt preference or cache file. Nevertheless, it is worth seeing how much this helps.
The file you need to trash is 'systemuiserver.plist'. But there are potentially two of them, plus it is best to delete your caches as well, so ...
    In "/Users/<yourname>/Library/Caches", delete everything
    In "/Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences", delete com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
In "/Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/ByHost", delete com.apple.systemuiserver.xxx.plist where 'xxx' is a 12 digit (hexadecimal) numeric string.
See if this improves the situation, and post back with any remaining oddities.

  • Mixer window can cause high CPU usage, crashes

This is probably one of the weirdest bugs I've seen for a while. Here are the steps that I reproduce it for me, maybe someone will want to try this out and see if they get the same.
    1) Open an Empty Project template.
    2) Create 16 instrument tracks when it gives you the dialog. (even 1 will be enough, but the effect is clearer the more tracks you create)
    3) Open the mixer. Either in a window or in the pane.
    4) Now create a "multi-timbral" instrument track with the plus button (use the checkbox there).
    5) Select the 16th track, and now select one of the arrange tracks of the multi-timbral instrument.
    6) Open up Activity Monitor from your Utilities folder in Finder and see how much Logic is taking up CPU. It should be significantly higher than the idle state. On my MBP it'll be around 80%.
This is not a problem in itself, because when reproducing it like this the high CPU usage goes away when you select another track and won't return if you select the multi-timbral instrument again.
However, I have sessions where this will continue happening with a multi-timbral instrument all the time. Not only that, I've had Logic crash when this starts happening. And this whole thing will slow down the UI considerably when it's active.
The workaround that seems to work for me is simply not keeping the mixer window/pane open.

This is one of the issue which has already been raised to Microsoft and hopefully a public build will be available soon  in next cumulative update pack .
There are variety of reason for this starting for password mismatch or password not given , SFTP adapter unable to connect and so on .
There is good post here in below link for this issue

  • Gnome Volume Control High CPU Usage

    I have an interesting problem.
When I boot into Arch, my CPU usage is farly low. Jumping around 0 - 10% or so.
But as soon as I open up Gnomes Volume Control window. Cpu usage jumps up to 50 - 60% and stays there, No matter if the windows open or not.
My front channel is also at 0% on boot, so I normally go into the Volume Control to bring that up.
I noticed using alsamixer in the terminal will prevent the cpu usage from going so high. But if I open Gnome's Volume Manager, I have to log out, and log back in to get cpu usage back to normal. Is there anyway to avoid this or fix this issue?

This seems to be a known bug. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=gn … h&aq=f&oq=
