EPub TOC problem.

I use Pages to create ePub books. The new Pages update adds a crudely-formatted, auto-numbered TOC at the beginning. I'm not a programmer and don't know the best way to edit it out of there. Any ideas?

Well, a co-worked happened upon the answer to this!
I was aware of the "don't use nested stylesheets rule", which I thought was here:
But it turns out, that ALSO means NOT to organize style sheets here:
Once I took the eHeader style sheet out of the folder, the TOC generated as expected!

  • Dash between words in epub TOC

    Hi,
    im getting a dash between the words in the epub TOC. I have it set up so that each chapter is a seperate InDesign document and the TOC is generated from that. What i get is "Chapter-One" when I want it to be "Chapter One".
    I am new to epub so any suggestions is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    How does the title look like in InDesign document? Is it Chapter-One or Chapter One? Also let us know the version of InDesign you are using.
    Would it be possible for you to share sample document, it will help us understand the problem better. You can upload the document to dropbox and share the link with me. Mail id: [email protected]

  • TOC problems after RH5 - RH7 upgrade

    Hello,
    I use RoboHTML to create help projects.
    After upgrading one with several subprojects from RH5 to RH7
    the following problem occurs:
    the TOC of the subproject is not incorporated in the main
    TOC, instead the name of the subproject is shown. when clicking
    this, the subproject is opened in a new tab (tested on Firefix3 and
    Opera9.5), virtualy as a separate project.
    The same project was previously published with RH5, with the
    subprojects correctly linked.
    Also, I reveive the attached java error (again not existing
    with RH5) when opening the start page. if I substitute the newly
    generated WebHelp.jar with the old one (generated by RH5) the error
    ceases but the TOC problem persists.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks a lot,
    Norbert

    I recently tested the 9.0.1 upgrade and the hotfix for 9.0.1, but the problem still exists. However, "ColdFusion Jedi" Raymond Camden came up with a workaround. You can read about it here:
    http://www.coldfusionjedi.com/index.cfm/2010/9/16/Followup-to-CFGRID-MultiRow-Post
    The problem occurred when the Adobe team that released the 9.0.1 upgrade added "multi-row select" functionality to the HTML/AJAX version of CFGRID, but they failed to include the same ID-passing functionality of the previous "single-row select" implementation.
    I created a more generic version of Raymond's javascript function which finds the selected row(s). This javascript must reside on every page which contains an HTML cfgrid:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    function getSelected(gridName,idName) {
        obj = ColdFusion.Grid.getSelectedRows(gridName);
        var selected = "";
        for(var i=0; i<obj.length; i++) {
          if(selected == "") selected = obj[i][idName];
          else selected += "," + obj[i][idName];
        document.getElementById('selectedRowIDs').value = selected;
        return true;
    </script>
    To force the selected row's ID (or other) field to be passed to to the subsequent page, you must include the following in your CFFORM tag (the field name MUST BE in ALL CAPS):
         onSubmit="return getSelected('gridName','FIELDNAME')"
    Example: <cfform name="itemGridForm" action="editItems.cfm" method="post" onSubmit="return getSelected('itemGrid','ITEMID')"...>
    You must also include the following hidden field in your cfform which contains the cfgrid:
        <!---Pass the selected FileFolderID as a hidden field called "selectedRowIDs" to itemEdit page--->
         <cfinput type="hidden" name="selectedRowIDs" id="selectedRowIDs">
    On the called page, FORM.selectedRowIDs will contain a list of the selected rows' ID fields (or whichever field you choose when calling the Javascript function).

