Entering Special Characters.

User requires information on entering special characters (i.e.: a with umlat, etc.) as part of a name. So long as the language code allows for such, what is the easiest way to accomplish such? User is using forms via IE.

I would think that the easiest way is to use OS level keyboard layouts. In XP they all come with the OS and its as easy as activating a new layout in the Regional and Language options Control Panel applet. Once you have done that you can switch between layout with a configurable key combination.
If that is not an option you can also enter umlauts with the Alt-[ASCII number] combination but that requires the user to remember the number for each umlaut.

  • How to enter Special Characters in JSP

    Is there any way to enter special characters such as ºC ? i am using J2EE and Oracle 9 i.
    When i try to enter 2ºC after updating the datbase it is converted to 2ºC. All special characters are prefixed with Â. Pls suggest some better way ..

    This normally relates to your unicode set you are using. For example the database is using a different way of storing data than how it's being parsed.
    One quick/dirty fix is to save the data using HTML encoded elements, for example ©
    You will also find that £ £ will cause problems. If your web app is only for one country then I would not worry about it however if you need multi language support then you need to read up a little

  • Entering special characters at the command line.

    I'm writing a simple program in java that automates certain processes in learning a foreign language.
    This includes holding a database of vocabulary within the context of a sentence and testing a student on words they have encountered.
    Nothing too tricky, except that I am having trouble with entering special characters at the command line. I'm not really surprised by this and was hoping that someone could help me.
    I'm using a mixture of Solaris 8 and Mac OS X 10.3 for running the software, so anyone with any input on either of these systems will be able to help.
    The characters I am trying to enter are the following:
    ,,,,,,,,,,,.
    They are latin, and used in Spanish amongst other languages.
    I'm a little confused by the implementation of character sets. I can enter these characters in applications such as word or textedit or an email, but just not at an X window.
    From looking at the web it appears that these characters can be input using the
    Latin1 (ISO 8859-1) character set or the ISO 10646-1/Unicode extension.
    I'm just not sure what I actually have to do to get it to work.
    If anyone can offer any help I'd be really grateful.
    Ian Stanton

    It's a problem that could be encountered in different circumstances, in this circumstance it is with a program I am writing in java.
    I anticipate that these days not that many applications are delivered that require use of the command line, but since I am still learning Java it is necessary to explore this avenue.
    It's interesting actually since presumably developers writing code for the international market need to accomodate characters similar to those I am attempting to enter, and more that are less familiar to me such as far and middle eastern scripts, and of course many others.
    We (possibly) assume that since a character is printed on our keyboard it is a simple matter to read it in. But what if I was a Spanish student wanting to type a character into the command line and that character wasn't there? I believe that Spanish (and variants of that language) is the third most spoken language on the planet.
    These characters are often relatively easy to enter in office and internet applications amongst others but apparetly not so at the command line.
    Maybe this question is more suitably asked of the Unix community but I thought it a good idea to try Java since i was writing Java code and that many Java programmers could have encountered the same problem.

  • After Effects 7 for Windows - How to enter special characters

    How can I enter special characters in a text layer? Like ampersand, french double quotes etc.
    Using an Alt-Numpad combination doesn't work, neither does typing the text in an editor and trying to copy and paste it to AE.
    Best regards,
    Christian Kirchhoff

    Make sure your operating settings match AE's language. Also pick such characters from a font that supports the correct Unicode range (the default system fonts for instance). If that still fails, restart your system and/ or AE. This may take several attempts and is annoying, but these issues have no clear pattern to them, so it's hard to make out the exact cause.

    This has nothing do to with NLS_LANGUAGE. In general, character set processing depends on NLS_LANG setting (which is an OS setting and not a instance initialization parameter) and database character set. To understand NLS_LANG see OTN NLS_LANG FAQ http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/globalization/htdocs/nls_lang%20faq.htm.
    However, I think that JDBC is an exception and does not use the character set defined by NLS_LANG. See last answer in following discussion:

  • Special characters in SBWP dynamic columns are not showing for some users

    Hi experts,
    We have set up a dynamic columns for business workplace. One of the field displays the comments entered by the user. Some users are able to see the values entered perfectly. But for some users, if we enter special characters like @gopal, it is not displaying the value in dynamic column.
    Are there any workflow/user settings need to be changed.
    Thanks

    I had the same issue, you should check the link between AD and CRM, so you could make a new user in AD and connect your CRM account with it, then you should return the old AD account back. It worked for me, try it :)

  • Problem with special characters (umlaut)

    Hi,
    I have a text box in my form.
    when I am entering the normal characters it working fine and the values are
    persisting quiet well in the database but when I am entering special characters (umlaut characters),
    it is not storing them properly in the database.
    I have checked in the logs at the application server side and the problem is while getting the values from
    the request. The JSP which is submitting the request I have explictly put the following line:
    request.setCharacterEncoding("iso-8859-1");
    But this also not seems to be working.
    Could you please let me know the resolution of this problem.
    Thanks in advance
    Amit

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply.
    I have checked the database and there is no problem there.
    To check if I am getting the correct values from the JSP I have put the following code in my action class:
                                  if(columnName.equalsIgnoreCase("REMARKS"))
                                       log.debug("Character Encoding value of  is "+Character.getNumericValue(''));
                                       log.debug("Character Encoding value of  is "+Character.getNumericValue(''));

