Error passing Integer to a bean

Hello,
I have two JSP's Students.jsp and People.jsp. Students displays the list of only people who have the role of student whereas People displays a list of all people in the db.
Currently, I am referencing com.project.train.People bean and calling the viewPeople() method to get a list of people, and the viewStudents() method to get a list of Students. (see code below) This code works well, but it is basically just redundant code. If I want to get a list of people with any other role, the code will be duplicated again.
What I would like to do is to change this to only call the viewPeople() method passing the integer of the role ID to use in the WHERE clause of the SQL (Prepared)Statement (like ...WHERE ROLE_ID = ?). Of course, if I only want to get all of the people, I could pass "null" and get a full list.
My problem is that when I do this and try calling the viewPeople method, whether or not I pass a value to the method, I get a variation on the following error:
C:\Tomcat 4.1\work\Standalone\localhost\ISupport\Students_jsp.java:97: viewPeople(java.lang.Integer) in com.project.common.People cannot be applied to (int)
     ResultSet rs = student.viewPeople(1);
---------------------^
Many thanks in advance for your help.
James.
com.project.train.People:
package com.project.train;
import java.sql.*;
import java.util.*;
public class People extends Object implements java.io.Serializable {
String error;
Connection con;
public void connect(){
<connect to db...>
public void disconnect(){
<disconnect from db...>
public ResultSet viewStudents() throws SQLException, Exception{
ResultSet rs = null;
try{
String queryString = ("<SQL to get only students from db>:");
Statement stmt = con.createStatement();
rs = stmt.executeQuery(queryString);
} catch (SQLException sqle) {
<handle it>
} catch (Exception e) {
<handle it>
return rs;
public ResultSet viewPeople() throws SQLException, Exception{
ResultSet rs = null;
try{
String queryString = ("<SQL to get all people from db>:");
Statement stmt = con.createStatement();
rs = stmt.executeQuery(queryString);
} catch (SQLException sqle) {
<handle it>
} catch (Exception e) {
<handle it>
return rs;
Proposed code for new viewPeople method:
public ResultSet viewPeople(Integer intRoleID) throws SQLException, Exception{
ResultSet rs = null;
PreparedStatement psQuery;
try{
if (!(intRoleID == null)){
psQuery = con.prepareStatement("SELECT <...> where role_id = ?");
psQuery.setString(1, intRoleID.toString());
}else{
psQuery = con.prepareStatement("SELECT * FROM People");
rs = psQuery.executeQuery();
} catch (SQLException sqle) {
<handle it>
} catch (Exception e) {
<handle it>
return rs;

In the class named Students_jsp.java, your code is...
ResultSet rs = student.viewPeople(1);
But you have defined viewPeople() to take an argument of type Integer. 1 is an int, not an Integer. This should cure that problem.
ResultSet rs = student.viewPeople(new Integer(1));

  • Passing integer value in prompt

    Hi Everyone,
    I am trying to pass a smallint datatype value (ex: 2000) from a page prompt to a filter. When I try to view the result, I am getting an error;
    Error getting drill information: SELECT C1, C2, FROM SH WHERE C1 = variable1
    Odbc driver returning an error (SQLExecDriverW).
    State: HY000. Code: 10058....
    Unresolved column: "variable1".(HY000)
    Note: I tried CAST(C1 as INT) for the column formula, but it didn't help.
    But, I tried modifying the prompt column with non-integer, like Product Name, and pass the variable, the value is passed to the filter column Product Name and it worked.
    My goal is to pass a presentation variable(integer) and apply an expression to the variable (variable1 - 1) and use both the variable values for my filter between condition.
    Simply, I am looking for how to pass integer from prompt to filter and apply expression to the passed variable.
    Hope you guys will help me in solving this issue.
    Thanks,
    Tom.

    Hi,
    Can someone help in correcting the syntax that applied on the filter: cast(@{variable1} as int). I tried lot of ways.
    Passing a value from prompt and convert it to integer at filter end.
    I am trying to implement SQL Expression for filter as
    *cast(@{variable1} as int) - 1*
    Thanks.

  • How to pass a populated Java bean to a jsp

    Hi,
    I'm new to J2EE world. I want to know how should I pass a populated Java Bean (not EJB) to a JSP without displaying that JSP in the next step. I would be much grateful to anyone who gives a solution to my problem.
    Thanks in advance

    Urk?
    A JSP is meant to be displayed. If there's business logic in that JSP, get it out of there. Process the bean as needed on the server side and send the flow on to some view that actually should be displayed.

    Any ideas?
    TIA

    Okay, I found it - my bad but this might help you..
    Turns out the managed-beans.xml (and possibly other files /directories) under WEB-INF were set to read only due to the CM tool I am using - these files were checked in at one point (probably shouldn't have been). I thought I got them all but had missed a few.
    So the moral of the story is beware of setting read-only files!

    Can anybody help me with this, please?
    Regards

    I'm confused :-(
    first you said the problem is solved, now you state it isn't.
    It looks like you have a problem with your first page. As far as I see it from the stack trace you try to use an iterator on this page which returns no row, but you try to make on the current row.
    Check the binding of the iterator.

  • IDOC Error - Error Passing the IDOC

    Dear Experts,
                 I had a <removed by moderator> problem while saving the invoice.
                In my case, IDOC is created and Status is shown as 03 (Data Passed to port OK), But the file is not written in Application server. • Passing values to form bean string array from dynamic added textboxes

    Hi,
    I am unable to pass values to form bean string array from a jsp in which I have incorporated dynamically adding of textboxes in javascript.
    I have given add/delete row option in the jsp. If there is single row, this is working fine. But after adding a row, I am not able to either do any validations on added textboxes or pass the values to the String array form bean variable.
    code snippet:
    var cell6 = row.insertCell(4);
    var element5 = document.createElement("input");
    element5.type = "text";
    element5.className = "formtext1";
    element5.size = "5";
    element5.value = "00.00";
    element5.name= "qty"; // this is a string array of the form bean.
    element5.onchange=function() {checkNumeric(this);};
    cell6.appendChild(element5);
    <html:text styleClass="formtext1" property="qty" value="" size="5" styleId="qty" onchange="checkNumeric(this)"/></td>

    Shivanand,
    There's no need to post that much code when you could create a very short test case that demonstrates only the problem you are having.
    You're using &NAME. notation on something that isn't a page or application item. You can't reference PL/SQL variables that way (or any other way) outside the PL/SQL scope. For your situation, you could create a page item named P55_DOCID and assign it a value in the PL/SQL process (:P55_DOCID := DOCID;), then reference &P55_DOCID. in HTML areas like the success message.