  • CS5.5 ePUB: TOC Marker problems

    Hi all
    Got a problem with some ePUBs I'm exporting out of CS5.5 (7.5.3). I use the TOC Style feature to generate the navigational menu, which it does, but I had some issues with jumping straight to articles in iBooks. Also I was getting some validation errors that caused me to look at the toc.ncx file - eg, "'toc_marker-4': fragment identifier is not defined in 'OEBPS/blahblah_epub.html'"
    Turns out that although ID puts all the correct "toc_marker" code into the toc.ncx file it doesn't always put the corresponding code into the actual html files themselves. For example, in the toc.ncx file the code relating to my second file is;
    <content src="02_Editorial_epub.html#toc_marker-1"/>
    but in the "02_Editorial_epub.html" file there's no "toc_marker-1" defined anywhere. If I add it in next to the para style that is used for the TOC (and do the same for all the other articles - only 2 out of 18 files were output correctly) then it works fine in iBooks and the validation errors disappear. Example of my fixed code;
    <p id="toc_marker-1" class="A-head-article-title">Editorial</p>
    In case it is relevant, my job is made out of a collection of separate chapters in an ID book - I'm not getting ID to split them up. Also, my first document is just an image of the cover of this title so does not contain the paragraph style I ask ID to include on the TOC, so it does not appear in the TOC (which I'm happy about).
    Does anyone know of any workarounds or is this just another thing we need to fix manually once the ePUB is output? Haven't tested this in the CS6 demo yet but we won't be getting CS6 in the near future so that would not be a great help.
    thanks,
    Iain

    Thanks amygfx. Seems like a logical idea. I tried adding in a TOC, even left it in when I made the ePUB, but it didn't make any difference I'm afraid.
    Any other ideas?
    Just to check I'm doing it right, here's my TOC style;
    It's in teh first document in teh book (which is selected as the source) and here's the options I choose when exporting the ePUB;
    Using these settings makes a navigation menu okay but just not correctly!

  • Epub navigational TOC problem

    Indesign CC 2014; OS 10.9.4
    I am having trouble getting a hidden layer, with style applied in the TOC dialogue box, to export to epub navigational TOC.  When it is showing, it exports perfectly, but not when the layer is hidden.

    Thanks for responding!  I am attempting to create a navigational TOC, with two levels, that reads differently than the actual titles of the book chapters, i.e., in most cases, adding "Chapter 1:" to the beginning of the title.  As there is also front matter, section dividers, and a glossary, there are different levels that I want in the TOC, and so I have created TOC styles that define these levels, and what I want each navigational TOC entry to say.  I've applied TOC-specific styles to these on a hidden layer of each chapter, as I don't want the hidden layer to appear on the actual epub pages...just in the navigational TOC.  When the layer is hidden, it doesn't appear at all in the navigational TOC, and instead, a file title navigational TOC shows up, and has unwanted dashes everywhere there is supposed to be a space.  When the hidden layer is showing, the exported epub has a perfectly constructed, exactly the way I want it, navigational TOC, but it appears on the chapter page, and I don't want it there.  Yes, I have selected "multilayered TOC" instead of file title when constructing the TOC styles.  Not sure if this makes any sense, but I appreciate your response and any thoughts you might have.

  • Pages to ePub: TOC and Title Page

    Hello everyone... please help! I'm pulling my hair out.
    When exporting from Pages to ePub, I'm having two issues:
    1- The Title Page (which is page 1 and has been selected as the cover of the book) does not appear or appears blank. What do I have to do to make it appear?
    2- I hear in all forums the need to build a TOC in addition to the one ePub already creates and that appears on the left hand side when the file is opened using an ebook reader. Can anyone please tell me why I have to do this and most importantly HOW to do it?
    Thank you very much!!

    Thank you for sharing such an informative post! I'd like to offer one small correction.
    My company publishes children's picture storybooks in print. These are edge to edge full color pages for those who may not be familiar with this format. Our early ePub's were always disappointing in that we could not duplicate the print format without showing considerable white margins on an e-reader. We have since solved that problem in order to achieve the maximum image size. There will always be some amount of white margin in ePub format, but our image output now nearly fills the screen of any e-reader.
    The 600X860 resolution is correct in order to achieve a wall to wall ePub image. The image must be created at that resolution for insertion into the document, and the page setup must also be set at the same dimension, which in inches is 8.333X11.944. You cannot, for example, use a smaller size image and drag it with constrained proportions to fill the viewport at the 600X860 resolution. The exported ePub file recognizes the portion of the image that is beyond the margins of the viewport and it will show up in an e-reader with a large white bottom margin.
    Dragging a smaller image than the 600X860 resolution to fill the viewport with unconstrained proportions will work, but of course distorts the image. So, create your images at 600X860, insert them into your doc, export to ePub and you will be happy, happy, happy!

