Epub problem....

i have downloaded books in pdf format and converted it into epub but while i try to import in itunes it say that "itunes doesnot support .epub extension" i have tried everything but still cannot solve it?
i have coverted pdf into epub by calibre and also i use itunes in windows operating system

Do you use the latests versions of Calibre (1.12) and latest version of iTunes (11.1.3) ?
Then did you purchase your ebook on PDF on Kindle or Apple iTunes Store ?  If so, you file is very likely to be copy protected with DRM.
Even If PDF cannot have the tidy up look and feel of epub, it is still having less problèmes with covers while importing in iTunes.
iTunes is lacking into classifying, categorizing, sorting and importing files ebook speaking.
You have to handle it through fields designed for audio and video files event if ebooks aren't designed for ID3 tags.
Anyway, try to update to latest Calibre version (get it from a known and thrustable source (Sourceforge) because a lot of malware is spreading around on the net.
Keep updating the post for follow up please !

  • Exporting CS5 to epub problem

Exporting CS5 to epub and last chapter is missing. Anyone ever see this? Thanks!

    Hi Bob and Happy 4th!
    Thanks for replying.
I'm exporting the file, and everything works great and looks great. Have made first level new chapters, and each is now separate xhtml file.  toc looks good. Only thing is the last chapter is not included (although the glossary after that is). If I rearrange the order of the chapters the one now in the last position doesn't make it to the epub. My guess is there is a limit on length or size, but from what I've read that shouldn't be a problem with numerous xhtml files in this version.
    Thanks!

  • Fixed layout ePub problem with facing pages

    Hi,
I have a 240 page book made out of multiple inDesign files that I'm trying to convert to a fixed layout ePub. Everything works like a charm except the transition from one file to the next.
The book uses facing pages setting so when the file ends for example in page 40, it is a left hand page, and the next file starts from page 41 and that is a right hand page. After exporting to fixed layout epub, the resulting file has blank pages between the files. What I mean is after the left hand page 40 there is an empty right hand page, then an empty left hand page followed by right hand page 41.
What would be the easiest solution for this?

    Hi,
I found the problem from the book panel so case closed. In "Book Page Numbering Options" I had "Insert Blank Page" selected. This didn't cause any problems when exporting to pdf but resulted in extra blank pages when exporting to ePub.
Attached is a screenshot from the book panel. The problem occurred between all the files.

  • Syncing epub problems

It should be simple to click on the books (epubs) that you want to sync then click sync, but on my iPad the Sync button turns into the two "revert" and "apply" buttons when I highlight the new book I've just imported... if I click on Apply it asks if I want to delete some apps, and of course I say no... Anyone else had this issue or can help?
    Thanks
    Greg

First: The "apply" (and "revert) button appears (instead of the "sync" button) when you've changed sync settings - it is even enough to tick (put the check mark in the little box) 1 book that wasn't ticked before to get "apply" instead of "sync" as button.
Second: the message about deleting comes when you have unticked some books that were ticked before. It only means they will be deleted from iPad but stay on your computer. You can always sync them again when you tick them.
Syncing works in a way that you not only tick the new books you want to sync, but also leave every book ticked which is already synced to your iPad. That means iTunes will keep everything the way it was and only add the new books. But if you only tick the new books, iTunes thinks you don't want to sync the old books anymore and will remove them from your iPad. That of course also goes for music, movies etc.

  • Export photos to Fixed Layout Epub problem

When I try to export an inDesign file to a fixed layout ePub3 format every photo brightens a little in mid-shadow areas. All my images are in sRGB color space. Does anyone know why this is happening?
    Thanks.

This may not be a good test, but I took the picture you posted (the one from Indesign) and tested it and don't see a lot of difference. First Indesign, second ibooks. Is your monitor calibrated? What type is it?

