Error ORA-07217 starting Oracle9i
Having tried to use Oracle on WindowsMe..., I am now trying RedHat Linux 7.3. I have tried installing Oracle9i standard edition. I had one error during installation which meant the Database Configuration Assistant did not run properly. When I try to run sqlplus and enter the scott/tiger username and password I get the following error:
ORA-07217: sltln: environment variable cannot be evaluated.
As I am new to Linux and Oracle I do not understand what this means. Any information/solutions to this problem would be greatly apprectiated
Thanks
Mike
Check $ORACLE_HOME/dbs. I noticed that the installer didn't create the init<ORACLE_SID>.ora during the installation.
If init<ORACLE_SID>.ora is not in the directory, make a copy from init.ora to init<ORACLE_SID>.ora (e.g your ORACLE_SID name is "test", #cp init.ora inittest.ora). Hope this help.

Error ORA-20100 : Start of root element expected
I have been trying to check xml in clobs by using Steve's book CheckXMLinClob procedure. I used that procedure in a valid xml file ('claim77804.xml') and this keeps coming up.
ThanksWould you post your PL/SQL code? This error is normally caused by non-valid XML input which can not be recognized by XML parser.

Ora-01031 error while starting oracle9i server on linux advanced redhat 3.1
I am encountering some errors while trying to start the oracle9i database on linux server.
I am getting the error ora-01031 while trying to connect to the server as sysdba.
I give the following commands
sqlplus /nolog
Sql> conn sys/xxxx as sysdba
ERROR:
ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
The listener service is started. The user "oracle" belongs to the groups oinstall and dba on linux.
When I try to connect to the sys account through enterprise manager console, it connects.
But when I try to start the database it says
ERROR:
ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
I am trying to solve this problem since the past two days but to no avail.
The last time the database was used it was not shutdown properly (we had rebooted the linux server through command prompt).
Might be this has caused some problem.
I would be very grateful to you if you could spare some time and look into this problem.Listen Sheikh Abdullah, if u don't need remote access to that server over secure conn., don't use password file authentification but change REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORDFILE to NONE and when u conn thru OEM as sysdba try to change his pass and then try conn thru command promt(CP) usin that new pass.
Or recreate pass file adding new pass in it, set REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORDFILE to exclusive or shared and conn thru CP using password file pass.
Try this possible solutions in order u wish. -
Oracle9i Start Error: ORA-1031
Whenever I started Oracle9i in window98, it ask for a username and password. I have tried all the standard user (i.e. sys/sysdba, scott/tiger, system/manager) but nothing works and the error ORA-1031 appear.
The most probable reason is you are not logged into your machine as the administrator of the machine (or as the user who installed Oracle). You do not have sufficient privileges to start and stop the Oracle.
Log in as administrator and try to connect as :
/ as sysdba
If you still get the error, refer for tips at this url to
solve the problem

But I encountered another issue from Enterp Manager :

My connection has this format:

con.ConnectionString = "User Id=scott;Password=tiger;Data Source=oracle";
con.Open();
Console.WriteLine("Connected to Oracle" + con.ServerVersion);
Please tell me what is wrong here. Thanks. Dan.

Please check Oracle support id : Troubleshooting ORA-3135 Connection Lost Contact (Doc ID 787354.1) -
Hi
I need to load XML document into a table in Oracle warehouse builder.
I've followed the steps as given in the user guide and I get the following error,
ORA-20011: Error occurred while loading source XML document into the target database object PURCHASE_ORDERS.
Base exception: Start of root element expected.

ORA-06512: at "DC_DWH.WB_XML_LOAD", line 4

The steps are:

BEGIN
CONTROL_INFO := '<OWBXMLRuntime> <XMLSource> <file>c:\xml_test\y.xml</file> </XMLSource> <targets> <target XSLFile="c:\xml_test\y.xsl" dateFormat="yyyy.MM.dd">PURCHASE_ORDERS</target> </targets></OWBXMLRuntime>';

Any help is appreciatedHello,
The error occurs as far as your XSL file has incorrect structure. Your have to transform incoming XML in so-called (by Oracle) canonical form i.e.:
<ROWSET>
<ROW>
<FIELD_1>value-for-field-1</FIELD_1>
<FIELD_N>value-for-field-N</FIELD_N>
</ROW>
</ROWSET>
So, assuming your table has three fields : SHIPTO_NAME, SHIPT_STREET, SHIPTO_CITY, - your XSL file should look like following:
<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" >
<xsl:template match=/>
<ROWSET>
<xsl:apply-templates select=purchaseOrder/>
</ROWSET>
</xsl:template>
<xsl:template match=purchaseOrder>
<ROW>
<SHIPTO_NAME><xsl:value-of select=shipTo/name/></SHIPTO_NAME>
<SHIPTO_STREET><xsl:value-of select=shipTo/street/></SHIPTO_STREET>
<SHIPTO_CITY><xsl:value-of select=shipTo/city/></SHIPTO_CITY>
</ROW>
</xsl:template>
</xsl:stylesheet>

