Error Handling in Stored Procedure code

Hi All,
I need to know which step is failing and whats the error message when i run a stored procedure.
Lets say i have a stored procedure with below content.So i want to know which of the below four statements failed,and
the error message belonging to it.
How can i modify the below code to achieve my output.
begin try
DELETE FROM Table1 WHERE Column1 = 'A'
UPDATE Table1 SET Column1 = 'C' WHERE Column2 = 'B'
SELECT * FROM Table1 WHERE Column3 = 'C'
SELECT * FROM Table1 WHERE Column4 = 'D'
end try
begin catch
end catch
Thanks in Advance!!

  • Is including an error handler in every procedure OK?

    Hello,
    I have read a lot of articles about error handling on the internet but could not find advice on whether it is good/acceptable practice to put a handler in every procedure. My goal
    when debugging is to break on every error, so that the relevant variables are still in scope, and I can view them and react to the error. Is there a VS setting for this, or do I need to achieve this via error handling?
    In VB6 I think that there used to be a “Break on all errors” option.
    Currently, many procedures in my code do not have error handlers. When an error is encountered in a procedure that does not have an error handler, I believe that control is passed back down the stack to the first procedure that has a Catch.
    This makes it hard to debug, because the error variables that I need to review are out of scope.
    Therefore, if one is not worried about performance considerations, is it reasonable/best practice to include an error handler in every procedure where there might conceivably be an error?
    Also, how will the above approaches affect runtime behaviour?
    Many thanks.

    Hi Keith,
    First, just to be clear, I am going to assume that by error handling we are talking about Try-Catch blocks in code.  As Acamar said, if you write a block of code that has the potential to fail, and you have a plan for doing something when that failure
    occurs, then definitely wrap the code block in a Try-Catch.
    As for what happens in the debugger when an error occurs, it depends on the context of the error and the assembly in which it occurred.  If you are still on the UI thread and the error occurred in your code or a base class library, then execution
    will stop on the line of code that caused the error - with or without a Try-Catch.  If however the error occurred in another thread, asynchronously, or within an assembly for which you do not have source code (or in unmanaged code), then the debugger
    will break at the lowest spot in the stack where managed code with known source was executed, or nowhere (no source available) if there is no source code or you broke in unmanaged code.  In these cases, adding a Try-Catch might let you break closer to
    the exception because there is managed code executed to create the Try statement - but it still doesn't let you break
    at the actual exception because there's still either no source code or the error is unmanaged.
    So I guess the answer is two-part: don't be afraid to use Try-Catch anywhere that it makes sense, and wait for the improved debugging experience in the next version of Visual Studio (they're improving the ability to debug with secondary threads and async
    code execution).

  • ERROR-Logging of Stored Procedure (Stop / Going on after error + logging)

    Hi @all,
    I am using a Stored Procedure which is very simple:
    =>The stored procedure is selecting many tousands of records from table1 + table2.
    => Some values (records) will be summarized (aggregated/group by).
    =>After this selection and summarizing, this records will be deleted from table3 (if they exist in table3).
    =>Then the selected records will be inserted in table3.
    Now I want to do the following:
    Is there a way to log the errors of the stored procedure?
    For example, the stored procedure is copying many thousands of records.
    If there is a problem on copying/ inserting a record to table3, then I want a error-log in a loggin_table.
    Is there a way to write the error-logs from a stored procedure to a special table in database?
    I want to do this in 2 ways:
    1) On error the error is logged and the stored procedure is stopped.
    2) On error the error is logged and the stored procedure is going on to insert/summarize the next record.
    I don't know how I can get these errors of a stored procedure. Maybe it isn't possible? Or is it better to use a function?
    Hope anyone can give me a hint?
    Thanks a lot.
    Best regards,
    Tim

    Hi
    option one:
    as i know you can have another table without primer key (log table).
    then before you insert into table, select the record count using primary key. if it is duplicate then put those record into the table.
    option two:
    write the log into file.
    declare
    f utl_file.file_type;
    s varchar2(200);
    begin
    f := utl_file.fopen('SAMPLEDATA','sample1.txt','R');
    loop
    utl_file.get_line(f,s);
    dbms_output.put_line(s);
    end loop;
    exception
    when NO_DATA_FOUND then
    utl_file.fclose(f);
    end;

