Error catching java makefile

I'm creating a makefile to compile numerous .java files, then run one of them (which requires the others).
The problem is: when the compiler returns an error, the makefile still runs the program --> which i don't want it to do.
How can i catch such errors, preventing the makefile from continuing?
Code so far:
javac Planets.java
echo "Planets compiled."
javac Params.java
echo "Params compiled."
javac SolarSystem.java
echo "SolarSystem Compiled."
echo "Running SolarSystem..."
"

Never heard of Ant, sorry.
I'm on a mac, op from terminal?
(if you can't tell i'm a rookie)To begin with you can compile and run your programs from the terminal.
(Look for a decent text editor that integrates a terminal interface. I have no idea about Mac: I use TextPad on Windows and linux, and my preference is Kate on the latter.)
IIRC javac doesn't return a value to indicate whether or not compiler time errors caused some classes not to be compiled. So If you are trying to detect that I suppose you would have to delete the class files and check for their existance after running javac. This is a lot more trouble than using a ready made tool to control the build process.
Ant is very good - the documentation describes how you can do simple tasks very simply.

  • "catch is unreachable" compiler error with java try/catch statement

    I'm receiving a compiler error, "catch is unreachable", with the following code. I'm calling a method, SendMail(), which can throw two possible exceptions. I thought that the catch statements executed in order, and the first one that is caught will execute? Is their a change with J2SE 1.5 compiler? I don't want to use a generic Exception, because I want to handle the specific exceptions. Any suggestions how to fix? Thanks

    I found the problem:
    "A catch block handles exceptions that match its exception type (parameter) and exception types that are subclasses of its exception type (parameter). Only the first catch block that handles a particular exception type will execute, so the most specific exception type should come first. You may get a catch is unreachable syntax error if your catch blocks do not follow this order."
    If I switch the order of the catch exceptions the compiler error goes away.

  • I am getting Error! java.sql.SQLException:General error

    hi every body,
    I struck with this error , can any one suggest in solving this.
    I had a table in oracledatabase ,i have successfully created a table and inserted clob column with an attachment like xxx.txt.
    table format----> id and text columns
    Now my question is to retrieve that data and store it in local disk i am getting this error

    InputStream fin=rs.getBinaryStream(1);
    int c;
    while((c=fin.read())!=-1){
    file.write(c);
    fin.close();
    s.close();
    rs.close();
    catch(IOException e){

    System.out.println("Err:"+e);
    I am getting the error as

    That usually means something is wrong with the syntax of your sql.
    As a guess 'text' is probably a keyword and shouldn't be used as a field name. It is possible that the same is true for 'id'

  • Getting Error in java mapping: Parsing empty source. Root element expected!

    Hi Experts,
       I am using java mapping for schema validation of input message. I have followed all the standard procedures and implemented the java class in the interface mapping.
    My interface mapping is like this:
    OrderData --->Java Class ---SchemaValidate
                         Mesg Map ---OrderData_to_BAP --->BAPI Msg
    So first I want to validate the schema of the input message. If the input message is invalid then XI should throw an exception. Then I use the actual message mapping to map the input order data to the BAPI input parameters.
    In the java code I am using xerces parser.
    The java code works fine when I run it as a standalone application.
    The interface mapping also works fine if I don't include the java mapping. Ofcourse schema validation does not happen.
    But when I test the interface mapping by including the java mapping then I am getting the error:

    Hi Stefan,
       I did the code changes to return output stream and the java code works perfectly in standalone mode in my PC.
       But when I use the same in the Java mapping with XI then It throws an error "Getting Error in java mapping: Parsing empty source. Root element expected!".
    My XI J2EE server has JDK1.4.3.11.
    Is there any limitation of using SAX parser in XI? If Yes, then which parser should be used for schema validation in XI?
    I have included the XSD file for schema validation along with class files in the .jar file. This jar file is then imported in XI repository. Is the XI engine not able to read the XSD file?
    Do I have to handle reading XSD file differently? Any suggession how?
    Is this parser error due to some security access?
    Kindly help me! I have been struggling with this problem since 2 weeks. I will be greatfull to you if you can help me.
    Thanks
    Gopal

    How to catch java.io.FileNotFoundException when a user enters a bogus jsp page. For example. I have a page called login.jsp. If a user enters log.jsp, the entire path is show and i get java.io.FileNotFoundException. This should not happen. This only happened since I upgraded to 9iAS. I tried send_error=true in zone.properties like i did when i was just using oracle http that came with database and it doesnt work. How are all you guys catching this?? I cant find any documentation. They say send_error=true will work, but IT DOESNT.

  • Can we throw an error in java ,if yes plz give an example?

    Hi,
    How can we throw an error in java like an exception(using try catch).If an error can be thrown then what is the diffrence between error and exception because both can be thrown using throwble.
    Thanks
    Sumit

    Error and Exception both are subclasses of Throwable class, so both can be thrown(I don't want to explain by an example). Now Error class defines exceptions that are not expected to be caught under normal circumstances. Exceptions of type Error are used by Java run-time system to indicate errors having to do with the run-time environment, itself.
    "Stack Overflow" is an example of Error.
    Errors are generally caused in response to catastrophic failures which can't be handeled by your program.

