There is not a chance in the world, especially not knowing column definitions that I, and I suspect most anyone else, is going to wade through this much unformated code looking for an error you couldn't bother to copy in full.
Either tell us, specifically, the line on which the error is occurring or, better yet, start whacking stuff out of your code until you find the offending definition. That is certainly what I would do. Commenting out sections is a marvelous way to quickly find an issue.
Before you post again please read the FAQ. It will explain to you how to properly post and use the tags.

• Returning String data through argument

I need to write a method to call the following method:
int myFunc(char *buf, int code);
Where I need the return value integer and I also want to get back the char * as a string.
I am thinking the most straightforward thing to do would be:
public native int myFunc(StringBuffer sb, int code);
and then in my native code create the return string and use the MethodID functions to call the StringBuffers append() method.
I considered making two functions - one to get the string and one to check for an error, but figured that could cause threading implications in the future.
I assume this is a common issue, is there a recommended solution?
Thanks,
mike

Sorry I didn't reply earlier- never really came back to this thread - the solution I suggested in my first message worked great for me.
Here's what it looks like (the relevant bits at least):
* Class: com_nmss_ms_log_hsLogger
* Method: lgGetText
* Signature: (Ljava/lang/StringBuffer;Ljava/lang/String;I)I
JNIEXPORT jint JNICALL Java_com_nmss_ms_log_hsLogger_lgGetText
(JNIEnv *env, jobject obj, jobject stringBuf, jstring id, jint msgId, jchar ss_id)
char buff[501];
int result, i;
jstring retString;
jclass cls = (*env)->GetObjectClass(env, stringBuf);
jmethodID mid = (*env)->GetMethodID(env, cls, "append", "(Ljava/lang/String;)Ljava/lang/StringBuffer;");
result = logGetText(log_handle, msgId, buff, 500);
retString = (*env)->NewStringUTF(env, buff);
(*env)->CallObjectMethod(env, stringBuf, mid, retString);
return result;
}

• Return String array in server side

i wrote a bean which contains a function return String array (
String[] ). It shows no error on compile time, and also in
generate jar file. However, when i generate it to an ear file,
the syntax of the wsdl file is not correct so the client can't
call this function becuase the xml can't parse the wsdl.
When i change the return type to String, everything is ok. Does
anybody know what's happen? I really have no idea on it, thx.

This is why I wanted to see some code. I wanted to see how you are trying to move the array from one class to another.
This should work... provided that the array is initialised correctly in ClassA. If you are doing it like this, please post some code and I'll help you fix it.
class ClassA{
public String[] getMyArray(){
return myArray;
class ClassB{
public void myMethod(){
ClassA myA = new ClassA();
String[] newArray = myA.getMyArray();
}

• Why returning string from java stored function failed ? HELP ME, PLEASE

Hi everybody,
I created java stored function: it's doing http post, parsing xml from http reply, and returning string result.
Sometimes, it doesn't return any value. What can be a reason ?
The high level procedure, has following form:
class SBE {
public static String call(String arg0) {
SBE sbe=new SBE("d:\\oracle\\ora81\\network\\log\\SBE.log");
String result=SBEParser.go(sbe.sendRequest(arg0, ""), sbe.logger);
sbe.logger.log(result);
sbe.logger.log("Finish SBE intetraction");
return result;
PLSQL wrapper has a simple form:
create or replace package PG_SBE as
function CALL(arg0 in varchar2) return varchar2;
end;
create or replace package body PG_SBE as
function CALL(arg0 varchar2) return varchar2 as language java name 'SBE.call(java.lang.String) return java.lang.String';
end;
In log file ("d:\\oracle\\ora81\\network\\log\\SBE.log"), I can find message :
"Finish SBE intetraction"
but query:
select pg_sbe.call("any argument") from dual;
doesn't finish.
What can be a reason ? What can I do to trace stage of convertion java string to varchar ?
Please help me...
Best regards
Marek

• Sxmb_moni shows the returning string as a big string of letter 'A'

Hello Friends
I am using the following scenario
An outside application sends a huge variable string of data via XI using SOAP adapter. XI inturn using RFC and a ZBAPI writes this into a table.
On the table side I am using the datatype 'VARILRAW' and it gets saved successfully without any error. However, because of the property, I can not go and see if the data in the table is correctly saved.
So I have written another ZBAPI to send the data back to the appliation, where I can check to see if the data string is the same that I sent.
However, instead of sending the same string back, it is sending a huge string of 'AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA...',
I went and checked the sxmb_moni and it shows the string that is coming in as correct string as expected. But the returning string is a huge string of letter As. (AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaa).
Can some one please show me where I am going wrong? I would really appreciate it.
Thanks
Ram

hi ram,
even we faced the same problem.
we used to get the data from .NET application and we found that ascill values are not the same.
for example if they are sending letter "X" it's being taken as some other letter which is not equivalent to letter "X".
in SXMB_MONI it shows the same letter "X" but while processing it takes something diff.
for us the solution worked when we changed the case of the letter as it was coming as small "x" we made it as CAPITAL "X".
then the processing was correct.
really speaking dont know how the character conversions takes place behind the screen.
Thanks & Regards,

• Report error: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small.

