Entries into Multicolumn Listbox/Safing Data in .txt-file

Hello. I haven't found anything helpful for my problem or better to say problems. I have to do a task that I have no idea how to solve. It isn't helping that I was never good with programming. Here is what I have up till now:
I want to write seven strings indivudally into a multicolumn listbox with seven columns. The first shall be a running number, increasing for every row. For this I'm using right now a Case Structure. And there is my first problem. I don't know how to realize that whenever a row is completed the next string is written into the next row instead of overwriting one in the completed row.
This has to go one for as long as the user wants to. Then there has to come a Pop Up Window - if that's the correct term - and shall ask the user if he/she wants to safe the created list into a textfile. And that's my next problem. I have no idea how to program that.
I know it's probably rather easy to program these things in LabVIEW 8.0 (which I'm using) but as I've already said I'm anything but good in programming at all and to make things even more complicated I don't want to do this task, therefore not putting all my energy into it as a result.
Please, can someone here help me?

Does it have to be a multicolumn ListBox?
Seems like a table might be more appropriate, if it's only for display purposes.
Either way, you need to use a FOR loop inside a FOR loop to generate a 2-D array of strings.
The INNER loop generates the strings for each column in a row, the OUTER loop generates each row.
You wire the 2-D array directly to a TABLE indicator, or to the ITEM NAMES property of a ListBox.
Attached is a pic.

  • How to write into multicolumn listbox during runtime?

    Hi,
    I am able to edit into multicolumn listbox. But i am not able to write into empty boxes... How to do that???
    Regards,
    Amit

    Hi Amit,
    Have you initialised the item names with any default values? If not try initialising the item names to a 2D size that will be large enough for you're requirements. Once this size is set in edit mode you can't enter data at runtime outside of this initialised area.

  • Filling large array into multicolumn listbox

    Hi,
    I need to fill a multicolumn listbox with a large array. I feed a 2D array into the ListNames property. The problem I am having is that if the array is large (+1000) it is taking forever to update the itemnames. Is this because the listbox is going through a resize? Is there someway to intialize the ItemNames array to speed up the insertion. It is also slow if the next array insertion (overwrite) is a small array.
    thanks Michael

    Hi Michael,
    Please take a look at the attached VI.
    This VI allows the user to programmatically (during run time) write data to a multicolumn listbox. The VI uses the control reference to a multicolumn listbox, so this VI will work on any multicolumn listbox. The VI has inputs for the 2D array (of strings), and a start location (row and column) where the zeroth (top left) element goes. The VI returns the end row and end column of the multicolumn listbox. This is useful for writing successive entries to the listbox.
    In this vi, I am currently writing a 1000*10 2D array to a multicolumn listbox and it runs very fast.
    Regards,
    Ankita A.

  • Editing entries in multicolumn listbox

    I am using a multicolumn listbox to display test parameters - ie columns of step number, temperature and time data. I read a previously created test matrix and update the listbox items names using the property node.
    Is it possible to do the reverse - ie edit the item names while the app is running and save a new test matrix from the modified listbox?
    Thanks,
    Niel.

    It seems impossible to edit list in the running time. However, could you try to use string table to do that?

  • Pulling output data from .txt file

    Hello, I am trying to have a program that allows a user to input shopping items into the program andhave that input go to a .txt file called shoppinglist, then after the user is finished, he/she can type no to stop entering items to the list and the program will then pull all the info entered to the .txt file and output it to the screen, creating a shooping list for the user. My problem is that I am not quite sure how to output the data from the .txt file to the screen. Here is my code.
    import java.io.*; // uses the java io library for the
    import java.util.*; // BufferedReader class
    public class week5
    public static void main(String [] args)
    PrintWriter inputItems = null;

    BufferedReader outputItems = null;
    String line = null;
    outputItems = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("shoppinglist.txt"));
    line = outputItems.readLine();
    outputItems.close();
    catch(FileNotFoundException e)
    System.out.println("File file.txt not found");
    System.out.println("or could not be opened.");
    catch(IOException e)

    System.out.println("This program will create a shopping list:");
    String keepGoing = "yes";
    String item = null;
    Scanner keyboard = new Scanner(System.in);
    for (int count = 1; count < 999 && keepGoing.equalsIgnoreCase("yes");count++)
    //ask for input, write it to a file
    System.out.print("Please enter item # " + count + ": ");
    System.out.print("");
    item = keyboard.nextLine();
    inputItems.println(count + " " + item);
    //ask if you want to keep going
    System.out.print("Do you wish to enter more items (yes/no): ");
    System.out.print("");
    keepGoing = keyboard.nextLine();
    System.out.println("Your shopping list contains: " + item);
    System.out.print("");
    inputItems.close();
    } All the above does is output the last item entered by the user, not the whole shopping list. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    He hasn't even read the user input at that point.
    OP, you need to sit down and think about the exact order you want to do things in, and rewrite your code in a logical straightforward manner. It looks like you just threw some code in hoping it would work, instead of coding deliberately. I'm not insulting you or anything, I know you're new to Java. I'm just trying to give you some advice. Look at your code, and ask yourself why the following line of code appears before you've even written anything to your file:
    line = outputItems.readLine();

  • Export table data to txt file

    Hi,
    I have to dump the BKPF table data(some selected columns) into a txt file. It has around 30 lakh records.
    I am planning to select the data from se16 for different date ranges and export into different txt files.
    Is there any way that i can dump the whole data into a txt file for some selected columns.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
    goto se16> select the records as per requirement> goto change layout> select the number of column you required> click on the export option> select radio button unconverted> save the file in txt format.
    you will get only select columns in the text file.

