Epson WF 320, via shared Windows printer: Filter failed

Hi,
I have an Epson WorkForce 320 printer shared via Windows. I installed it the easy way with Print & Scan, clicked on Windows, found my Windows computer, found the printer and then clicked on the Epson Workforce 320 series driver that came with Mountain Lion (ah yes, I'm on Mountain Lion by the way).
The thing is, that whenever I try to print, I get "Authentication failed" or "Stopped: Filter failed".
I even tried installing the printer via the web CUPS interface. Yes I did use the right smb:// url. I even tried the Gutenprint drivers via CUPS, all it did was blow EVERY sheets away from the printer haha. I laughed a good shot but still, I can't get the **** thing to print via Windows.
If I plug the printer in my Macbook Pro, it immediately appears and works flawlessly though.
Any ideas? Do not hesitate if you need any information.
Thanks!

  • Printing from MacBook to a shared Windows printer

I am having a great deal of dificulty setting up my MacBook to print to my shared windows printer. I have tried doing some reasearch on the web and have found a number of difierent atricles and I still could not get it to work.
I have also called apple support and they "can't" help because they think it's not an Apple issue. I'm not convinced.
I am running 10.4.6 and Windows XP, and my printer is a Brother HL 1430.
When I try to create a new printer on my MackBook, I click on the "More Printers" button and I select Windows Printing, Workgroup and I see the windows computer. I click on the windows machine and click Choose.
So far so good. I get a password authentication dialog box asking me to connect to the PC. I type in my account details and it is at this point that it fails.
I cannot seem to connect to the PC via this method. I am using the correct username and password - I have tried repeatedly, and I also tried setting up another account and that too failed. Both accounts were admin accounts.
When I try the username / password, I get an error informing me it cannot connect to the server with the provided username / password.
However, I do have file conectivity to the PC and I can access it's harddrive.
The strange thing is - I tried using no account name / password and it passed the authentication and I was able to see my shared printer. I set it up and it failed to print. I have since deleted this setting and I cannot replicate it. I dont understand why it rejects my account details and why it accepted blank account information, and why it no longer accepts the blank details.
I think something weired is going on here and Apple were unable to help.
I have tried using the Advanced settings via SAMBA - however, this too fails.
I am out of ideas and this is really bugging me - I have wasted over 3 hours and I still cannot print.
    Can someone please help!!
    Thanks.

Is your 'Brother' brand printer, compatible for BOTH Mac and PC? if so, it should/may have come with driver/installation software for both, (on opening the file, are thier/appear to be 2 set's of driver/instruction files).
If not, I would contact Brother at tech support, and ask if they have new/updated drivers, so the model will work on both PC's and Mac's. I'm running a 3rd party peripheral, that came with the above, i.e, 1 CD/driver installation file, 1 set is for Windows, 1 set for Mac, I installed it on both, and it's flawless.
The exception, I had to download new drivers for this to work w/ Win..ws XP with Service Pack 2, (it came with Mac drivers, and PC, but only for Win..ws XP, not Win..ws XP w/ Service Pack 2, hope this helps, and will watcgh for repost. GS

  • Cannot find shared windows printer with NEW macbook running leopard HELP!

I just bought a new Macbook this past week. Woo Hoo. I love everything about it with the exception of file sharing and printer sharing. I have a less than one year old pc running vista that is connected to a hp 1300 series all in one printer. I can not even find this printer anywhere on the mac. i have been able to connect to my pc server via the ip address and share files this way. I am at a loss and really have no knowledge of mac. it is really disheartening, as I had way less trouble setting up windows networks for my roommates in college.
Also, as a side helper, how can I setup a shared folder that can be accessed from both the mac and the pc. I would like something that I can set on the desktop of both in order to share files better and more efficiently than connecting to a server everytime I want to do this. Please help, and explain as if I am as stupid as I appear.
    Thanks.

Here are two articles that may help:
Mac OS X- Cannot locate a shared Windows printer.
Mac OS X 10.5- Compatibility with Windows-shared printers.

