Enterprise (specifically 6.5) best practices from a server standpoint?

I am a system administrator for a decent sized company that relies on 6.5 for our financial reporting. We're having a rough time getting it to be both fast and reliable. For instance if we disable oplocks (recommended to prevent corruption), consolidations take ~1 hour and drive a large amount of data between the terminal server it's being run on and the NAS. If we enable them things go much faster (although it still causes several gig of data to be read, presumably from the NAS where the application resides) and makes the application less stable.
We have about 30 concurrent users across two load balanced terminal servers, both with 2 dual core processors and 3 gig of RAM. I suspect that they may be starved for resources so we're now testing on a much larger server, but I'd like to know if we are missing anything else. Any documentation would help, as would an explanation of what Enterprise is actually doing under the covers during a consolidation.
Another issue we are having is that for certain folks moving between cells while using Excel with the Retrieve plugin loaded can take upwards of 10 seconds. Just to move from one empty cell to another. I am not certain what this is a symptom of, but if you open the same file on the same machine as the same user with just Excel it's nice and fast.
Sorry I suspect these are newbie questions but I can't find good documentation on this anywhere. Links would be greatly appreciated.

Transport user specific layout of standard report from developer server to

Hi ,
I am using user specific layout of standard report in my customizing report for retrieving data from standard report.
i want to transport this user specific layout of standard report from developer server (say client 400 ) to production server ( say client 100 ).
Also i want to copy this layout for all end users ( different user names ) in production server.
I tried to import user specific layout , it is possible only with in the same server ( say developer server , but different clients , say 400 to 450).
please help me to sort out this .

Best practice from passing messages from servlets

Is there a best practice for passing user messages (typically errors) back to the page from servlets?
e.g. http://localhost:4502/content/geometrixx/en.html?message=Some user error message

Well I suppose that answer to that question depends somewhat on your requirements, but I would say using a query string as you have indicated would be less than ideal because the page with the message would not be cached. No depending on your requirements and what sort of message you are passing that might be OK - especially if you message is highly personalized.
If however you have a limited number of standard messages to display a more common approach is to have each message have it's own page and then to configure the servlet to redirect to the appropriate page based on the desired message.
If you want the user to end up on the same page they submitted to the servlet from then another common approach would be to have the post to the servlet be AJAX and then display the message client side without having to change the URL.

Actually, in the general case, Adobe Illustrator is absolutely not a general purpose EPS editor. Adobe Illustrator is capable of fully and properly editing only EPS files saved from the current or earlier versions of Adobe Illustrator and even then, you must have any and all fonts referenced by the EPS file, even if the font is embedded in the EPS file, installed on your computer system. Adobe Illustrator's imaging model is a subset of Adobe PostScript and as such, opening an EPS file generated by any software other than the current or earlier version of Adobe Illustrator may yield corrupted, modified, or otherwise incorrect results and this is especially true if the EPS references more than one color space. This includes EPS saved or exported from Acrobat and InDesign.

Best practice for licence server for RDS Farm & Certificate errors

I am in the process of creating an RDS farm using Server 2008 R2. I have three Session Hosts and a Connection Broker.
I have a set of 10 user CALs available and also another 20 on our current RDS server which will need migrating once we go live with the farm.
I understand the User CALs need to be installed on another Server 2008 R2 and I am wondering what is best practice. We are running on an entirely virtual environment and it would be simple enough to create another server and install the CALs on there.
The only issue with that is that I would need to create a replica of this new machine for DR purposes, but this would take up valuable space which may not be necessary.
We are planning on creating replicas of one of the Session hosts and the broker for DR, so I am guessing I would need to install some CALs on the Session Host which is going to be replicated.
There are a few options and I am just wondering what is the best way to go about things.
Also, as an aside, I am getting an annoying certificate error each time I log a test user onto the RDS farm - I think this is because I am using the DNS alias of the RDS Farm to log on. Is there an easy way to get around this, other than the 'Do not show
this message again'. I have been doing some research and the world of Certificates is very confusing!!

Hi Caroline,
Firstly for your License related issue, you can perform the step on any VM or can create the new VM as replica for RDSH server also. But please be sure that you have installed RD License server on it, activate it and then install RDS CAL on it. But be safe
if possible don’t install RD License server with RDCB, please make that out of it as little away. As you can also install RD License server with AD or make replica of that and install RDL on that.

What’s the specified certificate error which you are receiving?
If you're going to allow users to connect externally and they will not be part of your domain, you would need to deploy certificates from a public CA. In meantime you can refer blog for getting insight for certificate case.