  • Epub TOC disappears

    Can't find an ePub forum, so I'll try here.
    I created a small epub file that worked fine on ipad (automatic TOC was there, video works, pictures show up, etc.)
    Then I made  a change in it and importing it again to ipad (via iTunes), and found that the automatic TOC was no longer there.
    However, the NCX file from that ePub DID VALIDATE when tested online.
    These are the step-by-step changes I made.
    1. Removed one chapter (with one picture) from end of the booklet and inserted it into an earlier chapter.
    2. Made no changes to the entries of the chapter that received the insert in either the NCX file or Manifest or Spine sections of the OPF file.
    3. Deleted the moved chapter from the NCX file (and the changed NCX validated online).
    4. Deleted the moved chapter from OPF Manifest and Spine sections.
    5. Moved the Manifest "dataItem#" of the picture in the insert up, so instead of #4 it is #2 (as it's now the second pic appearing in the booklet).
    6. Except for renumbering the dataItems in the Manifest, I changed no text in these moves. It was all cut and paste.
    7. In the moved/inserted chapter, I changed the <h1> of its title to <p class="centerhead"> (which isn't tagged for inclusion in TOC).
    8. The syntax in all chapters and cover checks in BBEdit.
    Please note: All text, video and pictures still show up. Only the automatic TOC is missing.
    Has anyone had similiar problems? Thanks.

    Update: solved by restarting my iPad. Never expected this to be necessary on an Apple-device…

  • EPub TOC not appearing in one book only

    Hi - I've been creating ePubs from Pages files for the past several months, and when I open the ePubs in Adobe Digital Editions 2.0, the TOC appears in the left panel - except in one book! I've created them all the same way in Pages, using the same style templates, exported them all the same . . . but this latest book ePub won't show me the TOC in ADE. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks - Dusty

    Okay got it figured out. Thanks anyway folks! (It was a selection in the Inspector in Pages that was off.)

  • Toc problems in a 25 chapter book

    my 25 chapter book toc style works pretty well until chapter 5, and stops there leaving 20 chapters out.
    what can be the reason for that problem?
    Thanks for any help
    Samuel

    The first thing that jumps into my head is that it isn't finding anything tagged with the style names you included. Check to be sure that the names in use are exactly the same in all the documents -- stylenames are case-sensitive.

  • Epub image problem

    Hi,
    I am trying to create an ibook in Pages. My document has quite a few images which show up in the pages document and also when I export to PDF, However when I export to Epub some of my images disappear. I have checked that they are all inline and I don't have any columns or tables. However I am getting an error from pages when I export to Epub saying that columns and tables are not supported and my epub file may not diisplay correctly.
    Although when I run it though another epub check online I get no errors.
    Anyone else had the same problem? Please let me know if you found a solution as it's really messing with me. I just wanna get my book published already.
    Thanks!

    You Pages document is 60 Mb. All images are in the same section (Chapter), page 19 to 263. You can see it in the thumbnails.
    I can see that you a quite a few page breaks. You can change those to section breaks in the Find and Replace feature > advanced. Click on the Insert button where you can select the breaks. I got 16 replaced breaks. It might be what you need to get the images to stay.
    You might also have a look at your images and see if there are any large ones in Mb which needs to be resized before added to the Pages document. As you images are for showing on a computer you don't need to have them in high resolution. You can downsize them to somethin like 150 dpi and they will look fine on the screen. For printing 200-300 dpi is better. You do this in an application like Photoshop or equivalent.