  • Adding a  shared Windows printer

I am attempting to add to my iMac G5 a shared Windows printer (a Canon i9900) via the Printer Setup Utility following Apple Support Document # 301397 instructions. The printer is connected to a PC (running Windows XP) via a USB cable. The iMac and PC are networked via a router. One of the last instructions (7) in the Apple Support Document # 301397, "Choose the appropriate PPD or printer driver from the Printer Model pop-up menu" leads me to select "Other" for the Printer Model since there is no i9900 printer in the list of printers offered. This, in turn, leads me to a "Choose a File" window, actually the HD directory where the user (me) is expected (I guess) to find the pertinent driver. I have a driver installer CD that accompanied the i9900 but there are no drivers which can be selected on that CD (only a driver installer). I can install the drivers using the installer program on the CD but that simply installs the i9900 printer as a local printer to the iMac.
So the question is: How do I find the "appropriate PPD or printer driver from the Printer Model pop-up menu" as Apple Support Document # 301397 instructs me to do? Or is there a better way to do this?

  • Print to a shared Windows printer

OK, here is a scenario that I hope someone can help me with. I teach at a university, and I have in my office an elderly PowerMac G4-450 which, by choice, I use instead of the shiny new Dell PC that my department has generously provided for me (I like iWork way better than MS Office).
The Mac, of course, can't be upgraded beyond Tiger, so I run 10.4.11. The PC has a local shared printer on a parallel port, so I can't plug it into the Mac, but would like to be able to print to it from the Mac. So here is the problem: the print setup menu on Tiger does not allow you to specify a Windows domain, only a Workgroup. The PC is part of a domain, so its shares don't show up on the Mac. I have no control or authority over the configuration of the PC, so I am stuck with a printer on my desk that I can't get to without transferring files around and messing with two computers constantly.
Does anyone know if there is some trick for accessing a shared Windows printer that is a member of a domain? Is there some third party app or driver or hack or something that might make this printer visible from the Mac?

http://www.ifelix.net/tech/ has some hints on sharing printers between various flavors of Windows and Mac; depends on the OSs in play as to whether they actually got a guide written for it or not. Maybe something there will help.
As a side note, if you have access to a fast enough Mac, that will take 10.5 and has a firewire port, you could hook up that older PowerMac to it via firewire, boot up the PowerMac 450 in target disk mode (hold down T key while booting up) and then from the faster Mac, install OS 10.5 onto the externally mounted hard drive now appearing on its desktop that is your PowerMac 450 hard drive. That's how I squeezed 10.5 onto an old 2002 Quicksilver G4/800 computer a few years back.

  • Problems Printing to Shared Windows Printer Via SAMBA (foomatic error 255)