BPC 7M SP6 - best practice for multi server setup

Experts,
We are considering purchasing new hardware for our BPC 7M implementation. My question is what is the recommended or best practice setup for SQL and Analysis Services? Should they be on the same server or each on a dedicated server?
The hardware we're looking at would have 4 dual core processors and 32 GB RAM in a x64 base. Would this adequately support both services?
Our primary application cube is just under 2GB and appset database is about 12 GB. We have over 1400 users and a concurrency count of 250 users. We'll have 5 app/web servers to handle this concurrency.
Please let me know if I am missing information to be able to answer this question.

I don't think there's really a preference on that point. As long as it's 64bit, the servers scale well (CPU, RAM), so SQL and SSAS can be on the same server. But it is important to look also beyond CPU and RAM and make sure there's no other bottlenecks like storage (Best practice is to split the database files on several disks and of course to have the logs on disks that are used only for the logs). Also the memory allocation in SQL and OLAP should be adjusted so that each has enough memory at all times.
Another point to consider is high availability. Clustering is quite common on that tier. And you could consider having the active node for SQL on one server and the active node for OLAP (SSAS) on the other server. It costs more in SQL licensing but you get to fully utilize both servers, at the cost of degraded performance in the event of a failover.

Hi ahmed,
You have configured your CAS to be your DHCP server, Thats well and good because you are using Real IP mode, Which Supports the CAS to be a DHCP server.
Remember
This Setting is only For your Authentication VLAN that your client gets an ip While Authentication ok.
When your Client switches to Access VLAN , your client trafiic no longer flows through the CAS so CAS is now not responsible for DHCP.
You'll have to configure another DHCP on the Trusted Side which can Lease IPs to the Acess VLAN Members.
As you have configured OOB then your client is in Acess VLAN and does not come in contact with the CAS so you need the Trusted side DHCP to give the Client an IP address.
Here in your Scenario your ACCESS VLANS are 2022,2044

As far as I know, there is no standard for the
usage of DHCP scope. Just make sure that the IP address pool isn’t exhausted.

Best practice for client-server(Socket) application

I want to build a client-server application
1) On startup.. client creates connection to Server and keeps reading data from server
2) Server keeps on sending different messages
3) Based on messages(Async) from server client view has to be changed
I tried different cases ended up facing IllegalStateChangeException while updating GUI
So what is the best way to do this?

Best practice migrate file server

I have 3 file servers n two different domains:
FileS01 and FileS02 in domainA (FileS01 / FileS02: Windows 2003R2)
FilesS03 in domainB (FileS03: Windows 2003R2)
Should I migrate to a new
corporate server to be FileS01 (Windows 2012)
also call and be in the domainA.

Yes, it is a ton of information but it also covers all angles; what to name the servers, when to rename the servers, using DFSN to make things smoother, the migration tools, migrating local users, etc. Due to the sheer amount of information, ignore
the areas that don't apply to your implementation (BrancheCache, as an example.) HOWEVER, I do recommend you consider their suggestion to move this into a DFS Namespace. That way the next time you need to move to a new server, the users will barely feel
it.

Mac Pro 10.7 Server DMZ best practice

The Mac Pro has 2 gigE, what is the best practice for lion server and DMZ?
Should I Ignor one and put the server in the DMZ and firewall from the LAN to the server (pain for file share), or use one port for the DMZ and one into the LAN.
I have been trying to use the two ports and LION SERVER seems to want to bind only to one address (10.1.1.1 DMZ or 192.168.1.1 LAN).
Does anyone have a best practice for this? I a using a Cisco ASA 5500 for the firewall.

If you put your server in a DMZ all trafffic will be sent to it unfiltered, in which case the server firewall would be your only line of defense against attack.
For better security, set firewall rules in the Cisco that will pass trafffic to the ports you want open and deny traffic on all other ports. You can also restrict access to specific ports by allowing or denying specific IP addresses or address blocks in the firewall settings.

Best practice for if/else when one outcome results in exit [Bash]

I have a bash script with a lot of if/else constructs in the form of
if <condition>
then
<do stuff>
else
<do other stuff>
exit
fi
This could also be structured as
if ! <condition>
then
<do other stuff>
exit
fi
<do stuff>
The first one seems more structured, because it explicitly associates <do stuff> with the condition. But the second one seems more logical because it avoids explicitly making a choice (then/else) that doesn't really need to be made.
Is one of the two more in line with "best practice" from pure bash or general programming perspectives?

I'm not sure if there are 'formal' best practices, but I tend to use the latter form when (and only when) it is some sort of error checking.
Essentially, this would be when <do stuff> was more of the main purpose of the script, or at least that neighborhood of the script, while <do other stuff> was mostly cleaning up before exiting.
I suppose more generally, it could relate to the size of the code blocks. You wouldn't want a long involved <do stuff> section after which a reader would see an "else" and think 'WTF, else what?'. So, perhaps if there is a substantial disparity in the lengths of the two conditional blocks, put the short one first.
But I'm just making this all up from my own preferences and intuition.
When nested this becomes more obvious, and/or a bigger issue. Consider two scripts:
