Error using Date.praseDate()

Question

Date s1 = new Date();
     s1 = Date.parseDate(request.getParameter("eDate1"));ERROR:

location: class java.util.Date
s1 = Date.parseDate(request.getParameter("eDate1"));
what is the error?

          } catch (Exception e) {
               throw new NumberFormatException(e.toString());
     }