Hi,
my environment is:
OS: Windows XP Professional Edition SP2
DB: Oracle EE 10.2.0.3
Primary db: orcl
Standby db: stby
both databases are running on the same server.
I have configured Data Guard as described in the DG Administration Guide.
In the Data Guard Broker I switch to 'stby' succesfully and 'stby' is the primary db and 'orcl' is the standby db.
I switched back to 'orcl' as primary db and I get some errors:

I have searched for solutions on Metalink and google, but with no success.
Has anyone got this kind of problem?
Any suggestions on how to resolve it?
ThanksHi DigerDBA
I did your advice , the error disappear, and thanks for your advice , but do I need to keep standby_file_management='AUTO' or 'MANUAL' in primary and standby init files?
Am asking this because when I use the observer the failover failed and I get the following error
SQL Execution error=604, sql=[ALTER DATABASE COMMIT TO SWITCHOVER TO PRIMARY WAIT WITH SESSION SHUTDOWN]. See error stack below.
ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1
ORA-01275: Operation ADD LOGFILE is not allowed if standby file management is automatic.

Oracle Not Starting : error ORA-19809
Hello All,
I was trying to start the 11gr2 database and getting the following error. Please can any one give some advise ? I manually deleted all archive logs using OS command but still i get the
same error when i try to start the database.
ORA-19815: WARNING: db_recovery_file_dest_size of 4039114752 bytes is 100.00% used, a nd has 0 remaining bytes available.
You have following choices to free up space from recovery area:
1. Consider changing RMAN RETENTION POLICY. If you are using Data Guard,
then consider changing RMAN ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY.
2. Back up files to tertiary device such as tape using RMAN
BACKUP RECOVERY AREA command.
3. Add disk space and increase db_recovery_file_dest_size parameter to
reflect the new space.
4. Delete unnecessary files using RMAN DELETE command. If an operating
system command was used to delete files, then use RMAN CROSSCHECK and
DELETE EXPIRED commands.

Oh well. So you " *think* database need to be started before you do any thing with RMAN"
Did you try?
We don't need the database to be open for this, just have the control file mounted:
SQL> shutdown immediate

You don't mention where exactly you were receiving this error but I was receiving this error when doing the database creation via DBCA. I was able to get around this by altering the 'shmmax' parameter. I suspect that the classpath is not the issue in this case, infact I think it should be unset (as well as other things such as JAVA_HOME).
I initially tried the 100Mb specified at this site: http://www.e-gineer.com/instructions/install-oracle9i-on-linux.phtml
However this wasn't enough so I went for the 'loony' option and set it to its maximum value using sysctl as root (see below):
sysctl -w kernel.shmmax=4294967295
Obviously you probably don't want to leave it at this size and will want to find the appropriate value. (Oracle reccomends half of physical memory - I haven't tried this yet).

Error ORA - 12637 when start Oracle 8i Personnel
I have install oracle 8i personnel to the window 98 notebook. The installation successful without any error. But when I used the oracle8i navigator and click on the local database, error "ORA-12637: Can not attach to Oracle 8i" and "ORA-12637 - Packet Receive Failed"
The same error encountered when I start the database.
Appreciate if any could help on this matter.
Thanks in advance.Hi
Check weather entries are there in the registry.
Go to the services in the control panel and see if the oracle service has started if not start it. If this is up then the registry is OK. if If not u can create it using the oradim utility.
Then set your oracle_sid = <dbname> in the dos prompt and try connecting again.
Let us see what happense -
I installed Oracle 9i (9.2.0.1.0) on a Windows XP machine (the machine is in a domain). There were no errors during the instalation, but I have problems connecting from the same machine using the sid. Here are some examples from a command promt:

SQL>If I go to services I see that the service is running: OracleServiceORCL9I Started.
Thx.Yes, the XP firewall is running. During the Oracle instalation it poped up twice, but I selected 'Unblock'. I can't turn it off because it is running using the domain settings, but I can add exceptions (programs or ports). Port 1521, tnsping or sqlplus are not blocked and there is an option 'Display a notification when Windows Firewall blocks a program' witch is checked.

For the permissions, what accounts are you setting this for. In general, if the share is on the same server, Everyone Full or Read on the Share and System Full or Read on the NTFS should work.
For the error message, it looks like you are trying to import an OS Image and not an OS Install Package. OS images use a WIM file and OS Install Packages use the entire set of source files from the media. For OS images, you must thus explicitly point it
to a specific WIM file.
