    Hi,
    From the error message it is clear that db shutdown is in process. So you have to wait some more time so that shutdown process will be completed, then you can start. If you have no time to wait then you can reboot the machine so that once server restarted you can start your database.

    Hi ,
    I am getting the error when i try to login to oracle
    Error ORA-01033 oracle intialization or shut down in progress.
    i waited for much time but i get the same error.can some one help.
    Thanks

    442321, if a startup is in process you will need to either let it complete or cancel it in order to connect with a non sysdba session.
    You cancel the startup the same way you would kill a hung shutdown by connecting as sysdba and then issueing a shutdown abort.
    You should review the alert log prior to issuing an abort to see what is going on.

    OS/Disk failure external to Oracle.
    Oracle is victim; not the culprit.
    After the disk throwing error is replaced, you will need to restore the DB from most recent backup.

  • Error: ORA-01033: Oracle initialization or shudown in progress

    I can't connect to my Oracle database 10g XE from both browser and SQL*Plus.
    I get this Error message each time I try: ORA-01033: Oracle initialization or shudown in progress.
    I am so confused, since I worked with it successfully yesterday and tis morning, I restored my system to yesterday to no avail. I tried stopping the database from the start menu and I got the prompt that the stop was successful, I started the database from the start menu and got a prompt that the start up was successful, yet when I try to go to the database Home Page from the same start menu, Internet Explorer can't display the page and SQL*Plus returns the afore-mentioned error.
    What can I do to urgently connect to this database?

    No...
    I am running SQLPLUS from AIX which our SAP OS using ora<sid>.  SQLPLUS from local command prompt works fine.
    We are currently looking into firewall issues where the oracle listener reponds back on a random port rather than the standard port 1521 for which firewall is open.
    I got hold on some ORACLE notes which talks about using SHARED SOCKET connection to solve the issue

  • Error 12528, instance BLOCKED, and ORA-01033 error

    I'm a student, just getting started with Oracle, and my teacher is not very helpful with the install/running problems that I'm having with Oracle.
    I installed Oracle 11g Express a week ago, and upon installing it, the software worked just fine. I was able to create connections and write basic select statements to get data from a database provided by the manufacturer of my textbook.
    Now, when I try to connect to the database, I get an error that says "ORA_12528, TNS:listener: all appropriate instances are blocking new connections."
    I did a little research on how to fix this, and got into the listener to see its status. Here's what it says:

    I have no idea what's going on here, and unfortunately, since I'm a student and have just started with Oracle, I can't seem to make heads or tails of most of what I'm finding on the forums here (and most of the threads that seem pertinent are 6 or more years old).
    If anyone out there can help me, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks in advance!

    Srini -
    I did take a look at the link you posted and I tried to do what it said, but I don't really know what to make of what I found. When I run services.msc I find the following are running:
    OracleJobSchedulerXE, OracleMTSRecoveryService, OracleServiceXE, OraclexEClrAgent, and OracleXETNSLisnener
    So it appears that the Oracle Service is running... probably not the problem.
    With regards to the logs, I don't know how to do what you suggested (make the log bigger, allow for overwrites, etc.).
    I tried to follow the suggestions from the link you posted and get into the event viewer, but when I enter "eventviewer" in the run window my machine can't find it. I tried other methods I found online to get into the event viewer, but it appears as though my computer doesn't offer me access to it (or simply doesn't have that capability). Are there other ways to clear old logs? Can I just open it as a text file and delete the contents? I don't want to make a mess out of things, and I really don't know what I'm doing so any guidance would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    If I understand the second part of the question correctly you can use DBMS_SERVICE to create an alias on both servers.
    Then depending upon the ROLE they are in you can just connect.
    First an entry need to be added to the client tnsnames.ora that uses a SERVICE_NAME instead of a SID.
    ernie =
    (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS_LIST =
           (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = primary.host)(PORT = 1521))
           (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = standby.host)(PORT = 1521))
           (CONNECT_DATA =
           (SERVICE_NAME = ernie)
    )Next the service 'ernie' needs to be created manually on the primary database.
    BEGIN
       DBMS_SERVICE.CREATE_SERVICE('ernie','ernie');
    END;
    /After creating the service needs to be manually started.
    BEGIN
       DBMS_SERVICE.START_SERVICE('ernie');
    END;Several of the default parameters can now be set for 'ernie'.
    BEGIN
       DBMS_SERVICE.MODIFY_SERVICE
       ('ernie',
       FAILOVER_METHOD => 'BASIC',
       FAILOVER_TYPE => 'SELECT',
       FAILOVER_RETRIES => 200,
       FAILOVER_DELAY => 1);
    END;
    /Finally a database STARTUP trigger should be created to ensures that this service is only offered if the database is primary.
    CREATE TRIGGER CHECK_ERNIE_START AFTER STARTUP ON DATABASE
    DECLARE
    V_ROLE VARCHAR(30);
    BEGIN
    SELECT DATABASE_ROLE INTO V_ROLE FROM V$DATABASE;
    IF V_ROLE = 'PRIMARY' THEN
    DBMS_SERVICE.START_SERVICE('ernie');
    ELSE
    DBMS_SERVICE.STOP_SERVICE('ernie');
    END IF;
    END;
    /Check the status using lsnrctl status
    /home/oracle: >lsnrctl status
    Service "ernie" has 1 instance(s).
    erine is from the Oracle example, you can add whatever you want and then if you do a switchover or failover it is transparent to your users.
    See this for more details

  • ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress on mounted standby

    Hi we are using Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.4.0
    We have seven different databases on different machines.
    Similarly we also have standby database for all databases on different machines.
    The standby databases are opened as follows:
    Startup mount;
    Alter database mount standby database;
    Alter database recover managed standby database disconnect from session;
    When we tried to connect on standby database as Non-SYSDBA user we received following message (that I think is correct)

    Output for btsouth is correct,when connecting as non-sysdba user. On btnorthn obviously it is tried to execute a query. Is it possible you have sqlplus startup scripts (login.sql and/or glogin.sql) on btnorthn but not on btsouth?

  • Database not found/Error: ORA-16621: database name for ADD DATABASE must be

    I am new to Data Guard and am trying to set up Data Guard Broker. I had created a configuration file with both my primary and standby databases and at one time I could show both databases. How can I get Data Guard to see the standby database correctly again?

    Thank you for the constructive feedback. I have been able to make progress on this issue.
    I did check the Data Guard Log files as you suggested. I did not find anything when I checked them before but this time I found the following:

    I tried again to see the database in Data Guard Broker:
    DGMGRL> show database 10gSB
    Object "10gsb" was not found
    however, I then was able to add the database in Data Guard Broker:
    DGMGRL> add database 10gSB
    as connect identifier is 10gSB
    maintained as physical;Database "10gsb" added <== this is progress!!!
    However the configuration shows the following:
    DGMGRL> show database 10gSB
    Database
    Name: 10gsb
    Role: PHYSICAL STANDBY
    Enabled: NO
    Intended State: OFFLINE
    Instance(s):
    10gSB
    Current status for "10gsb":
    DISABLED <=====
    So I tried to enable the database:
    DGMGRL> enable database 10gSB
    Error: ORA-16626: failed to enable specified object
    Failed.
    and I tried to reinstate the database:
    DGMGRL> reinstate database 10gSB
    Reinstating database "10gsb", please wait...
    Error: ORA-16653: failed to reinstate database
    Failed.
    Reinstatement of database "10gsb" failed
    So I checked the configuration and now see two entries for the standby database but with case differences:
    DGMGRL> show configuration
    Configuration
    Name: orcl10g
    Enabled: YES
    Protection Mode: MaxPerformance
    Fast-Start Failover: DISABLED
    Databases:
    orcl10g - Primary database
    10gSB - Physical standby database
    10gsb - Physical standby database (disabled)
    Current status for "orcl10g":
    SUCCESS
    Question: How do I get rid of 10gSB and enable 10gsb?

    Hello;
    I would review this document :
    http://uhesse.com/2009/08/19/connect-time-failover-transparent-application-failover-for-data-guard/
    The ORA-1033 hints you are trying to connect to the database in the wrong role. There's a trigger and some additional work which can prevent this.
    Uwe's document should explain all.
    The "SQL*Plus: Release 9.0.1.0.1 - Production on Fri Jun 22 17:38" is very odd. I would expect you would being using the client on the server is this not the case?
    DBMS_SERVICE lets you define something like this :
    ernie =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = primary.server)(PORT = 1521))
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = standby.server)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = ernie)
    Check out "CREATE_SERVICE Procedure" here :