Full Details:
report error:
ORA-20001: Error fetching column value: ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small.
MS Access runs this query but when I try to call a 'List of Values' in APEX that is in excess of 800 the error above displays. If I use a 'Pop Up' it will work but splits the list at 500. This is annoying and slower as I would like to be able to display all 850+ items in a named list of values. How do I increase the buffer size?
Kind Regards,
Steve

Steve,
Could you please post the query you're using? You're most like hitting one of two possible varchar2 limitations. If you're calling the apex_item API in your SQL query to render the select list, then you're limited to 8000 characters, this your option values and HTML code used to render this. In this case using the "XL" versions of the APIs might help, e.g. select_list_from_query_xl, because those return CLOBs. If you're already using those or if you're using the built-in display type "select list", then you could potentially hit the 32k character limit of varchar2 values in PL/SQL. In that case the best alternative is using a popup LOV instead.
Regards,
Marc

• How to remove the "int len" of my return string on the DLLS header when building a DLL on LabVIEW 8.5

Hi all.
I'm building a DLL on LabVIEW and I choose a string as an output on the terminals connectors.
But LabVIEW creates another output, the lenght of the return string.
This is a problem because I have other DLLs and I need them to be compatible.
How do I remove this length from the header? What is the difference between Pascal String and C string and String Handle Pointer?
String Handle Pointer removes the length from the header but I don't know the difference between this data types.
Thanks in advance for the help.

C string pointer is a pointer to a memory location whose string information is terminated by a 0 byte. Pascal String Pointer is a pointer to a memory location where the first byte specifies the number of bytes to follow. This obviously allows only for strings up to 255 character length.
LabVIEW String Handle is a pointer to a pointer to a memory location where the first 4 bytes are an int32 value indicating the number of characters to follow. You can read such a String handle in a function without many problems, but you can only create, resize and delete such a handle by using LabVIEW memory manager functions. So this makes only sense if the caller of such a DLL is LabVIEW too as another caller would have to go through several hoops and tricks in order to gain access to the correct LabVIEW kernel that could provide the memory manager functions to deal with such handles.
Last but not least output strings whose allocated length is not passed to the funciton as additional parameter are a huge secerity risk (talk about buffer overrun errors). LabVIEW DLL Builder does not support the creation of DLLs with output string (or array parameters) without the explicit passing of an additional parameter telling the DLL function how large the allocated size is (so that the DLL function can make sure to never write over the end of the buffer).
The additional length parameter only disappears for String Handles because LabVIEW will simply resize them to whatever length is necessary and that is also the reason why those handles need to be allocated by the same memory manager instance that is also going to execute the DLL function.
Resizing of memory pointers is non-standardized and in normal circumstances not suited for passed function parameters at all.

• Error 500: String not terminated at end of line.

Hi,
I am trying to pass three parameters to a bean class. When I hardcode the values the method is executed correctly. However when I embed the parameters into the calling method I get the error:
Error 500: String not terminated at end of line.
The parameters are reqtrieved from the request object, and assigned to page variables. They are picked up and assigned to the variables without a problem.
Can someone let me know what the issue appears to be?

String var;
var=user.getUserId("<%=username%>", "<%=forename%>", "<%=surname%>");

Thanks for the reply. however this reutrns no values back to the browser. Again, hardcoding the values surrounded by quotes ( function expects String ) works fine returning a result.
Any ideas?

• LOV - PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small

I have a field set to 'text field with autocomplete' and now that the data that is used for the LOV has increased dramatically it returns the following error 'ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small'. Through trial and error I determined that if I restricted the number of rows returned using rownum < nnn then it would work. I then determined that I could use the trim and substring functions and remove the rownum restriction and it would work. Below is the LOV query. I have seen a couple of other posts similar to my problem and one of them asked if there was a way to increase the buffer size, but it was never answered. Is there a way, such as a parameter setting, that I could increase the buffer size for LOVs?

It was a manual operation but to tell you the truth the page has been changed so many times as I was working on different functionality and appearance that anything could have happened. I ended up having to manually create row processing processes and delete other processes, creating and hiding buttons, changing the way I'm passing item values, etc. I realize regardless of what I do as a developer the software should be able to handle all changes through it's interface but I've been in this business long enough to be realistic.
I also could have done something blatantly stupid as I continue to learn this product. For those of us not yet totally comfortable with all the web development technology, Javascript, AJAX, etc., but are asked to develop applications that work best using those technologies sometimes we make elementary blunders.
Thanks very much for your help. It is indeed appreciated.