  • InDesign CS5.5 EPUB export not showing cover image in Adobe Digital Editions

I have a document that I am trying to ensure is reflecting the cover image prior to uploading to several EPUB sites like google and Barnes and Noble. I am using Adobe Digital Editions, Calibre, Firefox (EPUBReader) to do the troubleshooting on the document. Calibre shows the cover image Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) does not. Are their any known problems with ADE not reflecting the cover image that I need to be aware of before I continue working on this?
The ADE help says the following:
"Once the items are in your library, there are two ways to view the content of any bookshelf. You can view thumbnails of your items. The thumbnail is the cover page of the item (or just the first page if it doesn't have a cover page). In this view, you see the set of thumbnails and some information about each item (author, title). You can also sort the order in which the items are shown by author, title, date created, number of pages, and so forth."
Here is basic informaiton. I have a cover page in my export to EPUB but ADE will only show the first page. Again Calibre shows the cover page.
    CS 5.5
The project is a book (indb) composed of multiple documents (indd)
Exporting as book as an EPUB
On general tab I am "Use existing image"
I am rasterizing the first image in Indesign via the "Object - Object export options" but I am not selecting that option when on the general tab of the Export to EPUB options. I am chosing a file from my disk. I thought that maybe the file name was too long but I changed the image to "cover.jpg" and reexported it but it still does not work.
Here are the contents of the content.opf file with all the pointers. I have updated the file as I believe you can tell with guides, creation date, etc....
    It passes the SIGIL check.
The image name is Democracy in Business Dust Jacket 300dpi.jpg. It is 300 dpi and 1650 x 2550. I could also cut in the one that I did for cover.jpg but it only replaces the file name.

I have also been trying to get this cover image to display on PC for NOOK but it appears that everyone is having hits problem too. I have followed some trouble shooting guides and renamed the jpg image, Democracy in Business Dust Jacket 300dpi.jpg to cover.jpg but that doesn't seem to work either for NOOK.
Any help you can give would be appreciated. I am new to InDesign (I know you probably hate hearing that, but I have gotten so close to being done overcoming all the new user hurdles). I think this is my last one before uploading to the appropriate sites - PS. I got the cover page to show up on the Kindle but not Adobe's own product.
    Thanks

ebookjunkie, I have just used InDesign to publish two very short "books" (.99 cent variety) and started this thread with the first question. Look to Bob for the expert advice. This is neophyte advice from someone moving from publishing a full book using Word to EPUB/Kindle and now using InDesign to publish to EPUB/Kindle.
First ADE is useless. I say this out of frustration of trying to use it to troubleshoot problems and it has so many problems in displaying an EPUB that you spend a lot of time troubleshooting ADE issues rather than EPUB problems. The problems are not limited to but won't display a cover page properly, text wrapping is iffy, Drop caps a problem, bringing over supported items like drop caps, all small caps, etc.... are also issues as best I can tell. Humble opinion is delete off your desktop. I use the following to troubleshoot my EPUB's/Kindle books on my Windows platform; Calibre, Barnes and Noble's Nook for PC and iPhone iTunes for EPUB (Sigil to look for errors); and for Kindle, Kindle previewer and Kindle for the PC. Even after doing this, I just today saw my book a buyer's Android "Reader" and the pictures did not display at all. So it is publish once and test everywhere! Unfortunately, you just can't test all the possible devices and iterations of readers. (I am from IBM and we couldn't do it, so how publishers are supposed to figure it out is beyond me!)
On the absolutely great news end, you will see a lot of problems about placing images on the iPad with a lot of workarounds. They apparently (Apple) have fixed this as my two publications show images nicely now on both the iPhone and iPad with the iTunes bookshelf/reader. They were "microdots" when viewed previously. I did nothing to fix it and was just not going to publish to the iPAd and just tested them a few weeks ago and they display perfectly. So Apple has fixed the problem. If it looks good on the Nook for PC, it should look good on the iPAD/iPhone now as best I can tell.
    Cheers