  • Error in calling stored procedure in sender JDBC adapter

    Hi Experts,
    I am working on MySQl to SAP scenario. I have to use stored procedure in sender JDBC adapter.
    I am calling SP as fallows: execute proc_dtdc_booking_interface_sd
    But it returned following error,
    Database-level error reported by JDBC driver while executing statement 'execute proc_dtdc_booking_interface_sd'. The JDBC driver returned the following error message: 'java.sql.SQLException: Unknown prepared statement handler (proc_dtdc_booking_interface_sd) given to EXECUTE'. For details, contact your database server vendor.
    the way i called SP is correct ??
    please suggest me how to resolve the issue ??

  • Deserialization permissions error in CLR stored procedure

    Environment: SQL Server 2008 R2 standard edition and VS2010, .Net Framework 3.5
    I've got a table with a varbinary column that contains a serialized Hashtable. I'm writing a CLR stored procedure that, given the contents of such a field from a row in the table, does a lookup on a key in the Hashtable. and returns the element's value.
    To get the Hashtable, I need to deserialize it, and it appears that the BinaryFormatter's Deserialize function requires certain permissions that I don't know how to grant.
    This SQL Server instance runs on my own development machine, and was installed pretty much with all defaults. I'm the owner.
    Any help on solving this? I should point out while I write a fair amount of SQL and a LOT of VB, I'm far from a SQL Server expert, so if you have suggestions I'd appreciate it if you'd spell things out clearly for me.
    Thanks in advance for any help,
    Tom
    Here's a fragment from the VB source:
        ' the bytes variable is defined as Byte()
        Dim ms As MemoryStream = New MemoryStream()
        ms.Write(bytes, 0, bytes.Length)
        ms.Seek(0, 0)
        Dim formatter As New System.Runtime.Serialization.Formatters.Binary.BinaryFormatter()
        Dim oHT As Object = formatter.Deserialize(ms)    'hurls here
    The CREATE ASSEMBLY statement had WITH PERMISSION_SET = SAFE. I tried it with UNSAFE, and got this error:
    CREATE ASSEMBLY for assembly 'ddmi.deep.data.sqlserver' failed because assembly 'ddmi.deep.data.sqlserver' is not authorized for PERMISSION_SET = UNSAFE.  The assembly is authorized when either of the following is true: the database owner (DBO) has
    UNSAFE ASSEMBLY permission and the database has the TRUSTWORTHY database property on; or the assembly is signed with a certificate or an asymmetric key that has a corresponding login with UNSAFE ASSEMBLY permission.
    Here's an SQL script that runs it:
    declare
        @id int
      , @raw_req_bin varbinary(1500)
      , @value nvarchar(max)
    set @id = 327
    set @raw_req_bin = (select raw_req_bin from dp_payment where transaction_id = @id)
    set @value = dbo.dp_fx_hash_table_lookup(@raw_req_bin, 'first_name')
    and here's what I get when I run the script:
    SecurityExceptionSystem.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Security.Permissions.SecurityPermission, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.

    Demand
    The type of the first permission that failed was:
    System.Security.Permissions.SecurityPermission
    The Zone of the assembly that failed was:
    MyComputer

    Set the database (in a test system) to trustworthy (ALTER DATABSE foo SET TRUSTWORTHY ON) for testing. If this works, look into code signing (sign an assembly and catalog the cert/asymmetric key to master) for production. If you have problems with
    "native" serialization, you might get better results using XML serializers.
    Re: XML serializers. SQLCLR will not load dynamically generated serializers. So you need to pregenerate XML serializers with sgen.exe.
    Your specific error message (the permission error) might be fixed by cataloging the SQLCLR assembly as UNSAFE. If that doesn't work, you might attempt to change the .NET permission configuration on your machine using either of the tools described here:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/7c9c2y1w(v=vs.90).aspx
    Hope this helps, Cheers, Bob