    Please use [code] tags when posting code.
    Are you sure String has a close method? I'm not sure your code compiles.
    Exceptions have a getMessage method, which can be useful (and a printStackTrace method that can be even more useful.)

  • Catching java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException

    Hi all,
    Our Windows NT service developed in Java is throwing exception
    java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException when run as a service.
    The same code does not throw this exception when run interactively.
    We are trying to get a list of files in particular folder.
    The suspect line of code is:
    fLogFiles = fLogFolder.listFiles();
    where fLogFolder is File object pointing to a folder.
    My guess is this is permissions issue but running
    the service by the administrator also causes the problem.
    I tried to catch the exception with
    ========================================================
    catch (java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException ex)
    ex.getTargetException().printStackTrace();
    ============================================
    but compiler gives this error
    exception java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException is never thrown
    in the body of corresponding statement
    I know for sure that the exception is thrown there.
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    TIA

    How do you use Java in a NT Service? If you are using
    JavaService or some other "multi-purpose" service
    launcher, then you are probably registering the method
    that should be run as service by name, and the
    launcher then calls that method using reflection? My
    guess is that either the code trying to invoke your
    method is throwing the exception because of some
    environment problem - or your code throws some other
    exception that is then translated to
    InvocationTargetException on their end of invoke().
    Hard to say without more information though.
    Br - J
    We use com.ms.service package.
    It works fine. The service monitors MQSeries queue and creates files out of messages. We wanted to check for duplicate contents and hence
    I'm trying to get to existing messages.

  • Catch(java.io.IOException ioe) help

    Hi. I have used
    static BufferedReader keyboardInput = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in)); and tried to read what the user will enter from an input box, im expecting interger, character, integer to be entered.
    try{
      int  newOp1 = Integer.parseInt(keyboardInput.readLine());
      char newOp  = (char) keyboardInput.readLine().charAt(0);
      int  newOp2 = Integer.parseInt(keyboardInput.readLine());
    }I can catch the error with
    catch(java.io.IOException ioe){but i dont know how to go about hangling th errors, any ideas? thanks a lot :-)

    but i dont know how to go about hangling th errors,
    any ideas? thanks a lot :-)Well, you might print out the stack trace (ioe.printStackTrace()), then retry. Or print the stack trace and then just use default values, or wrap the exception in one more appropriate for that layer and throw the new exception, or just not catch IOE in the first place and declrae your method to throw it and let your method's caller decide how to handle it.
    (The last two--wrap and rethrow, or just let it bubble up--are the most common.)
    As for "fixing" it, that really depends on the nature of the exception and the semantics of your program. If you get an exception reading from the keyboard, there's probably not much you can do about it.
    If you get an exception creating a file in GUI program, you might put up a dialog box telling the user the file couldn't be created, asking them if they want to try a different location or retry or cancel.

  • Error starting java in RedHat Enterprise ES v3

    Hello all. I'm posting hoping someone has run into this before and might be able to help me.
    We've set up a number of boxes with Redhat Enterprise ES v3, and upgraded the kernel from the stock RedHat 2.4.21 to 2.4.26 because we required reiserfs support (no idea why it isn't bundled from RedHat).
    We are using j2sdk1.4.2_02.
    Once the kernel was upgraded, I tried to run java and we get a strange error. Java runs fine with the stock kernel, but not with the new one.
    At this point in time, I'm inclined to think I neglected to enable an option in the kernel configuration, but I went back and wasn't able to find anything.
    Any idea what could be causing this issue? The complete error is below.
    Thank you in advance

    Hi ditg.
    I have no idea what was causing the problem on 2.4.26, but at this point in time, I'm almost 100% sure it's a kernel-specific issue.
    The workaround I came up with was rebuild the 2.4.21 kernel using the RedHat sources, disabling all the non-necessary modules and basically make it as slim as possible.
    Once we successfully recompiled 2.4.21, j2sdk1.4.2.02/3/4 runs fine.
    Hope this helps....

    Any Help will be appreciated. Thank you.

    sounds like your deployment isn't right - either your classpath isn't set correctly or you haven't included all the classes necessary in your deployment - or if this was working but now it's not then perhaps you removed something?

    Hi all!
    I'm getting this error when I try to execute my application in JDeveloper: Error(5): java.util.zip.ZipException: invalid entry size (expected 2875 but got 2845 bytes)
    This started to happen after I had checkout my application to CVSNT.
    Any help?
    P.S. I'm using JDeveloper 10.1.3 with CVSNT 2.5

    My cvswrappers file (CVSNT):

    *.tlb -kb
    *.vsd -kb
    *.xls -kb
    *.war -kb
    *.wmz -kb
    *.zip -kb Via Tortoise client I can add and commit zip (jar) files in binary format and everything is OK.
    If I do that via Jdev, anybody who checkout that module from cvs have zip exception, because JDev didnt sent in binary format. How to setup that?
    Thanx