  • External Hyperlink behavior in iBooks ePub created with iWork Pages

I am new at ePup publishing. I'm  using iWork pages and exporting to ePub.  Things were going great until........
I started playing with the hyperlinks in my ePub book in iBooks. I am doing this with an iPad and an iPod Touch. I'm in iBooks, I click on the link, the Safari browser opens and displays the page.  As far as I know, I have to close the browser window to get back to the book. I do this by pressing the home button on the device. Now I have a blank screen. I have to open iBooks again to get back to the book.
This is a bunch of work for the reader of my book, I want them to see a bunch of images. this is awful. It is not acceptable.
Is this an ePub problem or an iBook reader problem? My guess is iBooks but I'm not sure
The system should have the facility to look at the external page within iBooks and press an X button to close it so the reader can continue reading.
So now I'm thinking I will need to go back and insert all the images in my book.  I think I will proceed to do this once I know for sure there is no better course of action.
Smart and knowledgeable people, please tell me, is there a better way to let my reader see images without a bunch of button pressing?

iBooks only syncs purchased books. Others must be synced in iTunes.

  • Problem for export

I have a problem. When I want to export the document, there is always this message: Can not open the file,, untitled - 1.epub,, adobe indesign May not support the file format and plug-in that supports the file format May be missing, or the File May Be open in another application.
Before I did not have this problem and when I exported some document, it was opened in Adobe Digital Editions. I do not really know whether I have done something wrong or what is the problem. Could You please give me an advise how to reset it or how can I repair it?
    I have CS5.5 7.5.2 Windows.
    Many thanks for help!

I don't do ePub, so I'm not really qualified to troubleshoot most epub problems, but if this just started to happen, I think there's a chance it might be fixed by repalcing your prefs. See Replace Your Preferences

  • Problems with epub 3 and iBooks 2

Problems with fixed layout epub 3 and iBooks version 2
I am producing an epub 3 fixed layout ebook. My query is whether there is a known issue with epub 3 and the old version of iBooks - iBooks 2.
The epub has passed verification with epubcheck 3.0.1 and I have viewed the file on my iPad with iBooks 3.2 as well as on iBooks on my Mac, and also through the Chrome browser using Readium. In all cases the layout is fine. But when the file is downloaded onto an old iPad using iBooks 2, the layout is all mixed up. The iPad says that its operating system of OS.5 is up-to-date , and will not allow it to be updated, and thus it's impossible to update iBooks to versions 3.
So my question is whether this is a known issue with fixed layout epub 3 and versions 2 of iBooks, and if so whether there is a work around to allow fixed layout epub 3 to be read on iBooks2.

Follow-up query: (apple-ibooks-display-options) file needed in epub 3??
I tried adding the old (apple-ibooks-display-options) file to the META INF folder, as you used to for fixed layout epub 2, and the file displayed perfectly on the older version of iBooks, as well as on the latest iBooks. This leads me to ask whether you still need to add the 'apple-ibooks-display-options' file to epub 3, to make them readable on old versions of iBooks, or whether this indicates that some of the settings stating this is pre-paginated etc. are not entered correctly in the content.opf file, but I have checked this and I don't think so.
Any advice on this would be very welcome.