I can NOT print from my MacBookPro to a printer that's shared out from my Windows PC. Of course, printing to this same printer from my PC works fine.
Please help me resolve this printing problem.
Read on for more details regarding my printing woes!
I can successfully setup my printer on the MAC side using the Printer Setup utility. I see the shared out printer on my MAC; I can pick the printer's manufacturer and model. Everything looks ok regarding the setup of the printer on the MAC side.
However, when I try to print a file from the MAC, the printer never prints. The print job appears to get queued on the MAC side. However, after a few seconds, the printer queue displays "foomatic-rip stopped unexpectedly with error 255" (if I selected a foomatic printer driver from the hpijs). Otherwise, it says "NTSTATUS_NOMEMORY" error (if I selected a gutenprint driver instead).
The PC's Windows event logs show no problems. Indeed, the Security event log shows successful authentication & access to the printer.
The MAC's CUPS error_log displays the these error messages:
GutenPrint fails with NTSTATUS_NOMEMORY error, then says Cannot connect to SAMBA host
hpjisGhostscriptFoomatic fails with "The process 'foomatic-rip' stopped unexpectedly with status 255"
Later, I will post the exact entries from this log (I am currently separated from my MAC laptop until later this evening).
My Apple MacBookPro is running MAC OS X 10.4.11 ("Tiger"). The printer is an HP DeskJet 5150 connected via a USB port to my DELL 8400 PC. This desktop PC is running Microsoft's "Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2").
Based on reading other posts (here) and at the Linux Open Foundation (printing), I have already done the following:
    Installed gutenprint;
    Installed foomatic (foomatic-rip v3.42.2.15);
    Installed ghostscript (espgs v7.07.1); &
    Installed hpijs (hpijs v2.7.10).
NOTE: This is NOT the same problem that I posted earlier regarding inability to print to a shared printer with Leopard (MAC OS X 10.5.0). Today's posting deals with my inability to print to the shared printer from Tiger (MAC OS X 10.4.11).
NOTE: This may be a "red herring" but you may need this additional background to help resolve my printing problem. Originally, I ran "Tiger" (MAC OS X 10.4.10) on my MacBookPro laptop. Of course, networked printing worked fine at this point. On October 28, 2007, I upgraded to "Leopard" (MAC OS X 10.5.0). Leopard was a "disaster" for me (printing, networking & many other problems). On November 9, 2007, I "punted" and re-installed "Tiger" (MAC OS X 10.4.10) from Apple's original CD. On November 15, 2007, I upgraded to MAC OS X 10.4.11 via Apple's software update utility. I vaguely recollect that networked printing was working after I returned back to Tiger.

As promised in my initial post regarding my printing problem, here are the actual error messages displayed in the Print Queue (Hp5150) and the "cups" error_log when I try to print any file to my HP 5150 that's directly connected to my DELL PC (Windows XP Pro) but shared out so that my MacBookPro should be able to print to it.
    Printer Queue Hp5150 window displays:

    /var/log/cups/error_log displays:

Again, the system Event logs on the Windows XP side show no error messages. In particular, the Security Event Log shows that authentication was successful; so, the MacBookPro's client process was granted access to the printer on the DELL PC side of the transaction.

  • Problems Printing to Shared Windows Printer

After upgrading to Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5), I can no longer print to my HP DeskJet 5150 printer from my Apple MacBookPro laptop. This Deskjet printer is NOT directly connected to the laptop. Instead, it's directly connected to my Windows PC (via USB port). This printer is shared out from the Windows PC.
I see the following error messages in the Printer Queue display every time I try to print something to that Windows shared printer:
    "Connection failed: NTSTATUS_CONNECTIONREFUSED"
"Unable to connect to CIFS host, will retry in 60 seconds..."
In addition, every print attempt requires me to enter my Windows authentication credentials:
    userid (on my Windows PC)
    password (on my Windows PC)
I am absolutely sure that I have entered those credentials correctly. Yet, the error message above would seem to imply that Windows rejected my credentials for some reason. On the Windows side, the Security Event log entries appear fine (no corresponding failure gets logged when the print attempt fails).
Of course, my printing to the shared out from Windows PC WORKED FLAWLESSLY under "Tiger" (Mac OS X 10.4.x). My problem started immediately after I upgraded to "Leopard" (Mac OS X 10.5) on October 28, 2007.
Please advise me how to resolve this printing to a Windows shared printer problem.
    Thanks in advance,

I'm having the same problem. Sharing an HPLJ5MP on WinXPSP2 box, and printer sharing was working fine under Tiger. After installing Leopard, can see and set up printer, but attempts to print test page are thwarted. Log:

  • Print to Shared Windows Printer (PSC 1315)