  • Advanced TOC problem

    I have a long document (73 pages) that has multiple figures, tables, headings and subheadings, etc. I can generate a TOC but the problem I’m having is per our “document guidelines” figure and table caption must be short.  Some of my figure captions are 7 lines.
    Any ideas. Thanks

    Check out the InDesigner blog for some useful video podcasts regarding InDesign. Michael Murphy has a section on Long Documents that may help.
    One suggestion is to duplicate the paragraph style that is used for the captions. Rename it slightly so that it is not picked up by the TOC script.
    Example:
    Caption Style
    Caption NoTOC Style
    Set the long captions in the NoTOC style.
    Add a text frame to the page to hold a short caption.
    Assign the Caption style to it.
    Set the text fill swatch to None, or set the frame to non-printing.
    You may wish to group it with the visible image caption.
    This should allow you to have a long caption for the printed page and a short caption picked up in the TOC.
    If the issue is that the entire caption is not picked up by the TOC, and that is what you desire, then I believe there is the option to paste the text into a text frame and place that into the caption text frame as an anchored object. I've not tested that myself, but I've seen it posted somewhere as an option.

  • InDesign 5.5 ePub ToC, 2nd ToC is rolling up previous ToCs*

    With a book from 2 files when creating an epub the master ToC for the epub is OK.  There are 3 ToCs - a master one for the book, a ToC for the 1st Chapter, and a ToC for the 2nd chapter.  Each chapter has it's own ToC on the first pageo f the chapter that looks ok if it is the first chapter in the book.  If you reorder the chapters in the book pane (without making any other changes), the 2nd chapter always includes the first chapter's ToC. If I export the individual chapter files to ePub the ToC is OK.  Is there a workaround for this behavior?

    Do you "Synchronise the book" after you move the chapter 1 to second chapter location.

  • TOC Problems related to margins - any ideas?

    I had problems with inserting a TOC in a document all day today. For the thesis I need 1.5 in. margin on the left and 1 inch top, bottom and right. TOC function only seems to work properly with all margins being 1 inch or less. What can I do?
    Thank you, Gary

    Hello,
    klick into your table of contents (the entries should now be marked with the blue color) and then open the "Inspector". Go to "Text" and press the "Tabs" button. Change the "Tab Stops" entry (doubleclick on it) to a smaller value.

  • ToC problem with hanging side head paragraphs

    I've created a template in CS4 ID that uses hanging side heads that look like those shown here:
    http://tinyurl.com/bdrnxq
    The hanging side heads were created using instructions included in the linked example.
    Everything is working except the ToC. When I generate one, the hanging side heads are grouped together at the top of the items listed on a page, no matter where they really are located on that page. For example, if the following sections were on page 5 in the book:
    1st level section 1......pg 5
    1st level section 2......pg 5
    1st level section 3......pg 5
    2nd level hanging side head section 3.1.....pg 5
    1st level section 4......pg 5
    Are showing up in the TOC as:
    2nd level hanging side head section 3.1......pg 5
    1st level section 1......pg 5
    1st level section 2......pg 5
    1st level section 3......pg 5
    1st level section 4......pg 5
    Is there a setting that will fix this problem, or a workaround? I'm bummed that this isn't working properly in InDesign.

    Hello Jeurgen
    I don't think that it is possible to do what you want i.e. independently control where Pages breaks the heading in the TOC. However, you will notice that you get slightly nearer what you want if you align the text of the TOC to the left instead of justifying it.
    Annoying I know...

  • Indesign Fixed Layout EPUB Export problems

    I am trying to export a fixed layout book using InDesign. I used the InDesign CC2014. I am working on a PC. I can read my previously hand-coded version done with Dreamweaver and validated with Pagina using the Firefox epub reader extension.
    The exported version from InDesign does not have fixed text. The text has spread out all over the page and some of the words are actually scrambled. Some letters are on top of each other. The file itself validates with no errors using Pagina. But it is not readable as fixed layout using the Firefox Epub Reader Extension.
    Is this a problem with my epub reader? Or is this a problem with the export?
    Has anyone tested a file on a PC with an epub reader other than Calibre or Readium?

    Hello,
    I just tested on Readium and it looks fine there using the Readium app on Google Chrome. (PC version). I'm not releasing books on Apple, so I will not be testing on Mac.
    I will probably be testing for Kobo, I was hoping for a browser extension on Mozilla that it would work on.
