Epub for iPad

When preparing an epub for the iPad what is the correct way to get size of text to be smaller or larger. Should that be done using h1, h2, tags etc. or should that be set in the css using the font-size property.
One other question: Does anyone know of a good program to edit xhtml tags? For example, if I want to change a <p> tag to <h1>.

h1 and h2 tags -- and probably all HTML tags -- come with some more luggage, apart from the size. These two, for example, are bold by default; from h3 on (or perhaps it was h4), they are italic. Depending on the browser (which is, for me, an unknown quantity of the iPad), it also might have more or less space above and below, keep its lines together, etc.
If you want exact control over font sizes, use css exclusively. Exact control, by the by, is not limited to having to express every (or even any) size in points or pixels. You can express everything in percentages, as in: this header should be 120% of the main font size. This has the advantage the user can scale his view up and down at will.
There are roughly three approaches, and you can mix and match whatever you desire:
1. Shun everything from HTML; use only 'plain' paragraphs, and modify them using classes in your CSS.
2. Use whatever HTML has for its intended purpose, but modify the elements to your liking. Beware, as some browsers assign more 'default' attributes to these element than others.
3. Use plain HTML. It might sound silly, but it does mean the user has full control over his system. Again: don't know for the iPad, but both Safari and Internet Explorer allow a default CSS to style otherwise unstyled HTML.
I think this covers the basics. How the epub viewer in the iPad is implemented? No idea. Do you have one to play around with?

  • Can I use Indesign to create an ePub for iPad with expandable images?

Hello everyone!  I'm creating a book for iBooks on the iPad.  It is a basic book that has short chapters of text with pictures. Reading Terry White's, the Adobe evangelist, blog I saw that his attempt with InDesign seemed straight forward, without a need for html skills (which I don't have.)  So I would make the investment in InDesign if it is suitable.
BUT! I would like to add an extra feature that I have seen in some iBooks: When  you double-tap an image the text disappears and the image expands and  fills the page. And when you double-tap the image again it goes back to  normal. Can this be done in InDesign? How?
    I'd appreciate any help.
    Thank you!

Size your image so that the longest dimension is 1024 pixels.
Screen size of iPad is 1024 x 768.
In iBooks, when a user double-taps on an image, iBooks will open the image in full-screen view and scales the image to its largest dimension.
In normal book view, iBooks displays all images at their maximum size unless they're larger than the iBooks page, in which case they are displayed to the max width or height of the page (until double-tapped on).
You can constrain the image size in iBooks with certain HTML coding. (Unlike other epub display software and devices, iBooks ignores CSS height and width instructions unless you make specific use of a <div> tag.)

  • Videos in ePub for iPad

Videos work (horizontal or vertical) in regular xhtml files declared in spine. But when I try putting them in a 'linear="no"' declaration, they are only positioned correctly in landscape.
Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone have a solution (other than not using a 'linear="no"' declaration)?
    Thanks

    Some things to consider:
    1. Centering and space above and below your div can be accomplished in CSS with:
    div.group {
    width:50% !important;
    margin-top: 1.0em;
    margin-bottom: 1.0em;text-align: center;}
There might be other and better ways to accomplish this. I'm not expert in CSS or HTML; I only know what has worked for me in previous projects.
    2. In iBooks, there is a bug (or "feature") that causes iBooks to ignore text-align for some elements (such as <p>) if iBooks' preferences are set to Full Justification = ON. Instead of being centered, those elements will be left-aligned (or maybe justified? I haven't tested.) This is the default setting, so most users likely leave it that way. (<h> elements are not affected by this bug.)
This is detailed in one of Liz Castro's blog posts and also on Walt Shiel's blog:
    http://www.pigsgourdsandwikis.com/2010/06/beating-ibooks-bugs.html
    http://waltshiel.com/2010/06/23/one-solution-to-ibooks-1-1-centering-problem/
One fix is to wrap the text inside such an element in empty <span> tags.
    3. I don't know what your intended audience is, but keep in mind that iBooks is way behind Amazon and BN.com in terms of sales volume. Kindle and Nook don't support resizing images (yet, anyway), so unless your book depends on this photo treatment to deliver its message, you might be putting a lot of time and effort into a feature that few readers (yet, anyway) can take advantage of.
    4. If you use Twitter, you might want to follow the hashtag #eprdctn -- it's used by a small community of ebook designers to exchange information about the constantly changing ebook design world.