I'm a Windows tech with a problem on my spanking new Intel MacBook.
I have a PSC 1315 connected via USB to an XP desktop PC.
I can print to the 1315 from the desktop with no problem.
Other Windows based PCs on my home network can print to it via a generic SBC router, which is handling network traffic and Internet access.
I have downloaded the OSX drivers for the PSC 1315 from the HP website and successfully loaded them onto the MacBook.
The HP Assistant that pops up asks me to add the HP printer that's either connected via USB or via IP. I have to bypass that setup. You'll see why below.
On the Mac I can not only see the folders that are shared from the desktop PC, but I can ALSO see the shared 1315 printer from across my wireless network. I can access shared files from the desktop on my Macbook.
So far, so good, right? Not.
I can't print to the PSC 1315 across my wireless network. All jobs go into a 'completed' mode but the printer never sees them. The driver that loads when I make the PSC 1315 my default printer on the Mac is 'generic postscript'. The PSC is not a postscript printer. I have scrolled down the list of HP printer drivers that are listed and can't find the PSC series listed anywhere. The HP drivers that I downloaded from the HP website for this printer are apparently only good for directly connected or print server-based PSC series printers - NOT for printers available as shared from an XP computer. In addition, the driver I downloaded from the HP website doesn't add itself to the large list of HP drivers that appear to be native to the Mac OS.
It gets better. I have Parallels loaded on the MacBook, with a copy of XP. When I fire up XP I can print to the PSC 1315 across my wireless network with absolutely no problem. Just like all of my other PCs and notebooks.
Back to the Mac OS side. I've discovered that one can access some sort of printer admin program using 127.0.0.1:631/printers. This is a 'CUPS' interface (I have no idea what CUPS is). I have tried to use this interface to further configure the PSC 1315 printer that shows up on that page, but to no avail.
I can only assume that the PSC 1300 series set of printers is just not designed to be accessible from a MacBook across a wireless network.
If anyone can dispute that I would love to hear about it. Until then, the only way I can print is if I fire up XP using Parallels when I want to print wirelessly.
Intel MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

For what it's worth, let me provide you some background and other ideas. As a Windows tech, you should be able to understand more why things might be failing with some basic background and other ideas.
I've discovered that one can access some sort of printer admin program using 127.0.0.1:631/printers. This is a 'CUPS' interface (I have no idea what CUPS is).
CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) is the printing system used in Mac OS X. It runs its own server which can be accessed on your localhost at <http://127.0.0.1:631>. Apple has made additions to the CUPS software as distributed by cups.org, so the web interface does not provide access to all the extras Apple has added.
CUPS is uses "front end" drivers and/or filters. The data to be printed is manipulated into a form that the particular printer can understand. This information is then handed off to the "backend" which handles the communication between the computer and the printer.
The HP drivers that I downloaded from the HP website for this printer are apparently only good for directly connected or print server-based PSC series printers - NOT for printers available as shared from an XP computer.
As you have found out the drivers HP supplies are limited and will only work when the printer is connected in certain ways. This is a limitation set by HP, not the Mac OS or the CUPS printing system. For whatever reason, the major printer manufacturers have essentially bypassed CUPS. They use just enough of it to direct the print job back to their own proprietary software. No real "frontends" and certainly none of the CUPS "backends" are used.
In order to print to a printer connected to a Windows computer, we must therefore turn to drivers that integrate with CUPS and can use the "smb" or samba backend that Apple provides. The hpijs and the Gutenprint (Gimp-Print) drivers fulfill this role.
At present there is not a specific PPD for the HP PSC 1315 in either package. That is most likely why the Generic PostScript PPD was assigned. The OS tries to match the manufacturer and printer model that the printer relays to the OS with a PPD that is exactly the same. When this fails, the system falls back to whatever default is specified in the software.
Does that mean that the PSC will absolutely not work? No. HP shows that the PSC 1315 is part of the 1300 series. A 1300 series PPD does exist within the hpijs driver set. It will show in the list of printers as "HP PSC 1300 Foomatic/hpijs". You can manually select this as your PPD.
I removed the driver (HP) anyway and downloaded the HPIJS set.
This is good. Did you also remove any HP files from the /Library/Printers/PPD Plugins directory? Please do if you have not already done so. You will have to kill off a number of processes before you are fully rid of these plug-ins. Perhaps the easiest way is to just restart the computer after you trash the PPD Plugins. It is important to be sure these are disabled. Just having the HP supplied drivers installed will most likely "tie up" the printer and make it unavailable to any other driver set. The PSC is an all-in-one machine. The HP software ties up the continuously looking for the command to start scanning.
Windows already is sharing the printer. I'm trying to connect to it over my wifi network.
I think Apple just doesn't support the PSC1315 that way.
Apple, just like Windows, doesn't "support" any particular printer. Nor do they write the drivers for them. Greg is more of an expert at Windows printing from a Mac than most of us. He can correct me if I am wrong, but I think all the necessary elements should be available to make your combination work. Make sure you have gotten rid of all or disabled the HP supplied software and try manually selecting the "HP PSC 1300 Foomatic/hpijs" printer within the context of the Windows printer sharing article Greg cited.
    Hope this helps.