• Returning strings from Java- C JNI calls

<newbie to JNI>
I have an application written in Java that accesses a .DLL written in C. The .DLL does low-level communication to a hardware device. I've got it all working except for one little problem:
For all of the functions I need to return an integer return code and for some of them I also need to return a string, such as a serial number, version string, or whatever.
Try as I might, I can't find any information on how to return two values from a function call (pretty sure I can't in Java).
SO, I tried to find out how to stuff the version string into a string object variable in the class object the DLL API is defined in. I can't figure out how to do that either...
e.g. the following Java code:
class LLDev {
/* --- Load the .DLL -------------------- */
static { System.loadLibrary("LLDev"); }
/* --- Error Codes ---------------------- */
public static final int LLDOk = 0;
public static final int LLDInitErr     = -1;
/* --- Public Variables ----------------- */
public static String DLLVersion;
/* --- Public Methods ------------------- */
public native int InitLLDev();
When I invoke LLDev.InitLLDev() from Java I want the C .DLL function Java_LLDev_InitLLDev to put the DLL Version string in the LLDev object's DLLVersion field and return an error code as the function result.
Is this possible???? Is this the right way to do this?? I tried to define the API with methods that return strings instead of integer return codes but the customer using the class wants all of the methods to return a return code in case of some error (e.g. reading the serial number from the device could fail...)

1. In general, the java way to deal with errors is by throwing exceptions, not using return codes. But OK, you are stuck with the user requirement.
2. I suggest you have the native method take as an argument a java object which will accept a string as input. In other words, it has a string "setter".
3. So in your native method, if the function succeeds, it writes your string result to that object, and you can futrther process it when the native method returns a "success" code.
4. There are JNI methods for
o looking up the class of a java object.
o looking up the method of a java class.
o invoking the method.

• Returning strings from OLE2 Word object (Forms 4.5)

Below is an example of how to return string and numeric values from OLE2 objects. In this example the OLE2 object is a MS Word document, and I want to fetch all the bookmarks in the Document into a Forms 4.5 Varchar2. To do this I first need to get the count of bookmarks.
Getting a string property from an OLE2 object is a common OLE2 requirement but is poorly documented. This is the ONLY way it can be done, as OLE2.INVOKE_CHAR returns a single character not a string. Use OLE2.INVOKE_OBJ, then OLE2.GET_CHAR_PROPERTY which does return a string, as shown below, to return a string from an OLE object (or OLE property).
Also note how you can only get the child object from its parent, not the grandchild (etc) object, so multiple (cascading) GET_OBJ_PROPERTY calls are required.

• Report error: ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string b

I have a form which uses a customer form/report, drop downs etc..
the debug shows it running this statement
...Execute Statement: begin begin SELECT distinct initcap(RTRIM (LTRIM (e.surname, ' *0123456789-/:.?,'), ' *0123456789-/:.?,') || ', ' || RTRIM (LTRIM (e.first_name, ' *0123456789-/:.?,'), ' *0123456789-/:.?,' )) empname, e.ID bulk collect into wwv_flow_utilities.g_display,wwv_flow_utilities.g_value FROM dms.dms_employees@dmsprd e, dms.dms_employee_contracts@dmsprd ec WHERE e.ID = ec.emp_id and e.surname like '%%' AND :p75_date BETWEEN ec.start_date AND NVL (ec.end_date, :p75_date) AND e.brh_id = 3654 ORDER BY 1; end; end;
Then says
"report error: ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small"
Any Ideas?

A select list is limited in size. I am not sure what the limit is but that is definitelly the case.The maximum size for the HTML generated for a select list is 32K.
86 options sounds on the low side to be hitting that limit, but there are other concerns to this as well. Scrolling through hundreds/thousands of options in a select list is a pain for users, and huge select lists produce bloated pages that impact load times and network bandwidth. That list of around 200 countries you find on many sites is about the sensible maximum length for a select list.
You should use popups.Indeed.

• Report error:ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string bu

We face the above error in HTMLDB (APEX) application Ver 3.1.0. This occurs when we try to display more number of rows/records in drop-down list (LOV in tabular forms). We are able to display 200 records in LOV. When the list of records exceeds 230, we face the below error
report error:ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small
the values listed in LOV are from tables (one of the columns in table)
Could anyone give us a solution?

Hi
As you are using a tabular form, you could actually do the following:
1 - In the tabular form column's attributes, set the following:
Display as: Select List (query based on LOV)
Display extra values: Yes
List of values definition: SELECT null d, null r FROM DUAL
2 - Add a new page item and set it to generate your select list
3 - Create an HTML region with no template and use the following for its source:
<script type="text/javascript">
function loadList(c, l)
var s = document.getElementsByName(c);
var lItem = document.getElementById(l);
var lLength = lItem.options.length;
var k;
var j;
var x = lItem.innerHTML;
var v;
var o;
var z;
for (k = 0; k < s.length; k++)
z = s[k];
v = z.value;
z.options.length = 0;
for (j = 0; j < lLength; j++)
o = new Option()
o.value = lItem[j].value;
o.text = lItem[j].text;
z.options[j] = o;
z.value = v;
if (z.selectedIndex == -1)
z.selectedIndex = 0;
loadList("f05", "P1_MGR");
</script>
(Change "f05" and "P1_MGR" as appropriate to your column and your new page item respectively)
Now, when you load the page, the select list contains a null entry plus the entry already on the database. The javascript kicks in automatically, loops through every entry in the "f05" column, copies the existing value, replaces the select list with the new page item version and sets its value to the copied value.
Your new page item could be in a DIV tag that has a style of "display:none" to hide it from view.