  • Never implemented exception handling  in Stored Procedures

    I have lots of stand alone stored procedures callled from .NET 20 programs that follow the following pattern. They runn against Oracle 10.2 on Win2003. The only deviiation is a couple where I insert to temptables. I specify a parameter for messages but don't know the best way to implement for Oracle as well as any tips on ODP.NET/oracle interactions error handling.
    1. Is it recommended to implement exception handling in With Clauses?
    2. If there is an exception in one cursor's SQL, how do I still execute the second?
    3. Is it best in some circumstances to pass a null back to client and check for null in program?
    From .NET programs I have run into a couple of problems.
    4. TNS packet failure.
    Anyways any suggestions or experiences are welcome.

  • Error while invoking Stored Procedure.

    Hi,
    I am trying to invoke a stored procedure which has one input parameter and 3 output parameters. In the procedure, I am selecting 3 columns from a table based on the input parameter. I have generated a WSDL from database, along with wsdl an xsd has been created. I have used this WSDL in creating partner link on the target side. For source side partner link, I have created WSDL based on the xsd which is created from database. I have deployed this BPEL process and when I try to debug the flow it is failing while invoking the stored procedure I am getting below soap fault.

    Thanks,

    First of all does this scenario occur again.
    "Works first/second time. Later gives this error."
    After you restart the SOA server are you able to reproduce this scenario?
    As already pointed out and from the error message, database connection is reset.
    If you find this error again, try this out.
    em -> home / oc4j_soa -> Administration -> JDBC Resources
    Use the "Test Connection" option for the Connection Pool that you are using for your database JNDI.
    It comes back and say "Connection to "XYZCP" established successfully." it is good to use.
    Run the BPEL process again and once you find the error, come back and test the connection.
    If it comes back with Error, diagnose based on the error message received.
    Cheers

  • ESB throwing error when invoking Stored Procedure

    Hi there,
    I'm using SOA Suite 10.1.3.4. I have an ESB service which stores orders from a IBM Maximo system(Procurement system) into Oracle database using stored procedure. I can insert the orders through the endpoint URL using the test client provided by SOA Suite ESB console. But when Maximo sends the orders i'm getting errors as below. I can also see that the input is null when called the procedure. But in the instance of the ESB Console i can see the Payload sent by the Maximo system. Not sure where and why the payload disappears before calling the stored procedure.
    I have been battling on this for couple of days. Any help on this is much appreciated.

    Dhilip

    I doubt JPublisher has anything to do with this issue as JDeveloper is the tool used for SOA Development. The issue here is with the process that gets invoked by maximo. It is not populating the data correctly, and nulls are being sent to the adapter. When nulls are sent this causes issues in the code because it cannot initilise varrays in the stored procedure.
    Therefore the fix is to sort this issue out is to stop it sending nulls, if nulls are valid form the maximo system then the stored procedure needs to manage these. This can be done by setting defaults for the inputs.
    cheers

  • Error calling a  stored procedure returning a PLSQL table /  REF cursor

    stored proceure declares -
    TYPE A_rec IS RECORD (

    end NUMBER (10)
    TYPE tmp_tbl IS TABLE OF A_rec ;
    PROCEDURE get_B(
    p_id IN NUMBER,
    p_startdate IN DATE,
    p_enddate IN DATE,
    p_tbl OUT tmp_tbl
    My Java code reads -
    StoredProcedureCall storedProcedureCall = new StoredProcedureCall();
    storedProcedureCall.setProcedureName("get_B");
    DataReadQuery query = new DataReadQuery();
    query.setCall(storedProcedureCall);
    Vector parameters = new Vector();
    /** For all input params **/
    query.addArgument(param.getInputParamName(" name");
    parameters.add("values");
    /** Now comes the OUT part .. i am not sure what to do **/
    storedProcedureCall.useNamedCursorOutputAsResultSet("p_tbl ");
    /** execute query **/
    Vector result = (Vector) getSession(ctx).executeQuery(query, parameters);
    ------------- My program does not throw any error ... but does not return anything ----

    TopLink currently doesn't support pl/sql types to be used as stored procedures parameters - but version 11 will.
    However you can use a single cursor as an out parameter in your stored procedure:
    p_tbl OUT CURSOR_TYPE.ANY_CURSOR,
    and it will be returned by TopLink.