  • Unable to print to shared windows printer (lexmark)

My Windows printer is shared on the network through an XP machine. Other XP PCs can see and print fine to the printer , but not my OS X (tried it with tiger and Leopard). The printer is Lexmark P6250, and the mac driver for that printer works fine because the printer works fine when it is directly connected to my mac via USB.
When looking for the printer through my MAC OS X, it can locate the printer on the windows network , no problem, but when I try to print anything from the mac to the windows network printer, Mac os x returns a communication error indicating that it cannot communicate with the printer. I have all firewalls on my windows PC disabled , and port 139 is open.
Can anyone help in resolving this problem ?

That is a limitation of the Lexmark drivers. There are no network capable drivers for this Lexmark printer either from Lexmark or from the open source developers. You can, however, print to the printer on the Windows comptuers by using a redirected printer as outlined in the following web page

  • Epson xp-202 will not print "Filter failed"

I am moving from SuSE to Arch - installed couple of days ago.  My epsonxp202 was working (well) under SuSE with 'drivers' downloaded late November.  The download now gives *different 'drivers', offering .rpm, .deb, dource (.src.rpm).
Cups finds printer (wirelessly) no probs, but attempting to print gives "Filter failed" message.  Log shows it to be the epson_inkjet_printer_filter supplied which gives the error :
[Job 15] PID 1469 (/opt/epson-inkjet-printer-201202w/cups/lib/filter/epson_inkjet_printer_filter) stopped with status 102 (No such file or directory)
    file command gives this output
/opt/epson-inkjet-printer-201202w/cups/lib/filter/epson_inkjet_printer_filter: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.8, not stripped
    And ldd gives
/usr/bin/ldd: line 116: /opt/epson-inkjet-printer-201202w/cups/lib/filter/epson_inkjet_printer_filter: No such file or directory
I have tried removing the compiled files and replacing with those extracted from rpm - no deal
Removed those and extracted everything from .deb, ran the preinst script, untarred the files and ran the postinst.
As an old (SysV) unix freak I am baffled.  After moving to the .deb version I got a complaint about /usr/share/cups/drivers/pscript5.dll not found - so I obtained this Win crap and stuck it there.  Back to same old problem.
Other forums suggest that this printer is fine with this set of 'driver' files.
N.B.  I *did* try copying over everything that the SuSE version appeared to be using without luck.
Has *anybody* an idea on how to make this printer function under Arch?  Xsane found and used the scanner side without any downloads or other inteervention.

    Fixed.
Thank you Misery.  As I am juust starting out with Arch I was unaware of PKGBUILD/makepkg system.  You have *greatly* enhanced my Arch experience.
I am, however, still puzzled as to why I got the 'file not found' message from ldd.  I checked dependencies with objdump and installed the one (old)libjpeg it wanted, but ldd still refused to run giving me 'file not found'!

  • Sharing Windows printer on PC with multiple users

I am sharing a printer attached to a Windows PC over a wireless home network. I added the printer to my mac (OS X) by using my windows uers id and password. However, the pc in question has another regular user. I want to configure the printer utility on the mac to recognise another Windows user and password in addition to the one already in the keychain. That way I can print from the mac whoever is logged onto Windows. I have tried to add it manually using the advanced options to add via SAMBA but that didn't work. Any sugggestions?