  • Create interactive epub for web

Hi, I understand that we can create epubs for ipads like this with inDesign: https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/tutorials/video/build-single-issue-magazine-ipad.ht ml
I would like to create an interactive annual report to be published on a website. Similar concept as the the above, but not for ipad, only for web.
Please let me know if this is possible and are there any tutorials?
    Thank you in advance!

    Thank you for your replies!
What would be the best solution to create a pdf (with clickable images etc) to be embedded into a website?

  • IBooks Author for iPad, ePub for iPhone?

I understand iBooks Author creates books ONLY for iPad.
So what happens If i want the book I am working on for iPhone as well? ... Do I create 2 versions:
iPad - iBooks Author Multi-Touch edition
    iBooks - Standard ePub version
Is there a way for me to state the iBooks version to ONLY show up for iPhone and iPod Touch .... ? So I am effectivly putting on 2 different books ...
    Thanks,
    Ben

At this time, beyond the categories you can choose from in iTunes Producer/Assets, how you describe your app is basically up to you Apple will let you know if they disagree.
The Yellow Submarine book is epub and available for both iPhone and iPad....you may want to take a look at it for ideas, etc.
As always, feel free to use the 'Provide iBooks Author Feedback' menu item for features you'd like added in the future, etc.

  • IBooks Author app for iPad?

Is iBooks Author available as an app for iPad or only for laptop/desktop?

There are a number of apps available from the Apple app store which enable eBooks to be created on an iPad. They are obviously not as interactive or as functional as iBA, although Book Creator which I have used creates ePub files.
Unlike iBA, most of the content needs to be prepared outside the app and inserted. There are quite a few such applications so you would need to evaluate each against your needs.
Pages is available for iPads so I assume that it will produce ePubs as it does on Macs.
If your ambitions for creating eBooks to distribute via the iBookstore, iBA is the best application currently available although InDesign seems to be the choice of those creating "novels" with minimal illustration.
I do not have any connection in any way with any of the apps other than as a user.

  • I want to create an eBook for iPad , Mac and "iPhone".

While I was beginning with creating an eBook with iBookAuthor, I didn't know that the target group iPhone user is missed.
I want to create and publish an eBook, which is intended for iPad, Mac and iPhone users.
Does somebody know, which software would be the best?

I 've tested it, the program doesn't accept ePub files.
Of course iTunes Producer is supposed to accept .epub files.  If yours are not working, I suggest you try to contact Apple via the means indicated at the bottom of the FAQ

Also you could post your specific issue, with any error messages, in the forum for epub issues:

  • Need guidance for ePubs for iBooks

I'm a professional formatter and have converted files to ePubs for several years. Now some of my clients want to upload directly to iBooks with an Author account. Since I'm a PC person I don't work with MACs although I myself have an Apple account (I have an iPad and iPhone). Lately several clients have gotten stopped at the upload because Apple says that the file they are trying to upload has spaces (that's the way my conversion software saves ePubs). So my question, should I be sending my clients special ePub files for iBooks with new space-less file names? It's not a problem, I just need to know to do this. All of my ePubs are validated through IDPF.

I found this at p. 46 of the iBookstore asset guide:
"All characters in the URIs must be valid with non-alphanumeric characters properly encoded (e.g., space should be encoded as '%20'). This problem most often surfaces in URIs in the NCX files and is due to spaces included in filenames. "
Via an account at iTunes Connect, you can normally get all the various guides produced by Apple regarding books (BookProoferUserGuide, iBookstore - Publisher User Guide, iTunesConnect_Publisher UserGuide)

  • Can I create books for the iBookstore for iPad and iPhone using Pages?

Can I create books for the iBookstore for iPad and iPhone using Pages?

No problem, Peter. iBooks Author makes a lot of things much easier than trying to grapple with a standard epub, but it also has some big limitations, like iPad only, and ibookstore only.
EDIT It's not really suitable for something like a novel, for example, although it's great when you need lots of illustrations and movies and such.

