Error while connecting to Oracle 11gR2 database instance

Dear All,
I installed Oracle 11g R2 on my local machine (laptop) successfully. Using Sql Developer I tried to connect to the instance (ORCL) but not able to connect to the server. Please let me know hw to configure tnsnames.ora, listener.ora, and sqlnet.ora files. I tried to configure those three files using Net manager, but since I am novice, I could not do it..
Here are the details of my windows services related to oracle installation..

  • Cannot connect to Oracle 11gR2 database from SQL Server 2005

Both SQL Server (Windows) and Oracle (Linux) are in 64bit environments.
I have done the following on a Windows 2008 R2 with SQL Server 2005:
Install InstantClient from Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Client (11.2.0.1.0) for Microsoft Windows (x64) to C:\Oracle
Install oledb from 64-bit ODAC 11.2 Release 3 (11.2.0.2.1) for Windows x64 by executing install.bat oledb c:\oracle odac
Note: Not sure whether 11.2.0.2.1 version of ODAC will cause any problem since I cannot find 11.2.0.1.0 version.
I have checked the Allow inprocess of OraOLEDB.Oracle provider in SSMS.
    I have executed sp_addlinkedserver @server = 'ORACLE_TEST', @srvproduct = 'Oracle', @provider = 'OraOLEDB.Oracle', @datasrc = '##.##.##.##:1521/TEST'
The ##.##.##.## is the ip address of the Linux server which has the Oracle 11gR2 database TEST.
    I have executed sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname = 'ORACLE_TEST', @useself = 'FALSE', @rmtuser = 'xxxx', @rmtpassword = 'yyyy'
The xxxx is the oracle username and yyyy is the password for the oracle user xxxx.
I know the oracle database TEST is up since I have setup connection in Oracle SQL Developer having:
    ##.##.##.## as the hostname
    1521 as the Port
    xxxx as the username
    yyyy as the password
    TEST as the service name
When I click Test Connection for the linked server ORACLE_TEST in SSMS, it just hang.
When I issue a query like select count(*) from oracle_test..xxxx.table1, it just run forever. I'm not so sure how to query an oracle table. I have also tried select count(*) from oracle_test.xxxx.xxxx.table1.
When I retype the password in the Linked Server Properties, it just run forever.
Do I need to create a tnsnames.ora on the Windows machine?
Do I need to change the tnsnames.ora on Linux machine?
    I'm very new to Oracle.

This forum is dealing with connections from an Oracle database to SQL Server - so the Oracle database is the driving site and this is the way round from your linked server set up.
As you're suing the instant client you might post your issue in the instant client forum:

  • Failover not working while connecting to Oracle 11g database

    Hi,
We have a J2EE application that connects to Oracle 11g database.
The connection URL we are using is as below
    jdbc:oracle:thin:@(DESCRIPTION =(SDU=32768)(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=abc.hostname.com)(PORT=1525))(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST= xyz.hostname.com)(PORT=1525))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=PQR)))
The issue that we are facing is, the database failover is not working. The application only connects to the first host in the TNS entry.Evertime there is a failure in the connection to the first host, manual steps are required to swap the hosts.
This started happening after we upgraded Oracle DB from 9i to 11g.
We are using the client jar of 9i to connect to 11g. Could this be causing the problem?
    Thanks In Advance.

    889517 wrote:
Yes, you are right. Nothing else was updated.
The application still works as expected except the failover. If you are correct then I seriously doubt it has anything to do with java. It would be something to do with Oracle and/or network infrastructure.
If not then it is some small problem with the driver. You can try updating the driver but I wouldn't expect a fix.

  • Error while doing the Oracle 9i Database Installation

    PROBLEM ONE

    PROBLEM TWO
Then I deinstalled the Oracle 9i software and deleted the oracle folder from both the Windows Explorer as well as in the RegEdit.
Again I started doing the installation...
In Oracle Database Configuration Assistant, while it was installing "Adding Oracle JVM", I got the following error

When I clicked Ignore I got the following error

Please let me know why this problem occured and what is the solution for this......
If you need any information then please let me know
    With Regards

You have too few RAM on your machine, even you could successfully create an instance, it's going to slow as hell.
When you run DBCA to create database, instead of actually creating the database you could choose to dump the SQL scripts and files used for database creation to a directory. This way will give you a chance to modify pfile and reduce the SGA parameter. I believe the default SGA of instance created by DBCA is already beyond your RAM limit.

  • Import command error while importing in oracle 8i database.

    Hi,
Trying to import a schema using imp utility in oracle 8i using sucessfully exported dump file in oracle 11g. But getting below errors.
IMP-00010: not a valid export file, header failed verification
    IMP-00000: Import terminated unsuccessfully
Please provide any solution for this above error so that i can import a schema in Oracle 8i database.
    Thanks.

dump file created in 11g database can't be imported in lower 8i version.
Restrictions When Using Different Releases of Export and Import
The following restrictions apply when you are using different releases of Export and Import:
Export dump files can be read only by the Import utility because they are stored in a special binary format.
Any export dump file can be imported into a later release of the Oracle database.
The Import utility cannot read export dump files created by the Export utility of a later maintenance release. For example, a release 9.2 export dump file cannot be imported by a release 9.0.1 Import utility.
Whenever a lower version of the Export utility runs with a later release of the Oracle database, categories of database objects that did not exist in the earlier release are excluded from the export.
Export files generated by Oracle9i Export, either direct path or conventional path, are incompatible with earlier releases of Import and can be imported only with Oracle9i Import. When backward compatibility is an issue, use the earlier release or version of the Export utility against the Oracle9i database.

don't use ODBC for Oracle, use OCI

  • Error while connecting to Oracle on Unix

    Hi..
    I m new to JDBC.
I have written a small code which will connect to the Oracle and select some data to display report.
On execution its throwing NULL POINTER EXCEPTION on conn.
I guess the URL tht i hav used is a problem area. But i dont know what to use. I have used oracle_SID.
Can someone tell me if that is correct url or where should i find correct DSN namein UNIX dir?

    hey thanks....
actually i have done it using DSN on windows. but i
really dont know wher should i do it on UNIX. The
oracle 9i is already installed on this unix box. I
guess, the DSN name also has been created and exists
on the same. But i dont know where should i search in
unix dir to structure to find this DSN name.
Can someone help me to find existing DSN name on this
    box?
I believe it should be somewhere in ORACLE_HOME ...
???For Unix, if you have ODBC installed, there is an odbc.ini where you need to add the necessary configurations.
The best way you could do is make use of the Oracle thin driver (type 4).