I worked this one out for myself. it doesn't matter which Windows user is logged on to the PC- the access to the printer still works. I was having problems because of the Norton firewall on the PC

  • Printing to a shared Windows printer

I can't seem to print to a shared Vista printer on my home network. I've scoured the Internet and this support site and have run into brick walls. According to the Apple web site: "Shared Windows printers automatically appear in the Mac OS X Printer Setup Utility so they can be added to the Macintosh as a local printer queue."
This isn't happening for me. When I bring up the Printer Setup Utility, I get the "Printer List". I click on "Add". I get the "Printer Browser". In the protocol selector, there are three protocols, none of which relate to Windows. So I click "More Printers..."
A secondary printer browser appears. I select "Windows Printing" in the top selector and "Home" (my Windows workgroup name) in the selector below that. I see three entries. These are the three computers on my home network (1 iMac, 2 Vista PCs). There are no printers.
There should be one printer, but there isn't. And that's the roadblock. I can access the shared folders on the computers in the network from my MacBook Pro and the Vista computer with no local printers can print to the shared Vista printer.
At work, I can print from this MacBook to a printer that is served by a Windows server of some kind. But on my home network, my iMac, my MacBook Pro, and my son's PowerBook are all equally unable to detect and print to the shared Vista printer. I should add that when the two Windows computers were running WinXP, the same problem existed.
My gut tells me that there is one tiny setting on either the PC or the Macs isn't set right. If anyone can enlighten me, I would be forever grateful.
    Thanks,
    Mike

I have a similar problem trying to network two Macs and a PC for printer and file sharing. I too have the nagging feeling that there's one simple setting somewhere that would cure the problem. I posted a query a week ago (4/21) and got a response from iFelix who directed me to web pages he's posted with step-by-step instructions on setting up Macs and PCs for printer and file sharing:
Sharing files between an XP PC and a Mac running OS 10.4.x
    http://tech.ifelix.net/3020.html
Printing to a printer on a XP PC from a Mac running 10.4.x
    http://tech.ifelix.net/3015.html
Printing to a printer on a Mac from a PC running Windows XP
    http://tech.ifelix.net/3000.html
The instructions didn't solve my problem but perhaps they will yours.

  • Issues printing on shared Windows printer

I'm trying to print on an HP LaserJet 1020 shared by a Windows XP computer. I shared the printer on XP, found it on the Mac, and added it as my default printer. (using the generic Postscript driver) When I hit Print on TextEdit, the document chugs for a moment and is sent over. Sometimes I'm asked for login credentials, which I supply. On the PC, I can see a "Remote Downlevel Document" in the print queue.
But that's where it stops -- the document never comes out. I don't see any error messages on either side, the document is just stuck in the queue. I've tried restarting all computers and printers, but nothing seems to make it happy.
    What can I try next?

I had to set up a Unix printer server on my XP with the printers. After following the directions I had to change some of the printer settings ports - was pretty easy to set up and worked for me. The link has directions to set up xp printer.

  • Print from MAC to shared Windows printer

    Hi,
Have a new imac and was wondering how I go about printing from the mac to the shared printer connected to my windows xp computer. I have been able to connect to a shared folder on the xp machine.
    Many thanks.

I found a solution that worked for me.
When it was suggested to me by my brother-in-law (who's a Linux freak) that I use an open-source third-party application, I was skeptical; however, after perusing some articles around the Web, and following their instructions, I discovered the ol' boy actually knows what he's talking about.
In my situation, the problem was not with the network connectivity, nor even the Windows machine not wanting to play nice (my first suspicion), but rather the printer driver that came with Snow Leopard.
Details: I was trying to print from my iMac (OS X 10.6.2 Snow Leopard) to a Canon MP500 that was on my wife's Windows XP computer. My iMac saw her computer (and vice versa) and they even played well together, which should have alerted me that it wasn't the networking that was the problem, but the printer driver.
Anyways...I hope this will help someone else out. Check out the following link, and follow his leads. The article is a couple years old, but the info is still pertinent, and the links are still good. I just printed a full document to that Windows printer with no problem.