  • Problems with ePub and Kindle

I have published about 35 eBooks on Kindle.  I've followed their online directions; I've used Apple's "ePub Best Practices for Pages."  Everything looks fine on the "Preview" function while publishing in Kindle; everything looks fine on Amazon after publishing.
It was only after I had published all those books, and months after the fact, that Kindle contacted me:
"1.  One or more links in your Table of Contents do not work.  The Table of Contents isn't accessible from the "Go To" menu in your book.
    2.  Text in your book is unreadable for readers using color devices and reading on a black background.  This may have occurred due to forcing the font color to black in your source file. To correct this issue, please remove all forced formatting from your font."
Next they gave me these instructions:
    "For the Beginning:
Place the cursor where you want the book to start, click on “Insert > Bookmark.” In the "Bookmark name:" field, type “Start” (without the quotes) and click "Add."
    For the Table of Contents:
Place the cursor at the beginning of the first entry in the Table of Contents. Click on “Insert > Bookmark.” In the "Bookmark name:" field, type “TOC” (without the quotes) and click "Add.""
After waiting a week they sent me this:
"Our technical team suggest you remove the font setting of black, and ensure your EPUB's font is "automatic". This will resolve the issue and any font color which has been hard-coded."
I'm really frustrated, partly because they waited until after I had published all of my books to let me know there were problems; and partly because I don't quite understand the problems and am a bit lost on how to fix them.  I guess I was mistaken in thinking I could use Apple's "ePub Best Practices for Pages" as a template for all the books, and upload them into Kindle.
The instructions they gave me for the TOC problem seem clear enough: in your experience, is this what I need to do to fix each of the books?
I tried to figure out the second one (black vs. automatic font setting), and was unsuccessful.
    Can you help?
    Thank you.

Have you also tried the Kindle forums?  Apple's instructions are of course geared to producing books for iBooks, not other companies' ebooks readers.

  • IOS 6.0.1 and iBook 3.0.1 - problems with interactive epub

My iPad 2 was recently updated wtih IOS 6.0.1 and iBook 3.0.1. After the recent update some of my interactive epub files are not working properly. Mainly slideshows, working fine earlier, where I have used jquery and javascript. Does anyone know why? Is there a bug in the updates. Thanks for helping me out of this problem.

    LadyAce
Did you see a release note on it somewhere or did you find out through your own experience with it?
Since it was a quietly released 13.3 I am curious what it fixed officially. According to the release notes from Apple with 6.0.1 it did not make any mention that it was patching the data leaking when using WiFi and cell data. I have been working on a book that is about 250 pages long in print format, with about 350 photographs that illustrate the text, which is a guide to the use of a particular digital camera model. After watching Anne-Marie Concepcion's course at Lynda.com and also using the book by Sandee Cohen and Diane Burns, Digital Publishing with Adobe InDesign CC, I was able to export the book successfully in ePub and mobi formats. The ePub looks fine in iBooks and the mobi looks fine in the Kindle apps. But I have not been able to get the images to appear properly when I preview the ePub for the Nook. I have tried every combination of export and conversion settings I could think of, but the images either look too large and distorted as if squeezed, or, if I use the CSS Size-Fixed option, the images look tiny, much too small to see details (though they will expand if clicked on).  I eventually uploaded it through Nookpress.com to see if their conversion would help, but the book recently went on sale there, and when I downloaded it to check, the images did not appear at all. The same thing happens when I use the Preview function at the nookpress.com site; the screen shows broken link icons for all images.
I cannot think of anything else to do.  Can anyone provide me with any suggestions for how to proceed, short of hiring an expert?  Most of the images are 1800 pixels wide and roughly 1200 pixels tall in the InDesign document, with a resolution of 600 ppi. As noted above, I have tried all different combinations of the Use Existing Image for Graphic Objects, Preserve Appearance from Layout, CSS Size-Fixed, CSS Size Relative to Text Flow, and others, with no success.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Here is a link to a Dropbox folder that has the file I uploaded to Nook Press. In this one, the images don't show up all:  Dropbox - Panasonic Lumix LX100 Version for Nook

Okay, thanks. That was helpful. I ran the file though Epubcheck and it did find various errors.  I have replaced that file with another file that does not result in errors, but does generate a lot of warnings, all about having image file names with spaces in them. I'm assuming that's not what is causing the problem with the way the images display.  The file that is in the Dropbox folder now is one that does show the images, but they appear distorted and too large when viewed on the Nook app on my Nexus tablet, but they look fine when viewed in iBooks on my Mac. Dropbox - Panasonic Lumix LX100 Version for Nook  I'm hoping there is some general information available about how to format images in an ePub so they will display properly on the Nook.

  • Problems previewing InDesign CS5.5 exported EPUBs in Apple iBooks, on an iOS device.

