I have this problem and in the jserv.log have:

I ve tried modify the init params in zone.properties
servlet.page.initArgs=requesttime=40
servlet.page.initArgs=stall=30

Have a look in your http.log file to check for any errors. A
customer of mine had set his max_clients to low and this resulted
in all of his portlets timing out.