                                       log.debug("Character Encoding value of  is "+Character.getNumericValue(''));
                                       log.debug("Character Encoding value of  is "+Character.getNumericValue(''));
                                       String str = value.toString();
                                       char[] remarkArray = new char[str.length()];
                                       str.getChars(0, (str.length()-1), remarkArray, 0);
                                       for (int i = 0; i < remarkArray.length; i++)
                                            log.debug("Encoding value of "+remarkArray[i]+" is "+Character.getNumericValue(remarkArray));
    In the remarhs I am setting the value in the form as ""
    and I am getting the following in the logs:
    Character Encoding value of &#9472; is -1
    Character Encoding value of is -1
    Character Encoding value of &#9604; is -1

  • Image Capture and special characters in file names.

    Hung up image capture yesterday: We tried to enter a date in the file name of the document we were scanning. It proceeded normally, but then did not save the file and image capture would not scan again until OS restarted.
    Problem repeated until we discovered a slash in the file name box. Changed the file name and everything works now.
    Software should either prevent user from entering special characters in the file name box, or properly handle the error and not hang up the application.

    Hi,
    Would mind providing a screenshot about how your Content Query Web Part rendering in your environment?
    In my environment, it displays the filename which contains periods:
    I would suggest you create a new page and insert a Content Query Web Part to perform the test again.
    Feel free to reply with the test result or if there any progress.

  • Using special characters

    How do you enter special characters (such as curved quotes) in a headline that is in caps? I have tried using the formula "alt +) or alt + Shift + ) and get no result. If I do the same in a paragraph of regular text, it works. Thanks.

    On the Mac you can get the curled quotes via Alt and one or two other keys, depending on your language.
    You can access a preview of the keyboard via system preferences >  keyboard, input sources, activate to show in the menu,
    It is faster to get used to write with alt and shift for extended characters on the mac than using the glyph panel.
    Here is the German (Germany and Austria) keyboard on the Mac:
    With other languages you have a different layout, even with German (Swiss) it would be different, EN-US is different than EN-UK.

  • Keystroke combinations needed for special characters in specific fonts?

    How do you see the required keystrokes to enter special characters? Very frustrating!!! Using Pages to help my wife create a brochure. We wanted to use one of the symbols available in the font "Type Embellishments One LET" (which I assume installed with Pages). In Font Book we could see all the possible characters BUT NOT HOW TO TYPE THEM. We ended up typing scores of keys and keystroke combinations to finally see the one we wanted, then use cut and paste. There must be a better way but we (along with some Mac Support people at my work) cannot find it.
    Is there a way to do this without buying a program like PopChar. Seems like this should be fundamental to using a Mac out of the box.
    Thank you for any suggestions.

    You can use "Keyboard Viewer" to see what characters are created with various keystrokes. Open the International Preference Pane, click on the Input Menu tab & click the box next to Keyboard Viewer. This will make this available in your menu bar by clicking the flag icon. Select "Show Keyboard Viewer" from the flag menu & you will see a layout of the keyboard. You can then hold down the shift key, the option key OR shift + option to see all the possibilities. The highlighted ones are the accents than you can apply to letters. To get "é" type option-e (nothing will appear), then type e. This accent could be place over most letters. You can change the font in the drop-down menu. Not all fonts will have all characters. Keyboard Viewer places the typing directly into the top, open document.

  • Have a problem in Numbers with entering data directly into a cell when a table reaches a certain size and special characters are used?

    I am creating a list of words with special characters in some of them. I get to a point where I cannot enter data directly into the cell. I have to use the data entry bar at the top in the toolbar. Any solutions available?
    This is the table I am creating...
    From row 25 on, I am only able to enter data into the cell through the toolbar at the top and not directly into the cell itself. I believe that this problem originates from the special characters I have inserted in the previous records because if I do not use special characters, then the spreadsheet acts flawlessly. Have there been issues in Numbers with data entry, the size of a table, and using special characters?

    I would try removing the rows with "special" characters one at a time to see which one is causing the problem

  • Entering special language characters in JSF

    I am using JDeveloper 10.1.3.3 to develop a JSF/ADF application. My database is using the AL32UTF8 character set. If the following is entered into an af:inputText field....
    Podmiotowi w 2 okresie leczenia proszę
    ... when the record is saved it changes ...
    proszę to prosz + (what I guess is the unicode representation of the last character "&#281")
    .... and this is what is being stored in the database. This would be ok, but when the record is displayed again in the browser, it is not resolving the unicode back to the correct character.
    How do I allow the entry of these special characters and have them correctly displayed on the web page after saving ? I also have a similar problem with Hungarian and Polish.
    Many thanks,
    Brent Harlow

    Hi Shay,
    Thanks for that. I had set the compiler project properties and the locale of the browser but I was missing the encoding within the JSF page.
    Once I changed
    <jsp:directive.page contentType="text/html;charset=windows-1252"/>
    and
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252"/>
    to use "text/html;charset=UTF-8", it worked a treat.
    Many thanks for the help !
    Cheers,
    Brent