I have EPUB Creation problems when I use my InDesign CS 5.5 document from my first EPUB book, as a template to create my other two EPUB books.
My customer gave me a job that forced me to learn how to do EPUBs – and I'm still learning.  I created three books in Design CS 5.5, for fixed page PDF, with interactive table of contents and for exporting to a regular EPUB, with auto-reflow formatting and automated table of contents. These books were not created for print.
After I created the first one and successfully exported to an EPUB, that previewed fine in free Adobe Additions, I used the first InDesign CS 5.5 document as a template to create the other two publications.  These books were around a hundred pages, or less, with little or no placed jpeg images except on the three books' covers, so I did not create a Book.indb for each publication.  Each book is completed in single InDesign files with their own unique front cover art on their first page.
When my customer previewed the three books on his iPad, in iBooks, all three books show the cover of the first book, when you see them on the iBooks library shelf.  Then when you open them, you see the correct cover for that specific book and the correct interior pages.
When I open each InDesign file and open the File Information tabbed dialog, I have a different document title entered for each of the three different books.  When I export to EPUB, the EPUB Export Option dialog pops up and I have selected "Include Document Metadata."  I entered the Publisher name and a separate Unique Identifier for each book, when I export.
After I emailed the three EPUBs to my iPod Touch, all three showed up in my iBooks library but when you see them on the library shelf they have the first book's cover on all three.  So I have a redundant cover preview on the library bookshelf icons, in the iBooks app, running in Apple iOS.
I have two books by Elizabeth Castro about Creating EPUBs with InDesign.  I'm going to read them some more, especially the part about preparing your EPUB for Apple iBooks, on iOS.  But, I thought I would share my problem here to see if anyone has a solution for me.  Thanks.

I often end up answering my own questions but I will do so again, this time, so that others can learn.  When you are exporting to EPUB in InDesign CS 5.5, an EPUB Export Options diolog appears.  Under "EPUB Cover," select "Use Existing Image file" and choose the actual file that was used on on the first page of the InDesign document, for the new book's cover.
This feature can cause inbedded human error if you use a completed Indesign book as a template to create other books because even though you placed a new cover at the beginning of the book, the Export options still has the cover file selected for the previous book you worked on.
I actually got the answer to my problem with the InDesign Help Menu, when InDesign CS 5.5 is launched.

  • Problem with pictures in pages 5 and epub

    Hello,
I have been using pages 09 to make epubs for the last 6 months with happy results.
My new macbook pro came in the mail and I have some problems.
I have figured out how to do all the text formatting, including titles/chapter names, etc. on pages 5.
    My problems is with pictures.
In the past, I would click view, then show invisibles, so I could see where the chapter marks are to insert my picture in a particular spot.
The old pages, was great, and the pic showed up right where I wanted it, and that was the end of the story.
New Pages, just throws the picture on the page and then forces me to select a variety of options as far as telling it how I want the picture to display.
This would be no big deal if I only had one or two pics to deal with, but I have tons of pics that need to be inserted in pages and exported to epub.
Does anyone know an easy way to tell pages 5 to just put the picture where I am telling it!
    Any advice would be appreciated.
Also, one negative on pages 09 is that you could only have a certain amount of pics/chapter, otherwise they would not show up in the exported epub.
Anyone know if pages 5 suffers from the same absurdity or if you can insert as many pics as you want/chapter.

Ok, I understand what you guys are saying.
    A related issue.
I had been using pages 4.1.
When I would take a pic plucked from a pdf and put it into pages and then exported to epub, it compressed the file about 80% like it should.
I ditched pages 5 and went to pages 4.3 (which looked identical to my old pages 4.1.
For whatever reason when I take the same pdf pic and put it into pages and export to epub, instead of compressing by 80%, it is actually expanding the file by 700%.
The original image is identical in both cases, but pages 4.3 doesn't compress upon export to epub.
    Any suggestions?