    OracleCommand objCmd = new OracleCommand("TEST_PROC",conn);
    objCmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
    OracleParameter inPar_1 = new OracleParameter();
    inPar_1.OracleType = OracleType.Number;
    inPar_1.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input;
    inPar_1.Value = 123456;
    objCmd.Parameters.Add(inPar_1);
    objCmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
    It returns this error:
    Exception Message: ORA-06550: row 1, column 7: PLS-00306: wrong number or types of arguments in call to 'TEST_PROC' ORA-06550: row 1, column 7: PL/SQL: Statement ignored
    Exception Source: System.Data.OracleClient
    The stored procedure is very very simple to test only the call.
    Anybody can help me.
    Thanks !!!!

    Hello,
    System.Data.OracleClient == Microsoft provider for Oracle (whereas this is the Oracle Data Provider for .NET forum).
    However, the MS provider operates in Bind By Name mode, so you might try adding this to your code:
    inPar_1.ParameterName = "par_1";Perhaps that will help a bit,

  • JDBC - CallableStatement - Error in Accessing Stored Procedure of MS SQL

    Dear Friends,

                   System.out.println(se.toString());

  • Error in calling Stored procedure returns REFCURSOR

    Hi,
    I've written a oracle stored procedure returning REFCURSOR. say,extractorderdespatchconfirmsp('','','','','','H1','ACG','','','','',:rc).
    Following statement throwing error.
    CallableStatement cs = con.PrepareCall("{extractorderdespatchconfirmsp('','','','','','H1','ACG','','','','',:rc)}");
    rs = cs.executeQuery();
    Could you rectify this problem and give me the currect code.
    riyaz

    Your naming convention leaves a little to be desired.
    String command = "{CALL extractorderdespatchconfirmsp(?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?)}";
    CallableStatement cstmt = conn.prepareCall(command);
    //set the variables here ie, dates need to be a timestamp format. use set timestamp.
    cstmt.setInt(1, 2);
    cstmt.setString(2, "a string");
    cstmt.setInt(3, 0);
    //for return values
    cstmt.registerOutParameter(3, Types.INTEGER);
    cstmt.registerOutParameter(2, Types.INTEGER);
    cstmt.execute();
    int status = cstmt.getInt(3);
    int status2 = cstmt.getInt(2);
    cstmt.close();
    It took me awhile too to get JDBC to call these right.

  • Error Calling Oracle Stored Procedure From Within Report

    Hi,
    I have a report that calls an oracle stored procedure which returns a ref cursor. The report is working ok in our development environment when called from our development website through .NET.
    When the report is moved and accessed from our UAT website we get the following error :-
    Failed to open a rowset. Details: ADO Error Code: 0x Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle Description: One or more errors occurred during processing of command. Failed to open a rowset. Details: ADO Error Code: 0x Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle Description: ORA-06550: line 1, column 7: PLS-00306: wrong number or types of arguments in call to 'RHS_GET_CAND_SECTION_REFS' ORA-06550: line 1, column 7: PL/SQL: Statement ignored Native Error: Failed to open a rowset. Error in File C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\temp_d663a952-bef6-4bf7-bf1a-5e288afdb612 {9B6DFB38-A436-4940-9D80-B4C23DFFFF19}.rpt: Failed to open a rowset.
    If we open the report manually we are prompted to enter database connection info. If we enter the UAT connection details the report runs ok. If we save the report and try to open it from UAT website through .NET it now opens ok.
    If we then move that same report back to the development environment and open from our development website it fails with the same error above.
    Both connections are using Microsoft OLE DB drivers and the Oracle databases are the same version (10.2.0.1.0).
    Is the connection information being stored in actual report and somehow being used when the report is opened through .NET?
    Any help appreciated
    Regards
    Paul

    Hi,
    Please let me know if the issue occurs with the crystal reports designer, if you are facing issues with the .NET application then a need to create a post [here|SAP Crystal Reports, version for Visual Studio;.