  • Looking for All-In-One Sudoku Game App for iPad?

Bare with me...  I'm going to learn now if this is an appropriate question here and if not where to go that would be appropriate?
I'm looking for a great iPad Sudoku game app that offers a variety of different format variations using numbers 1-9, different colors, and different shapes--that sort of thing...instead of just the common numbers.  I'm not concerned about scoring the game or tracking time or the leaderboard stuff.
I've looked and found a gillion to consider including Google and looked at some for more detail but so far have found none...and maybe none exist or maybe I'll have to settle for two or three separate Sudoku games to fullfill what I'm after?
So maybe someone in the community knows of just the Sudoku app I'm looking for?
    Thank you.

A quick Google search provided the following:  http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sudoku-hd-for-ipad/id364909963?mt=8
I don't know if it offers exactly what you want, but you can check the App Store, or you can go to Google and type the following in your search bar:  apple sodoku app ipad
    Several options will come up.

  • Logical symbols in pages for IPad? Asking for help

I have a new IPad and I would like to define logical symbols on my keyboard (just like ą, ę and so on). Is there some way to do it and to use it in PAGES for IPad? I would prefer to have few math symbols defined directly under some bottoms and not to use copy/paste. (I tried to find in Pages for IPad some special characters, but there are no such things, perhaps it is possible to add it?) I have also small separated keybord (perhaps this could be somehow used...?)

Afraid you cannot define custom characters for any keyboard in the iPad. What accented characters there are can be shown by holding the appropriate letter down.

  • My rue la la app for ipad suddenly dosent work so I deleted it now when I try to reinstall it the app store says that it not available in the us. It is still on my Iphone and working properly. What is this all about?

My rue la la app for ipad stopped working. I deleted the app and tried to reinstall it,  it is no longer available in the app store and when I research it on safari and find it when i try to install it says that it is not available in the us store. What is that all about?

My app did the exact same thing. It is still unavailable on the App Store and when Rue La La's site directs you to download their app, the "not available in the U.S. message appears. This happened to me last night. The app wasn't working, I deleted it and was just going to reinstall but was unable to find the app. I figured it was some glitch but I have tried multiple times this afternoon to no avail.

  • Cox BUSINESS Email Setup for iPad

I have a *Cox Business* internet account (business accounts are *different from* residential accounts - different servers, etc) with a static ip address and I cannot send email from my iPad via wi-fi Airport network. (Wi-Fi only iPad, not 3G.)
There was a time when I had it working, but a simple one sentence email would take over 10 minutes to send. It was odd. Now it's not sending at all.
My incoming email is through my business email account (via GoDaddy) and it works well. No issues.
Currently, the outgoing settings on my iMac work great for my iMac, but don't seem to translate to the iPad. These iMac setting are:
    *iMac Outgoing Email Settings:*
    Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smarthost.coxmail.com
    Custom port: 25
    Authentication: none
*iPad Outgoing settings* that previously worked (sort of):
    Host name: smarthost.coxmail.com
    User: blank
    Pass: blank
    Use SSL: Off
Authentication: MD5 Challenge-Response (it will NOT set to password - will not "stick" or save on exit)
    Server Port: 587
    +Any help would be appreciated.+

I had actually written a message previously that I just deleted explaining that what you had written doesn't work. I've tried it several times and it made no difference.
Then, I did something that I have not attempted or noticed:
I reset the outgoing cox settings to match my iMac settings listed above (that previously would not work), BUT in the order of listed outgoing servers my mobileme outgoing server (which actually works for outgoing MobileMe emails; don't know why) was listed first in the Primary slot.
It was "On" and I turned it "off" leaving only my cox outgoing settings turned on and it is in the secondary/backup slot. I then sent a test email and it worked just fine.
So the answer is that the settings for ipad outgoing cox business email are the same as your mac/computer, but do not have your MobileMe outgoing server turned on and, for some reason, do not have the cox server set in the primary slot. For example, if I put the cox server in the primary slot then it doesn't work anymore. Weird.
If you do not have MobileMe then I'm not sure what to say, but I have tried these settings with cox being the only outgoing server in the primary slot and it did not work... For me.