  • Output data to txt file with full length of the field as in database

    Hi
    I have a problem related to output data I ntxt file on server
    for eg
    CONCATENATE
    wa_sagadr_outtab-seqno
    wa_sagadr_outtab-bpext
    wa_sagadr_outtab-name_org1
    wa_sagadr_outtab-country INTO wa_sagadr_text SEPARATED BY ''.
    the output is separated by single space irrespective of database length of the field , I want to display all the lenth of the database field eventhough the remaining space is blank ie if a field is 20 char in dtabase and only filled with 6 char the whole 20 char lenth should be displayed in the output file
    ouput as below
    required format ie space equvalent to as in database lenght
    000001       700006               C4 Plant AMD Export Sdn.Bhd.so on.
    my format as coming single space in between only
    000001 700006 C4 Plant AMD Export Sdn.Bhd
    pls suggest

    For this maintain an work area with the fields and structure same as the one which you want.
    ten populate the work are and write to file.
    concatenate will not work.
    e.g.
    DATA: begin of wa_sagadr_text,
              seqno like wa_sagadr_outtab-seqno,
              bpext like wa_sagadr_outtab-bpext,
              name_org1 like wa_sagadr_outtab-name_org1,
              country like wa_sagadr_outtab-country
              end of wa_sagadr_text,
    clear wa_sagadr_text.
    wa_sagadr_text-seqno = wa_sagadr_outtab-seqno.
    wa_sagadr_text-bpext= wa_sagadr_outtab-bpext.
    wa_sagadr_text-name_org1 = wa_sagadr_outtab-name_org1.
    wa_sagadr_text-country = wa_sagadr_outtab-country INTO wa_sagadr_text.
    transfer wa_sagadr_text to outputfile
    or write:/ your fields.

  • Why would only the first line of my data set txt file work?

    Hi -
    I had a lot of success using variables and external data sets until today.
    I have an external text file that I have imported as a data set (Image/Variables/Data Sets/Import...).  All of the variables have been defined and confirmed (at least PSD hasn't told me it can't find something which is the typical error msg.)
    This external text file, with the extension ".txt" has 12 lines on it, each line is 7 comma separated values, and each line is ending in a carriage return.
    YESTERDAY when I used File/Export/Export Data Set as Files... the procedure went beautifully for the 8 times I used it.  TODAY I only get the first of the 12 lines completed and then the export stops.  There are no error messages or other signs that Photoshop has choked on something so I guess something is wrong with my text file... BUT WHAT??
    Any insight on any step in this would be helpful.  You all know that if I'm using this feature it's because I have TONS of repetition ahead of me if it doesn't work.
    TIA your expertise,
    JL

    Fixed it!
    When Exporting as Data sets as files... the step I missed was to select "All Data Sets" from the Data Set drop down.
    Thanks all.

  • How to read data from txt file respectively

    Hi,
    I am triying to form an equation between two known points. I want to do this with the attached VI, the most critical point is that I will read the x1, y1, x2 and y2 coordinates from the same .txt file. They will be written in a .txt file and I will send them to the appropriate channel (x1, y1, x2 and y2) respectively. How can I get data in a rule from a .txt file?
    Could anyone please help me with this issue,

    Thank you very much for your helps, I am bit new to labview so I usually can not find the appropriate functions easily. And a new problem has rised in my application. I should write the A, B and C numbers in the respective series to the file 2.txt. I am able to write them in a straight forward case but I want to write the next triples (A B C) in the next row. Like this;
    A1 B1 C1
    A2 B2 C2
    A3 B3 C3
    So how can I put new line constant and space constant to my VI?

    I am trying to read data from serial port and write it on to a .txt file. I am able to write onto the file but it has got no formatting. What I would ideally like to do is, read the data from serial port, take only some parts of it and write on to the text file with proper formatting. Also, I would like to use the same file to append data each time. I am also having issues setting the pointer to EOF. I would like to append to end of file.
    This is my sample data
    18:33:23 02/10/10 28.32             0 LAC     0.378 mg/dL    0000\
    18:33:23 02/10/10 28.32             0 GLU       102 mg/dL    0000
    that is being read from the serial port. From this I would like to take only columns 1,2,3,5,6 and write onto the .txt file.
    Can someone provide some pointers? I'm using Labview 6.1
    Thanks,
    Sukanya

    If you know what "charecters" you don't want it is pretty easy. A little more difficult when they are unwanted only in certain places in the string. There is a remove whitespace function in the string functions palette. There is also a search and replace function in the "additional string functions" subpalette, that can be set up to find all instances of a char and replace it with something else, an empty string if you want to just delete it/them from your string.
